Hufflepuff The Hufflepuff Herald

Welcome to the student driven notice board, just especially for Hufflepuffs: The Hufflepuff Herald! The Herald is a notice board that is updated on a regular basis containing any and all information from the date and time of Quidditch tryouts/practices, classes going on in the school, homework, etc. By keeping you informed, it offers us the chance to gain the most house points in a term!

However, posting in here is restricted to the Hufflepuff Prefects, Quidditch Captain, and Approved Editors ONLY. The Approved Editors will be chosen within the first week of the term. If you wish to submit something for the Herald, then you must PM one of the editors or your Head of House. This is the 19th Edition of the Herald and your current editors are:
Treyen Lockhart (Lockhartian)
Arya Lovegoods (grangerfan8)
Kita Lewis (hermionesclone)
Amy Samson (city_girl_95)
Renesmee Dixon (ortalismusicoh)

Welcome to Hufflepuff!

A very warm COOL and enthusiastic welcome to our newly sorted Hufflepuffs, we hope you guys are having fun already! Congratulations on having the honor of belonging in the best House ever our House of gold and black, it is certainly a joy for us all to have you in it, however, if you do not share the same joy I assure you that Hufflepuff and all its members will grow on you before you realize it.

But not everything is about our newest additions, for all you returning students are equally important to us. You know the rules, and you’re bound not to get lost by now, so, please set a good example around the school, remember you represent Hufflepuff, so, do as a true Badger will do. In other words, Hogwarts is not a zoo, refrain from acting like monkeys, or zebras, or whatever animal you deem appropriate, outside (and inside as well) the privacy of the Common Room lounge.

Now, the most important part…have fun (do try to study in the meantime), and don't pay attention to whoever still thinks there's a man-eating plant on the grounds, Headmaster Tate only has our safety as a priority.

The Herald's History

The Hufflepuff Herald is your number one source of information concerning everything school-related. This is the 19th edition of the Herald, which has switched hands several times: Nabiya MacPherson, Raymond Luxury-Yacht, Evy Abagnale, Evan Cassels, Evzen Ferez, Caitlin White, Amelia Rose, Savannah Mae, Seth Paton, Kayla Winters, Dominic Denton, Tamzin Wood, Kaika Lockhart, Torin Kane, Miranda BelCanto, Sarah Griffin, Lorelai Bristol, Wesley Reagan, Melanie Lockhart and Cedric Leone have all been editors of the Herald. The current editors are Arya Lovegoods (grangerfan8), Isobel VonHue (littledhampir) and Treyen Lockhart (Lockhartian).

(OOC) F.A.Q.

Where can I find my member number?
You can find your member number by clicking on your username to view your profile, and then by looking at the number at the end of the link. For example, mine would be 103589.

What year are we supposed to be in?
It's currently the year of 2075-76.

Do I have to do the homework and attend classes?
No, it is not mandatory. However, if you want to earn house points for Hufflepuff, completing homework and participating in the classes is the best way to do it.

What does OOC mean?
OOC means ''Out Of Character'', while IC means ''In Character''.

How can I get involved in the school story? I feel so out of everything.
There are so many ways to get your character involved in the RPG! The best ways are having them join the Quidditch team, participate in the classes, and meet other students! Also, if you're confused about what's going on in the school's plot line, take a look at Hogwarts, A History; it should help answer a lot of your questions.

Is there a Head Boy and Girl? Are there Prefects?
Indeed there is! They are Evelyn Flores (Roselyn) and Stradivarius Salander (Steelsheen), and can be identified by a Head Boy and Girl Tag, respectively, under their usernames.
In addition, there are still two Prefects for each house, and they will be designated by a Prefect's Badge under their username.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM myself, Karla (Lockhartian), Kailee (littledhampir) or our super amazing HoH (PhoenixRising). You can also go to the Question Thread as well.

Classroom Tips

1. Respect your teachers and classmates.
2. If you come online while the class is already going on, do not announce that you are late. Simply act like your character’s been there the whole time, otherwise teachers will deduct points from our house.
3. If you’ve got to leave before the end of the lesson, do not announce it.
4. Unnecessary chatting in the classroom will not be tolerated.
5. Keep OOC comments to a minimum.
6. When the teacher asks a question, feel free to raise your hand and offer an answer. The quickest answers as well as the most creative answers can be rewarded with house points.
7. Please be patient if the professor doesn’t answer you straight away. We all live in different timezones and have other responsibilities in real life, so it is possible the teacher had to leave for a few minutes/hours.
8. Be creative and have fun!

Hogwarts Grounds. Our beloved Groundskeeper Mr. Stryker is always busy, whereas talking to students or keeping the grounds looking as perfect as possible for us. The grounds are extensive, so make sure to keep an eye out for any volunteers he might be looking to lend a hand or two or four in doing some light chores around them.
The Greenhouses / The Student Graden. Professor Bentley has worked hard over the summer to keep the Student Garden running, and we're sure she'll like to keep both the Garden and the Greenhouses well maintained... Prefect's Note
First of all, I'd like to welcome all of you to Hufflepuff, and as a fellow Hufflepuff I do expect NONE of you to be walking around losing points for our House...or will be expecting that after this note.

I'll tell you in advance, that points are earned by submitting homework in time and attending lessons (and behaving nicely in them), plus any other activity that you see that will involve helping a Professor. So, once you see any of those happen...then earn points.

In regards to anything else, try your best to have a wonderful time this year, and by all means, try not to upset any House-Elf if you do see one.

Go on and be merry.

Prefect Lockhart.

New School 'Rules'

Prefect's Note
We're lagging in house points, but don't worry! It's still early in the term, and there are PLENTY of opportunities for us to gain more, like all that homework listed above. And the lessons too. Be sure to attend those, and BE ON TIME. It seems professors LIKE taking points this term, so we shouldn't give them reason too.

Also, the kitchens are closed, and the elves' cooking still isn't up to it's usual standards, which is very sad-making. But I bet if we keep our dorms extra clean and sing them praises, they'll be back to normal in no time!

Homework

Arithmancy Homework One
Part 1a:
Practice the Arithmos Revelio spell. Using the box you picked up from the lesson, tap the top of the box once with your wand and it will unfold to reveal a walnut. The only problem is that the walnuts each carry the same curse on it that we saw here in class, which is why they are contained in these magical boxes. When you get the spell correct, the number will appear clear and in full, as opposed to seeing incorrect, incomplete or fuzzy numbers.

Remember, if you happen to touch the walnut, you'll only stop moving for about 30 seconds at most. So I don't want to hear that you couldn't complete the assignment due to your own fatality.

Also to note, if your character is younger, it'd be perfectly reasonable for them to NOT get a clear or correct number. That's OKAY. Think about your character's skills and talents, when doing this assignment.

Part 1b:
Using what you know about the spell placed on the walnut, try to open it by bypassing the curse. Be creative. Remember, it doesn't take advanced magic to bypass it, but it does take knowledge of what the spell does and how to counter it.
Parts 1a and 1b SHOULD be done in the RP, minimum three posts [for both parts] for full credit!

Part 1c:
Write 4-8 sentences (max. 10 please!) reaction about the spell and using it to determine information about cursed objects. Did the spell work for you? You may also include reflection on trying to open the walnut.

Part 2:
What would the characteristics be for the following numbers:
63
12
505

If 505 was Kernel/Core in the spell, what would this mean?

If 129 was the Range in a spell number, what does this indicate?

If 63 was the Basis, what does this mean?
Worth 15 points, with possible extra credit for extraordinarily creative efforts.

Due Sunday November 6th, 11:59pm EST (You have about a MONTH to complete this!)
Also to note, pay attention to the guidelines for submitting homework in here, as things have changed from previous terms.

If you encounter any questions regarding the assignments, feel free to PM myself (grangerfan8), Kita (hermionesclone), Karla (Lockhartian) or the Professor who assigned the homework.

New School 'Rules'

First of all, I'd like to welcome Kita Lewis to a new position within the school. She's now Quidditch Captain and we certainly hope everything goes well at the Pitch.

Just remember: All work and no play makes a badger a foul friend. So, play hard, and work just as much, because balance is always good when success is required. Like now, and those points in the race for the House Cup.

Duelling Club Meeting Two - Wednesday 26th October 2011 at 02:00pm EST/06:00pm GMT

Homework
Ancient Runes Lesson Two Homework
Put a ribbon on your little piece of wood and wear it as a necklace. Bless the rune by privately kissing it. Link Professor Christiansen to the post. Then write an essay (3 paragraphs) on an instance the necklace has protected you. Worth 20 points and is due a week from this post, aka October 27, 1pm EST.

Muggle Studies Homework Two:
Option 1:
Go out in the castle and find someone that looks like they need to cut a rug or shake their booties a little bit. Teach a student one of the four dances we learned in class today. It can be any dance of your choice. This should take atleast five good posts. (This means one liners won't count...you must really RP this...)

To receive credit for your amazing dance teacher abilities, you must submit the homework correctly AND send a link to each of your five posts. You can have more than five posts but those are the minimum.

Option 2:
Get creative and write a line dance for your house. Explain the dance to me in paragraph form. That means complete sentences. A paragraph usually has 3-5 complete sentences.

You need to include the following in your dance:
1. Name of your Dance
2. Moves for your Dance (Must have alteast six moves or for you counters out there that's 6-8 counts or 48 counts)
3. Explain what type of music you would do this to. (Fast, slow, rap, hip hop, country, etc.)
4. What type of events would you do this dance at?
5. Give me a brief history of your dance. Have fun with this and be as creative as you want. So tell me where it originated, who wrote it, etc.

Let your imagination figure out how...it could be your heroine/hero has to use them to escape from somewhere, or even to capture an evil villain. Totally up to you.

All I require is that you do 5 PARAGRAPHS MINIMUM - 5 LINES MINIMUM PER PARAGRAPH - and that you make it fun.
This assignment is worth 15 points!

History of Magic Final
In class we have discussed the importance of “little people” in history, as well as the inner workings of a wand.

This final will be broken down into three parts:

Part One: You will choose a “little” person in Wizard history and research about their lives. Then you will write 2 parchments (paragraphs) on them and WHY they are important to Wizard history.

Part Two: After you have finished your research of the person of your choosing. You will be creating a replica of what you think could be the chosen wizard or witches wand. The point is to create a wand you think would fit them. If you find information about their real wand, discard it and only focus on YOUR idea of a wand for them. This will require 3-5 posts in the reference room of researching and creating the wand.

Keep in mind: The core. The wood. The length. And the flexibility.

A working wand is not expected (because as students it would be almost impossible for you to just master Wandlore), just something that resembles a wand. How it is created is not a big issue either (I teach history of magic not charms) as long as you research properly and create the wand. Materials and information can be found in the History of Magic Reference Room (Professor Scabior will also be strolling around in case any help is needed in the room, especially with wand woods).

Spells & Charms that Might be Useful:
The Severing Charm, Incantation: Diffindo
The Gouging Spell, Incantation: Defodio
The Smoothing Spell, Incantation: Glisseo

Part Three: Write 3 parchments on how the wand relates to the wizard and why.

Part Four: There is no part four. I said before there was only three parts. But if you MUST need a part four it would be submitting parts one, the links to part two, and part three.

Mark Breakdown:
Part One: 15 Points
Part Two: 15 Points
Part Three: 20 points
Total: 50 points

If you have any questions feel free to pm Professor Scabior (Kaos.Doodles).
Due: November 28th, 2011 11:59pm EST

MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR WORK.

Charms: The Egg Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to experiment with the given charms and take care of your egg until it hatches. Your egg will hatch if you look after it right. All eggs will need to be kept clean, rust free, polished, and at the appropriate temperature. If your egg is left unattended for too long it is charmed to tarnish, and either cool off or overheat, thus delaying its eventual hatching. What will hatch out of a metal egg? You’ll find that out at the end of the assignment!

You will need to keep a journal to participate. This journal will require TEN entries. You are to make a post in the Journal thread, and edit your post when you have another entry to add. One post per person! In your journal entries, you should link to a place in the school where you are interacting with your egg. Each entry must be linked to a post! That is ten entries and ten posts around the school! Remember its a term long assigment, so the posts/ entries should be spaced out in regard to dates, not all the 'same day'!

The five spells taught, which you are expected to use are:
Argentum Frigidus
Argentum Calidus
Argentum Siccus
Argentum Humidus
Excolo
You’re permitted to use any other charms that your character knows if you think they’ll help.
When finals are on, a thread will be opened in which you can post your character’s egg hatching. This will only happen if you have completed the rest of the assignment! You will be PM’d about what will come out of your egg More information about the hatching portion (or not hatching) will come at that time.

This assignment is worth 50 points and will take place instead of a final. The 50 points will be split up as follows:
Journal Entries
Following Instructions: /5
Readability: /5
Creativity: /10
Total: /20
Linked Posts
Following Instructions: /5
Content & Spell use: /5
Creativity: /10
Total: /20
The hatching:
Creativity: /5
Completion: /5
Total: /10
Total: /50

Things to remember:
> be creative! The assignment is supposed to be experimental and fun.

> the eggs are not alive, but they seem to have quirks. Maybe your egg twitches a lot when it is dirty, maybe it shivers if its too cold. Maybe it likes to wander and rolls off sometimes. As long as it doesn't actually hatch, or come to life, feel free to be creative with what your egg actually does and how it reacts to the different spells and different combinations of spells.

> destroy your egg, get no points. Simple. The eggs are charmed to be pretty strong, and they might fracture or get a teeny tiny dent or whatever, but they shouldn't crack open completely... and if you want to blow your egg up, your character won't get any points. Part of the points will come from following instructions after all!

FAQ
1. OMG I don't have an egg, what shall I do?
If you weren't in the class you can still participate, just pretend your character was there and got an egg along with everyone else. However, please make the effort to read the instructions given in the first lesson! You can find this in the class thread as well as in the reference thread. I won't be telling you how the spells work, you'll need to find that out yourselves.

2. Can I choose what my egg hatches into?
Nope. You will find out what will happen with your egg at the end of the term. You should NOT RP your egg hatching until the hatching thread is posted!

3. What if I don't want my egg to hatch? Will I lose points?
No you won't lose points. If you still do the journal entries, and the posts required, and then post in the hatching thread with your egg doing nothing/not hatching/letting you down... that still counts as participating. It'll be entirely up to you what you do with it all. The point is to experiment and be creative!

4. Should my character carry their egg with them everywhere?
That is up to you! If you want your egg to hatch though, probably leaving it alone in your dorm won't do the job. Professor Schirmer recommends carrying your egg with you at all times, and charming it as required. This way too, you can manage the ten posts you need far more easily.

5. I'm still really confused and not sure what to do.
The point of the assignment is to be creative, and to allow your character to experiment a bit. I don't want to give too much in the way of specifics because the eggs are supposed to be different, so that you can all RP different things working or not working. You can PM me to ask if you are on the right track though.

6. I have a question that isn't answered, how can I find out the answer?
Send me a PM! I'll answer it and post it here if I think its something people need to know!
A specific date hasn't been mentioned but seeing as this is a term long assignment, it will probably be due in by the end of term
The rules on submitting homework is up there in the assignment but make sure to check out the Charms Code of Conduct if you're having any trouble submitting homework. If you have any further questions, feel free to PM Professr Schirmer (Tegz).

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you encounter any questions regarding the assignments, feel free to PM myself (grangerfan8), Kita (hermionesclone), Karla (Lockhartian) or the Professor who assigned the homework.

If you encounter any questions regarding the assignments, feel free to PM myself, Patrice (grangerfan8), Kita (hermionesclone), Karla (Lockhartian) or the Professor who assigned the homework.

The Charms Annexe / Corridor. Professor Schirmer has done some fascinating things with the charms corridor, enchanting the new corridor do a number of things that will leave you dazed and awestruck at it's bewitchments. Editor's Note
Hello all, its Amy here, one of the new Herald editors. Introductions over, I know we're in last place with the points, but come on, we can all get these final few points before end of term exams. So keep revising and keep helping out and being general amazing badgers I know you are.

I hope all of the romances that popped up over valentines day are still going as strong as ever, as badgers are the most loving of the creatures as we all know, but for those who didn't get a bite by cupid, who cares, we're all kind and no one judges.

There's a match coming up soon so drop by Kita and let her know about some Huffie love, and head to the stands when the game's on and cheer for us all. We haven't got that much longer so enjoy the last few months and remember. Keep getting those points. We can still get that cup

-----------------------------------------------------------

Transfiguration Homework Three

What:Provide 4 animal transfiguration spells (animal to animal and/or animal to object)
For each of the spells write one good length paragraph (5 sentences MINIMUM, per paragraph) telling me a situation in which you would use them to your advantage.

And also answer the following questions:
· What is a cross-species transformation?
· Why are cross-species transformations harder to do properly than regular transfiguration?

Worth: 15 points.

Due: No later than 29th November @ 10pm GMT.

Please include the following at the bottom of your homework:
· Character name
· Username
· House
· Year
· User ID number

Make sure you read all the RULES, especially the parts about homework and cheating.

Submit your assignments via PM (Private Message) to me, MeredithRodneyMcKay.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Flying Final, Part 1

You are to RP creating your awesome broom that reflects House spirit, and is worth up to 10 points (at least 8 RP posts). To earn 10 more points, submit your broom (use Paint or another drawing program) by the due date posted in the announcement thread. Here's the catch - you MUST RP creating your broom in the final thread if you want to earn points for the picture.

Hogwarts Banner: Design a Hogwarts banner (450 x 200; no larger than 60kb). Worth up to 5 points. *

House Banner:

*A voting thread will be created after the deadline, so do not share your Hogwarts and/or House banner with ANYONE. Winning banners will be unveiled at the Closing Feast.

You may decide which parts of this final you wish to complete - no one is required to complete all 3 parts.
Due Date:
29 NOV @ 9pm EST

All work must be submitted in one PM (multiple messages will be ignored). PM your work to Professor Vindictus (demented_death_eater) and title your PM "Flying Final". Work submitted after the due date will not be accepted.

Arithmancy Final Assignment

What:
For those in years 1-3:

Using the numbers 1-9, find a character in the school RP (past or present, student or Professor) for each of the four Core Numbers.

Sample of the table to fill out (but you don't have to use the graphic. Just a listing of "Life Path Numbers" and 1 - 9 all the way down, with the full name and birthday will do. I don't even need you to show the work, but I will check it for accuracy if need be)

For those in years 4-7

Using the numbers 1-9, with the exception of Bridge Numbers (where it's 0-8), find a character in the school RP (past or present, student or Professor) for each of the four Core Companion Numbers.

Sample of the table to fill out (but you don't have to use the graphic. Just a listing of "Birth Day Numbers" and 1 - 9 all the way down, with the full name and birthday will do. I don't even need you to show the work, but I will check it for accuracy if need be)
Worth one point for each number/box you successfully manage. If you manage to complete the table, with 100% accuracy, and at most only use ONE of the people's numbers calculated in the lesson, then you'll get extra points to make it even possible of 40 points.

Due: Friday December 2nd, 11:59pm EST (I tried to give you all as long as possible, but I do need a little bit of time to enter the points ;D)
Also to note, pay attention to the guidelines for submitting a homework in the second post of this thread, as things have changed from previous terms.

Editor's Note
Hello fellow Badgers, I'm Renesmee another one of the new Editors. I'd just like to say well done to our quidditch team for wining their match against Ravenclaw, it was a well played game. I hope we can do just as well in the Championships coming up. Also well done to those who played in the Gobstones match. Anyone that wants to should participate in the Constellation Gobstones match..we must show those Ravenclaw's what we're made of.

I know we're still in last place, but that doesn't mean we must give up, we can still win that House Cup trophy. So keep up the good work, do your homework, behave in class and earn as many points as you can.
