Sixteen tables are set up with two stands and burners that adjust to fit your cauldron no matter what size it may be. This is where students can practice brewing any potions they may wish to brew. Along the walls are shelves with every piece of equipment a potioneer would want, flasks, funnels, phials, stirring rods, etc... A closet nearby was filled with many items that students may find useful, extra cauldrons, extra textbooks, extra dragon hide gloves, protective goggles and protective coverobes.
On the board at the front of the room is written in white chalk:
Rules:
Clean up your own mess. I am your professor, not your mother.
Be safe. I don't want to have to explain why there is a stirrer lodged in your eye when we have plenty of protective goggles to go around. If you do not know what you are doing, stop and check your work. Please refrain from causing any explosions or fires. As I already said, I am not your mother, I will not clean up after you.
Be sure you succeed in your potion making. If you waste my ingredients I will charge your parents for them.
Do NOT, under any circumstance, test your potions on school mates... no matter which house they are from!
Do not bother me. I am a busy professor, I will come to you if I think you are experiencing problems.
ooc: THIS ISN'T A CLASS. This thread is just for roleplaying and having fun. It will remain open all term long. Please remember that even though Professor Lafay is not a very nice person, I am. Feel free to PM me with any questions and any problems that you may have. As my predecessor did, if your character is addressing the professor in this lab, please put PROFESSOR LAFAY in the subject line of your post. This will facilitate my response to you.
Gwen walked in the room, holding a huge book in her hands. I wonder why there’s no one here…, the girl thought. Ah, I’m such a bookworm! Of course no one wants to be here…who on this planet (except me) would brew potions when it’s not necessary. Maybe that’s why I got sorted into Ravenclaw…, the girl told herself, trying desperately to find an excuse for herself.
She went straight to a table, put her book down and opened it at a marked page. In the following minutes, she studied it, and then decided to start.
The girl took out a piece of parchment on which she wrote: The Wit-Sharpening Potion . She thought it would be best to note each step, to make sure everything is all right, or, if something goes wrong, she should know where she was mistaken.
Sunflower Girl | Xavier's Double | Dan's Love | Seriously Black
Sarah entered the room. She was surprised to find it empty, except for a young girl. Probably the same year, she thought as she moved towards the Ravenclaw girl. She stopped near the table, kept her bag and cleared her throat. "Ahem-- Hello!" she said, "What's up with you?" she asked.
Gwen started studying the instructions for the potion. Suddenly, she heard a voice behind her. ‘Um…Hello’, she said, looking at the girl, while trying to figure out if she knew her from somewhere. No, not really. As she prepared her cauldron for the potion she listened to her talk. ‘I want to brew a potion, The Wit-Sharpening Potion?’, she explained.
Now, the ingredients…, Gwen told herself, studying the book. First I’ll gather everything I need on the table. It’s going to be easier that way to find the ingredients while making the potion. She moved around, searching for Ground Scarab Beetles. When she finally found them, she brought them to the table. Next: Ginger Root, Armadillo Bile…and… that’s it. Fine, the young ravvie thought as she wrote down the ingredients.
Finally realizing that there was someone else in the room, Gwen turned around looking puzzled. Ah, I hope I was not rude… ‘Would you care to join me?’, she asked, willing to sound nice.

He didn't know if this was a good idea or not. It was probably the worst idea ever. But he still owled Sierra, and she'd agreed to meet him, which was rather surprising, to say the least.
The boy entered the Potions laboratory, and nodded towards Lafay, who was always in there, before finally placing his bag on one of the desks. They wouldn't be working on Potions, really, because he still needed to gather those ingredients for the storeroom. But, he was going to talk to Sierra in a safe environment, and THIS was considered a safe environment for him.

Amazing. He should've chosen the library instead.
The door to the lab opened and Sierra Greingoth walked inside. A quick passing glance around the room told her Treyen had already arrived, but she barely acknowledged him at first. She turned to Professor Lafay and gave her well-respected Head of House a smile before headed over to a chair one the other side of the lab table Treyen was seated at. She still didn't look up toward him, though. She reached into her bag and pulled out a stack of parchment--her notes from last term.
"Treyen," she finally said then finally looked up as she found the parchment she'd been looking for. It'd been a while since they worked together. Nearly a whole school year, really. Things had become complicated for them, at least on her end. She'd somehow developed a crush on him, and then he'd ended up with Ellie--or so she'd heard. She still wanted to ask him about that. She didn't have the nerve right now, though. "Finished meeting up with Kurumi to talk about numbers?"

Why was he feeling like he should be running out of the laboratory as soon as Sierra stepped inside? She was a nice girl after all? No?
Oh, he was feeling like getting away from her because she wasn't even greeting him. Eyes were on her the whole way to the table, and then stayed on her until she said his name. What had he done to her? He was trying very hard to remember any incident that may have provoked such a cold behavior but he came up with nothing. At all. And this couldn't be just because of Quidditch. Plus, she'd seemed rather nice at classes. Sort of.
Either way, he still smiled, even if she didn't deserve it, and nodded, "Sierra," his eyes went to Lafay, just to make sure someone of power was in the room. He was already taking out his journal and about to begin talking to her when...he got confused. Kurumi? His eyebrow was now raised, "We are never finished, truth be told, why do you ask?" he had no idea what Sierra had been truly asking, though.

Sierra followed Treyen's glance toward Professor Lafay. Again, she smiled at her Head of House but turned back to Treyen a second later. "Never finished? You mean, you talk about numbers often?" she asked. Suddenly, she was nervous. Seeing Treyen in class was one thing. There were other students around and a lesson to somewhat distract her. Here in the lab, aside from Lafay and the two other students she saw out of the corner of her eye, it seemed so much more personal. She shrugged. "Just asking."
There was still something she wanted to ask him. Something she'd heard earlier in the school year but still hadn't gotten around to figuring out if it was true or not. "Treyen?" she asked, looking down toward her lap then looking up at him expectantly. "I hear you're Ellie's boyfriend now." She swallowed nervously. Despite the big, bad attitude she usually displayed, she could almost feel her almost-thirteen-year-old heart breaking.

It was actually funny. Because Sierra's expression had managed to change so much in such a little amount of time, that it made him both terrified and curious.Yes, he knew one's mood can shift rather quickly, but in here they had nothing to trigger the shift, except himself...
...Interesting.
The boy smiled her way, again, and nodded, "Yes, exactly. Well, we don't just talk numbers...," he started to say, "...we talk about everything, she's a good friend of mine," that's why they talk about anything that pops into their mind. That's why it's never finished. And he needed to talk to Kurumi about something that will test their friendship. He was NOT looking forward to that. AT ALL.
Why did he have the feeling that there was something more than 'just asking'?
He returned to his journal when Sierra asked for his attention again. Not that she didn't have it already. "Yes?" he said, fixing his eyes on her. Er, what? That wasn't precisely a question, but it sounded like one, because she was asking if what she'd heard was right or wrong. It was neither. "I--what?" he said, frowning, but it didn't last long, he had a small smile after a few moments, "I won't stop being your Potions partner if that's what you're asking," which was so NOT what she was asking.

Sierra looked up at Treyen, though her head was still halfway down, and she nodded just once. "Oh," she replied. Her voice was perhaps weaker than she'd ever known it to be. Having crushes was unknown territory for her, and the only way she was comfortable with dealing with them was to be usual sarcastic self. A comment dangled on the end of her tongue, something about not seeing why anyone would want to be friends with a Dictionary Eater, but she bit it back. She hated the fact that Treyen could bring out the niceness in her. She didn't feel like being nice. She felt too weak then.
So instead she said nothing else about Hollingberry. Besides, she didn't want to spend her time with Treyen talking about that Gryffindor girl anyway. She tried to turn her attention to flipping through pieces of parchment she pulled out that really had nothing to do with Potions at all. They were just distractions really. Then her head shot up toward him and a glare spread across her face. "You think I'm afraid of losing you as a potions partner?" she spat. Wow. History really did repeat itself. Lockharts were self-centered jerks. Is that all she was to him--a potions partner? She noted right then and there than he'd never approached her for anything other than schoolwork. Oh, and that one time on the ship, too; but even then, she bet he only walked by her because he needed her help then, too. "So it's true then? You're Ellie's boyfriend?" Her words were much softer then. She'd gone back to feeling uncertain and insecure.

Oh?
She didn't like Kurumi, did she? Well, there was very little he could do about that, everyone was free to befriend whoever they wanted, unless you managed to encounter Lola Jones. You didn't have a choice there.
He said nothing about that, though. Not that he could add something to the Kurumi comment. Sierra knew what she needed to know, she would've asked otherwise.
But there was a change in her expression. A pretty obvious one since she was glaring at him. What did Conan see in Sierra, anyway? Yeah, yeah, she was nice, but she was absolutely terrifying sometimes, like a little Evelyn. He cast nervous glances at Lafay, before straightening himself on his seat. "Well, yeah, because you wouldn't lose me as a friend, no matter what," well, no, if she slapped him or something then they wouldn't be friends ever again. She could still throw him a bat during Quidditch and it'll be okay, so as long as he played Seeker, of course.
How come this Ellie talk was making him uncomfortable, eh? "Not entirely true, I mean, we're dating, but I haven't asked her to be my girlfriend yet," so, he wasn't her boyfriend but he wanted to. "Why the sudden interest?" he asked, almost raising an eyebrow at her.
And..by the way..those weren't notes from Potions.

Hecate's eyes raised assessing the room while writing down her findings on her new potion. Greene and James were on one side, and Greingoth (the girl) and Lockhart were on the opposite side. The first two were first years... likely to set the place a blaze... the second couple she'd seen on the quidditch pitch... thankfully Greingoth was smart enough not to kill the boy in front of a professor. She summoned her bat Lucille and put it on her desk before her. She was going to have to keep an eye on all four.
Having all the ingredients in front of her, Gwen was ready to start. She turned around to the girl that came along a while ago, but now kind of lost the interest. Hmm, looks like I’m on my own. Just like before…, she thought.
She took a cauldron and cleaned it. Now the last thing I need is this potion to explode. Or worse- I’ll have to start over. All right, so I don’t need to pre-heat the cauldron, she established after having checked out the instructions. Moving on… First ingredient to be added to the cauldron is the armadillo bile. When she was ready to add it, she noticed Lafay looking around. Oh no! What if I do something wrong? I’ll look really stupid and she will yell at me!, the girl thought swallowing heavily.
She finally added three cups of armadillo bile. Next, she started cutting the ginger root. When it was done, she added it in the cauldron.

Presley followed Gwen into the Labratory, and carefully watched as Gwen added ingredients. She waited until the girl paused, not wanting to startle her into spilling something. "Hi, Gwen. Can I work with you?" Presley set down her own cauldron, clean and shiny, next to Gwen's.

As she wanted to go on with the procedure, she heard steps coming towards her, and then the noise stopped. But someone was still there. Please don’t be Lafay, please don’t be Lafay, pleeeease? I just hope I didn’t do something wrong…
When she heard Presley’s voice, Gwen was relieved. ‘Hi!’, she said grinning. Huh, good that it was you. ‘Sure you can…eh…I have already gathered all the ingredients here’, the ravvie said, pointing to the three jars.
‘You need to add 3 cups of armadillo bile… and when you are done with that, you have to start cutting the ginger root and add it in the cauldron’ , Gwen explained and then she made a step backwards from her cauldron. She wanted to wait for Presley to add the ingredients, so that they could go on with the procedure together.
‘Oh, and by the way- I’m writing down each step…so that if something goes wrong we’ll know what the problem is’. There- that seemed intelligent.

Presley did as Gwen instructed, even as she resented having to follow directions of a peer. She would do it, because for some strange reason, she wanted Gwen to like her, and she wanted to try making this potion. If something goes wrong? "Er, how will we know if something goes wrong?" Presley asked the obvious question. Why did being around Gwen always make her feel stupid? She was a smart girl, getting straight O's, except in Herbology, and that was being remedied. So why did Gwen have the power to make her feel four years old without even trying? It was wholly unfair. She pasted on a bright smile, and finished adding the carefully, evenly cut ginger root.

If we do something wrong it’s going to explode right away. So, that means that the problem was with the last thing we added,or did.’Wasn’t that obvious?
‘Umm… all right’, Gwen started saying after Presley was done. Quite fast. Remarkable, the girl thought. ‘So now we need to stir twice counter-clockwise’, she added. And that was what direction… exactly? Left? Right? Right, she decided and did as it said in the instructions she had read, noting this on the piece of parchment. But…this was weird. How could something go wrong from stirring? Meh, beats me...

Sierra caught on to Treyen's nervous glances toward Lafay. She looked toward her Head of House for a second, expecting maybe to see the woman glaring at him or something, but no, not as far as she could tell. Sierra looked back at Treyen. Was he nervous to be around her or something? Looking back on it, she couldn't think of any reason he might be nervous around her.
Well, she had cast him a few glares, but really, she did that to everyone. "Oh," she said, when Treyen mentioned dating Ellie and then asking her to be his girlfriend. She sort of blushed ever-so-slightly and then looked away for a few seconds. She absentmindedly watched to Ravenclaws she didn't even know as they did...something. "That's good then."
She shrugged. She was asking, because she had a crush on him, but she'd never be able to tell him that, especially not now. "I was just seeing what you'd been up to lately. That's all." Topic change, please. "Good seeking skills, by the way."

A soft thud noise coming from the other side of the room caught Sierra's attention. She looked up to see that Lafay had put her bat across her desk. When had that happened? Maybe that's what made Treyen so nervous. She gave her Head of House a small smile before looking back at Treyen. She also made a mental note not to give Lafay a reason to pick up that bat.

Gwen's parchment:
Except Potions didn't always explode! Sometimes they just didn't do as they were supposed to. Presley wanted to point this out to Gwen, but held her peace, stirring counterclockwise. Toward her left. She noticed Gwen stirring right, and hesitated. "Er, Gwen? Counterclockwise is the opposite way the clock runs. "

As Gwen wanted to continue with the procedure, she heard Presley talk. Whatwhatwhaaat??!?!? I can’t believe I messed it up, Gwen thought and cleaned her cauldron as quick as possible. When did I get so stupid?, the ravvie told herself as she added the ingredients… again. ‘Thanks for letting me know’, she nodded, while stirring to her left.
Hopefully Lafay did NOT see this. Maybe I should have done this potion alone… It feels quite bad feeling stupid. However, if it weren’t for Presley… I could have messed the entire potion up.
When she was done with the stirring, she announced Presley: ‘Now we need to add the ground scarab beetles’At least this I can do… After adding the final ingredient, it seemed that it allowed the potion to settle. Noticing that the potion had now a orange/ brown color, Gwen finally started cheering up. Yeees! This is right! It’s how it’s supposed to look! I’m not soooo dumb after all!

Presley nodded as Gwen thanked her for pointing counter-clockwise out. She added the scarab beetles, ground to a fine powder. Her potion seemed more brown than orange. Presley sneaked a glance into Gwen's potion, which was the exact shade it was supposed to be. She grimaced. Maybe if I try... On a whim Presley stirred her potion once clockwise and once counterclockwise. The color shifted until it looked exactly like Gwen's potion. "We did it," she smiled at Gwen. They'd done the potion without teacher supervision! Well, Lafay was in the room, but Presley didn't think she was paying much attention to the two of them, so it really was without teacher supervision.
Presley nodded as Gwen thanked her for pointing counter-clockwise out. She added the scarab beetles, ground to a fine powder. Her potion seemed more brown than orange. Herjenmie swooped into the lab, ruffling his mighty feathers after having squeezed past students in the corridors. "Hoot!" he called proudly, landing on a counter with the letter and package still tied to his legs. Blinking a few times, he waited for the recipient of the mail to get her things.

Dear Presley,
Cheer up child!!!! Don't think I don't know that you're getting gloomy just because you're at Hogwarts. Trust me, I know everything. I'm sending you a package of sweets because nothing says "I don't know what else to do" like chocolate. I love you TONS girlie! I'm really sorry to hear about your friends. Be sure to let them know that if visits to thier places don't work out because of the circumstances, they're of course welcome to stay at our place any time. My words of advice...hmmm. Let the death go, but hold on to the memories. Good? I thought it sounded pretty profound myself. Right now at work we're, well not really working. We're supposed to be livening up the office, so we've gone ahead with plans for a fountain, and fish and stuff. Speaking of that, when you go shopping for things for a fountain, what goes on the list? You know I'm awful at list-making. Some of the people there...some are great and fantastic. Some are a little bit eccentric and go on about a fish they saw that looked like a cow, or turning the waiting room into one big fountain with levitating furniture...well, you can see how easily that would turn into a disaster. I wish you would write to me more often. Until January, I got a letter a week, now it feels more like twice a month, and I miss hearing about your day-to-day adventures! Well, Smile like you're proud to be a Black!
Lots of Love,
Leo
Package: A ten-ten-five inch cardboard box stuffed full of chocolate and other sweets.

Gwen finally stopped thinking that she was stupid when she saw the potion coming out right. She then heard Presley talk and then, while grinning, she replied: ‘Well, we still need to stir for two minutes…in any direction (thankfully)’. After a short break she added :’This helps unify the potion’.
When she wanted to start stirring she heard some noise close to them. Aaaaa –DUCK! she wanted to scream, but managed not to. She did not think of running, so she remained on the same spot. Only her eyes moved around, scanning the place. Hmm…what’s going on? However, when she wanted to finally finish the potion, the girl heard the noise again. At least this time she didn’t get scared (hehe), noticing it was only an owl.

Presley grinned, ever so slightly as she looked at this owl. Leo had really gotten fancy. What happened to his owl? This was the second time he'd sent something with an owl not his own. Presley petted the eagle owl idly as she pulled the letter and package off of it's leg. Of course, Leo had included a couple of owl treats in his package. she pulled two out, and fed them to the large owl as a thank you. Sticking the letter in her pocket, she tured to Gwen. "You want a chocolate frog?" she asked. "My brother just sent me this huge box, and there's no way I'm going toeat it all on my own."

Presley giggled as Gwen looked genuinly (sp?) scared of the owl. Presley turned back to her potion, set her box on the counter, and stirred clockwise.
Herjenmie, spotting the treat, clicked his beak rather testily. Getting a pet from the girl was fine, but what about payment? Chocolate was his favorite. Seeing the sweet being offered to the other girl, he hooted indignantly and flew off. That was the last time he would deliver to girls in the potions lab.
