List of Herbs; Oregano, Peppermint, Lavender, Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Catnip
November

Plant Details - Oregano; has pinkish-purple flowers and olive green leaves shaped like spades
Common Uses - Culinary (flavouring) ; Medicinal (antiseptic/antioxidant)
Personal Uses - Sprinkling some on tasteless pizza because the elves can't ALWAYS cook fantastically. Pizza would be very icky-tasting without it. Ode to Oregano.

Plant Details - Peppermint; has a smooth stem that is almost square-like, wide, dark green leaves that feel fuzzy, and violet blooms
Common Uses - Culinary (flavouring in teas, ice creams, chewing gum, candies) ; Medicinal (toothpaste)
Personal Uses - Offering mints to some ickle children who don't realize that there is something called bad breath and that they have it. The world would be very smelly without mint.

Plant Details - Lavender; has miniature purple flowers, leaves are slightly toothed and covered in fuzzy hairs, grows short and bushy
Common Uses - Culinary (flavouring in teas, baked goods) ; Medicinal ( treatments/creams for aches or burns) ; Perfume (body sprays, lotions, candles)
Personal Use - Hopped down to the Kitchens to get a cup of tea, sweetened with lavender, after Quidditch practice, because I was chilled to the bone and I felt tired. And what's better for the cold, worn bones of a little girl than some sweet, hot tea?

Plant Details - Aloe Vera; has succulent, fleshy leaves, spiky and toothed
Common Uses - Medicinal (lotion, laxative, ointment, gel, other forms that remedy skin conditions, asthma, eczema, diabetes, epilepsy, burns)
Personal Use - Rubbing some on my hands to keep them soft because I would prefer not to have bear paws, thanks. The keeps your skin silky smooth and not at all rough, dry, or cracked. It's, in my opinion, the most reliable lotion ingredient you can find. Works very well.

December

Plant Details - Chamomile; nearly daisy-like with soft white petals and a yellow center
Common Uses - Culinary (teas) ; Medicinal (sedative for inflamation, abdominal pains, congestion, indigestion, headaches, nausea)
Personal Use - Had a bad cold, so I drank some chamomile tea. It is very calming, soothing, and it tasted almost as sweet as the lavendar tea. I felt much better the next morning. This stuff works wonders!

Plant Details - Catnip; white blossoms with greyish-green leaves and lilac-coloured spots
Common Uses - Medicinal (Anesthetic, Antibiotic, Anti-Rheumatic, Antispasmodic, muscular aches/pains, etc.) Culinary (Teas, aromatic herb in salads)
Personal Use - Had some salad with catnip in it the other day. It has a unique scent, very intriguing. I enjoyed it, I'm going to have another helping next week.

SPOILER!!: Entries
SPOILER!!: Basil
Plant Details: Basil, Large leaves that are shiny and white flowers
Common uses: For cooking and some used for medicinal purposes
Personal use with reflection: What would pesto be without a little basil? Basil adds, if not that much, but at least a little taste to the pesto. And it makes pesto delicious. Yumyum.

SPOILER!!: Chamomile
Plant Details: Chamomile (or camomile), tiny Daisy-like flowers
Common uses: Used for medicinal purposes
Personal use with reflection: If you can't sleep at night, try drinking some beverages with chamomile. It tastes best if mixed with a little honey. Yum. Or if you'd like to try it with some lemon as well, it'd taste good. Without chamomile, some people would suffer too much insomnia... and without chamomile, where's the burst of flavors mixed with honey or lemon?

December
SPOILER!!: Entries
SPOILER!!: Rosemary
Plant Details: Rosemary, woody with needle-like leaves that are evergreen in colors
Common uses: It is an ornamental plant which means people use it (specifically its flowers) to decorate their homes. The oil is also used for fragrances like perfume and colognes. They can also be used for medicinal and culinary uses.
Personal use with reflection: As usual, it would be because of food. I mean, it adds flavor to the dish and everything. Have any of you even tried rosemary chicken or rosemary roast potatoes? If you haven't, then you're missing out a great part of life.

SPOILER!!: Mint
Plant Details: Mint or known as Mentha, erect square branched stems and have a variety color of leaves and flowers
Common uses: Used for culinary, medicinal, cosmetic uses and oil used for making insecticides
Personal use with reflection: I've tried these mints with dishes before. Some Muggle restaurants, I've asked the waiters, used mint in cooking their dishes. If you eat those leaves, they tasted sweet but have a cooling aftertaste which makes you feel quite refreshed. The tea my mother used to make have mint as well. And, really, they taste quite good.

January
SPOILER!!: Entries
SPOILER!!: Aloe Vera
Plant Details: Aloe Vera is stemless. Its leaves are thick and flesh-like that are colored green or greenish grey.
Common uses: Aloe Vera is used for medicinal purposes and dietary supplements.
Personal use with reflection: My mum used Aloe Vera on my wound when I was younger. But it cannot protect a wound for so long. It can be a temporary replacement for wound medicine or something. My mum and sister also use these moisturizers with Aloe Vera to protect their skin.

SPOILER!!: Bay Laurel or Bay Leaf
Plant Details: Bay Leafl comes from a Laurel Tree. The leaves a green and glossy. Bay leaf is the fragrant or aromatic leaf from the tree Bay Laurel
Common uses: They are used for medicinal and culinary purposes.
Personal use with reflection: Fancy restaurants use bay leaf in their dishes because of its aroma. It makes the dish smell good. Some of the soups and pies have bay leaf as one of their ingredients. I have noticed the difference of dishes with and without bay lead and their a whole lot difference with the smell.

February
SPOILER!!: Entries
SPOILER!!: Dill
Plant Details: Dill is a perennial or annual herb. They have slender stems, soft leaves, and white or yellow flowers.
Common uses: Dill is commonly used for culinary and traditional uses (ex. medicine).
Personal use with reflection: My mom used to add dill to her recipe of homemade chicken soup. She makes me the soup when I'm ill or when it's cold. She also explained to me the dill adds flavor and aroma to the dish and the result would not be the same if compared with soup without dill.

SPOILER!!: Sage
Plant Details: It is a perennial herb. It was a woody stem, gray-like leaves, and blue or violet or indigo-ish flowers.
Common uses: Sage is more commonly used for culinary and some therapeutic uses.
Personal use with reflection: Thanksgiving Day is one of the celebrations my family joyfully celebrate before. The turkey stuffing with make has sage in it. Obviously, the turkey tasted great!

Month: November

plant details - Ginger, a root with a whitish colour. I powdered it for my use.
common uses - medicinial and culinary
personal use - I have bad chillblains on my toes. I saw a remedy in which ginger is used. Therefore I used ginger. It helped so much. Ialso like gingerbread men. Ginger is such a useful item for me.

plant details - Chamomile, looks like a daisy with white petals and yellow middle
common uses - Medicinal (great for those Muggles with Chicken Pox and it is a sedative and calm abdominal pain and infamation) and it makes a nice tea
personal use - I like to have Chamomile tea before bedtime. I have a hard time falling asleep and it calms me down.

Both these herbs above I use for medical uses more then the other herbs. From this I realize that herbs are not just for food but also for medicines. For example I like to eat Gingerbread men yet ginger is also good for my toes

~~~
Month: December
plant details - Rosemary, Evergreen, needle like leaves with white, pink purple or blue flowers
common uses - culinary, Decoration, To improve memory, medicine, The leaves are sometimes used to flavor various foods, like stuffings and roast meats.
personal use - As it contains a lemony, pine-like aroma my mother sometimes adds it to grilled fish, roast and vegetables... it combine well with garlic
plant details - Thyme, woody stems with leaves whose colour caries from greyish green to green. Flowers are two lipped and come in colours that range from pink to purple.
common uses - scent, insect repellent and culinary, especially as a condiment
personal use -My mother uses when she roasts chicken as she says it adds a subtle, yet present flavor. She also sometimes uses it to enhance meats, poultry, sauces and vegetable dishes, when I asked my mother about this versatile popular herb she said that it has a fragrant, lemony and delicate flavour
Both herbs I recorded this month I remember its use in the kitchen more then all the other uses. Both of them have a lemony taste... is this just a co-incidence or are they connected in some way?
~~~
Month: January

plant details - Parsley, is bright green, hairless, thin stem and small leaves
common uses - Culinary, garnishus, can be used as a breath freashener and has lots of health benefits
personal use - After having garlic or onion my mother usually makes me have parley as it makes the breath nicer.

Plant Details: Aloe Vera, a spiky, succulent green plant, looks similar to Cactus.
Common Uses: Has many medicinal uses, as well antibacterial properties. Also used in cosmetics. I once saw a wall garden that had aloe vera on, so I guess it can be used for decorations too
Personal Use: One time I fell and scraped my head. Not wanting it to scar and wanting it to heal properly I placed it on my head every day. It helped with the healing. (although being in the sun has made my scar still slighty visible.)

~~~
Month: February
plant details Sunflower-rough hairy stem, 3-12 feet high, its leaves are rough and are 3-12 inches long. The petals are yellow and BRIGHT yellow and in the middle is either brown or orange.
common uses - Culinary- sunflower oil is often used in food and sometimes sunflowers are used to make animal feed. Medicinal- there are diuretic and expectorant properties which are used for coughs, colds and bronchitis. It is also a great soil improver to have a sunflower growing and they are used also as pretty flowers in a garden. Bees also take pollen from it, making honey and wax.
personal use - My father is a healthy eating fanatic and therefore my mother only cooks with oils such as sunflower oil and olive oil. My brothers love to eat sunflower seeds and we have sunflowers growing in our garden!
Plant Details: Lavender a small shrub with grey downy linear leaves and flowers that range between blue and violet. I like the violet ones better though!
Common Uses: Medicinial - its essential oil is very good, in fact it was even used in hospitals during WW1! It is a great anti septic as well and relieves stress! Scent-at home we have lavender scented soap and there are perfumes made out of Lavender! Culinary-some people use it for tea and things.
Personal Use: When I first wanted to grow a flower, my father, nervous that I could not take care of it well got me a Lavender Bush as lavenders are considered to be especially hardy! I was very responsible with it and it looks very pretty and smells divine.
As February is my birthday month, I decided to do some pretty herbs and my favourite ones. I did not even know that a Sun Flower was a herb until I was reading a book which stated that it was a herb! Lavender is also an amazing herb and it is also the favorite colour of Nessie and I!
~~~
Month: March

Plant Details: Taraxacum (Dandelion), leaves are 5-25cm long or longer. simple and basal, entire or lobed, and they form a rosette above the central taproot. The flower head itself are yellow to orange coloured, open at day yet closed at night. Each head has its own hollow stem that rises about 10cm above leaves. When broken it gives off a milky sap. A rosette may contain a few heads and the flower heads are about 2cm in diameter have mainly have ray florets. The flowerhead is surrounded by bracts, the outer bract always reflexes downwards while the inner bract is erect before seeds mature and then flexes downwards to allow seeds to disperse.
The kind I saw in South Africa looked different; they are the T. Officinale variety. After flowering is finished, the dandelion flower head dries out for a day or two. The dried petals and stamens drop off, the bracts curve backwards, and the parachute ball opens into a full sphere. Finally, the seed-bearing parachutes expand and lift out of it. The parachute drops off the achene when it strikes an obstacle. After the seed is released, the parachutes lose their feathered structure and take on a fuzzy, cotton-like appearance, often called "dandelion snow”.
Common Uses: Is a beneficial weed that is a good companion for gardening, as its tap roots will bring up nutrients for shallow rooted plants. It also attracts pollinating insects. Culinary - Dandelion leaves and buds have been a part of traditional Sephardic, Chinese, and Korean cuisine, and in Crete the locals eat them raw or cooked in salads. Can be used to make wine, root bear and in Victorian times they were often eaten. They also have many vitamins in it. Medicinal-dandelion is used in herbal medicine to treat infections, bile and liver problems.
Personal Use: When I visited South Africa, I had a lot of fun blowing it. When I returned to England, I visited a bee farm that has a lot of dandelions to attract bees.

Plant Details: apium graveolens or celery grows to 1 m tall. The leaves are pinnate to bipinnate leaves with rhombic leaflets 3–6 cm long and 2–4 cm broad. The flowers are creamy-white, 2–3 mm diameter, produced in dense compound umbels. The seeds are broad ovoid to globose, 1.5–2 mm long and wide.
Common Uses: Medicinial, yet mainly culinary. I like eating celery stalks.
Personal Use: In my house we love celery. It is what we snack on! It is also great for dieting, my mother is on a new diet and she eats a lot of celery

~~~
Month: April
Plant Details: Apple, a small tree that when ripe its fruit are either red or yellow and measure about an inch across.
Common Uses: Medicinial - an apple a day keeps the doctor away and apples provide energy to the body and also it the easiest vegetable for stomach to digest. Also eating rip apples before going to bed cures constipation and poultice is an old Lincolnshire remedy for sore eyes that uses rotten apples. culinary – cider, pies, cooking and eating plain, scent of apple blossoms is really nice.
Personal Use: I went to pick apples in the orchard now, as they are ready for picking as it is spring.
Plant Details: Peppermint- herb with smooth, squareish stems; broad, dark green leaves with reddish veins and both stems (30–90 cm) and leaves (from 4–9 cm long and 1.5–4 cm broad) are slightly hairy; has purple flowers (6–8 mm long) that bloom in late summer
Common Uses: used as a flavoring in teas, ice creams, candies, chewing gum, and toothpaste and also had medicinial uses such as treating of nausea and stomach cramps. The aroma is said to enhance memory
Personal Uses: My aunt grows peppermint and I once ate it plain yuck. My mother made us pepper mint flavoured ice cream when I went home. I prefer the chocolate kind though. Peppermint chewing gum was eaten by me last night
I went apple picking this month in the fruit orchard
November
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: November 7th
[x] Plant Details :: Stevia, but more commonly known as sweet leaf, is a member of the sunflower family.
[x] Common Uses :: flavoring for meats, salads, omeletes, and vinegars. Also used in jellies and teas.
[x] Personal Use :: due to it being related to oregano, I have only ever used this herb for flavoring when I occasionally cook savory dishes.
This particular herb really is just for seasoning and doesn't have any real medical properties. My mother sometimes used the flower heads for crafts. Afraid I really do not have much to add on this particular herb.
IC entry date: November 19th
[x] Plant Details :: Agastache atropurpurecens is known by many other common names including Korean Mint, Blue Licorice, and Purple Giant Hyssop. It typically blooms from July to September, so it was a pleasant surprise to find some still in the green houses.
[x] Common Uses :: cooking and tea making, but is also used as a medicinal and ornamental plant
[x] Personal Use :: I actually have not used this plant too much, but my grandmother used to use it often in ointments. She once told me that it was among the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
What I like best about this herb is the smell. The leaves and flowers have a mint-like scent, which is actually really nice in tea. I've only ever used it once - since I prefer sweet leaf's flavor - but it is pleasant. I've read that this plant is used in a Korean pancake dish called Jeon, which I've had once. Butterflies are attracted to this plant, so it is sort of relaxing to sit near them. Take in the minty scent and watch butterflies.
December
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: December 3rd
[x] Plant Details :: Helichrysum arenarium, also known as Immortelle or Everlasting, is a December holiday herb that represents 'life everlasting' and is a part of the sunflower family. It is found naturally in Eastern France to Denmark as well as on the mountains of Uzbekistan.
[x] Common Uses :: the flowers in teas and it can also be used for skincare. The plant also promotes new cell growth and the flowers are used in the treatment of gall bladder disorders.
[x] Personal Use :: my grandmother would use this plant for decorative purposes in December, but only once it had been dried. She would also use the flowers to make hand and facial creams because of its anti-wrinkle and skin hydration properties.
I actually have never used this herb myself, so I do not have much of a personal reflection other than what I have observed from my grandmother. I recognized the flower in the greenhouse because I helped her dry them in December. Now that I know they are in the greenhouse, I am tempted to try and brew some tea with them. Once thing that I find appealing about this plant is its meaning, life everlasting. Sometimes this flower is used in arrangements that we take to cemeteries.
IC entry date: December 11th
[x] Plant Details :: Osmanthus fragrans, also known as sweet olive or tea olive, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that produces small orange flowers in late summer and autumn and are native to Asia.
[x] Common Uses :: it is mostly used in teas and jams, but it can also be used to protect clothes from insects
[x] Personal Use :: my mother used it often in jam
In Japan we call this plant 金木犀 kinmokusei and I never really thought about using it for anything other than its smell. Kinmokusei has always been my favorite part of autumn. It was sort of something that marked the official transition between summer and autumn. The scent is sort of a cross between ripe peaches and apricots, but even that doesn't begin to describe the scent. While it is nice in teas, jams, and other such things...I sort of prefer to just sit under them come autumn and enjoy the smell of the flowers.
January
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: January 18th
[x] Plant Details :: Burdock refers to a group of biennial thistles that are used for medicinal and culinary uses and also gave inspiration to the creation of velcro.
[x] Common Uses :: often use for digestive and appetite aid and mainly the root portion of the plant is used
[x] Personal Use :: burdock was always used to make burdock salad and other dishes in my home. Sometimes we would thinly slice it and dry it to make chips.
My favorite way to use this herb is to make something called gobo salad. My brothers and I used to make it all the time with carrots and a mayonnaise based dressed with sesame seeds. The root is mainly used, but grandfather sometimes spoke about using leaves for some medical practices...but I unfortunately never really paid too much attention. The seeds are also useful too I've read, mainly in regards to helping cure skin diseases. I don't know much about its medical uses, but I do know that it is rather delicious to eat.
IC entry date: January 25th
[x] Plant Details :: Trifolium pratense, more commonly known as red clover, is a perennial plant native to Europe, Western Asia and northwest Africa
[x] Common Uses :: it is commonly used to purify the blood but can also be used to provide relief from coughs and bronchitis. It is primarily used for medical purposes and not culinary.
[x] Personal Use :: I actually have no personal use with this herb, unless you count making chain necklaces and headbands
I never really thought about clover as a herb until I found it in my textbook. It had always just been a plant that I used to play with and not anything more than that. You can imagine my surprise when I read that this particular plant can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of bronchitis, burns, cancers, ulcers, sedation, and asthma - among other things. It is also used in an eight-herb essiac tea which I would rather like to try someday.
February
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: February 2nd
[x] Plant Details :: a rose is a woody perennial flowering plant with over 100 species.
[x] Common Uses :: mainly roses are used for decoration and their scent for perfumes, but also in medicines (namely rose hip) and the petals are used in teas.
[x] Personal Use :: I often use the petals in teas and then the rose hips for jam. My grandfather once taught me how to make rose petal honey. When roses bloom, you just drop their petals into a wide-mouth jar and pour honey over them and let them sit for however long you want - or however long you can wait.
Roses are one of those plants that you don't usually think of as a herb. I think that maybe this has to do with how colorful they are. At least my image of herbs are that they are all shades of green and brown, so something as colorful as a rose sort of slips out of the radar. Still, roses can be used in supplements and rose hips are a minor source of Vitamin C and in 2012 were given the title of International Herb of the Year.
IC entry date: February 12th
[x] Plant Details :: this is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed. Ther difference between oatstraw and oats is in their nutritive properties. Oatstraw is lower in calories and higher in Vitamin A (carotenes) and Vitamin C, than the grain alone.
[x] Common Uses :: oatmeal and teas
[x] Personal Use :: I actually have no real personal experience with oatstraw...besides it appearing in my oatmeal in the Great Hall
I've read that oatstraw nourishes strong nerves, helps people deal with stress (Vitamin B complex), and also helps maintain restful sleep patterns. Seems like the right sort of herb to use to make tea this term. I think I might start drinking a cup every night until I am done with my NEWTs.
March
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: March 11th
[x] Plant Details :: known as Herb-of-Grace, rue is a perennial plant native to the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe
[x] Common Uses :: it is often used as a decorative plant and its bitter leaves are sometime added to salads, sandwiches, and vinegar.
[x] Personal Use :: I personally have no experience with this plant
This herb is, unfortunately to a certain extent, a herb that I have to reply completely on information in books to understand its uses. According to my research, rue is used in Brazil as the key ingredient in homemade herbal cough syrups. When this happens it is mashed with caramelized sugar and honey, which actually sounds sort of delicious. It is sort of ironic that despite its medical benefits, exposure to it causes Phytophotodermatitis that then makes the skin burst out in burn-like blisters on the skin. Suppose you should always wear dragonhide gloves when dealing with this plant.
IC entry date: March 29th
[x] Plant Details :: also referred to as the starflower, this is a plant that produces edible flowers.
[x] Common Uses :: The plant is used primarily for culinary and medicinal uses, abut commercial cultivation is mainly as an oilseed
[x] Personal Use :: I often used the flowers at home in salads...or I would just eat them with my brothers while picking them. Mother would sometimes freeze them in ice cubes and then put them in drinks as an edible decoration.
After a bit of digging in the library, I also found out that this plant has some very beneficial medical properties. It can help with hyperactive gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders along with helping with the regulation of one's metabolism and the hormonal system. Definately a flower that us girls should take into consideration.
April
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: April 17th
[x] Plant Details :: Marjoram, which is synonymous with oregano in Middle Eastern countries, is a cold-sensitive perennial herb or undershrub with sweet pine and citrus flavors
[x] Common Uses :: flavoring for meats, salads, omeletes, vinegars. Also used jellies and teas.
[x] Personal Use :: due to it being related to oregano, I have only ever used this herb for when I occasionally cook savory dishes.
This is one of those herbs that really does seem to just be used for culinary purposes and doesn't have any medicinal ones. My other sometimes used the flower heads for crafts and flower arranging, but other than that it was not one that was used often. I'm afraid I really do not have anything further to offer on this particular herb.
IC entry date: April 17th
[x] Plant Details :: flowering herbaceous plant with yellow button flowers whose leaves and flowers are toxic if consumed in large quantities
[x] Common Uses :: medicinal purposes, insect repellents, formerly used as a flavoring for puddings and omelets
[x] Personal Use :: I have no personal experience with this herb
Due to a serious lack of experience with this herb, I once again had to rely on books for information. This little herb has quite a history and is a very useful one! It can be used as an organic insecticide. It was also packed into coffins, wrapped in funeral winding sheets, and tansy wreaths were sometimes placed on the dead as a worm warding type of embalming. It was even used during the American colonial period on meats to repel insects and delay spoilage. Usage of this herb goes as far back as the ancient Greeks in the 8th century. From a historical perspective, I find this herb to be fascinating and I rather wish that I had come across it sooner.
May
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: May 12th
[x] Plant Details :: Peppermint is a cross between cross watermint and spearmint, which makes it a hybrid mint and is typically found in moist environments. Interesting to note is that because it is a hybrid it is incapable producing seeds and there for must reproduce vegetatively.
[x] Common Uses :: long time medicinal use as well as a flavoring agent
[x] Personal Use :: flavoring in teas, ice cream, confectionery and for it's smell
I have had A LOT of exposure to this particular herb ever since I was little. Mostly due to it being used in the teas my grandmother would make along with in cookie and other sweets recipes. I find it interesting that the aroma of peppermint has been found to enhance memory, which makes sense why mother was always crushing fresh peppermint and setting it beside me while I studied - something I still do today.
IC entry date: May 19th
[x] Plant Details :: Marshmallow is a plant that is native to Africa and whose roots are most commonly used to make a confection. It has leaves that are soft and velvety on both sides and produces pale colored flowers
[x] Common Uses :: medicinal and ornamental while roots are used to make confectionery
[x] Personal Use :: None - unless you count eating marshmallows
I only ever knew that this plant had it's roots used to make marshmalllows - the fluffy white sweet that Selina taught me go wonderfully in hot cocoa. However, upon some further research I was surprised to see that the root has been used since the Middle Ages in the treatment of sore throats! The flowers are also sometimes boiled and added to salads as a sort of colorful edible treat. I personally like the root being turned into marshmallow fluff. Selina has made me a fan.
June
SPOILER!!: entries
IC entry date: June 1st
[x] Plant Details :: deciduous shrub found in eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to Ontario and Ohio, and south to North Carolina. It produces berries that are important for Yellow-rumped Warblers.
[x] Common Uses :: wax candles and scent
[x] Personal Use :: none
I purchased a candle made from this berry last Hogsmeade visit and it was a fantastic smell! I can see why this this plant is used for it's scent. I also like that this particular plant is important to the ecosystem and is important to a specific species of birds. Makes you come to appreciate nature so much more when you see the way things are interconnected.
IC entry date: June 10th
[x] Plant Details :: this flowering perennial plant is native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. It often lies flat on the ground and produces small white flowers.
[x] Common Uses :: flavoring agent
[x] Personal Use :: moth deterrent
Grandmother used to dry these and keep them in the closet to keep moths away and mother picked up the habit from her as well. I will admit, in the winter months I do this at Hogwarts as well. However, I have read that you can also use this plant in ice cream and a herbal tea for a gentle sedative effect. Maybe I should use this more in tea to help me sleep at night now that the term is coming to a close and...I am a little apprehensive about leaving. However, you need to be careful with how much of this plant you use too much of it it can cause headaches and, in extreme cases, comas. So...maybe I will just stick to using it to keep moths away.
List of herbs done:
♦ Ginger
♦ Aloe Vera
♦ Mint
♦ Garlic
♦ Thyme
♦ Oregano
♦ Peppermint
♦ Lavender
November
Text Cut: November
Text Cut: Ginger
  • Plant Details: Ginger, a brown fleshy root.
  • Common Uses: Has both medicinal and culinary uses, besides helping with respiratory problems and relieving stress.
  • Personal Use: I love ginger tea! Even a whiff of ginger tea can help improve your mood, and it tastes great too. It is especially useful during the cold weather. Also it leaves me feeling refreshed and calm.
My grandma always stressed on using ginger in almost all the food dishes, claiming that it had a wide range of healing abilities. And apparently it is very much true, as it has been proved that it contains many nutrients, like vitamins and minerals and so on.
Although ginger is often used as a spice, it is now considered as a healthy organic remedy for everyday aches and pains. My mom used to have Ginger tea in the morning to cure her morning sickness.
Text Cut: Aloe Vera
  • Plant Details: Aloe Vera, a spiky, succulent green plant, looks similar to Cactus.
  • Common Uses: Has many medicinal uses, has antibacterial properties. Also used in cosmetics.
  • Personal Use: My finger got a bit burnt during one of my classes, and remembering some text I had read up about Herbology, decided to apply the Aloe Vera gel on my finger. It soothed the area and after a few moments, the burn did look a bit less sore.
We had discussed in the previous lesson in Herbology that Aloe Vera was a very useful herb, and was useful in treating many sicknesses like ulcers and burns, and also it helps in fighting obesity. And it is also used in many cosmetics, in skin creams because apparently it helps to clear the pimples and acne and brings a glow to skin. At least that was what was written on cover of one of the cosmetics.
December
Text Cut: December
Text Cut: Mint
  • Plant Details: Mint, a pleasant smelling herb, whose green leaves are the useful part.
  • Common Uses: It is used in both, medicines and food. It is well known for its properties related to indigestion, stomach cramps, menstrual cramps, flatulence, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and colic in children.
  • Personal Use: Firstly, I like the after-dinner mints. It prevents bad breath, which in turn make me smell good. No one wants to have bad breath, right? Chewing few leaves helps get rid of bad breath, whitens the teeth and leaves a cool sensation in mouth. It strengthens gums and prevents tooth decay.
Mint is one of the herbs that has it all. It grows like a weed, is perfectly safe for use, and is an excellent remedy for reducing symptoms related to digestion. And it tastes good going down!
This wonder herb has benefited us immensely by its medicinal properties through ages. It is used as a home remedy to manage ailments related to digestive tract, oral, respiratory and skin disorders.
And I have heard that mint flavor is often used as air fresheners by muggles. So that proves how aromatic the herb is.
Text Cut: Garlic
  • Plant Details: Garlic, a perennial herb with green flat leaves and a bulb containing 5-10 cloves, covered by white skin.
  • Common Uses: It has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. It is used as a remedy in cases of ulcers, wounds, skin diseases, colds, ear aches, etc to name a few. Also, essential oil is extracted too.
    And it has culinary uses too. It is often a main spice used in Eastern foods.
  • Personal Use: I have been advised to put a few drops of garlic oil on a tooth, if it begins to hurt too much, though the pain relief is only temporary. It is also a preventative measure for colds, flu and other infectious diseases, so I use it accordingly for small bouts.
Garlic is an important medicinal herb that is readily available everywhere. 2 to 4 grams of fresh, minced garlic can be eaten each day. However, when eaten excessively, it can leave a distinct odor on the skin and breath, can cause heartburn, upset stomach and allergic reactions. However the smell can be stopped by Drinking lemon juice or eating a few slices of lemon.
Though it is best known as a culinary herb and vampire retardant, the medicinal benefits and claims have awarded it the name "Wonder Drug among all herbs".
January
Text Cut: January
Text Cut: Thyme
  • Plant Details: Thyme, a long stemmed wooden plant, with small tiny leaves, and flowers in various colors from white to pink. It grows to about 25 cm height.
  • Common Uses: Thyme herb contains thymol, one of the important essential oils, which scientifically have been found to have antiseptic, anti-fungal characteristics.
    Thyme is packed with minerals and vitamins that are essential for optimum health. Its leaves are one of the richest sources of potassium, iron and calcium, which all are the essential minerals required by body to function properly.
    It also helps to relieve throat and bronchial irritation and the spasms of whooping cough. Thyme herb tea is a popular health drink. Thyme has been used in the preparation of season soups, and sauces.
  • Personal Use: I like its flavor when used in food. Also, thyme is often used in cosmetics for its useful properties, and so I like using thyme shampoo, which lessens dandruff.
    Also, it is useful for cough and cold, which is frequent during the cold season like it is nowadays. And thyme herb tea tastes good.
I have heard stories saying that any place where thyme grows wild is a place blessed by the fairies. And my mother and grandmother had told me how they used to plant Thyme in their gardens, saying that as it grew, their money tool increased. I just think that all these are myths, and depends on what one believes.
Text Cut: Oregano
  • Plant Details: Oregano is a herb, whose name means "delight of the mountains" in Greek, which is native to the Mediterranean region. It grows to a height of 20 inches and bears pink or purple flowers.
  • Common Uses: Oregano is a wonderfully aromatic, flavorful herb popularly used in Spanish and Mediterranean cooking. It is also a rich source of vitamins and minerals.
    Besides these culinary uses, Oregano is also used as an antiseptic and as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments. It also has disinfectant and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Personal Use: Oregano tea is used as a gargle for sore throats and a mouthwash to help inhibit bad breath. I also like its flavor. I also sometimes use it as a digestive aid.
According to the folklore and myths, the oregano herb was considered to be the symbol of happiness. And thats why the Greeks and Romans would crown a bride and groom with sprigs of Oregano. Oregano was also considered to be a protective herb that could ward of trouble and meddling individuals.
On a more scientific level, it has been proved that on a per gram fresh weight basis, oregano has demonstrated 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges and 4 times more than blueberries.
February
Text Cut: February
Text Cut: Peppermint
  • Plant Details: Peppermint, a herb with lance-shaped purple-veined, dark green leaves with serrated margins and purple color whorly flowers.
  • Common Uses: Peppermint has many culinary uses as well as medicinal benefits.
    The peppermint leaves are used extensively in the preparation of herbal tea. Also, it is used as a flavoring base in ice creams too. And it is also used in the preparation of soups, and sauces.
    As for medicinal uses, it is useful as cold and flu remedy. It helps in digestion and regular bowel movement.
    Peppermint tea is also useful to relieve the abdominal pains and cramps to women during menstrual cycle. Its comforting and warmth reduces all the symptoms of pre menstrual syndrome.
  • Personal Use: I take these peppermint pills, which act as both mouth freshener and aids in digestion.
    Also, sometimes I suffer from ulcers. At such times, I have been advised to take a cup of peppermint tea with honey. It seems to soothe my insides.
The mufggle scientists are researching the possibility of use of peppermint as protection against cancer.
I have seen some of the skin creams list Peppermint herb as their ingredient. On looking it up, I found that it is highly effective in topical creams used to treat a variety of skin issues. Examples include treatments for hives, rashes, poison oak or poison ivy. When applied to the skin, these ointments have a soothing and healing effect. This is something new that I learnt this time.
Text Cut: Thyme
  • Plant Details: Lavender is a small shrub, with gray linear leaves and pretty flowers ranging from blue to violet. The fresh and dried flower tops are used, as well as some essential oils.
  • Common Uses: steeping a small handful of lavender flowers in boiling water creates a healthful herbal tea? This is just as effective as chamomile for promoting sleep and helping to soothe frazzled nerves.
    Adding either oil or fresh buds to a hot bath will promote relaxation and ease tired muscles.
    Lavender has natural antiseptic properties. Use lavender oil as a protective salve instead of rubbing alcohol
  • Personal Use: Lavender is useful for dandruff problem. Steeping lavender as you would to make tea and then cooling it off, is great to clear up dandruff if used as a rinse daily.
    I used Lavender to help with sunburn when I had gone vacationing in the tropics. It also is an analgesic when applied to skin, so relieves pain.
    And yes, it is especially useful during outdoor camping trips, as it acts as an insect-repellent.
I read in one of the history books in the library that the one of the famous herbologist, Maud Grieve noted that when exposed to Lavender water, lions and tigers in zoos became docile, though I don't really know if it is true or not.
Also, in older times, English women and men had lavender flowers quilted into their hats to "comfort the brains". I know this because I saw a photograph of my ancestors, and grandma explained me the reason for the lavender sprigs in each of their hats.
November
Plant Basics - Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis (Also known as Sweet Balm) ; Triangular shaped green leaves with small white flowers ; Possesses a strong aromatic smell of lemons which it uses to attract insects ; A member of the Mint family.
Common Uses - Mainly used to treat sleeping problems due to its calming aroma. It can stimulate a persons appetite and is often used for treating nervous stomach disorders. The herb has been used for culinary purposes as a result of it's distinct smell.
My Uses - Blended in with ordinary tea to create a lemony flavoured Herbal Tea.
As it is winter and the weather is getting really cold, ordinary tea just isn't enough. Sometimes I find it difficult to sleep at night and so I visited the kitchens where the House Elves helped me to brew up a Herbal Tea which my mum used to make me at home. It sent me to sleep almost instantly and it tasted delicious so I think its a very useful herb to have, plus it smells really good! We grow it in our garden at home and it attracts lots of insects like butterflies and bees. Its not very eye-catching usually but it is when there's a Monarch butterfly perched on its leaves.
SPOILER!!: November
Plant Details: Thyme- Long stemmed plant with many tiny and thin leaves growing on a single stem.
Common Use: Used to add flavour to foods.
Personal use: Frequently used in almost all foods (mostly in dried form since it's flavour is stronger this way) especially pasta sauce. Used after the stem has been removed.
Reflections: My mom uses this flavour in mostly every dish almost every day and this reminds me of when I was younger, my grandmom planted then in her garden and I would help her pick then and set them for drying.
Plant Details: Neem: Evergreen tree but looses all its leaves during extremely hot weather. They are dark green and 3-8 centimetres. Its branches fan out a great distance and grow about 15-20 feet.
Common Use: Flowers and shoots used as food and medicine.
Personal Use: This herb is seldom used at home but it is, the leaves are used only as a flavouring. Neem is used whenever my mother makes East Indian food. Since the herb is most common to Pakistan, India and Bangladesh it can only be fitting to use it so as to bring out some flavours of Indian dishes.
Reflections: Neem is another herb that brings back childhood memories whenever I inhale the aroma of it particularly when my Mom tried to make curry for the first time but ended up burning it.
SPOILER!!: December
Corriander: Small leafy plant. The leaves are bright green and medium sized for a small plant. The stems are green and toward the base the roots are light brown.
Common Use: Leaves, fruits and roots for cooking and medicine
Personal Use: Another common herb used at home though only the leaves are used. They are mostly used when making salsa or any other dippings.
Reflections: I love these leaves, they add a rich citrusy flavour to salsa. I prefer them fresh and served as a garish instead of mixed up in the dippings.
Plant Details: Basil- Small plant with broad deep green leaves.
Common Uses: Culinary & Medicinal use
Personal Use: I've used this loads of time when helping mom in the kitchen, mostly in sauces.
Reflections: Like almost all herbs, I love its scent. Though it can be used whole when cooking, I would chop it up just to inhale the scent better.
SPOILER!!: January
Plant Details: Lavender- leaves vary from simple to dissected and most are often covered with tiny hairs. The flowers grows not in clusters but branched off instead and vary in colours such as black, lilac and blue.
Common Uses: Flowers are used as decorations when garnishing or can be used blended into teas. In medicine, they can be used to treat various cancers.
Personal Use: Used as an infusion to treat a bee sting that I had gotten when I was 9.
Reflections: It's interesting that this herb can be used in slowing down the growth of tumors but it is not directly proven to be effective for cancer treatment.
Plant Details:Scallion- long green leaves and at the base there is a small undeveloped bulb.
Common Uses: Used in foods and salads in both raw and cooked forms.
Personal Use: Scallions are my favourite type of herb so I use it in practically all my foods. Most times they are used raw since whenever it is chewed on there is that crunchy sound.
Reflections: I have always been fascinated by these for a very long time. Its interesting how there's this tiny bulb growing from a long, thin leaf. I remember always examining them and even dissecting the bulb whenever my parents got some from the market.
SPOILER!!: February
Plant Details: Tulsi- A plant about 30-60 cm tall with hairy stems and dark green leaves. The flowers have a purplish colour. This plant has a heavy pleasant scent.
Common Uses: The leaves are particularly used in Thai food; used in medicine for numerous purposes such as treating high blood pressure and diabetes.
Personal Use: used this to help treat my cold. it is particularly useful for this when boiled.
Reflections: I was reluctant to drink this at first. I was first introduced to it by a friend who is of East Indian descent. However, it is used by everyone in my family now when they contract the cold.
Plant Details: Sage- a plant about two feet in height . The flowers range from white to pink o purple in colour. Leaves are green gray but white on the bottom.
Common Uses: Mostly used in cooking and for making oil.
Personal Use: Like many other herbs, this is one used to make slsa and dips.
Reflections:This is said to be a flavourful herb that can also be used for stuffing (along with onions) of turkeys or chickens. Never thought of using those tow ingredients until I read about it. I will be willing to give this a try.
SPOILER!!: March
Plant Details: bay Laurel: A large shrub with shiny, narrow leaves. The flowers ranger from yellow to green and grow in pairs next to a leaf. The fruitis rather small and black.
Common Uses: Leaves are used in cooking; dried fruit can be used to obtain oil which is used in massage therapy.
Personal Use: I have only used the finely chopped leaves in pasta sauces.
Reflections: I don't know much about this herb but I read that it is commonly used when smoking food items particularly meat as it adds a strong flavour.
Plant Details: Dill- a plant with thin stems and soft leaves about 4 to 8 inches long. The flowers range from white to yellow and the seeds are long and thick.
Common Uses: This is used mostly in foods in many countries like Serbia, India, Vietnam and Iran.
Personal use: I have never used this plant/herb.
Reflections: I was surprised to see that this herb was so common in many countries. Even more fascinating were the various names they go by such as ain jaradeh in Arabic, mărar in Romanian and shevid in Iranian.
SPOILER!!: April
Plant Details: Peppermint-A 12- 35 inch plant in length with smooth stems. It has fibrous roots. The leaves are dark green. both the leaves and stem are covered in fine "hair".
Common Uses: Popularly used to make tea and syrup. Also used to make perfume and incense.
Reflections: I have learnt that peppermint is likely to protect against liver disease.
Plant details: Black Pepper-A flowering, green leaf vine with seeds that are dark red when fully ripe.
Common uses: Medicinal, Cooking
Personal uses: I love spicy food, so almost every time I'm ready to have my meals, it's always some extra pepper for me!
Reflections:Black Pepper is believed to cure cold related symptoms such as coughs & congestion.
SPOILER!!: June
Plant Details: Parsley- This plant keeps growing through out the years, that is, the leaves grow in a particular way. It is a tall, green flowering plant.
Common Uses: Culinary
Personal Use: One of the many herbs used in salsas I make.
Reflections: Parsley contains anti oxidants and can help to maintain a healthy immune system.
Plant Details - Aloe Vera, leaves are thick and green with white spike-y teeth.
Common Uses - Used in lotion form for sunburns and to moisturize dry skin
Personal Use - I used lotion with Aloe after the latest Care of Magical creatures lesson because my hands were quite dry after working with the fire crabs.
I think that Aloe Vera is very useful in that this herb can be helpful medicinally to those who have skin problems or other medical issues that require a gentle soothing healing technique.
SPOILER!!: December
Plant Details - Peppermint, dark green leaves with reddish veins and little hairs covering leaves and stems.
Common Uses - medicinal, cooking, also used in products such as shampoo and soap
Personal Use - Mint tea
I used peppermint leaves to make mint tea as a treat on a really cold day. I like that peppermint gives the tea a pop of flavor and it's really soothing on the stomach as well.
Plant Details - Basil: Leaves are green and silky, pungent smell and taste.
Common Uses - Cooking, Potions
Personal Use - Used to brew Antillergen Potion
Plant Details - Parsley: Leaves are bright green and can be curly or flat. Leaves are found at the end of long stems.
Common Uses - Medicinal, Culinary, Potions
Personal Use - Used to brew Antillergen Potion
Plant Details - Ginger: Long narrow leaves, small yellow-green flowers.
Common Uses - Medicinal, Culinary, Potions
Personal Use - Used to brew Antillergen Potion
I used all three of these herbs during my attempt to brew another batch of Antillergen Potion that Professor Lafay taught us about. A friend was having trouble with their allergies and I thought if I was able to brew the potion successfully, I could give it to her as a gift. These herbs are used as ingredients in said potion which makes sense, as two of the three have medicinal purposes.
November
Plant Details: Catnip, greyish-green leaves white flowers, tiny purple spots.
Common Uses: medicinal use, Muggles used catnip in medicine, Used for cat toys. Also used as a bug and insect repellent.
Personal Use: I used some Catnip in my pygmy puffs toy. For some reason he plays with his toys more if there's catnip in his toys. Maybe he is part cat. O_O
This herb smells pretty good. No wonder why cats go crazy for it.
[x] Mentha "Mint"-Has got leaves that range from oblong to lanceolate and they ranged in colour from dark green to yellow and blue. the leaves are rough in their texture. It has got square stems.
[x] Common uses- In cooking as a herb and as a garnish. In cosmetics as a antipruritic and once in the muggle world they even used it as tooth whitener.
[x] Personal Use- I used it yesterday and today and put it in my tea because I wasn't feeling well and my mum used to give it to me in some tea when I was sick back home
[x] Reflections- I like mint because of the flavor and that it can be used in so many things- I like my muggle toothpaste that tastes of mint and of course I love the herb itself
November 22
[x] Lemongrass- Has got long green leaves which have sharp edges. It has a lemony smell and flavor
[x] Common uses- used in herbal teas and cooking because of the lemon flavor.
[x] Personal Use- Had a bit of stomach ache and it was very helpful and soothed it.
[x] Reflections- being muggleborn, I know what man-made medicines can do but it is interesting to me that sometimes the best medicine is what nature makes- in the form of plants and herbs.
December 10
[x] Sage-Has got medium sized leaves. The colour of the leaves are a dark green with some light green around the edges.
[x] Common uses- In cooking as a herb. Sage is considered to be a healing herb that can help improve memory and lessen pain.
December 27
[x] Garlic-Has a small white bulb at the end of a long leavy green stem.
[x] Common uses- In cooking as a herb.
[x] Personal Use- I guess that the house elves used a little too much in the stew during lunch because I somehow got a mouthful. I love garlic but a mouthful is a little too much
[x] Reflections- It is interesting that garlic is one of the herbs used a lot in superstitions like against vampires, etc.
Text Cut: January
January 10
[x] Ginger- has got white and pink buds which bloom into yellow flowers.
[x] Common uses- In cooking.
[x] Personal Use- I had a ginger cake yesterday which was yummy.
January 30
[x] Lavender- has got little purple oval shaped flowers
[x] Common uses- in medicine and as a tea.
[x] Personal Use- A few days ago, I watched some cats go crazy when they came across it while I was walking around in the grounds.
Text Cut: March
March 11
[x] Celery- has got a long thick stem with small green leaves on the end
[x] Common uses- Both the leaves and stem are used for cooking
Text Cut: April
April 15
[x] Parsley- has got a thin stem with medium-sized green spade shaped leaves.
[x] Common uses- Used as a herb in cooking and as a garnish
[x] Personal Use- The house-elves put some in a dish that I tried-- I did not like it. I've found that I don't care for the taste of parsley
[x] Reflections- I honestly don't have a reflection for this horrible herb. I hate it. Period.
[x] Common uses- In cooking as a spice and in medicine as a oil used as antiseptic.
[x] Personal Use- Saw it written down in a potion recipe in my potion book. I thought that it was interesting that a common herb would be used in a old recipe so I looked the herb up.
[x] Reflections- Thyme was used in Ancient Egypt in the embalming fluid. That is a disgusting fact in my opinion. I really did not to know that!
May 15
[x] Rosemary- it has a thin stem with thin little green leaves. Sometimes there are flowers that bloom on it as well.
[x] Common uses- As a herb in cooking
[x] Personal Use- I planted some in the student garden today because I really like the taste of it in food and the overall smell.
[x] Reflections- I love the name Rosemary. It is so dainty.
Text Cut: June
June 6
[x] Reflections- I love the strong smell and I like that it takes away the pain.
June 17
[x] Oregano- has got thin stems and tiny green leaves that grow in groups of threes
[x] Common uses- used in cooking as a herb and as an antiseptic
[x] Personal Use- Added some crush oregano to my lunch today which just so happened to be pizza with mushrooms and onions. The house elves outdid themselves.
[x] Reflections- I still cannot get over how many herbs I've come across that can be used as medicine and in cooking. So interesting in my opinion!
Text Cut: July
[x] Common uses- in cooking as a spice and in traditional medicine
[x] Personal Use- Found some buds laying on the ground. They looked interesting so I picked them up and looked up what they were.
[x] Reflections- I don't have much to say about this.
July 13
[x] Apple Mint- has got tiny little green and white bulbs that grow in a cluster on a thin but thick stem. It also has got light purple flowers sometimes.
[x] Common uses- Cooking (as a tea, or a jelly) in addition to being a lovely ornamental plant
[x] Common uses- In cooking using the leaves and the seeds.
[x] Personal Use- I had a pie with a lot of coriander in it
[x] Reflections- I don't have any reflections
August 24
[x] Licquorice- the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra from which a sweet flavor can be extracted. The leaves are medium sized shaped like ovals. The flowers range in color from purple to light blue.
[x] Common uses- In cooking in the form of sweets and also in medicine
[x] Personal Use- My mom sent me some licorice for a sweet treat. They are one of my favorite sweets.
[x] Reflections- I just love knowing that my favorite sweet is actually organic in its natural form and does not have any chemicals.
SPOILER!!: Entries
SPOILER!!: Lemon-balm
Plant Details - quilted green leaves with spots of yellow throughout the leaves.
Common Uses - Used a fragrance and garden border to attract bees to help pollinate.
Personal Use and Reflection- Keeps mosquitos away for one thing. So I like to use the essence in my lotions and sun block during the summer. Its a cost effective bug repellent. And it smells wonderful. A lot of people don't think to include it in cosmetics. Lavender is the go to herb for make-up, but lemon balm is just as good and it has more uses than just a fragrance enhancer.
SPOILER!!: Apple Mint
Plant Details- light purple-pink flowers in a tall conical shape
Common Uses- Can be used to make mint jelly or apple mint couscous or as a salad garnish or flavoring. Or it can be used to make mint tea. It can also be used as an ornamental plat.
Personal use with reflection Mint tea is one of my favorite things in the world. Apple mint had a mor pronounced flavor in tea than the regular mint. It it a very relaxing after a long day of Arthimancy or Ancient Runes.
November
SPOILER!!: Parsley
Plant Details - Parsley. This herb is a bright green hairless plant.
Common Uses - Commonly used within foods in the middle east as a herb, spice or vegetable
Personal use - I used this herb on potatoes I ate in the great hall. I put some of the herb on them to add taste. It was very yummy.
I think that this herb is quite useful. It adds taste to food, which may not necessarily be there. Not only can it be used in just potatoes, but also in stews, and soups, which is very nice to have in the winter. It's clearly very useful in certain cultures food, which is good as we can't all be in the same
SPOILER!!: White Sage
Plant details - White sage or Salvia Apiana. This is an evergreen perennial shrub that is native to the south west united states.
Common uses - Usually used within pinole which is a staple food. Some tribes also used the seed to remove foreign objects from the eye. Some women also made a tea from the root to aid healing and strength after childbirth.
Personal use - Taking from the idea of healing, I used to the herb to make a tea as I wasn't feeling too good. It tasted horrible.
I didn't personally find this herb very useful. The tea I made was horrible. But then maybe I didn't make it right. The many common uses make the plant a very pro-active in providing more than one use, which is good.
SPOILER!!: Entry 1
My mother used to use a flowering herb called lavender. It's not quite tall, but has slender stalks and purple blossoms. It's really fragrant and is a kind of mint. The flowers bloom in a pattern like a whorl, and its leaves are often pinnate.
Generally, people use this herb to make essential oils. These oil smell really good and have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. They're also commonly used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications. Sometimes, people also use them to make a form of sugar.
I normally use lavender to soothe headaches. My mother taught me that rubbing the blooms onto your temples can soothe most kinds of headaches. Migraines or whatever. Sometimes, I boil lavender with some water and strain it before mixing it with some ink to make lavender-scented ink. It's calming and makes for really good birthday or Christmas gifts.
Lavender's really useful. And apparently has a lot more uses, but I can't quite recall. They're really useful for medicine, though. Muggles like them. So do Wizards and Witches. So herbs are useful since everyone uses them.
Entry date: November 22
Plant Details: Aloe Vera; dating back 6,000 years to early Egypt, it is also known as the "plant of immortality." It was given to pharaohs as burial gifts following their deaths. It is a spiky plant with succulent, fleshy leaves composed of three layers.
Common Uses: A remedy for a variety of skin conditions, diabetes, asthma, osteoarthritis, and epilepsy. Taken orally, it can also serve as a laxative. The aloe leaves themselves hold a gel that is useful as an ointment to nurse burns, sunburns, and eczema.
Personal Use: Healing sunburn after prolonged exposure to sunlight out by the lake.
I take a lot of walks around the grounds. While my skin has become fairly accustomed to my walks, sometimes I spend longer lengths of time outside and voilà: burning red skin. Aloe vera is my best friend. Though it can be ingested, I know there are many potential side effects involved such as abdominal pain, cramping, or diarrhea. These side effects don't occur in everyone, of course, but it's always something to keep in mind, isn't it? All in all, aloe vera is incredibly useful - a must-have in all households.
Entry date: November 25
Plant Details: Cinnamon; native to Sri Lanka, it can be found inside the bark of trees of the genus Cinnamomum. The bark itself is brown and is often ground into smaller particles for a variety of uses.
Common Uses: Culinary purposes, potions, traditional medicine. It aids against bronchitis and gastrointestinal problems; it soothes the digestive system. It also helps people with diabetes metabolise sugar better. Some even think cinnamon can help cure the traditional cold and flu.
Personal Use: Candies, such as a Bertie Botts Every Flavour Bean, and cinnamon in some tasty cookies courtesy of the house elves. I also added a bit of cinnamon to tea after a quick stop off at Madam Puddifoot's in Hogsmeade.
What can't cinnamon do? It's tasty, it heals, it smells nice with its calming aroma... three cheers for cinnamon! I don't think there's an herb that makes me happier. That's why this is rightfully in this first month's entry. It's the best.
December
Text Cut: Entries
Entry date: December 11
Plant Details: Nettle; it has sharp, stinging hairs that grow from its leaves. Both the leaves and hairs have uses. Its heavy usage dates back to medieval Europe where it was used as a diuretic.
Common Uses: Culinary purposes and potion-making are common uses, but it also reduces inflammation and can aid in the treatment of things such as allergies, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and arthritis.
Personal Use: The stinging hairs of the nettle plant were used to make a delicious Nettle tea.
Cold weather means tea weather! Who doesn't like to warm up with some Nettle tea? Considering the health benefits involved with the nettle plant, one should make a habit out of safely ingesting some. Historically, it has immense healing properties, so it seems pretty obvious that nettle is an incredibly powerful plant.
Entry date: December 19
Plant Details: Sage; it has long, fuzzy greenish-grey leaves. This herb dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. "Sage" comes from the Latin "to save," referring to its numerous healing properties.
Common Uses: It is used for culinary purposes, fragrance, and many medical purposes such as aiding in digestion, stopping the bleeding of wounds, reducing coughing, and strengthening the nervous system. It can also lessen swelling and improve brain function.
Personal Use: During our first snowfall, I stayed outside in the cold for an unhealthy amount of time. The next morning, I woke up with a severe cough, so I used sage tea to remedy it. The cough was gone by the next day.
Sage is another one of those herbs that is so powerful and has so many astounding properties that one can't help but swear by it when medical problems arise. Of course, it can't heal everything, but as far as herbs go, this is one of those that I will always keep around my home(and currently do).
January
Text Cut: Entries
Entry date: January 8
Plant Details: Chamomile; of the German variety, it has ten to twenty white petals with one half- to one-inch yellow disk in the center. It can grow up to two feet tall. Its uses date back to ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, and its popularity blossomed throughout the Middle Ages.
Common Uses: Culinary purposes, anti-allergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties as well as treatment for stomach ailments and colds.
Personal Use: Before I came back home from the Christmas holidays, my family made one last grand holiday meal before I departed. Let's just say... I splurged a bit, which led to a very, very upset stomach. My wonderful mum made some chamomile tea to soothe it a bit before I could come physically sick.
While it doesn't make up the tastiest variety of tea, in my opinion, it's certainly not the worst. When one considers how well it aided my illness at the time, however, the pros surely did outweigh the cons. Three cheers for chamomile.
Entry date: January 22
Plant Details: Horsetail; it comes from massive tree-like structures that date back 400 million years. It is a weed that doesn't flower, has a hollow stems and shoots that resemble asparagus, and it has silica crystals that form on the stem and branches that give the tails a feathery appearance.
Common Uses: It is commonly used to stop bleeding, treat ulcers, and heal kidney problems. It is also used in the rebuilding of skin tissues from its silica content; the silica acids form collagen, which helps with cellular regeneration of skin, bone, cartilage, and connective tissue. It is theorized that it may decrease the risk of cancer cell growth with its antioxidants.
Personal Use: It was my birthday! My girlfriend took me out to build a snowman. Unfortunately, we stayed out there a bit too long, so I got frostbitten. Luckily, I stopped by the hospital wing and the healer supplied me with an ointment whose primary healing ingredient was horsetail.
The ointment left a bit of a tingly, tickly feeling as it dried, but the frostbite felt extremely better the next morning. The morning after that, the redness was already subsiding. I could not have been more thankful.
February
Text Cut: Entries
Entry date: February 2
Plant Details: Olive; the tree is a gnarled, long-lived, drought-resistant evergreen that resides in frost-free hillsides and the Mediterranean, cultivated for more than 4,000 years. The fruits can be a variety of colours, ranging from green(unripened) to black(ripened). The leaves are opposite and smooth.
Common Uses: The leaves, fruit, bark, and gum are all used. The fruits are cured for eating and high in antioxidants. Ripe olives are repeatedly pressed to make olive oil, which can be used to preserve food. It is used medicinally as a laxative, liniment, and cosmetics for skin creams. The leaves are antiseptic. The resin from the wood can be used for some perfumes.
Personal Use: I had some olives with pasta one evening in the Great Hall. Tasty dining.
I've read that an olive branch is a sign of peace. I thought that was pretty cool.
Entry date: February 14
Plant Details: Ginger; it is a tropical plant with an aromatic yellowish rhizome. It has green-purple flowers and alternate leaves. The shoots, leaves, and inflorescences are all approved to be consumed raw.
Common Uses: Culinary and medicinal purposes; in Asian medicines, it is used to cure nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach aches. It is common for patients to consume ginger to relieve nausea caused by surgery, pregnancy, or chemotherapy. Inhaled by steam, ginger can also help with lung infections and colds.
Personal Use: It was Valentine's Day but also the Quidditch match against Slytherin. I suffer from bad anxiety in general, but the combination of these two factors sent me over the edge by nine o'clock this morning. Gingerale was the solution to calming my stomach and the feeling that I needed to toss my cookies all morning before the match; I felt better by noon.
I've heard that ginger tea is good for indigestion and flatulence, but I've tried ginger tea; even though I like gingerale, I can't seem to stomach ginger tea. It seems ironic to me that a tea that can aid with indigestion and flatulence can cause my stomach to churn at the taste - but I suppose after a few minutes of digestion, the ginger itself would take the nauseated sensation away, wouldn't it? Curious.
March
Text Cut: Entries
Entry date: March 1
Plant Details: Potato; it has upright branched stems, dark green pinnate leaves, tuber-bearing stolons, dark purple berries, and white-purple summer flowers with yellow anthers. They are found in cool mountainous regions and South America. Everything on the plant that is green, including green potatoes, are poisonous.
Common Uses: They are consumed for their source of protein, vitamins B and C, potash, and starch. Raw potato can also be used directly on the skin along with its juices to soften and clean; when grated, it can soothe sunburn and reduce puffiness under the eyes. When boiled in water, it is said to have sufficient properties to clean silver as well as restore the shine to wood and leather.
Personal Use: I am not sure why I have not documented this one in the past; I suppose I never really thought about a potato as an herb until I came across it in the textbook, but my favorite food in the whole world is mashed potatoes. Today, I had some with my dinner.
It is also referred to as the "Earth Apple," which I thought was pretty funny. Potatoes are much more delicious than apples, and you can do so much more with them!
Entry date: March 19
Plant Details: Star Fruit; resembling its name, it is a star-shaped, golden fruit that grows on a tree. It is found in Asia, the tropics, and the subtropics. The plant has shiny compound leaves arranged in spirals and reddish brown unscented flowers. The flower, leaf, and fruit are all used for different things.
Common Uses: The fruit is consumed raw, in salads, or used to flavor jam. In Indonesia, they are used to prevent gum disease, acne, and hypertension. In Thailand, they are used to reduce blood sugar levels in those with diabetes. The flowers are used locally for coughs; the leaves are useful for rheumatism. Acid from the fruit can polish brass.
Personal Use: In the third seminar this term at the room near the Great Hall, we learned to make jewelry from pieces of fruit. I sliced a star fruit and used it to make a necklace for my girlfriend.
I know that the way I used it wasn't listed under common uses, but I suppose it's not too common to decorate or make jewelry using fruits. It was quite the fine decorative item, though, which makes me wonder what other plants and herbs could be unexpectedly used for aesthetic purposes.
April
Entry date: April 11
Plant Details: Rice; it has long, slim leaf blades with arching stems that carry grouped spikelets of husks with grains inside. Its habitat is in the uplands and lowlands in Southeast Asia. It is the staple diet of half the world as it is easily digested. The grain in the husk is called "paddy." Ripened stems yield Rice oil.
Common Uses: The plant can be used for aesthetic purposes as the straw of the plant can be used to make hats. Rice is quite heavily consumed around the world. Brown rice contains many proteins and vitamin B, is chewier than other rice, and requires a longer time to cook. Converted rice is parboiled then milled to make a white rice that is packed with vitamins and the immense nutritional value of brown rice. Rice porridge has medicinal uses. The roots treat sweats from fevers and the sprouts aid with indigestion as well as strengthen the spleen and stomach.
Personal Use: I had a serving of rice with dinner tonight.
Rice was another often-consumed food of my diet that I never considered to be an herb until I found a very general definition of an herb that said an herb is "in short, a useful plant." I think rice is one of the most useful plants! It's tasty, healthy, and is a good staple of one's diet.
Plant Details: English Daisy; it is a perennial that has flat rosettes of scalloped basil leaves and tiny composite flower heads. The flowers have white ray florets and inner yellow disk florets. They typically grow in grassy areas and meadows in Europe and Western Asia. The bright yellow-colored disk attracts bees and butterflies for pollination. They can be produced from spring to autumn.
Common Uses: These daisies are commonly used for aesthetic purposes and given as gifts. The young leaves, flower petals, and boiled or pickled roots are commonly used in salads. The leaves are also used on wounds and bruises. An infusion of the flower added to a bath is believed to relieve the skin of winter dryness, and it can also be used to aid with eczema.
Personal Use: I picked three English Daisies to surprise my girlfriend with today, just because she deserved some extra happiness in her day.
This plant is also commonly known as a symbol of innocence. Apparently, they can also provoke allergies, but my girlfriend didn't have any negative reactions to them.
Plant Details: Dill; it has blue-green foliage that is feathery and resembles threads. There are umbels of yellow summer flowers with heads of oval seeds. It grows in very rich, well-drained soil in southern Europe and India. Many parts of the plant are put to use including the flowers, leaves, stems, fruits, and seeds.
Common Uses: The yellow flowers and green fruits have the sweetest flavors; the immature green seed heads have the most flavor and are used for dill pickles, vinegar, and potato salad. Sour cream, meat, and fish are all flavored by immature umbels and leaves of dill. Indian Dill oil treats digestive pain. The seeds are rich in minerals that support a salt-free diet; they aid in digestion and their infusion decreases amounts of flatulence, hiccups, stomach aches, and lack of sleep.
Personal Use: Who doesn't love a good pickle?
I was actually a bit surprised to read that dill aids with indigestion. For some reason, the odd taste makes me think it would cause the opposite to happen. From my experience, the weirder a food tastes, the more likely a consumer is to have indigestion. (Perhaps that's just me, though.)
Entry date: May 17
Plant Details: Allspice; it is a tropical evergreen that has aromatic bark, berries, and leaves. There are bundles of greenish white flowers with a unique scent. The leaves are very glossy and leathery; they have oil glands underneath. It commonly grows in hot, dry sites in tropical America and the West Indies.
Common Uses: When the berries are green yet still mature, they are picked and used to give a spicy, peppery flavor of nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove used in sweet and spicy dishes. Used medicinally, it can relieve chills and flatulence. The berries and leaves have carnation-scented pimento oil which can be used to perfume cosmetics.
Personal Use: I was reading the back of a stick of my deodorant I use daily; a primary ingredient listed was allspice.
Apparently the leaves of allspice form an oil that is used in a concoction for hair and scalp preparation. I guess that makes sense that it would also be used in deodorants.
Entry date: June 3
Plant Details: Sesame; it is an annual plant with a single upright stem, oval leaves, and long seed capsules that explode when fully ripened. There is also a purple-white flower in the leaf axils that is tubular and scented. The leaves have very pronounced veins and are pointed at the tip. The plant grows in the hot, dry tropics of Africa. The flowers, leaves, stem, and seeds are all useful. The color of the seeds depend on the plant variety; most are about fifty-five percent oil.
Common Uses: The seeds are loaded with nutrients; they are rich in proteins and vitamins A and E, which can be enhanced further by roasting. They are commonly sprinkled on breads, stir-fries, and pastries; they can also be ground for tahini paste and halva. The stems can be burned and used for fuel. The oil from the seeds are popular in Chinese cooking after it is pressed and refined where it is then used for sunscreens, laxatives, antiseptic ointments, and margarine. The leaves are commonly used in Indonesia to aid with nausea, vertigo, and diarrhea. In China, the seeds and oils are believed to help cure poor livers and kidneys as well as paralysis and coughs.
Personal Use: I had a sandwich for lunch with a sesame seed bun. Quite tasty, really.
The oil from the seeds will keep for years and years without turning rancid no matter the climate. If that is not useful, I do not know what is.
Entry date: June 7
Plant Details: Sugar Maple; it is a tree that has light grey bark, greenish yellow spring flowers, and winged autumn fruits. The leaves are smooth and bright green prior to autumn when they turn orange-scarlet. There are usually three to five lobes on a typical Sugar Maple leaf, and they are sharply toothed. The tree grows in deciduous forests in eastern North America. The bark, wood, resin, and seeds are all useful.
Common Uses: The sap can be collected from the first spring flow until the buds swell; it can be drunk fresh, boiled to produce sweet maple syrup, or fermented to make a mild vinegar. The seeds are edible once the wings are removed and they are soaked, boiled, and roasted. Native Americans used to use the inner bark to produce a flour.
Personal Use: I used a very tasty maple syrup to cover my pancakes this morning at breakfast. It was superb.
I am thankful for herbs that taste delicious.
SPOILER!!: Entries
11 November - Mustard
Plant Details - The mustard plant (Brassica juncea) is a flowering perennial that can grow up to 1 meter in height. It produces thin, edible leaves and small yellow flowers, which are followed by half moon pods of seeds.
Plant Use - Both leaves and seeds are edible. The seeds are often ground up and mixed with vinegar or other substances to create a common condiment. A pungent oil can be distilled by grinding the seeds and distilling in water - depending on the distillation, this oil can be used for cooking, medicinal use, as an essential oil, or as an irritant.
Personal Use - My family consumes mustard leaves in salads and as garnishes, due to my mother's interest in gardening and her rather prolific collection of herbaceous plants. I've personally seen the mustard plaster used in dealing with lung ailments and digestive disorders, although with varying success.
Reflection - Mustard is one of those plants that hides behind delicate little flowers and an innocent facade, and yet there is noting timid or demure in the pungent scent, strong flavor, or extraordinary usefulness of this particular plant. I'm reminded that in the language of flowers, the mustard plant speaks 'indifference', which I have always found odd. Indifference is wishy-washy, with no clear opinion either way, and there is nothing wishy-washy in mustard.
I would be very interested in looking into the use of mustard in potions, especially in those used for healing. Because of its potency, limited skin contact with mustard paste is important, but a magical use may be able to extrapolate the positive effects and minimize the negative.
23 November - Meadowsweet
Plant Details - This perennial plant (Filipendula ulmaria) has reddish stems and can grow to a height of 1-2 meters. The leaves are dark, while the undersides are lighter and a bit furry, and the flowered tops contain clusters of small white flower clusters. Meadowsweet has many names, including Queen of the Meadow and Bridewort.
Plant Use - The leaves and flowers are edible and have an aromatic quality, thus the plant is often included in potpourri or strewing herbs. Flavor-wise, the plant has a slight almond flavor that makes it a nice addition to jams, meads, and the like. Meadowsweet root has been used to create Muggle aspirin and other anti-inflammatories, and the leaves can be used to aid in digestion.
Personal Use - My father brews several different pain-relieving potions that make use of meadowsweet as a primary ingredient, which causes a point of contention when he harvests my mother's entire yielding for experimentation. The flowers are also a common addition in bouquets my mother makes, and we use it for flavoring when canning.
Reflection - For ages and ages, Muggles have known how useful meadowsweet is - medicinally, magically, and gastronomically. One of the major medical innovations in the last century, the creation of the painkiller and anti-inflammatory known as aspirin (and others in that family of medicines), relies entirely on compounds found in meadowsweet.
Plus it just smells awesome. I really cannot fathom why meadowsweet, in the language of flowers, speaks 'uselessness', when it is obviously the complete opposite.
December
SPOILER!!: Entries
5 December - Rhubarb
Plant Details - The perennial rhubarb plant has large triangular dark green leaves and produces small clusters of flowers that range in color from white to pink. The plant grows from a short, thick rhizome (the fleshy part of the stem found underground).
Plant Use - The main part of the plant used are the fleshy leaf stalks, known as petioles. Although the stalks can be eaten like celery, they're often boiled down with sugar and used in pies and jams. They can also be pickled or added to savory dishes. The petioles are also considered a laxative and dieting aid. The root produces a dark brown color suitable for dyeing. Rhubarb leaves are considered toxic and should not be ingested.
Personal Use - All parts of the rhubarb plant are used in my home. The petioles are used for pies, especially this time of year, and the roots and leaves are ingredients that my father uses in potions. The leaves in particular, although toxic, can be used in magical concoctions without danger to those ingesting it.
Reflection - I almost feel bad for rhubarb, at least in culinary uses. The plant has very little flavor of its own, which means that it relies on the additives to give it purpose. In the case of pies and jams, the sugar. It's interesting that rhubarb wasn't really considered for culinary purposes until sugar became readily available, which points to my initial conclusion: rhubarb has no personality.
14 December - Common Rue
Plant Details - Common rue grows as a tall and stalky plant, and it produces bluish leaves and yellow flower clusters. The leaves are narrow and elongated.
Plant Use - Rue leaves, especially fresh ones, are often used in cooking, although it has a very bitter taste and should be used sparingly to avoid gastronomic distress. The seeds and berries are also ingested in various parts of the world. Although contact exposure to rue leaves can cause blisters, the plant is used in home remedies as a cough suppressant and is often used ornamentally in gardens. Rue also has uses as a pesticide.
Personal Use - We don't use rue much, as my little brother has a weird allergy to it, but we used to grow it in the garden because it's a very pretty hedge plant. My adoptive sister is Bulgarian, and she knows of recipes that use the plant, but we obviously cannot make those anymore either. Also, my father says that rue leaves are like a reverse-catnip, but I've never tried that out before.
Reflection - In the language of flowers, rue means disdain. I figure that this is one of the most fitting meanings, and most logical, that I've ever found. Rue tastes pretty nasty, it gives my brother spots, and I disdain it.
January
SPOILER!!: Entries
9 January - Atropa Belladonna
Plant Details - This perennial plant can grow up to 1.5 meters in height, most of it being in the branches. The dark leaves are large and oval shapes, while the small deep-purple flowers form a bell-shape. The berries ripen from a pale green to black.
Plant Use - Although highly toxic, belladonna is used medicinally as a pain reliever, muscle relaxant, and anti-inflammatory. It is also used by Muggles to relieve motion sickness and to assist in pupil dilation for eye exams. It is also used, obviously, as a poison. The entire plant is toxic, including leaves, flowers, and berries. In potions, we use the plant for sleeping and dreaming potions, as well as some ancient uses related to flying.
Personal Use - Belladonna is one of those plants that my mother doesn't like having on the property, but that my father finds dead useful in his work. Because it is so toxic, the plants we have are charmed. Still, I know from my father and from Professor Lafay that the berries and leaves are very useful for several Healing potions, as well as some sleeping potions we explored this term.
Reflection - Belladonna flowers are pretty, and the name is pretty, but they're also one of the deadliest things out there. I suppose it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover, or a plant by its flowers. Still, deadly as it is, the plant is so useful that it cannot be easily classified as 'bad'.
17 January - Wolfberry
Plant Details - Wolfberry, or goji berry, is a perennial plant that can grow from 1-3 meters tall. The leaves grow in an alternating pattern up the stalk and tend to be long and spear-shaped. The light-purple flowers are large and bell-shaped, and are produced from the bright red ovoid berries that the plant is known for.
Plant Use - 'Goji berries' are considered to be a Muggle 'superfruit' because of their nutritious nature and their value as an antioxidant. The berries were traditionally eaten dried and added to soups, jams, or teas, although they are now often juiced and added to various drinks or foods. The leaves and young shoots can also be eaten.
Personal Use - The wolfberry doesn't grow really well in our climate, much to the disappointment of my family. These are supposedly super healthy berries that can be added to nearly any food, but they have to be cultivated. My mum buys them dried to add to teas and some of the jams we make, but she would really really like to have one of these in our garden.
Reflection - The wolfberry has a weird name, in my opinion. It's a plant that produces a bright red-orange berry with nothing particularly wolfy about it. I prefer the term goji, if only because it's a lot more fun to say and doesn't make me feel like I'll suddenly sprout fangs if I eat a few in a salad.
February
SPOILER!!: Entries
3 February - Rose
Plant Details - Because there are over 100 species of flowers that all fall under the category of 'rose', these plants can vary from woody shrub to trailing vine. The leaves tend to be alternating and the plants are typically adorned with sharp thorns. The leaves tend to be longer and serrated. The flowers of the rose plant are distinctive and come in many colors. The petals are rounded.
Plant Use - The primary use of the rose plant is decorative, whether given in arrangement or alone. The flowers are distinctive as cut flowers and tend to have deep meanings attached to different shades and species of rose. However, the flower can also be used to make scents or potpourris or to extract rose oil, an ingredient prized for medicinal and cooking purposes. Rose hips, the fruit that the flower comes from, are often used as an ingredient in cooking, cosmetics, and medicine.
Personal Use - Although we almost always have cut roses in vases around the house, my real favorite use of the rose plant is in rose hip tea and rose petal jams. The flavor is unique and proves the plants are useful beyond being merely pretty.
Reflection - I thought I ought to look at some of the prettier plans during the month of February, as some of my classmates are giving each other flowers for Valentine's Day. I'm not sure why roses are considered to be such a prized flower to gift. They're lovely and smell nice, but that's true of lots of flowers. They have loads of other uses, which makes them appealing to me, but as far as getting a bouquet of flowers, I'd much rather get something meaningful over something merely pretty.
23 February- Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Plant Details - Known as 'wild chamomile', this annual plant has a branched, smooth stem that can grow from 15-60 cm. The leaves are long and narrow, with clusters of leaflets making up each leaf. The flowers are comprised of narrow white petals and yellow disc florets in the center (ostensibly, these flowers are what would commonly be called a daisy).
Plant Use - The primary use of the plant comes from the dried flowers, often prepared in a tea. Generally, chamomile is used as a mild sleep aid, an aid to the digestive system, and as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. The plant can also be used as a yellow dye.
Personal Use - My father likes to develop teas, which my mother enjoys serving to her friends. Chamomile, which is aromatic and a lovely addition to any tea, is a favorite ingredient of them both. When I was a little kid, my mother would put a chamomile compress on our foreheads when we had trouble sleeping, and she would often use it to settle upset stomachs. This is a plant with a very clear scent memory for me.
Reflection - Chamomile, as I said previously, brings to mind many pleasant feelings from my childhood, especially of being cared for when sick and of being held by my mother. Even if it didn't have soothing qualities when imbibed as a tea, it probably would be extremely relaxing for me.
Note: Most, if not all of the herbs I've researched I have not actually used, or if I may have during the course of my research, I am not aware that they were in the food or items I have been using at the time, so my journal doesnt include when and what I've used them with, however I did research what their uses are historically, commercially and medically. Hoping for your consideration Ma'am.
Plant Details: Basil(scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum); originally from India. It's known as St. Joseph's Wort in some English-speaking countries. There are many different types. It is also connected to Basilisk, "an herb of Mars and under the Scorpion, and therefore called Basilicon" noted by Nicholas Culpeper. It has large, shiny green leaves, with no points except for the tip.
Common Uses: It is used in a lot of Italian Cuisine, probably due to it's strong flavor. It is also used as an ingredient in Vietnamese Noodle soup, as well as other soups. When soaked, they become jello-ish and can be used in Asian drinks. It is used for it's medicinal properties in the traditional medicinal systems of Tamil, Siddha, and Ayurveda.
Personal use: extra flavor in my Pizza, which I had as a snack.
Reflection: Basil is a very important herb. It gives a lot of bold flavor, without being like a Chili pepper. It's very easy to find, which adds up. I don't know where I would be without it!!
SPOILER!!: November
November 17th-
Ginger
[x] Plant Details - Well it's a little funny looking but that's just the roots, the stalk is pretty okay and it has pretty white and pink buds that blossom into yellow flowers.
[x] Common Uses - A lot of people use it in the kitchen as a meat seasoner so they put it in a lot of stuff their cooking...and in tea because it tastes good I guess.
[x] Personal Use - I use them to make gingerbread men!!! They taste really good and I could eat them all day...just not as much as chocolate frogs!
[x] Reflections - I suppose this herb has a lot of use to people all around the world because it makes food taste good and stuff and that's all that matters because we'd all starve if there was no yummy food...well...I'd starve and I don't wanna starve. Plus it makes the holidays special! What's Christmas without the gingerbread men? Probably not even worth pondering if you ask me. And one more thing! They're really good at hiding! I think I could learn a thing or two from them and their clever way of pretending to be one thing when they're actually another.
November 26th-
Lavender
[x] Plant Details - Lavender is very hard to miss. It's got purple leaves--but not all the time. The leaves can also be blue or lilac...depending on what kind of Lavender you find when you go into your garden.
[x] Common Uses - It's used to make perfumes and some people use it to make different kinds of medicine to make you feel better not that medicine ever helps at all but we'll let them keep thinking that.
[x] Personal Use - My Daddy bought me lots of lavender scented lotions and stuff that smell really good so I use them as often as I can! I use it for decoration too 'cause it looks pretty in my hair.
[x]Reflections - Lavender is a very pretty herb. I find that it makes the world look prettier so of course it's got to be kept around or no one will want to live on earth anymore. I for one wouldn't want to stay on an ugly planet. It's also kinda neat because it has so many different things that you could have fun doing with it--there's just something for everyone if you ask me.
SPOILER!!: December
December 8th-
Basil
[x] Plant Details - Well I don't think it's all that distinguishable...it's pretty green all over and looks like any other shrub. It doesn't really have flowers which makes it even less interesting 'cause they're aren't any pretty colours. The seeds are pretty neat though! if you soak them they get all jelly-like.
[x] Common Uses - In India it's used for medicinal purposes but places like Italy really have the right idea. They put it in food to make it taste good! In general it's a herb meant for the kitchen and lots of other countries use it for that too.
[x] Personal Use - Well I really think it makes food taste good and as stated before I like when food taste good because if it doesn't then I'll starve but what I also find is that the leaves are sometimes sweet and when they are I like carrying them around and smelling them (:
[x] Reflections - This is yet another useful herb. Then again, any herb that makes food yummy is a useful herb. This one in particular is clearly being misused--why use it and make it into yucky medicine when it has such a good reputation for making stuff taste better? It just gives the herb a bad rep if you ask me.
December 14th-
Peppermint
[x] Plant Details - This one doesn't have leaves either but it is kinda easily identifiable. The texture of the leaves is coarse and the leaves are dark green with veins that kinda look red. It's a funny plant because the leaves are also a little hairy~
[x] Common Uses - It's used in making tea (my grandma uses it a lot) but it's also got medicinal value. More importantly it can be used to make flavours of ice-cream and CANDY!! Some people even use it when they're feeling sick 'cause they say it helps get rid of those feelings you have...symptoms?Yeah, those. Bees find them pretty useful too and visit it a lot for nectar to make their yummy honey.
[x] Personal Use - I happen to love ice-cream and even though I don't like mint ice-cream as much as chocolate I still love eating it!! I'm also a big fan of candy no matter what kind so I could eat them all day if there's no chocolate frogs available.
[x] Reflections - Peppermint is just as important as ginger when the Christmas seasons rolls in. It's used to make candy canes and everyone knows santa likes finding one or two of them by the milk and cookies (wouldn't wanna disappoint the jolly old man) so it holds a special place in my herbology heart...which is kept separate from my other heart that stores my love for sugar. Ahem, right, I think it's a great herb and in fact if I liked my step-mother a bit more, I'd probably stop uprooting them from the garden just to mess with her. Yup.
SPOILER!!: January
January 5th-
Dill
[x] Plant Details - The stem is pretty thin and so are the leaves of this herb. It does have flowers but their small too and white or yellow.
[x] Common Uses - So like most herbs it has medicinal uses that hardly anyone uses anymore in most countries and it's used as a spice to add some flair to the food buuuuut, it's also used when making Dill Pickles!!
[x] Personal Use - I don't really use this herb very much actually. I don't like how it makes most food taste so Daddy doesn't put it in our food much even though Amanda likes it. I do eat the dill pickles though! They have to be one of the only foods that are ruined by the herb.
[x] Reflection - There aren't many herbs that I don't like because most of them make food taste good but this one has crossed a line that should never have been crossed. It makes food not taste good and food that doesn't taste good is NOT okay in my book. Sure it makes for some awesome pickles but pickles aren't the only things I eat and consequently I can't see myself liking this one very much at all. Such a shame too...it had such a promising future...
January 12th-
Juniper
[x] Plant Details - This plant has needle looking leaves and they don't change leaves for the autumn like most 'cause they're evergreens. It has seeds which are usually blue but can sometimes be red-brown or orange.
[x] Common Uses - A lot of wizards put it on their doors because it can be used as a form of protection but as with most things, muggles just use it in foods for flavour and stuff.
[x] Personal Use - Well I've never actually had any reason to use this herb when I think about it but I suppose my Daddy's used it in his cooking before and I always eat his cooking so let's assume I eat that stuff. This means that it's probably somewhere in my kitchen and has provided my food with flavour.
[x] Reflection - Personally I don't see the use of this herb. I don't think I have any evil spirits or anything running around my house and there aren't any dark creatures out to get me so I wouldn't need it in that case. I also don't think it's much different from any of the other herbs my Daddy uses. At the end of the day food's food and it has to make my food yummy so that's that.
SPOILER!!: February
February 3rd-
Saffron
[x] Plant Details - This is a really pretty plant. It has nice purple or is it lavender flowers and these three crimson twig sticks things sticking out of it. It was first grown in Greece.
[x] Common Uses - Though I don't know why anyone would want to do this, the herb can be put into love potions and it can be used to colour food too. It's also been used as dye for like clothes and stuff.
[x] Personal Use - I make it a point of duty to never brew love potions. EVER. However I do occasionally find myself using this one. Like when I want something to do. I use the dye that's made from saffrons and recolour my step-mother's wardrobe. I don't think she usually minds though because she goes to sleep right afterwards!
[x] Reflection - This herb is pure evil. Only a thing that was no good would ever be used in a love potion. Love potions are scary and not worth anyone's time, meaning so is this plant. It should be ashamed of itself for helping to further something as disgusting as love and quite frankly the plant should be made extinct!! But of course it has some redeeming qualities (the dye) so it's all good--for now.
February 24th-
Grass
[x] Plant Details - It's green and has blades and stuff that can sometimes be all prickly but sometimes all nice and soft. There are different shades of green depending on the type of grass it is.
[x] Common Uses - It's used to feed animals who've decided to waste half their life by not eating meat they don't know what they're missing. So like farmers and those people just feed their animals grass because they're too cheap to buy real food...some say it's 'cause it's healthier for the animals so I don't know. Maybe the animals just like the taste? It's also used for lawns and stuff to make the place look really prettiful.
[x] Personal Use - Well I don't know about anyone else but I like rolling around in the grass or laying on it with my friends. I also use it as a base for hunting grasshoppers. The little devils are so hard to get unless you look in the grass.
[x] Reflection - I. Like. Grass. It's so...grassy! It's just nice, I could lie on it all day and pretend my step-mother doesn't exist! I can do just about anything in the grass and it acts like a cushion so I don't get hurt as bad. This is definitely one of nature's better ideas--I would've never thought of it myself. It may not seem like much to most people because they just walk on it everyday without even remembering it but a lot of cool stuff happen in it; ants have little cities in them with little ant technology and everything!
SPOILER!!: March
March 6th-
Rosemary
[x] Plant Details - The leaves on this herb are needle-like and they're also every greens who don't waste their time changing colour every autumn. The flowers that it has are blue, pink, white or purple.
[x] Common Uses - A lot of people use this plant as a decoration to make their gardens look all prettiful. A good choice when you think about it 'cause the plant really looks nice. Some even say it improves memory but you know...I've never tried that so it can't really be proven at the moment. Like most herbs it can be used in cooking and they use it in certain medicines too. The best use is that the leaves are used to flavour MEAT!
[x] Personal Use - Well I don't really use it much to my knowledge but I like chicken and that kind of stuff so I suppose that's how I use it; making my food taste yummy so I can eat it.
[x] Reflection - This here is a very busy herb. It has a lot of stuff to do and so little time to have it done before it gets eaten. Like it does everything from the decorating to the filling of my stomach; a very important job if you ask me. What I'll never get over is the fact that it might be behind the reason I fell in love with meat. It's just so nice and yummy and not like vegetables and I wouldn't know that if the meat wasn't seasoned--I might have even believed that the veggies were better! I don't like that thought at all.
March 11th-
Honeysuckle
[x] Plant Details - This herb has so many different species that it gets ridiculous! I think it has like over 100 or something! The leaves are all twin like 'cause they go up in twos and the flowers usually grow in twos too.
[x] Common Uses - I remember reading somewhere that it makes your right and left side of your brain even; again, I've never proven this so I don't even know if I believe it. Still, it was in a book so it must be true. It's also used for medicinal stuff like curing headaches and sore throats...I heard it makes you flexible too!
[x] Personal Use - I don't think I've ever used it for any of those purposes before but I know that my grandmother uses the leaves to make tea and I drink that tea whenever I visit her. It doesn't taste so I don't mind. Sometimes when I'm at her house I pick the leaves and walk around smelling them because they smell really good.
[x] Reflection - I think the people who made up the uses of this herb were going about it the wrong way. I mean sure it can be used for medicine and some people claim it can do a bunch of neat tricks but really I just think it serves it's greatest purpose from inside a tea pot. Tea's no substitute for food but it comes awfully close when the other options are intangible. Overall it's a pretty cool plant though. If it can really make a person flexible then I think I want to give that a go and see how it turns out. So far I've only had it a few times but I don't feel anymore flexible. Meh. It might just be a long term thing.
SPOILER!!: April
April 14th-
Lily (Lilium)
[x] Plant Details - Well I wouldn't say this plant is very funny looking but it doesn't look like most others. The stem's just long and it barely has any leaves on it making the flower really stand out. The flower itself is large and it has a nice smell to it. The colours of the flower are usually: white, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple so it's very eye catching.
[x] Common Uses - Muggles use it a lot, specifically Chinese muggles and they think it can be used to keep you cool during the summer. I don't know where they got that from but you know...to each his own. They also put it in their food, using it in the dry form and some of them use it to thicken soup. Now witches and wizards have found a better use...curing love potions.
[x] Personal Use - ...Umm well I don't really use it the way everyone else does you see because well I just like sticking them in my hair and making my hair look pretty. Most times I stick them in Felix's fur too then we can match for the whole day! Sometimes it really depends on the mood I'm in...if I'm bored enough I tell Jeremy it's a beauty sucking plant and he'll grow ugly if he annoys me too much.
[x] Reflection - A lot of people make a big fuss about this herb because of the things they think it can do and sometimes just for the sake of food; there's nothing wrong with that mind you but I just think it's such a waste. Why hurt the poor thing when it would look much prettier in ones hair? Doesn't make much sense does it? Sometimes people just need to stop thinking about the bigger things and just focus on how prettiful something is, that's what I try to do hence why I don't go throwing lilies into everything my daddy makes. I do think it was pretty smart to learn that it can be used in curing love potions though. Love potions are nasty things, I don't know who'd wanna make one of those but let's all thank Merlin that the lily's around to fix things right up!
April 30th-
Liquorice (Licorice)
[x] Plant Details - It looks like any other plant to me. It has that stalk thing but it also has leaflets. The flowers themselves are usually long, purple to pale whitish blue. It's roots are sweet tasting.
[x] Common Uses - Many places use this when making candy and even the wizarding world does this with the creation of the licorice wand and some countries use it as a flavour in their sodas. On the flip side it's also used in medicine. Magically though it only gets used in love potions.
[x] Personal Use - This may come as a small shock but I just happen to be a sugar addict and all forms of candy are welcomed. I, myself, love having a good licorice wand in between my chocolate wand eating just so I can add variety to my candy diet and prevent monotony. I don't really have many any uses for it while it's in its plant form though so I guess I don't have a personal use for it before it's processed and stuffed with sugar...
[x] Reflection - This is an interesting plant...but not interesting in the sense that it captures your train of thought or anything like that, more like it just does some cool stuff. From the one plant you can get candy and soda. If that's not a God send then I don't know what is!!! It's basically the two things I could survive off of if I were to ever get stranded on a deserted island somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
SPOILER!!: May
May 4th-
Iris
[x] Plant Details - This plant got it's name from the Greek word meaning rainbow because of all the pretty colours it can be found in. They're much better looking than most other plants and their stems are very straight.
[x] Common Uses - Well I'm guessing people use it for like cleaning and stuff because they say it's used for purification of the house and body. I'm not really sure how that works but I won't question it 'cause they obviously know what they're doing. It's also used in potions that give people a clearer mind so I guess it makes people smarter too.
[x] Personal Use - I've actually never needed to use this plant before so I don't really have much to say in this section. I suppose one day I might want to get smarter and decide to use it but for now it's just there and I don't come into contact with it.
[x] Reflections - This plant is obviously a part of some get rich quick scheme. Any plant that makes you get smarter without actually having to do anything could be considered like that--not that I'm complaining because I might need a clearer mind later on in life. As for the purification bit I don't think I'm sick...so that's a no in the body department and I don't think a plant will help me get my step-mother out of my house. Such a pity too because I'd love it more if it could. As it stands it has no use to me and I can't help but think it serves no purpose. Maybe someone else will see it differently but that's just how I see it.
May 12th-
Hops
[x] Plant Details - It's a very funny looking flower on a very funny named plant. It's green and has this weird shape--but not weird in a bad way 'cause it kinda looks cool. To me, it kinda looks like a pine cone but obviously it's not.
[x] Common Uses - Healers and other people too use it for helping others fall asleep and with healing them. Muggles use them too because they give things a bitter, tangy flavour. They're also used for flavour in some tisanes...whatever those are...
[x] Personal Use - I wouldn't use this plant even if you paid me well depending on the payment anyway. I don't see myself using anything that makes food bitter and disgusting tasting. No thank you. I don't use this at all.
[x] Reflections - I don't know why anyone would want help falling asleep. It seems to me that if you can't sleep it's possible that you just want more fun and excitement to tire you out. Then there' the whole making things bitter; all the more reason to not like this thing. Honestly, how can a plant live with itself knowing that it makes food all yucky! Ugh! I don't even want to think about it. Food is meant to be enjoyable and bitter food is most certainly not enjoyable. I think this plant should have been wiped out of existence ages ago but you know, some adults actually like that bitter stuff so I guess it'll never happen.
SPOILER!!: June
June 16th- My Birthday!!
Rose
[x] Plant Details - This is a very pretty plant that has flowers with a lot of petals on it. The colours it usually has are like white, yellow, red, pink...and a bunch of colours that can come from those flat colours. It usually has a kinda long stem and the stem's fully of thorns so it's not very good for grabbing...
[x] Common Uses - It makes things prettiful, like if you stick it in your hair or put it on your clothes. It's also used to make perfumes because of the nice smell it has. I know that a few people also use it to in their houses too 'cause they wanna make it look all elegant or something like that.
[x] Personal Use - I just like picking them then smelling them 'cause they smell really good.
[x] Reflections - If it weren't for the fact that this thing is really pretty and smells really good I'd soooo hate it. Lots of people use it for all the wrong reasons like giving it to people because they 'love' them. Rubbish. Such a waste of a good plant and they don't even realize it. I'm all for giving flowers to the next guy...nothing wrong with that but when you add stupid stuff to the gesture like that it totally kills it. Can't it just be appreciated as it is? Gosh. People ruin everything, don't they?
June 24th-
Parsley
[x] Plant Details - A lot of people think of it as a herb, a vegetable and a spice too. It's got green all over and I don't think it has flowers but you know...I could be wrong. wouldn't be the first time. Sadly the plant usually dies after the seeds get mature.
[x] Common Uses - It's mostly used as a spice so it's like put in food to make it taste good and some people who think it's a veggie put it soups and stuff. It has medicinal value too so people use it to help build their immune system.
[x] Personal Use - I don't use this herb at all 'cause I don't know how to cook really but my daddy does and then I eat the food...wait...I guess that's how my personal use comes in so yes I use it to make me want to fill my stomach more.That's about all though seeing as I don't like medicine.
[x] Reflections - I don't really know what to think about this herb. It's good because it makes food taste good and that's all I need to be happy but then it went and took on that whole title of 'vegetable'. Not making things very good for itself if I do say so myself. If you ask me it should stick to one category and that category should simply be being a spice. It'd sure bring a lot more smiles to the dinner table. Think about it, a kid sits down to steak and grins while another sits down to 'nutritional veggies' and gags for the whole night. Just so we're clear I'd be the one with the steak...just saying.
SPOILER!!: July
July 17th-
Primrose
[x] Plant Details - This is one of the earliest blooming plants in the whole of Europe 'cause it flowers in the early spring. It's really nice looking and the flowers look touchable. They're usually pale yellow, white, red, or purple but I don't know if they have more colours. It'd be a shame if they didn't because then it'd mean they didn't come in blue...
[x] Common Uses - In the muggle world a lot of people like putting it in their gardens...obviously to make it look more prettiful. It's used for food too 'cause it's edible but it's also a good medicine for when you get sick in the head; like when you're depressed or something like that...
[x] Personal Use - Well I know it does a lot of neat things and all but honestly it's just another plant I like putting in my hair. I'm sure one day the usage will change but for now I just like picking them in bunches and making something like a primose arch that makes my hair look even more prettiful the only time I care about my hair is when flowers are involved.
[x] Reflections - I'm rather suspicious of this plant. It says it's edible but I've never actually given it a chance. It just makes me feel like I've been wasting food all these years which is not good. No. I suppose I could just be over thinking it but the thought of having food in my hair when it could be n my stomach doesn't sit well with me one bit. Someone should have told me sooner. Granted I would have still decorated my hair with it but at least it would have been an informed action. I'll get over it eventually but for now I'm just sorely disappointed in myself...I should probably try eating everything herb I find before I stick it in my hair...you know...just to make sure it's not edible first.
July 30th-
Slippery Elm
[x] Plant Details - The branches of this tree grow weird...instead of up they go down and the flowers are in clusters together. The branches can be red, brown, or orange which I find a little weird except the brown one. I don't know how people know this but they say the bark is gummy in texture...I don't even wanna know...
[x] Common Uses - It can be used in gardens to keep away pests and other unwelcomed stuff like bugs. The herb's also good for when you have a burn or something when you put it with red raspberries. Some people also use it when they have, a cough, sore throat or stomach problems.
[x] Personal Use - I don't really have much use for this one. When I'm sick or hurt Daddy just takes me to the doctor or I take cough syrup...I also don't own a garden--my step-mother does and quite frankly I don't care what gets into it and destroys it so I wouldn't be using it there either.
[x] Reflections - This is one plant I should try avoiding and keeping away from my house. I've worked too hard trying to destroy Amanda's garden; letting things loose in there...trampling plants...the works, for some herb to simply come up and make the garden a safer place for the plants. I don't have anything against the plants themselves...they're lovely but she isn't so I can't afford to have that stuff anywhere close by. I suppose that if I'm meant to be fair it's a pretty cool plants 'cause I don't know many that actually heals burns and fixes an upset tummy but I stand firmly behind my conviction; the plant's no good to me.
SPOILER!!: August
August 6th-
Typha
[x] Plant Details - On first look these seem pretty plain and stuff but I like the top bit from which it got the name 'cattail'. You can't argue with the fact that it does look like one. It's usually found in wetland areas. They're a little hard to control though and most people have to resort to burning or chopping them down.
[x] Common Uses - Some people put it in wax or fat then they get to light it 'cause it becomes something like a candle. It's also been used to remove poison from water. It's also good in the food department too. If you wait for a certain time you can boil the spikey part and eat it kinda like corn on a cob. I've never tried it but that sounds pretty good sooo...
[x] Personal Use - This plant is more fuuun to play with than it is to eat. I usually talk them and run around chasing Jeremy with them whenever I get the chance. Sometimes I just stick one end in my shorts and pretend I'm a cat then I play with Felix and we have our little moment of bonding.
[x] Reflections - This is actually one of the only plants that makes me change my mind about things always being better once they're edible. I don't usually get the urge to take a bit out of this one because I usually have too much fun with it anyway. I just think it's so cool how much it resembles a cat's tail dreams really do come true. I'll have to try that whole boiling then corn on a cob thing one day though because it sounds yummy. I could probably just have it with some chocolate frogs or something because everything tastes better with chocolate frogs. But then that leaves the question of whether or not it will mess up the good taste of chocolate...maybe I shouldn't risk it.
August 14th-
Valerian
[x] Plant Details - It looks like any old weed on the ground!! It's pretty much just a green plant until around the summer months when it shoots out nice smelling, pink or white flowers. There are some kinds of butterfly and moth babies that eat this herb.
[x] Common Uses - Commonly it's used in medicines that help people who have sleeping problems. When people are having a hard time falling asleep they turn to this herb. Most times it's put into sleeping potions. Along with sleeping potions it's also used in Draught of Living Death.
[x] Personal Use - I have absolutely no reason to ever need to used this one. I don't usually have sleeping problems and when I can't fall asleep I take that as a cue to get more candy and just let loose.
[x] Reflections - Such a terrible plant this one is. Why anyone would complain about not being able to sleep is beyond me. When someone sleeps they miss out on a lot of things that are going on in the world. If I were to go and take a sleeping potion I'd feel terrible in the morning for sure! There'd be too many questions on what I missed and stuff like that. But then when you consider that other potion it can be used it it kinda redeems itself. Taking on the appearance of death sounds pretty cool. I'd wanna try it just for the experience and the plant would be able to help me with that for sure!
[[OOC: Yes we're aware that there's no such word as "prettiful" but she likes using it ]]
✿ Plant Details - Aloe Vera is the herb I used today. Aloe vera has no stem and is very short. The leaves are thick and fleshy. The leaves are pokey and green or greenish-grey. The plant kinda reminds me of a short stubby cactus.
✿ Common Uses - Aloe Vera is used in a lot of medical items, like in dietary supplements and it is also used in dental care.
✿ Personal Use - While I was in Hogsmeade I got a sunburn, it hurt really bad I remembered that my mum always applied Aloe Vera to burns so that is what I did.
✿ The gel was very cold and sticky! It made my sunburn stop hurting for a while.
Aloe barbadensis
Plant Details - Aloe barbadensis. Also known as Curacao aloe, Aloe, Indian Alces, Aloe Vera, Gawarpaltra, Kumari, Ghirita, Lu hui, Barbados aloe. Aloe vera is a part of the lily (Liliaceae) family. Probably originating in northern Africa, aloe vera does not have any naturally occurring populations, but is closely related to the aloes that do occur in northern Africa. Aloe vera has commonly been used in herbal medicines for about 2 000 years. Extracts are widely used in both the cosmetic and alternative medicine industries, being marketed for having healing, soothing, or rejuvenating properties. Aloe is a stemless or very short-stemmed plant that grows 24-39 inches tall. The leaves are thick and fleshy, colouring green to grey-green. The flowers produce in summer, on a spike that grows up to 35 inches tall.
Common Uses - This herb is commonly used for medicinal purposes. It treats burns, sores, insomnia, eye problems, coughs, fever, ear infections, facial, edema, colds, and many other conditions.
Personal Use - A few days ago I burned my lip when eating food that was too hot. After placing something cold on it right away (ice from my water glass), I went and got some aloe. Applying the gel to my lip really helped to sooth the burn and cause it to heal faster.
Reflection - Aloe is a great remedy for burns. I would have felt more pain if I hadn't used the plant to help heal my lip. It also would not have healed as quickly otherwise. I think aloe is something handy to have because it can be kept in your house as a decorative plant, and also help sooth burns and sores etc.
Cinnamomum verum
Plant Details - Cinnamomum verum. Also known as Real Cinnamon, Cinnamomum Zeylancium, or Ceylon Cinnamon. Sri Lanka, India, and Peninsular Malaysia are the only places where Real Cinnamon can be found. Cinnamomum verum is the bark of the cinnamon tree, which is a species of evergreen. The tree can grow up to 40 feet high. The leaves are glossy, ovate, red when young, and green when mature. They have a spicy aroma to them. The flowers are tiny and yellowish-white, and are followed by red berries. The fruit is small (1/2 to 3/4 inch) and pointed. The bark is harvested from young shoots.
Common Uses - This spice is used commonly in cooking. It is used commonly as a spice in many dishes, and used in supplements. It also has medicinal uses, helping prevent and cure diabetes, help circulation, lower bad cholesterol, boost memory, relieve pain, aid digestion, treat the flu, relieve colds, and battle heart disease. It also contains antiseptic properties.
Personal Use - Cinnamon is always great to add to hot chocolate. Especially when it has whipped cream or marshmallows. During Christmas time, I drink a lot of hot chocolate, so the cinnamon was also useful in adding some extra delicious flavour to my hot chocolate. Just like peppermint in tea, it makes the drink so much better in my opinion.
Reflection - Like peppermint, cinnamon is one of my favourite spices. I do not cook much, but when I do I think I should use more cinnamon. It really is great on everything, and I want to experiment with it. I haven't ever tried using it for any of its medicinal properties yet, but the way I see it, if it tastes this good, it also must do an amazing job health-wise. Cinnamon donuts are also amazing.
Lavandula angustifolia
Plant Details - Lavandula angustifolia. Also known as lavender, English lavender, common lavender, narrow-leaved lavender, true lavender. This plant is a part of the mint family, and native to the western Mediterranean, primarily the mountains in northern Spain. It is a strongly aromatic shrub, and can grow up to 6.6 feet tall. It has evergreen leaves and the flowers are a pinkish-purple (lavender) colour, set upon spikes at the top of leafless stems. The species name, angustifolia means ''narrow leaf'' in Latin. It was formally referred to as Lavandula officinalis because of its medicinal properties. Plants with the name officinalis are ones that were traditionally sold in apothecaries, and considered to have medicinal or healthful properties.
Common Uses - This herb is commonly grown ornamentally in gardening and landscaping. It is popular because of its scent, colourful flowers, and ability to live with low water consumption. Its flowers and leaves are used in herbal medicine - either in the form of lavender oil, or as a herbal tea. It is known to be a relaxant, and also helps with pain and stiffness, stress related symptoms, headaches, dizziness, fever, nausea, insect bites, depression, burns, as well as other conditions and illnesses. Lavender is used commercially in products for home use such as lotions, bath oils, shampoos, etc. The flowers can be used in cooking, often as a part of the French herb blend, herbes de Provence.
Personal Use - Since Christmas was approaching, I had decided that I would make Ness a nice present using flowers as she had loved the flower arrangement I had given her. Knowing that she loves purple, and that girls seem to love the smell of lavender, I decided to make her a wreath of lavender. Going down to the student gardens, I picked some of the beautiful flowers. Back in my Common Room, I weaved the flowers together. It took a lot of hard work and I had to make sure that I didn't damage the flowers, but I succeeded.
Reflection - Lavender really is a lovely flower. The scent can be pretty strong, and there were times where I sneezed a lot while making the present... but really it is a pretty flower. I can see why girls tend to love it so much. And if Ness loves the present I made her, I think I will be using lavender more often just for her.
Eupatorium perfoliatum
Plant Details - Eupatorium perfoliatum. Also known as: Feverwort, Indian Sage, Vegetable Antimony, Boneset, Agueweed, teasel, Sweating plant, Thoroughwort, Crosswort, wood boneset. Grows to 3+ feet, and has a distinctive double leaf (one that is long, tapering, pointed, dark green in colour, and shiny on its top surface). Flowers are dense on the plant, and colours range from white to a bluish purple. Its fruits are achenes - in many species, what looks like a ''seed'' really is an achene, a small, dry fruit containing the seed - and have crowns of white bristles on them.
Common Uses - This herb is used for medicinal purposes. It treats fevers (as well as prevents them), colds, aches, pains, rheumatism, broken bones, pneumonia, jaundice, malaria, as well as other injuries, conditions, and illnesses. Mainly the leaves and flowers are used, the latter commonly having been dried after harvest.
Personal Use - Since I was sick with a flu recently, my mom sent me some boneset that she had grown in our garden at home. It came in a powder, and she told me how to brew it in order to make it as a tea. I added boiling water to 1/2 teaspoon of the powder, letting it steep for 15 minutes before drinking. I drank this repeatedly until I felt better.
Reflection - Though I found this tea to be rather helpful, it had a rather bitter taste to it. I am not a huge fan of bitter things (I don't like coffee), so it was rather hard to drink it at first. After a few times drinking this tea, I had decided to see if I could sweeten it with honey (which would also help treat my sore throat). It made the tea taste less bitter, and thus better.
Allium sativum
Plant Details - Allium sativum. Commonly referred as garlic. Garlic is a species of the onion genus (Allium). It is closely related to onions, leeks, chives, shallots, and rakkyo. It has been used for over 7 000 years, is native to central Asia, and was well known by the Ancient Egyptians. Garlic has been a staple in the Mediterranean region for a long time, and is often used as a seasoning in Africa, Asia, and Europe. It has both culinary and medicinal uses. A bulb, it grows up to 2 feet in height. It has hermaphrodite flowers (containing both a staminate and carpellate). Insects and bees pollinate it.
Common Uses - This herb works as a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. It can be used to treat bronchial and lung infections, tuberculosis, tonsillitis, throat infections, pressure, colds, as well as other illnesses and conditions.
Personal Use - I used the garlic to help me treat my flu along with the boneset. While the boneset helped me treat my fever, the garlic helped me to treat my sore throat and runny nose. My mom sent me some cloves along with a jar of honey. Instead of using this as a tea on top of the other one that I had been drinking, I used it as a syrup. I peeled and minced a whole head of garlic and covered it with 1/2 cup of the honey in a small jar. I let it set for over three hours, and then took a teaspoon of it every hour as I needed it.
Reflection - I like garlic, but I still found the taste really strong. The honey helped lessen it a little, as well as boosted the effects of the treatment. It was definitely better when I swallowed the mixture whole. Garlic and honey is a very good remedy for colds even if the taste isn't all that great.
Mentha piperita
Plant Details - Mentha piperita. Also known as peppermint, balm mint, lamb mint, curled mint, brady mint. It is a hybrid mint, a cross between spearmint and watermint. Originating in Europe, it is now cultivated around the world. It is a perennial plant, and grows 12 - 25 inches tall. The leaves are dark green with reddish veins, usually slightly hairy as are the stems. The flowers are purple, are are produced in whorls around the stem, creating think, blunt spikes. As it is a hybrid plant, it is generally sterile (producing no seeds), and produces vegitatively via its rhizomes (stems of a plant that are usually found underground, often sending out roots and shoots from their nodes).
Common Uses - This herb is used in cooking, for candies, teas, cookies, ice cream, beverages, jellies, as a seasoning etc. It is also used for medicinal purposes. The methanol in mint has antiseptic properties. It stimulates the heart and circulation. It is used to treat fever, colds, flu, nausea, Crohn's disease, nasal/sinus/chest congestion, as well as other conditions and illnesses. On top of culinary and medicinal uses, peppermint is also used cosmetically in herbal baths, face washes, and infusions.
Personal Use - Since I had been drinking some pretty bad tasting tea in order to help with the fevers I had, I decided that I would try a better tasting tea as soon as I was all better. Having brought peppermint tea leaves with me to school in case I wanted some tea in winter, I seeped some in boiling water and made myself a drink of nice tea. It was definitely better than the boneset. I drank a few cups over a day.
Reflection - I definitely like mint. Basically every kind of mint that I can think of. I find the flavour soothing and comforting, and it's my favourite tea. This is definitely a herb that I use more than a lot of others, since I do enjoy tea in the winter. I also hear that peppermint oil is beneficial for some things, though I'm not specifically sure what.
