Professor Bentley is a very busy woman, but if you're lucky enough to secure an appointment with her one of the first things you will notice when you enter her office is the aroma. The air is filled with the sweet scent of peppermint tea and flowers. Oh no, you won’t find trowels, dragon dung or dirt in this room, everything is presented in a neat and orderly fashion. The office is decorated in earthy brown tones with hints of pink, green and yellow making the room feel very homey. In summer a light breeze will be drifting through an open window, whereas in the cooler months a fire will be roaring in the open grate fireplace. Behind Professor Bentley’s desk on wall by the window is a large cork board. On this board you will see a collection of photographs of family and friends as well as the occasional note about classes or homework. This includes her very dashing fiance Aron Ashburry-Hawthorne and another of her good friend and colleague Professor Hadley. Along this photograph is one of her handsome, on-again, off-again boyfriend -- currently on again. So feel free to come in and take a seat on one of the plush and comfy stools- mind of course you have permission to enter. Don't worry too much about the small bundle of fluff that flits in and out of the room, or lounges at your feet, Caltex doesn't bite. Just be sure your laces are tied, otherwise you might find you wont have any left by the time you leave.
And be careful as you enter... the potted Fanged Geraniums by the door like to play occasionally.

Seren had checked her watch countless times throughout the morning, purely because she didn't want to miss her first appointment of the term. After scrubbing the dirt from under her nails and changing out of her work robes, Seren sat herself down behind her desk, shuffling papers and waiting for her guest to arrive.
Presley had been shocked in the changes that had happened in Hogwarts during her years away. Namely the one where she had to request an appointment by owl to talk to Professor Bentley. Directly after astronomy Presley went to the Herbology professors office and knocked smartly.

Deciding put her 'office' time to good use, Seren penned away at a lesson plan whilst waiting for her next appointments. Pursing her lips, she turned a leaf in her planner... hhmm...

Trivial though they may seem, they were important questions, because she couldn't tell Bentley how much she hated Burbage if they were good friends. It just wasn't right!
"And what happened last term? Obviously something. No year is ever boring at Hogwarts, but you know I was at Beauxbatons for most of last year, and I just can't seem to ask what went on because I can't find conversation to bring it up in." Presley paused and took a deep breath, refilling her lungs. She had a bazillion more things to say, but it was better to let Bentley answer them a few at a time, otherwise they both might forget which ones Presley had asked, and Pres wouldn't get her answers.

Kurumi had allowed herself a week to sort out her thoughts and get herself back into some sort of routine, which she had thankfully found thanks to her housemates - although none of them were aware of this. The hardest part had actually been talking to Selina...especially after the shocked expression and words she had received during and after the opening feast. Selina was, and always would be, Kurumi's best friend...so what she had to say matter a lot to her and while she knew the red head really was just trying to cheer her up...the feelings were still lingering.
So...here Kurumi was. Still in some sort of metaphorical limbo about herself. Her self identity wasn't crushed, exactly, but confused and lost were probably the right words. She wasn't seeking sympathy from Professor Bentley. Failures and those who did not meet expectations didn't deserve it. No, all Kurumi wanted to do was come, apologize, and leave.
When it was her turn to enter, she dragged her feet into the office and didn't entirely close the door nor sit down. Not that she usually went right for the seats anyway. She always waited to be told to take a seat because it was polite. "Hello...professor," Kurumi said somewhat half heartedly.

On her way to Professor Bentley's office, Ariadne had already put her name on the Herbology Task Force sign-up sheet. She had never been a genius when it came to plants, but her Head of House had encouraged her (in the girl's third year, was it?) to go out in the nature and look at plants more if she wanted to become a successful wandmaker. Which she had done and wanted to continue doing.
After checking her watch to make sure she was not early to the appointment, the Gryffindor knocked on the door and waited for admittance, all the while holding a plant pot, with buds of pineapple sage, from her stepfather's gardens in southern France. Salvia elegans, as it's officially called, had reminded her of her Head of House, so she had gotten some cuttings to bring back to Hogwarts.
Ariadne's year at Beauxbatons had been a huge change in her life, so huge that she simply couldn't adapt, and it had been really hard for her to seek advice from anyone at that school. But now she was back at Hogwarts, where Bentley was still Gryffindor Head of House. Ari was grateful that hadn't changed.
After being admitted in, the girl smiled brightly and greeted her Head of House. 'Hello, Professor. How are you?' She lifted the pot a bit awkwardly and added: 'This is for you. Pineapple Sage.' Ariadne was unsure if the plant had magical properties, but it sure smelled nicely when in bloom.

Seren sat, eyes wide open in surprise as she listened to Presley empty her lungs... and brain (as it seemed)... of all words and thoughts. In her attempt to process what the girl had said, her shoulders twitched into a shrug. Marion Burbage. "No... she's new, I've barely met her myself." Though if they were friends, why would that be of any importance to Presley?
As if that hadn't been confusing enough, when Presley brought up the topic of the previous school year Seren found herself shaking her head, lips pursed. "Well I'm sure you read in the Prophet that there were... issues... with some time thief woman from Hogsmeade. I don't really know a great deal myself, I've been ... preoccupied with other things." Mm. Yes, preoccupied.

"Please take a seat, how've you been?" she asked, setting the plant down in a safe spot by the window. "How was your time abroad?"

Kurumi swallowed as she made her way towards one of the seats, taken a back just a bit by her Head of House not sitting down behind her desk as usual but in a stool...right beside her. Lewis had even once said it was one of the things he loved most about her - how open she was with her feelings. How easy he could read her. She had always atoned this to him being, well, very VERY special to her. Same with Selina. Then again, Professor Bentley had become a sort of mother figure to Kurumi, especially after last term.
"I've been...alright, professor," she said with a firm nod. A little TOO firm really. "Recovering from the first day of the term mostly." Which wasn't a lie. A LOT had gone one, including what she wanted to come and apologize for. "Actually, I wanted to bring to newly sorted Gryffindors to your attention, although you are probably already aware of one of them. They both were involved in a, um, situation involving climbing the Hogwarts Express while we were still on the platform." Kurum i pulled out a small piece of parchment where she had written the names of Gryffindor first years Dylan Jacobs and Alexa Cambridge on and handed it to Professor Bentley. "Dylan seems to have mostly settled in, front what I have seen. As for Alexa..."
And she trailed off. Nothing more needed to be said really. Kurumi was pretty sure that the girl was beyond wanting to listen to anything Kurumi said and the seventh year knew you had to pick and choose your battles. Best to just hand that over to Professor Bentley.
And was she avoiding the real topic on her mind? Yeah, just a little. Kurumi felt awkward talking about it...because she knew it wasn't something that dictated who she was or where she was going...not entirely at least. At least that was what she kept telling herself, but obviously had not yet convinced herself.

The atmosphere in the office felt very friendly, as it did the few other times she'd been here. 'Thank you, Professor. It's wonderful to be back.' Ariadne smiled, watching Bentley find a place for the plant.
'Thank you.' she said, again, when offered a seat. After sitting on a chair and placing her bag at her feet, the girl proceeded to answer the questions. 'I would be lying if I'd say it had been all right. It was so difficult for me to feel like anything other than an outsider there, and it sure didn't help that my knowledge of French is rather limited. Though I really like my mum and stepfather's new place near Toulouse, and I enjoyed visiting France, I have spent most of my time at Beauxbatons, being 'the foreign girl'. Luckily, I managed to convince my mum to let me return to Hogwarts, and I'm living with my grandparents now.' Ooops. Too much information.
'Sorry, Professor. I suppose you weren't expecting that much detail when you asked.' Ari excused herself, blushing. Nice going. Her Head of House had been polite to her, and her response was blabber. But there was more to come, because the reason for her visit was quite an unusual one.
Trying to form coherent sentences in her head, and coming up with nothing of use on how to bring up the topic, Ariadne decided it was better to get straight to the point. Bentley was a busy woman.
'Professor, is there any way I can find out the identity of someone in a photograph, if I don't know anything else about them except that they're Muggle?' Now THAT sounded odd. A bit too straight to the point, perhaps.

She sings everything she says, and calls Isaac Newton a studmuffin, and I forgot about uniforms, because I was at Beauxbatons last year, and I was even early, but she didn't give me a warning, or ask me to go change or anything. She just took ten points away right there! So I went to change, and was still on time to her class. I don't have to be in uniform when I'm not in class, right professor?" It was certainly wrong of the new astronomy professor to take points away from Presley. "Besoides, she made us make bottle rockets! As if that has anything to do with studying the sky! Bottle Rockets!" Presley really hoped at this point that Bentley didn't like her first impression of the new teacher, because Presley could be in serious trouble if they had hit it right off.
Time theif woman? "The Prophet wasn't very specific," Presley hedged, not willing to let on that she hadn't received the Prophet all summer on account of her living with her muggle aunt. That was a huge and complicated issue that Presley would get to later. After all of the minor things were solved. Only after finishing her entire rant and wanting to go on about everything that had happened in the past year did Presley realize that her favorite professor didn't look like she'd had an easy time lately. "Preoccupied, professor?" She asked, taking a deep breath. Conversation was about taking turns. If her tutor could see her now, he would be so disappointed.

Uh huh... Seren didn't believe the Prefect for a second, but she could understand where the girl was coming from. Taking the parchment, she nodded. Yes, those names were already very familiar with her. Being Head of House, not much got passed her. Yet, anyway. "Thank you for telling me."
"I'm sure this wasn't the only reason why you stopped by, was something else on your mind?" a herbology project perhaps? or a Gryffindor event? ... or... a bake sale for... house elf rights?

Seren smiled and nodded at all the appropriate times. It was sad that Ariadne didn't feel at home in France, but it was so good to see her back that it was sort of a blessing in disguise. Not that she wanted former students to dislike being elsewhere... but it was always nice to see them return. "I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out... but I am glad you're back," she said with a wink. "Gryffindor needs a role model like yourself."
On the other hand... while she was generally good at helping students out or pointing them in the right direction... Seren was lost, on this request. "I... uhh.... I'm not sure. Perhaps Professor Cerulean could shed some light on the matter? Or even Mister Kitridge might have an idea." At any rate, unless it was a muggle plant, she didn't have a clue.

Seren raised an eyebrow, urging caution to the young Eagle. "... Students and staff don't always see eye to eye Presley... but it's important to treat them with respect, even if you feel hard done by." The woman must have had her reasons for docking points... she must have. "Remember that each teacher is different. We all have our own rules and our own methods of teaching as well as developing consequences." And mouthing off to other people wasn't the way to go about handling the issue. "Perhaps if you write her a formal apology she may reconsider, or at least understand your point of view." Not to mention getting back on the woman's good side.
As for the Prophet and the time theif debacle... "I'm sure it didn't, but unfortunately I don't know all that much either." Though she perhaps should do... considering it claimed her Prefect last term. "All I know is a number of staff and students were... frozen for a period of time. But they seem fine now."
As for her preoccupations. "Oh you know... always busy... new plants, lesson planning, marking, maintenance... not to mention I set up the Herbology Task Force just last year." And a fair bit of work went into that.

Which is why the seventh year took a deep breath, held it in for a moment, and then bowed her head before whispering the real reason why she had come. "I'msorry." There, she had said it. Only she didn't stop like her brain was telling her she should. "I'm sorry for letting down Gryffindor...and you."

Role model? She wasn't the smartest, nor the friendliest, not even the most courageous...She was just a normal girl. One who blushed slightly at the comment and let it pass without comment.
Ari didn't feel like discussing personal things with Professor Cerulean. She was nice enough, but they hadn't really talked outside class. Ever. 'I think he might be my biological father.' she spoke, referring to the man in the picture next to her mum. 'I've never met him. Apparently, he couldn't cope with the fact that my mum was a witch and he left us before I was even born. That's all the information I could get from my family.' Which didn't help much, obviously.
Despite her good relationship with both her mum and stepdad, a part of her had always wondered what her father was like and what it would be like to spend a day with him. Then, in one of the vacations when she visited her best friend, Gwen, the Ravenclaw had found this picture among her parents' stuff. Ari's mum and Gwen's parents had been close friends since they were 11, so this was a good place to start.
Unbeknownst to her, the man in the picture was Lloyd Gallagher, quite a prominent politician in Muggle Britain. If only she'd read Muggle newspapers...Alas, the girl was completely unaware that her dad was a public person, and continued to look for answers in the dark.
'I'm sorry if I've taken up too much of your time. I think I just wanted to talk, really. Thank you for listening, I appreciate it.' the fifteen-year old smiled softly, wondering if she should go and talk to the Muggle Studies Professor after all.

Seren raised an eyebrow, urging caution to the young Eagle. "... Students and staff don't always see eye to eye Presley... but it's important to treat them with respect, even if you feel hard done by." The woman must have had her reasons for docking points... she must have. "Remember that each teacher is different. We all have our own rules and our own methods of teaching as well as developing consequences." And mouthing off to other people wasn't the way to go about handling the issue. "Perhaps if you write her a formal apology she may reconsider, or at least understand your point of view." Not to mention getting back on the woman's good side.
As for the Prophet and the time theif debacle... "I'm sure it didn't, but unfortunately I don't know all that much either." Though she perhaps should do... considering it claimed her Prefect last term. "All I know is a number of staff and students were... frozen for a period of time. But they seem fine now."
As for her preoccupations. "Oh you know... always busy... new plants, lesson planning, marking, maintenance... not to mention I set up the Herbology Task Force just last year." And a fair bit of work went into that.
Presley had treated her with respect, even though the woman didn't earn even a speck of it. A formal apology? Presley blinked. She took a slow deep breath and in a really quiet voice admitted "I don't know how to do that. I've never written an apology before." An invitaion, she was old hand at. Thank you notes, easy. Political manuevers, she'd seen done countless times, but apologies? Unless it was sarcastic, Presley wasn't much of an apologizer. But if Professor Bentley thought she ought to do it, then she would try her hardest.
Frozen people?? Why of all years did that have to be the one Presley missed? It sounded terrifyingly thrilling and wonderful! Presley just couldn't resist asking "Which students, professor?" Because if she knew, then she could ask them alllllll about it, and it would be almost as good as really being there. Not quite, but almost.
"Herbology Task Force?" She asked with interest, never having heard about it before. This was good. Presley was doing much better at taking turns now, even if her mind was still bursting with unsaid things.
It was almost 4pm as Orr came rushing up to knock at Professor Bentley's office door. She had no idea how she had gotten so caught up doing her Transfiguration HW--designing new clothes was so much fun and took up a lot of time.
She glanced in her little mirror to make sure that she wasn't too red in the face before her meeting. She looked fine as she could possibly be at this time.
At least she wasn't late Orr thought to herself as she promptly knocked on the door and waited for Professor Bentley to let her in.

"Ahh, I see... well muggle-magical relations can be extremely difficult, for obvious reasons..." which were still ridiculous. "Perhaps, if you want to find more answers, approach this from a detectives point of view. Look into your mums known associates, places she visited, activities she did.." and who didn't want to be a detective?! If only she'd been more successful in her search for her father.

After adding some details and appointments to her monthly planner, Seren cleared her desk and leant back to relax a bit. Teaching was a tough gig. Never ending.
And alas... Aurora must be here.
Opening the door, Seren greeted the young Ravenclaw with a smile. "Aurora, come on in, please take a seat."

Presley said, as if she was concerned instead of intruiged. "Well, thank goodness they're all okay now."

She took a seat on a particular comfy stool. "I wanted to talk to you about the second mission of the task force. I'm really enjoying being on the task force and I was just wondering if there is any plant in particular in the greenhouses that need more attention with the Minsecticide? I'm sure that they all need attention of course. I was just wondering which were the most needy."

Sh took her own seat and placing her palms on her desk, not quite sure how to keep herself busy. "Ahh..." Now that was a typical Ravenclaw question. "There are none in particular, but I suppose the most susceptible are those closest to the entrances and around the perimeter."

This was absolutely absurd. Seren could feel her blood pressure beginning to rise as Kurumi spoke. There was absolutely no way that she did not deserve it, that she was not worthy of the title... there had just been a mistake, an error... "Kurumi, look at me," she said in a low, smooth tone. "You are an exceptionally bright young witch, talented, organised, repsonsible... you've fulfilled your prefects duties beyond what is required of you...." And this is where it got hard. How do you tell someone that they were just unlucky? Or... even worse, how do you tell someone that the people who made the decision are trolls?... Well, she shouldn't say that, it could potentially cost her her job. "Sometimes, adults make decisions for different reasons. While you were clearly the best candidate, the most experienced in leadership... it was thought that, perhaps, if the opportunity were provided to someone else, that maybe they would rise to the occasion..." and this was making no sense. "By giving someone an opportunity to be seen as rising above the pack, it may instill in them the motivation to be great, but you Kurumi... you're already great."
Never before had she wanted to hug a student so tight...

"Okay, Professor. I'll be sure to not drown any of the plants." She said with a little chuckle.
Getting nervous all of a sudden, she shyly asked, "Um Professor? Do you mind if I ask a question not relating to the task force? I really love plants and flowers and I have my own garden back home. The thing is that my parents are muggles and I would love to have a magical plant in my garden."
She said this in a rush as if she was afraid that Professor Bentley would stop her from talking.
She continued, "And...my mom said that was okay for me to have one but obvious not one that could be dangerous to us or of course be a danger to the secrecy of the magical world. What plant could you recommend for me?"
Aurora finally fell quiet.
