On the edge of the Dark Forest sits a small hut, home to many different residents over the years. The stone home’s current resident is Alistaire Firth, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts.
Anyone who draws near the hut is likely to first notice the smell of traditional Scottish fare: stovies, haggis, and hotch-potch are the Groundskeeper’s personal favorites. The lowing of Broc and Bonny can be heard from a distance. Medicinal plants, some natural and some recently planted, surround the base of the structure.
While the outside of the hut looks mostly the same as it has for decades, the inside shows Ali’s personal touches. The most prominent feature is a large field of blue with white diagonal lines crossing in an X—the Scottish national flag. Everything else is decorated with the same plaid tartan of the Douglas clan, a mix of blue and green. An old wooden table and sturdy bed frame comprise the only furniture of consequence in the one-room house. To the left of the entrance is a small kitchen set up, while a massive countertop dominates the right wall.
Few pictures or decorations adorn the walls, save one family photo in which one member’s face looks mysteriously burned or prodded. Books litter the floor space by the bed, including such titles as, “Scotland: A Complete History (Abridged Version),” “One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi,” “The Art of Bowtruckle Husbandry,” and “An Owner’s Guide to Proper Care of Highland Cattle.” A shabby set of bagpipes is hidden inside a small cabinet in a bedside table. The only other accoutrements are worn-looking tools lying helter-skelter in the corner.
Please knock on the door if you wish to speak with the Groundskeeper. If he does not answer immediately, he is probably either tending to Broc and Bonny or tromping through the Forbidden Forest. Though a busy man, Mr. Firth is kind, sympathetic, and never too busy to share his favorite drink, an Irn-Bru, with visiting students. But be warned: any trouble-making, especially involving his pets or the Forest, will be severely punished.

Before he came to Hogwarts for his sixth year, Daichi thought he had to pay the groundskeeper a visit to tell him that he wanted the duck pond back. He had wanted to whine at the previous keeper but a Gryffindor had scared him that the other man was scary so when he found out that there was a new keeper, Daichi made plans to flail, whine and nag until he got what he want.
But after a quick walk over the grounds the Slytherin found out that the new groundskeeper whom he had met at the hogsmeade platform , that the duck pond was back again. Some might find him strange now and the keeper was probably going to label him weird but... well technically Daichi IS weird. The Prefect wanted to thank the man for getting HIS heaven back! ...Oh and welcome him to Hogwarts but that wasn't important now!
With a stupid grin on his face, Daichi knocked rather loudly on the door of the hut and waited for it to open....
"Alrigh', I'm coming, I hear yeh!" he yelled, but not in an angry manner. More in a you-can-stop-knocking-now-before-you-break-your-knuckles kind of way. Setting down the rag he'd been using to swab out his tea kettle, he strode toward the door and opened it.
Before him stood... Ah, no... which one is this again? It was one of the Prefects he'd met at the station, but what was his name...? Oh! "I's Day-chee, righ'?" And if not, then what IS it? "Wha' can I do yeh for?"

As the door opened, Daichi's hand was still raised in the air and he quickly lowered it. He held his hands together and frowned slightly upon hearing his name...proncounced wrong again! "ehm, sorry, Sir but my name is Daichi" he said, not wanting to go through the year as Daychee. "the day is supposed to be Die"
What he could do for him? Eeeehhhhh.. Wait, why was he here again?! O__o the Slytherin thought for a few seconds when he remembered. His smile got back and his eyes seemed to twinkle. "Mr. Groundskeeper , Sir!" he shouted excitedly and flailed his arms a liiiiittle bit. "i wanted to say thank you for bringing the duck pond back! I actually wanted to give you a biiiiiig hug but that would be weird" nod nod nod

His cheeks reddened slightly. "Ah, o' course i' is, Daichi. Sorry 'bout tha'," he said, smiling warmly. "I's hard to remember all these new names, yeh know. I'll try ter remember from now on!" Because no one liked to be called the wrong thing, after all.
And then Ali waited. Apparently the boy couldn't remember why he was here? Or maybe he was mad that his name was said incorrectly? I hope it's not that! But then he was shouting. "Woah, laddie! Yeh can call me Mr. Firth, I won't be going for this 'sir' business." That was for professors, but Ali was too laid back for that.
The man chuckled. "Eh, yeh're welcome! I have a bit o' a soft spot for the little creatures meself." He was happy to hear that someone else would likely be checking up on them every once in a while. "An' yeh're righ', the hug would be a little weird."

"eh, It's okay..." Daichi said as the groundskeeper began to apologize. He always felt weird when people apologized to him. Usually HE was the one who had to do it. "It took me more than a year to get to know some peoples names...and i still forget them sometimes so It's totally cool!" did he just say cool to an adult?!
And now was the perfect timing to drop his mouth in awe and that he did. Daichi just stared at Mr.Firth as he wanted to be called and blinked his eyes. "You...you like ducks too, Sir?" ....he wasn't his soulmate right?! O_____o cause Indy already was his soulmate! "You are the first after Mr.Murdoch to like them! You are officially in my cool list, not that i have one but whatever.."
Realising he was busy rambling stupid words, Daichi cleared his throat. He should act like a good Prefect now and stop acting so..childlike.. "Why did you wear a skirt at the Platform, Mr.Firth?" perfectly normal question right?~

A hearty chuckle escaped Alistaire Firth. "Why o' course I do, Daichi! How can yeh not love th' little guys?" After all, that quacking noise was superb. "When I heard there used ter be a duck pond, I wanted i' back righ' away." And... His Cool List, eh? That was a good thing in this case, most likely. "Well I dunno who Mr. Murdoch is, bu' I thank yeh kindly, Daichi. Tha's righ' nice of yeh ter say."
Oh yes. Another person who didn't know what a kilt was. "I's not a skirt, lad. I's traditional Scottish dress. The men used ter wear 'em in battle, yeh know." So yes, it WAS male clothing. "Nowadays i's more worn jus' fer formal occasions. Weddings, funerals, balls, feasts, that sort o' thing." Anything Muggles would wear a suit to, basically. "My family can trace our Scottish heritage back fer generations. I'm quite proud o' it, if yeh can' tell." Ali gestured behind him to the giant Scottish flag displayed on the wall and numerous Douglas clan tartan decorations.
Amelia ran to the doorway of Alistaire Firth's cottage. Her little hands were shaking so much that she was just nervous. Amelia was scared. First years and forests.
Yes she wanted to go in herself, but first years were too young.

And she wanted to pet his cows...and not have students get eaten by spiders.
"Hello...err..." she paused a moment because half of her was screaming be a goooood ravenclaw and let him know about the forest issue and another was going he's so pretty and yet another part of her wanted to just runaway scared.
What was she doing?
Gulp.

She didn't meant to hint. She was just trying to get over her fear of forests. Her sister had gotten her lost in one when she was a kid...so she still didn't like them. "andyouhavestalkers" yeah that was about it.

He attempted to smile down at her, but that was a hard task to accomplish when he was on alert for trouble due to her cry for help. This is why he was thrown off base by her next question. "Er, wha'? Well sure, lass, Broc 'n Bonny are always up fer a good pat." And.. what did that have to do with a desperate plea of assistance? Also, what did this NEXT question have to do with needing help? Alistaire was starting to get annoyed, and it showed on his face. "I's called the Forbidden Forest, lass. Figure it out fer yerself." Perhaps there should also be a sign saying frantic cries for help were forbidden if there was no urgent need of help.
This time a frown visibly crossed Mr. Firth's face. "I have stalkers." It wasn't a question. It was a statement laced with disbelief, disapproval, and a lot of other 'dis' words, most likely. Let's get right to the point. "Well lass, yeh were callin' fer help. 'S there a problem or not?" And for her sake, he hoped there WAS.

It was time, she had to run run run like the wind...but she stayed rooted to the spot because she really was kinda scared of the pretty groundskeeper-man and she did want to be on the goodside of his cows. No need to get headbutted for no reason...right?.

Ali was glad students were taking an interest in Broc and Bonny. He'd been a bit worried about bringing them here before term had started. Cattle weren't exactly what most teens would call 'cool' pets. But this was a good sign. "Great! Yeh can always bring a frien' or two as well, if yeh'd like." You know, in case they suddenly felt the desire to be helpful and muck out the enclosure.
He ignored the comments she made about the so-called stalkers. Children were bound to be curious about new staff members. This wasn't what interested him. The FOREST wanted to know.. It may be mysterious, but it sure can't communicate with people. Overactive imagination, this one. The NEXT phrase was what interested him. This girl was clearly nervous, if her rapid rate of speech meant anything. Probably doesn't want to get in trouble herself. Or she doesn't want anyone to know she told on them. Either way, he needed to go check things out.
"Righ', well I have some work t' be doin', lass. So unless there's anythin' else, I suggest yeh run along back up ter th' castle." Or to pet Broc and Bonny. Whatever she wanted, he just didn't want to be followed. "Bu' thank yeh fer stoppin' by, i's been..." What HAD it been, exactly? "...a lovely chat." Without further ado, he closed the door on the girl without ever even getting her name.
Inside, Alistaire put on his Forest Boots, the black, mud-caked, sturdy, steel-toed footwear he always used whenever he needed to make an excursion into the Dark Forest. He grabbed his slingshot and wand, checked to make sure the girl had really gone, and then slipped out the back door nearer to the trees. From the supply shed, the Groundskeeper grabbed and lit the old fashioned lantern that was perfect for such occasions. Composing himself, he trod off and disappeared among the trees.

Minutes later, the trees began to thin and more light made its way to the forest floor. But Ali did not relax until his hut came into view. Glancing behind him, he saw all three students. Good, none had been eaten. When they reached the hut, he said, "Stay here," to the three girls.
He left them outside momentarily and went into his hut. First he sent another Patronus off to Truebridge, alerting her to the students' safety. Next, he grabbed his pocket Sneakoscope and stuffed it into his jacket where the pygmy puff had been residing recently. If any of them lied when he questioned them, he would know right away.
Returning outside, he stood in front of the trio and got right to the point. "Righ', out with it. Wha' in the name o' Merlin were yeh doin' in there?"
That was her reaction when the Groundskeeper - the pygmy puff thief - gave her own pygmy puff back. Mags was equally happy to be back to her owner no doubt. And how do we know this? Because she immediately went into the bag. No one was going to take her from there, right? But Lottie had other plans and simply held her in her hands.
A beaming Lottie was walking up to the Groundskeeper hut.
First things first. "My name is...," could she say Aidan Stone? "...Lotus, Sir," she nodded, and she'd represent both the Gryffindor and herself, no idea who the Ravenclaw was with, but it wasn't with them.
"Actually, we weren't in the forest at first...," clearly, because they were in the Castle...explanation time, woohoo! "...see, Lex and I were looking for a gift for Milton, the Ravenclaw Captain," that was actually completely true, "You know, he likes outdoorsy things...," or so she thought, "...and we were planning on getting him a plant or an arrangement of the sorts," and she had a book, a Herbology book, made by her from everything Spike told her when they were looking for trees last term.... - anyway, she had a book to prove they were looking for Herbology stuff.
She sounded business-like, but also sweet, and that was the truth, trust me.
"But then....," she narrowed her eyes a little at Felix, "...Felix...went after my pygmy puff," her heart was racing, for this actually happened, in the forest, infront of the Groundskeeper, "I ran after her, I couldn't...wouldn't...let her get lost," her own worried state was obvious, and it also related to the pygmy puff for HE took her away, her head shook from side to side as she explained that bit, "The rest you know, because you got her," and didn't give her away as soon as he caught the bright pink pygmy puff, "Thanks for that, Sir," cue sweet (real) smile.
Oh, but, of course, "Lex is Felix's owner, so she also came," she added, hurriedly.
Surprisingly, this was all true. For it all happened.

Lookit, Lottie had her pygmy puff back! That was one less thing to worry about. Now all they had to be concerned with was getting back, making the meeting quick then grabbing some hot chocolate and tea and chocolate from the kitchen. Yup. That would make her feel much better after all that just happened.
At least the walk by to the hut wasn't all that long and drawn out. By herself, she might have been dreading this but she had Lottie so she knew everything would turn out just fine...for them anyway. Smirk.
They were offering names now?
"And I'm Alexa." No need to question it. There had to be REASONS. That being the case she was going to remain quiet. The Hufflepuff had things under control. See, if she started talking then things probably wouldn't go all that well...Right. She'd be keeping quiet. This wasn't very hard to do because Lottie was being so clever about the whole thing. As far as Lex could tell there wasn't a single lie in that. They were going to look for a man-eating present for Milton.
Lex kept herself rather composed, if she were looking at herself in a mirror she'd probably giggle because of how serious she looked at the moment. Oh and there Lottie went again with more facts. Not even the Ground's Keeper could argue that last point because he was the one who saved Mags from becoming Felix's next meal!
And now it was time for her to chime in. "Yes sir, thank you. Felix would've eaten Mags if you hadn't come when you did." Also the truth. The kneazle liked hunting, especially for creatures that happened to already had owners.

Lotus? Man, parents these days sure were coming up with strange names... even for Wizarding names, which were by default always stranger than Muggle names. But Alexa and Audrey were far more normal, at least.
A frown passed over his face as Lotus began explaining what had happened. It didn't take long before a shrill whistle could be heard emanating from the chest region of Firth's jacket. The look of displeasure only deepened at this. "Yeh know wha' tha' sound is, girls?" Yes, GIRLS, not ladies. Because they had been and still were acting like the former. "I's my Sneakoscope goin' off. Detects concealment an' dishonesty," he said by way of explanation, just in case they hadn't heard of them before. "Which means yeh're now in trouble fer bein' in the forest, runnin' away," he said, looking directly at Audrey, "an' lyin' to me about i' on top o' that." He shook his head, anger showing in his voice for the first time. "So I suggest SOMEONE tells me the truth real fast before I chuck yeh in detention fer a month and take 100 house points each!" Which he wouldn't do, of course, but sometimes it didn't hurt to exaggerate a tiny bit in such cases.
Lottie had excellent hearing, if you didn't know so already. Though, Lex could probably hear that too. Everyone could hear a sneakoscope go off! Which bring us to our ultimate point! IT WASN'T FAIR. Him, using magic like that, it wasn't fair.
But they've told him the truth. Half of it, anyway, the rest was probably best kept hidden.
"I understand the part with the forest," she started to say, nodding and holding Mags a bit tightly, "But...my pygmy puff...," she almost pouted, but her face suggested she was about to do so until he mentioned the truth.
DETENTION FOR A MONTH?! Spike would definitely find out about this!
Also, 100 points say what?! "The truth...," she breathed in and out, "...the truth is we don't really like Milton." TRUE.

Just as she finished speaking she heard a NOISE. Her eyes shot to the man's pocket immediately. That's where it was coming from, wasn't it? If it weren't for the fact that they were already in trouble she would have eyed him for pulling such a cheap shot.
This was all almost enough to have her making a face at the Ground's Keeper but of course, she was going to remain composed and continue to follow Lottie's lead--

Detention for a month??? 100 POINTS??? WHAAAAAAT? But that wasn't FAIR! They didn't do anything that wrong and there was NO WAY he'd be able to lock them in there that long. For the first time since they got caught in the forest, her facial expression gave away how she was feeling as the wind was knocked out of her. This man was ridiculous! Lex quickly shut her mouth that had flown open and once again regained her composure but on the inside she was dying!! For the first time since they got caught in the forest, her facial expression gave away how she was feeling as the wind was knocked out of her. This man was ridiculous! Lex quickly shut her mouth that had flown open and once again regained her composure but on the inside she was dying!! Yes, that had definitely worked. The girls appeared terrified now and words began spilling from their mouths. And hopefully this time he would be getting truth, FULL truth. "Yeh don' like Milton." Because that was surely the only thing that hadn't been entirely accurate... "So yeh weren' really getting him a present, I take it." More like getting him a vicious creature to hurt him. "An' yeh didn' plan on runnin' away." Which implied they DID plan on getting caught, but he thought that's probably not what she had meant.
"An' yeh're sure there's nothin' else yeh're hidin', now? Perhaps that yeh were planning on goin' in th' forest all along." Because if they were willing to admit it, things would go much better for them.
As it stood right now, the amount of new information he'd just received was definitely not enough to lessen their punishment. As far as he could tell, they were still holding out on him. Ali may have been a Gryffindor and enjoyed his own sense of adventure, but there was nothing noble or chivalrous about racing off into the forest and then lying about it. More like something DUMB about it, really.
Lottie sort of smiled. "No, we don't like him," she said, entirely positive and certain of her feelings towards the obnoxious Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain. She almost said 'We hate him', but...was he THAT important a person to hate? Nah. Wait, what? "Oh, no, we were definitely going to search for a present for him," she nodded, this was the ABSOLUTE truth, in regards to the Milton situation.
Now that she knew there was a sneakoscope around, she needed to watch her words.
"Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean you can't get them a present," nod, nod. Of course, it would've been something that could harm him, but that wasn't said.
Well, yeah? That was the whole idea, but they weren't gonna say, right? Right. She was going to stick to her story, which was completely true, only the timelines were switched. "We were planning on getting Milton a present, Sir." THAT was the story. She hugged her pygmy puff for dramatic purposes. The Groundskeeper knew what she meant, she'd mentioned Mags before.

Lex was still planning to follow Lottie's lead. That was what they had agreed to if they were to get caught and unlike Audrey she didn't plan to go back on the plan and ruin things. This meant that if Lottie was still keeping up with the story then so was she. The Puffer was a smart one. Everything would be just fine and if not...it was simply because the Ground's Keeper was defective.
"Nah, we don't like him at all but it's like Lottie said. Just because you didn't like someone doesn't mean you can't take some time out of your day to get them something." Especially if that something scarred him for life and left him looking behind him with every two steps he took. Heh.
It was obvious they'd have to watch their words so she was being extra careful now. That last sentence held her exact feelings and she even added a sweet little smile to it.
"Planning to go into the forest sir?" Lex asked, feigning confusion. "I believe we simply wanted to enjoy the grounds, find a present for the Captain and maybe catch the sunset...none of that sounds very bad to me and the forest isn't the only place to accomplish all that. Felix is the one who decided Mags might make a good snack." She was 100% sure that was how the kneazle was seeing things so there you go, another truth.
Her eyes fell to the kneazle that was swinging his tail testily. She could tell he was getting impatient with the whole thing.

The only thing that was clear from this 'story' was their mutual dislike for this Milton character. And despite what they say, you don't just go get a present for someone you don't like. Not the good kind, anyways. Which meant they were at the least trying to trick him, and perhaps even hoping to hurt him. Strike one.
Clearly this conversation was getting them nowhere. The girls weren't going to tell him the truth, at least not the whole thing. And unfortunately for them, that meant the punishment would be harder than if they had fessed up. Strike two. "So yeh're sayin' yer problem is tha' yeh simply can' READ." He pointed over at the large KEEP OUT signs posted around the rim of the forest. "Since I know yeh both can or yeh wouldn' even BE here, then yeh simply jus' can' obey directions."Strike three and they're OUT.
"Nothin' gives yeh permission ter go in th' Forest, girls. NOTHING, exceptin' a staff member, o' course." Which should be obvious, but it was still worth saying. "Yeh should have come found me ter go in there if yer cat was really lost." Which was silly, because cats were smart enough to find their own ways. "Plus yeh haven' been entirely truthful with me. PLUS yeh were aimin' ter trick or harm Milton, which also isn't good." Not that he could prove that, but that wasn't why they were getting in trouble, so it didn't matter.
"I'm takin' 50 points each from the two of yeh," he said, looking at Alexa and Lotus. "An' I'll have 60 from you, Audrey-- more because yeh ran away." That action had put her in more danger than Ali cared to contemplate. She had been very lucky. "On top o' that yeh'll be gettin' detention time with me. Once I work out what yeh'll be doin', I'll let yeh know." It wouldn't be pretty, that much was certain in the Scot's mind. "Now get righ' back to yer common rooms, all three of yeh. I'll know if yeh take any stops along the way."
Hmmmm? Excuse me? She can very much READ, Mr. Groundskeeper. Also, she follows directions very well. Or...Lex did, because she followed Lottie's perfectly well. Not the same can be said about Audrey, though, she barely even listened.
Lottie wanted to sort of contradict him for a moment, like, there ARE exceptions, you know? If Mags had actually gone inside on her own, then she would've followed, or accio'd her. But she decided not to say anything, it wasn't wise to interrupt him, anyway.
Well, YEAH. Did she really want to tell him that they wanted to get rid of Milton? No. A tiiiiiiny smirk was revealed on her face, but she quickly torn her eyes away form the Groundskeeper to Mags. He couldn't have seen that, she was quick.
Now they knew what could happen if they went inside the forest, BUT...they saw a unicorn! For afar. And Lex saw a thestral! And Audrey lost more points than they did. It was so totally worth it. As far as detention goes...hmmm...let's wait for it to happen and see how we feel about it.
SIGH.
She nodded. "Alright, Sir," she said, nicely, "Have a good evening," no apologies? Seriously? No. They could go back to the Castle, right? Right. Come on, Lex, let's go.

With Medea following closely behind, he tromped towards his humble abode. When they reached the door, he opened it, held it, and stepped aside to allow her to enter first. "After yeh, Medea."
Once inside, he hurried to the small table and pulled out a chair for her. "Please, have a seat! Make yerself comfortable." From the cupboard he grabbed two large mugs. Then, hurrying over to the fire, he took the tea kettle out of the flames. "I make m'own tea from native Scottish herbs. Bu' if yeh don' like it, I have more traditional teas as well." He poured two steaming mugs full of water, then plopped a homemade tea bag in each. "I' doesn' take long ter steep. I's quite strong."
After replacing the kettle over the flames, he pulled out a chair for himself and took a seat across the table from Medea. "So, Medea. We haven' really had too much of a chance ter talk. Tell me abou' yerself!"
