Default Divination Final

Upon entry to the Divination classroom for the final, it becomes obvious that the decor of the previous lessons was returned to normal. The classroom appears much like a Muggle one, desks lined up a little haphazardly, but still lined up in approximate rows. The ubiquitous bookshelves line their usual wall, and are stocked with cards, stacks of papers, teapots and cups. Professor Bishop is at her desk at the front of the room, flipping through a book (or at least what looks like a book) with a stack of Tarot cards near her as if she might use them at some point. She does look up as everyone enters, giving them a smile and gesturing toward the desks.

Upon each desk is a parchment and quill.

SPOILER!!: final exam

1. What is the basic thread that connects all forms of Divination?

2. Give an example of a card from the Major Arcana, as well as the Minor Arcana, and a brief description of each.

3. Name a form of pyromancy that you haven't already discussed, and its basic theory.

4. Where are most of the commonly-known "oracles" located?

5. Why does one need to read a teacup in a spiral pattern, from rim to base?

Practical:

Do a reading for yourself, in the classroom, using either Tarot cards (and the Celtic Cross spread) or tasseomancy. Then write your interpretation of the reading down, being as descriptive as possible. Supplies are provided for either process, besides your texts.

ooc: have fun with this, and send the written portions to me using the same process as homeworks, no later than April 2nd.

Text Cut: Celtic Cross spread

Kyle took out her quill, and a piece of parchment and marked down what she needed for the final exam. "Hello Professor Bishop" she smiled as she walked in and took a seat.

Ah! Divination. And they had both theoretical and practical parts. Good. He only felt like doing ONE Scavenger hunt. He couldn't do more than that, Lafay had left him exhausted, just like Melanie during practices.

"Hello, Professor," he greeted Bishop, a feeling of relief overwhelmed him, though, since he was reminded of the last time he'd been at a Divination Final and the terrible news he'd received that day. But today was completely different.

So, the boy took a seat and picked up his quill and parchment and read the questions FIRST, all of them, to get a good look at what he'll be needing to answer.

Mmmmhmmm, he nodded and then began writing. It surprised him how little he wrote considering that he could extent himself while explaining each and every single question in person, but, yeah, maybe Bishop wouldn't mind all those three pages of parchment, no?

His written part was up, and now he was asked to choose between Tasseomancy or Tarot. One the usual day Treyen would've picked up the cards, because he felt more at ease with them, but this was a FINAL, easy didn't belong here.

So, he took a teapot and a cup. Tasseomancy it is.

As he poured the tea, he started to think about what question to ask since the last time he'd done a general reading. This one shouldn't be general, there should be some specifics to take into account. So, why not ask what his summer will be like? Or what he'll learn from it? Or how will it all end? Yes? Well, the tea was poured into the cup, and all he needed to do was settle on...WHO cared about the summer? He should be MORE specific, because he suddenly had an idea.

Will he find out something that will make him change his way of thinking?

THAT was the perfect question. Because last summer he...found out stuff, and will he going through something similar this one too?

He thought of it as he drank the tea, making sure that there was the right amount left while he circled the remainder and then placed the cup down. All this time he'd been focused, and now it was time to lift the cup, turn it, and then glimpse inside it.

THE best part of Divination. Interpretations.

Eyes on the cup. The first thing he noticed near the rim was...

Quote:
AXE - you have the power to overcome difficulties.
Aaaaaand, they weren't starting very good with this.

Quote:
FEATHER - need for concentration.
Well, THAT looked like a feather, alright? Like one of those peacock feathers Gilderoy loved so much.

Quote:
ROSE - new romance; deepening of love.
After almost approaching the base he noticed something that made him freeze. His focus was lost now, because...what was he supposed to do WITH this symbol?!

What a stupid flower, the rose was.

Quote:
SCISSORS - it may be time to remove yourself from a situation or relationship.
That was fairly obvious. Everyone had to remove themselves from their previous situation in order to return to Hogwarts, no?

But that's where he was wrong, because the 'Rose' had caused him to lose the focus on the question. Good thing he'd written it down, as well as the previous symbols.

The boy breathed and considered the interpretation one more time before he started to write it.

Once he was done, he sort of rearranged and cleaned his cup and all, and then gave Bishop the parchment (or parchments, because he'd extended himself too much) and, "Have a great summer." Smile.

Super Slytherin Buddy || ⅓ She-Snake Trio || 'I taste like chocolate and potatoes'

Destiny was totally stressing. Sure, the weight of not having to do OWL's was off her shoulders, but very busy and important Lord Borr forgot to cancel end of term finals! If he was going to cancel OWL's and NEWT's, he should have canceled everything else as well..including classes. Pfft, who needs them?

Walking into the classroom, looking quite the sight with border-line crazy hair, Destiny took a glance around the room before spotting the Professor. "Hello." she mumbled, moving further into the classroom and taking the first empty seat she found. Spotting the parchment, she flipped it over before picking up the quill and writing her name very BIG at the top. Professor Bishop was going to know it was her parchment and not anyone else's. Satisfied that her name was big enough, she started answering the questions.

WAH!

Her head hurt already.

Finally, after what seemed like HOURS of LABOR, Destiny finished the last question and not bothering to re-read her answers, she flipped the parchment back over and placed the quill down. The hard part was now over! But it still left the practical part and well, that seemed easy. Especially since they had done it in class before.

Tasseomancy. That was what she was going to do. After getting that STUPID heart in class, she was going to try again. She didn't know what she would do if she got it again..

Pushing out of her seat, she made her way over to the supplies, picking up the things that was needed. Pffft, Bishop should have provided baskets to carry the stuff. Making her way back to her seat, she threw herself in it and wasted no time setting up. She wanted to hurry and finish so she could sleeeeep. Once set up, she held her nose and downed the very nasty tea, remembering to leave some at the bottom.

The bottom tea was probably the grossest anyway.

Destiny then gave the left over contents a few swirls, flipping it over the saucer and waited. While waiting, she thought of the question she wanted to ask. It was hard to think of just one, but finally, she found a..good one. Not perfect, just good.

Will the potatoes be better at the end-of-term feast than the start-of-term feast?

It was a question she had been thinking about ever since she found a hair in her bowl and she needed to know what to eat during. Hopefully her reading will tell her just that.

Flipping the cup back over, Destiny leaned in close, starting at the brim and working her way down. It took some flipping and turning, but finally the symbol came in clear.

Quote:
AIRCRAFT - journey; travel.
Well, that wasn't so bad. It could mean that she needed to go to another house table to steal their potatoes. Wouldn't be the first time she did it. So far, so good!

Moving downward and with a few more turns of the cup, the second symbol was spotted. Or at least, it looked like a symbol. Meh.

Quote:
DROPS - tears or sadness.
OH NO! Tears of sadness!? That wasn't good. What if she went over to another table and ALL the potatoes were bad!? She needed to find another symbol to turn that bad one around. Merlin! Moving in even closer to the cup, she spotted the next symbol and that had to be a good one, right? RIGHT!?

Quote:
SUN - a new beginning.
Stare.

What did that have to do with potatoes? Destiny didn't know, so she moved her eyes around the cup once more. And as soon as the symbol was spotted, she regretted looking for more.

Quote:
HEART - love, friendship, romance.
GAH!

Not bothering to interpret that one, she quickly cleaned up her desk, putting all the supplies back where she found them and handed in her parchment. "Bye, Professor! Have a nice summer!"

Destiny needed chocolate now.

As Rex stared at the teacup in front of him, he struggled to think of a question which he would like to have answered. Clearly, there was one thing on mind more than any other, and Rex quickly jotted it down -

Once Renee and I get married after our graduation, will our wedding last?

Hesitantly, Rex began to focus his attention on the teacup, searching for symbols to give him some guidance in the matter. The very first thing he saw was The Lion.

Rex looked at the handle of the cup. Was that really a Loaf of Bread etched on there? Why had he never noticed it before?

Staring directly into the cup, Rex noticed a Diamond at the very center. Most intriguing. That did seem like a good sign for a successful wedding, though.

Rex uncovered another as he searched up and down the cup from rim to base, and it was Jewels. Surely the answer to his question was here somewhere.

As Rex thought, the answer came to him. "Bye, professor," he said. "Thanks for the fun lessons."

Nika entered the classroom and gave her professor a big smile. Nika was very nervous. The finals just had an effect on her that she couldn't explain. Nika seemed to do a lot better with pressure, but the nerves were an awful consequence to pay for it. She looked around the room and noticed for the first time the arrangement of the desks. Nika made her way towards a desk smack dab in the middle of the classroom. Upon taking a seat she noticed the parchment and a quill. Nika read the parchment at least twice just to make sure she understood everything.

The firstie looked at the bottom where it read "Practical". She bit her lip and looked towards professor Bishop again. Hopefully she wouldn't mind if the Gryffindor started with the practical portion. Nika was better with the "doing" in divination. The questions just throw her off. Nika weighed her two options carefully. Tarot Cards oooor Tasseomancy. She decided on Tasseomancy because she done that one more recently so it would be easier to remember the procedures. Nika walked to the shelves and chose a teapot and a plain white cup to use. She had to make two trips in order to get them because she didn't want to brake anything during her final.

She did a quick run down of the procedure in her head before doing anything. She poured some tea inside the cup and waited for it to cool down a bit. She blew on it to help make the process go by faster. She looked into her cup and then took a few sips. When the tea was almost done she swirled the bit that was left around the cup. She then turned it upside down over a saucer and waited for it to drain. Nika was silently praying that she was doing this correctly and that she wouldn't mess up.

Nika looked over her shoulder at her professor with a nervous look on her face. She was hoping for a head nod or some sort of indication that she was doing alright. Nika turned around after a few seconds realizing that Professor Bishop probably wouldn't be allowed to say anything anyways. This is a final. Not regular class. Nika flipped over the cup and looked inside for the symbols. She started from the top of the cup and went around in a spiral.

The first symbol that Nika recognized was the apple. She glanced over at her list and read that the apple meant life; creative or artistic achievement; abundance. Nika smiled hoping that she knew what that meant. She looked into the cup some more and recognized another symbol, the crown. This meant honor and recognition for your talents. Nika put two and two together and raised an eyebrow. What did this mean? She searched the cup once more and saw another symbol and this time it's a star. The star meant success and recognition.

"Well Creative and artistic achievement.... Well I want to learn how to play the guitar so maybe I will learn how to do that! And then I will get recognized for it. Nika nodded her head slowly. She tried to decipher what she just said. Did that make any sense? "Well it doesn't have to be for guitar even... Just a creative or artistic thing. Maybe I will actually get somewhere with my singing and song writing!!" Nika jumped up and let out a squeal. She is a musical girl and so artistic and creative could have to do with many things in her life. "Or maybe it's talking about my piano playing! I've only been playing for two years, but maybe soon I will achieve more skill in it!"

The young girl started to scribble down her interpretation of the reading. After she was finished writing Nika took her parchment and double checked it to make sure that it was what she wanted. Making a few minor adjustments here and there she was finally satisfied with her work. Done.

SPOILER!!: The interpretation
I love the fine arts and being creative with them! I like to write songs, sing, and play piano. Soon I would like to learn how to play the guitar too! When I did my reading in my cup I saw three symbols that all interconnected. The first symbol I saw was an Apple which means some sort of creative and artistic achievement. The apple has a lot to do with my love for the arts because they are creative. The second symbol I saw was the crown which meant honor and recognition for my talents. My talents happen to be song writing, singing, and the piano! Which could mean that I will get recognized for one or more of them. The last symbol I recognized was the star which means success and recognition. After putting all of the symbols and their meanings together I have come up with a conclusion about my future. I will achieve in my talents for the arts and I will then be recognized for it. Maybe I will even win an award or something professor!

Nika put her piece of parchment to the side and started working on the questions. When everything was done she hopped out of her seat and walked towards Professor Bishop. [B]"Thank you so much for everything this term! I really enjoyed your class the most! But don't tell the other professors that. Nika giggled and then handed her work to her favorite professor with a smile.

She considered which to do tea or tarot and because she'd understood tarot more she went with that. She was excited, and ready to get this over with. She grabbed the tarot cards off the table cut the deck the smell of the dust on the cards hitting her nose. And quickly began to get the deck fully ready splitting it into three piles and letting her energy draw her to which one to go on the bottom, which on the top and which in the middle of course. She then took the ten cards from the top of the deck and placed them without flipping them or changing their directions out in the form of the Celtic cross.

Jotting down some notes on what cards were in what positions she sighed.

Quote:

7. yourself, in relation to the question= The Star (reversed)
8. family/friends= Queen of Swords (reversed)

10. probable outcome= Three of Wands (reversed)
Then looking down at the meaning book in her hand she slowly began to decipher it. The high priestess was a pure, exalted and gracious presence - Kyle nearly laughed she wasn't always gracefull sometimes far from. She did like the idea of having foresight into spiritual and arcane matters that was intriguing.

Then onto the next card, she looked at the reversed meaning of the shallow overindulgence followed by depletion - this didn't look good when the question pertained to her getting a job after Hogwarts. She swallowed and kept reading onto the next card, she read up on the knight of pentacles. It meant being slow to action because it was reversed. Then the next card the Queen of Cups meant tranquility - so maybe she'd get a job then it would get slow then it would quicken to a reasonable pace. She considered this hopefully it was something like that and not something more dire.

The two of wands, she looked at the meanings, back at the card, than at the meanings again. Developing a plan of action she thought as she reduced the meaning to simpler terms. Then she had to look at the four of wands - reversed of course squandering and a hard one victory might be good, she considered biting her lip. Then the next one, the star was reversed - perfect. Lost hope, doubt, and failure. She grumbled and kept working on it. The queen of swords she thought smirking. Reversed of course someone who savages friends and foe with sarcasm...she raised an eyebrow was she sarcastic? Eh.

Then the nine of swords, looking down she skimmed over the meaning. Guilt, mistrust and doubt - so no, no job so far. The Emperor she looked at the meaning world authority and power...but power didn't always mean jobs she considered and sighed. Finally, the last card was the three of wands - virtuous - pride and arrogance convincing oneself that the ends ultimately justify the means.

Interpretation: Yes you will get a job but you might have to work at getting into the desired career that you want. Don't just stop at Hogwarts keep going afterwards and strive for more.

Kurumi entered the classroom wondering what sort of task they were going to have to perform for their Divination final. “Good day, Professor Bishop,”she smiled. She approached her desk and found a quill and parchment along with a set of questions to be answered for the written portion of the final exam. The questions were simple enough, but she did have to think hard on a few of them.

Setting her quill down and turning in her parchment, Kurumi moved onto the next part, the practical portion. The part that was always a little more difficult simply because there was no obvious answer and so many different ways to interpret each reading. It was mostly because of this that Kurumi preferred Arithmancy to Divination. More concrete answers and a means to finding that answer.

Taking a deck of tarot cards, Kurumi shuffled them and then spread them out on the table. She supposed she was supposed to come up with a question for this, but her whole life was one giant question at the moment and she had no idea what to ask seeing as nothing seemed to make sense. No matter, time to pick some cards and put them in the proper formation.

Selecting a card from the spread, Kurumi plucked it and placed it in the number one position. “Judgement,” she whispered as she set it down on the table. Well, that was an interesting card considering the circumstances.

Kurumi selected another card and put it in the second position. “Strength,” she said gazing at the picture of a maiden and a lion. This was another interesting and revealing card, she supposed. She was going to have to think hard about what this meant.

Putting her thoughts about the first two cards aside for the moment, Kurumi turned over a third card and set it on the table. “The Moon,” she read as the frown on her face grew more. She knew what this meant in terms of what she was asking…and it made the end of the term even more depressing.

Now grabbing a forth card, Kurumi hurried and turned it over. “The Hierophant,” she read closing her eyes for a moment. Taking in a deep breath, Kurumi flipped over the next card, the one that represented past events and influences already having a hunch as to what would makes its appearance. “The Chariot.”

Only a few more cards to go, but Kurumi was already beginning to put the picture together as to what her interpretation would be.

The World,” she said as she flipped over the card representing her future. At least this one was cheery. She knew that she shouldn’t let go of hope. It is what kept everything together. “The Wheel of Fortune,” she said as she flipped over the next and placed it in the fifth position.

Her hands shook a bit as she turned over the next one, the one in regards to her family, but a smiled appeared on her face with what she saw. “The Sun.” Now that was rather optimistic! The high she had from this card was quickly muffled by the confusion brought about by the next card. “The Lovers.” That card brought about many interpretations to what she was concerned with.

Now, flipping over the final card, a small gasp escaped Kurumi’s lips. “The High Priestess.

Well, this certainly gave her a lot to think about. Once again tickling her nose with her quill, Kurumi began to write down her interpretation, crossing out sentences and paragraphs here and there when she found that she had perhaps misinterpreted and it made for a very messy piece of parchment. She probably should rewrite it when she was done, which she did.

Now having finished her exam, Kurumi rolled up her parchment and handed it into Professor Bishop. “Thank you for everything this term,” she smiled hoping that her eyes told of more thanks than her words did.

Before Sierra had even walked into the classroom, she'd already fixed a slight frown on her face. It wasn't that she was terrible at Divination, but rather--okay, confession time. She wasn't great at this at all. As a matter of fact, she wondered if she should even continue with the subject next term. If it got more difficult as time went on, she'd be a complete and total failure by the time she reached her fourth year.

...and, well, yeah--admitting failure or even showcasing it all just wasn't her cup of tea. Pardon the pun, because apparently she was about to have to do another tea leaf reading for her final exam. Excellent. She actually remembered how to do this, since it'd been the topic of the last Divination lesson and all. It was pretty much fresh on her mind.

...and the best part was, as soon as was done with this exam, she'd be completely done with all her exams for the school year. She made a mental promise to herself to spend the next few days between now and the feast doing nothing but lying around in the common room or down at the lake. She was exhausted! She plopped herself down into an unoccupied desk and began work on the theoretical part of the exam. Merlin's pants! She was only one question into the exam, and she was already having trouble. She decided to skip that one and return to it later. She worked quietly, occasionally glancing up with a look of thought (or maybe confusion) on her face. She never did figure out the answer to number one, but she scribbled down something that looked good to her and then turned in her exam.

With the long and tiring part of the exam out of the way, all that was left now was the actual tea leaf reading. Sierra edged out of her desk and sauntered over to the bookshelves, retrieving the items she'd need for the practical. Returning back to her seat, she began to pour a cup of tea. She was still rather mehhh about tea, but because she was actually in a pretty good mood today, she didn't complain--not even a mental complain, which was really good for her.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Destiny Shepard hold her nose, so she decided to do the same, as well. She tilted the cup toward her mouth and drank, leaving just the right amount at the very bottom. She swirled the remains around and around, and then she turned the cup upside down, emptying the contents onto a saucer. She sighed nervously as a very personal question came to mind--"How will the summer break be now that it's just Dad and I?"

She flipped her cup back over and then peered inside. What did the rim show?

Quote:
CHAIR - a guest or new addition to the family.
The Chair?! Again?! She'd gotten the same exact image in the cup of tea she'd had during class. Now she was really starting to worry. Who was coming into their family? Emily Browne had suggested that either her mother or father had a new significant other. She could be right, but then again, the divorce had just been finalized. Could one of them have moved on that quickly? It was possible, she guessed. Then there was the thought of Anna, her older sister, having a third child (or a third and fourth if the whole twin pattern kept up). Finally, it could just mean that maybe Alex, her twin brother, would pay her a visit this summer. It was, after all, their first summer apart.

Turning the cup, she came upon another image.

Quote:
THIMBLE - focus on fostering your home life.
Oh, well now this one made perfect sense! In the course of one school year, Sierra's parents had decided to abruptly end their twenty-something year long marriage. Or, actually, her father, from what she'd been told, had ended it. Sierra and Alex had been left to decide which parent they wanted to live with, resulting in Sierra moving in with their father and Alex staying with their mother. Fostering a home life likely meant that Sierra (and her father, too) would probably spend the summer setting up a new home and learning how to live without Sierra's mother and Alex. It would definitely be an adjustment, but Sierra knew that as long as she had her father with her, she'd be just fine.

With a small smile on her face, she turned the cup some more, looking further into it and spotting a third image.

Quote:
KITE - your wish will be granted.
...really?!

"Merlin's pants!" she wanted to yell. "Hufflepuff house is going down!"

She did a half-smirk, half-laugh as she continued to stare into her cup. She knew Hufflepuff house wasn't really going down, and that wasn't really her wish, but it was a funny sudden thought that had come to her mind. What had she been wishing for, though? Simply put--a new kitten. She wanted a black cat just like all witches are meant to have. Not so simply put--she just wished that she and father, and whoever else 'The Chair' was trying to tell her was coming into their lives, would just have a happy and successful life. She trusted her father, and she knew splitting their family up had been a big decision he'd had to make, so she just wanted nothing but the best to come from it. Apparently, according to the kite, the best would come.

...then finally, she reached the bottom of the cup.

Quote:
RAINBOW - your wish will come true; similar to an arch, it links represents the path between today and your destiny.
Oh, ...wow.

If ever there was a moment when a sarcastic, overly-ambitious twelve-year-old Slytherin girl felt like crying tears of happiness, it was right now. She didn't, though--of course. She did smile even wider, though. Was everything going to work out for her for sure? She didn't know. This was Divination, and she usually took all her readings with a grain of salt. Just knowing that she'd at least received a good sign from the tea leaves, though, gave her a reason not to be overly concerned. Again, she trusted her father, and she knew he'd never get her (or himself) into a situation that was too difficult for them to deal with.

She quickly cleaned up her materials, grabbed her belongings, and then pushed herself away from her desk. "Bye, Professor Bishop," she said, giving the woman a polite nod.

This was her last final she was taking, and she just wanted to be over with it. Sure, it was Divination, which meant it was one of the hardest subjects for her to get through, but it was the last one! The subject of Divination wasn't all that hard, it was just the keeping awake part that she seemed to have trouble with. Even with just finishing up the written part of the final, Evelyn could already feel herself nodding off somewhat.

Blinking for a moment, staring at her finished parchment, Evelyn rubbed her hazel eyes and slouched in her seat for a moment before getting up and walking over to grab her own...card deck? Or should do Tasseomancy?

Standing in the middle of the room pretty much, the Slytherin girl glanced between the two, deciding which would have been better. She'd more than likely fall asleep doing Tasseomancy, but that celtic cross spread...she was not a fan of it. Drinking tea was so much more soothing and calming as well though. Good Merlin, why was she even thinking over this?

Pouring herself a cup of warm tea, she moved back over to her desk and sat down, slouching in her seat once more, crossing one leg over the other. Blowing on the tea, she took a small sip for a moment before sitting there, thinking of the question she had in mind when she was pouring the actual tea: How was this summer going to turn out?

After a few minutes of feeling herself nod off to dreamland, the Slytherin girl sat up straight, noticing the tea was practically gone from the cup except a small bit. Good. Maybe she could get through this without sleeping then.

Flipping the cup over on her saucer, she waited a few moments before flipping it back over, staring at the contents on the inside. Hmm, yes, it looked just as she suspected it would. Like a bunch of tea leaves. Though, vowing that she would actually try on this final and not write down there were a bunch of lines everywhere, Evelyn peered at the rim of the cup, trying to figure out what there was that could actually be a symbol of some sort.

Hmm, it took her a few tries, but finally, she just considered that line, tea leaf clump thing right there to be...a mountain. A mountain meant a goal of some sort. Though, it was difficult? A difficult goal, but it was doable. So, her summer was going to be difficult, but she'd get through it? Now that uplifted her spirits somewhat about it all. She had been extremely nervous about it, but this cup...it was telling her it'd be alright. Now she was starting to understand why Josh enjoyed the subject so much.

Turning the cup just a bit more, her gaze trailed down the sides and towards the bottom, searching for anything else that may look like a picture. flames would have been pretty awesome to see, but after reading that parchment list finally, she figured she could do without the flames for a little bit. Yet, this part, it looked like...a cup? No. If she looked at it from the other way...it looked like...a bird. No! It was a fish. Maybe?

Scowling, she leaned a little closer to the cup to inspect it. Yea, that was definitely a fish. A fish meant something about a teacher, and sharing of knowledge. So, she was going to be meeting a teacher? What?

Raising a brow, Evelyn glanced at her parchment before writing down her interpretation of her tea leaf reading, and somehow figuring out an interpretation for the fish. Two images were good enough. A fish? Just...really? Whyyyy?

But that didn't matter! She was done! Done with it all. She can now go and lay by the lake...and fall asleep. Or something. It didn't matter, because she had free time now. Free time to do anything! Standing up, Evelyn cleaned up her desk and brought her parchment up to the front, handing it to the Professor. More importantly...the girl didn't fall asleep. That...was an accomplishment. "Goodbye Professor Bishop. Hope your summer will be pleasant."

Teehee, hers surely will be! According to the tea leaves anyhow.
