Because the Headmaster has no use for a second office, he has re-purposed this room for an entirely different use. The room is larger than it should be; the fact that Tate reduced a wall into an adjoining room is obvious by the fact that his ‘office’ has two doors along the same long wall. Rather than leaving an empty office or reinventing the standard dueling area, the room now serves as a training facility for those with an interest in Defense and Defense related careers: Aurors, Hit Wizards, and the International Task Force (among others).

The two windows in the room face out over an inner courtyard and let in tree-filtered light throughout the day. Beside one such window, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves have been stuffed full of countless Defense texts. The titles range from ancient tomes in spidery indecipherable scripts to glossy hardcovers featuring some of the premiere Defensive authors of the day. The long table is conducive for transcribing notes from the various books, but there are also a few deep chairs pushed together for general reading or quiet conversation. There is a sign posted on the bookshelf.

Along the opposite wall, leading from the far door halfway to the window, Tate has set up various pieces of exercise equipment, intending for those interested in pursuing a Defensive career to develop themselves physically as well as mentally. A punching bag is suspended from the ceiling in the corner, sitting beside a stand of free weights and other odds and ends, mats and exercise balls and the like. Stretching along the remainder of the space to the window is an enormous climbing wall, complete with hand and foot holds all the way up to the ceiling. There are no ropes, but the floor is generously cushioned with a charm.

Between the two windows sit a series of padded dummies, perfect for any dueling practice needed for class or just to be used in the process of learning new spells. Drag one or two out and practice. Either of the windows onto the courtyard may be opened and, weather permitting, training can extend into this open space. Try not to kill and trees or squirrels in the process.

Jay looked at one of the books, which he looked at, it showed him a few spells which seemed useful..."Legillimens... Thats nasty, why would anyone want to look at anyones thoughts," he said looking at it then noticing all the complicated stuff, "This is more like it, petrificus totalus..." he said, starting to correctly hold his wand, and flicking it, practicing on the dummies.

Pamphylia walked into the room. She wasn't doing much here, she didn't really know any spells, but she was just wondering, and ended up here. She saw a boy practicing. When he looked her way, she nodded in hello, and walked over to the window.

DADA... of all subjects why she was coming to this one no one knew... not even Faelwen herself... well... she knew it wouldn't hurt to know about defense but the point of coming to a class to learn kind of evaded her, students with magical parents could just ask their parents about it... oh well... she decided to just stand there waiting for the teacher... or professor... that was the politically correct term was it not?

Sophia pulled out her wand to practice the one spell she knew. "Petrificus Totalus!" she yelled to the test dummy. The dummy froze just how she had wanted it to. "Yay!" she said, happily. she had jsut done her first spell.

Once again, he wasn't entirely sure why he had chosen to come here but at least, in comparison to his first year at Hogwarts, he knew where here was. Pausing in the doorway, Sabel let his eyes drift about the room, admiration stirring within at the changes Tate had made to the space. The man had a practical sense of business, good for teaching.

Letting out a small sigh, he made his way over to the punching bags, giving them a once over with a light frown. He had never been one for violence or for fighting, unless of course the occasion had valid and moral reason for it, so he was slightly surprised to find himself giving the bean-filled-bag a light jab. And then another. Then another. Before he was quite sure of what he was doing, he was throwing his whole body into attacking the bag, trying to throw his energy into focus and form. Focus away from the anger that had built up inside, away from the pain he was so desperately trying to quell. If he could distract himself in such things, in studies, perhaps he could forget, and the year would be over fast.

If this would have been last year, Kellen would have taken one look inside the Defense Training Room and gone on his merry way, content to let other, more risk-taking students use the facility. However, this was a new year, and his previous dislike of all things Defense had been tempered somewhat by the fact he hadn't flunked his DADA OWL. In fact, he'd scored pretty highly on it. Maybe the examiners were giving him a sign that he should give this area of magic another chance.

Kellen stepped into the room, looking around at the few students already here. He spotted a familiar face in the area with the punching bags, and started to make his way over to say hello, when his eyes were caught by the climbing wall. Caught and held. His gaze flicked to the top of the wall, back down, up again, and before he could give himself much more time to think about it he took a jogging start at the wall and hopped onto it, grabbing at the handholds and finding ones for his feet.

In the words of a famous mountaineer when asked why he wanted to climb Everest: because it was there. This wasn't Everest, but it was getting climbed nonetheless.

Luna wanted to start straight away.She wasn't always that good at Defence against the Dark Arts. But she was willing to try. She grabbed a book from the shelf and started to look for a spell to practise on. She finally came across a page with a useful looking spell. Grabbing her 11.3 inch wand in her hands and facing towards the dummy she got ready. "Stupefy!" she said flicking her wand correctly. Since the dummy couldn't move she wasn't sure if it worked but she tried again just in case. "Stupefy!!" Luna said as she flicked her wand. The spell hit the dummy with great force. "Now if that doesn't stun someone I don't know what does," Luna whispered to herself.

Neptune Bott had been being VERY VERY VERY sneaky!

GIGGLE.

Her blond curls swung around the door to ... whatever this place was. It so didn't matter. What DID matter was that she had been hot on Kellen "Kellybear" Stern's trail for a ways and he hadn't noticed ONCE. He'd notice now surely.

GIGGLEGIGGLE.

Her nose wrinkled at the odd room. She had one sort of like it at home, but it wasn't a room she frequented. It smelled funny, and this one sort of did, too. Like boys? Or something.

"KeeeeeeellllyBeeeeeeeeear," Neptune sang. "Yooo hoooooooooo!" GIGGLE. She twirled a curl around one finger, while the other hand was busy wiggling her fingers in his direction. She briefly pondered what he was DOING... Climbing a wall? Hmmm...

He'd been in the middle of lifting his foot to put it on a higher stone when he heard... that. The foothold was missed, and Kellen's hands tightening on their respective grips was pretty much the only thing that prevented a fall.

Once he was securely holding the wall again, he turned and looked over his shoulder, "Neptune! What...? Why would you...? Of all the things to shout..." Mutter, mutter.

If that nickname caught, he swore he would descend into a mood so foul it would give Moaning Myrtle and the Bloody Baron a run for their money.

"Well what should I say? Maybe I'll just turn around and LEAVE, Kellen Stern!" Neptune's hand flew to her hips, where her little fists bounced off the bones there. "I came all the way down here to SEE you, you know."

Neptune's eyes traveled over to where Sabel was... Hitting a bag? REALLY what was this room? Boy room?

That had potential,right? Giggle. BOY room + Neptune. GIIIIIIGGLE!

"I missed you too!" Kellen retorted, pushing off the wall and falling the half-dozen feet to the cushioning charms on the floor. Once he'd brushed off his hands, he walked over to her and mirrored her stance, hands on hips.

Really, he should have gone looking for Neptune before now, all things considered. He'd even meant to talk to her in Diagon Alley, but that hadn't happened. Bad form, Kellen, "Sorry. I'm sorry, just... really, could you not call me that when there are people all over the place?"

Neptune looked away to hide her grin. Of course he had missed her. She clasped her hands in front of her and twisted back and forth. It was her shy-look, that was really anything but.

"You want it to be a secret name? For just when we're alone?" Just to be clear, you know.

Neptune left him where he was and skipped over to where he had been just a moment ago. He'd FALLEN and not got hurt, and that was terribly interesting. And she kind of liked Kellen Stern following her. "What sort of place is this?" Neptune put one pinky finger tippy on the wall. Hmmmmm.

Really, he didn't want it to be a name at all, but he'd already told her that and quite apparently it hadn't registered. "Sure. Yes. A secret name."

And... now she was going right back to where he'd just come from. With a good-natured sigh, Kellen shook his head and followed after her, "It's a training room for people who want to get better at Defense Against the Dark Arts. Some people," he pointed out Sabel, "take it a little more hardcore than others. I just saw this climbing wall here and decided to test it out."

As he lowered his hand, his fingers closed around the end of one of her curls and he pulled on it gently. "So," he let it go, and watched as it bounced back into place, "how was your summer? And trip here?"

Neptune cast a glance to where his fingers were in her curls. Kellybear was FLIRTING in the Defense Room, as he'd called it. GIIIIIIGGLE.

"You probably should take it serious. Heroes should be up to par with defense and all, you know." Did he know? Neptune was confident he did now.

"Climb this wall with me," she bossed, "and I'll tell you about my summer and my trip. And how you weren't featured in either." Neptune reached up as HIGH as she could and grasped the little handle, then lifted a knee to get a foot up.

"I'm working on it," he told her honestly. "I've just never been one for dueling. That's all." That wasn't all, not really, but it was true that the dark cloud of being a sub-par duelist had tainted the rest of the subject for him.

"You're going to... climb in your school uniform?" Sure, Kellen was in his uniform, minus the cloak, cardigan and tie, but she was... skirts weren't... man. This was going to be interesting.

"Okay, instead of doing that," he took her hand from the high-up handle and set it on a lower one, "always pick a handhold that you can reach easily. That way if one of your feet slips, you won't lose your grip and fall. Same goes for your footholds."

Neptune threw a look over her shoulder. Was there some sort of special climbing uniform? Did he know not like what she had on? TOUGH. She was in her slightly altered school skirt, tights, and heels. She wasn't changing for ANY reason.

But that look melted into something much softer when he lowered her hand so she'd be able to climb better. "Awwww.... Kellybear. Always my hero." GIGGLE. She bounced once, then stepped up so she was off the ground. It put her around Kellen's height actually.

"I am going to beat you to the top, you know." Fact. "Mother would hate me climbing this." So Neptune started looking for the next steppy.

We are used to your looks, Neptune Bott. That was the look Kellen sent back at her, but then he blinked, because she changed looks and he wasn't ready for it. He also wasn't ready for her to be the same height as him. Neptune Bott was itty bitty, that was just how things were.

"You can try," Kellen challenged with a grin, sidestepping her and putting his foot on the first foothold to the top. He had no intent to climb the wall competitively, but he wasn't going to stay a few feet behind her either.

"Try?" Neptune tried to kick him. "I will. Then you'll owe me a prize. I want flowers." None of this surprise me with Kellen. He wasn't always tuned into girl things.

One time he sent her a rock. Sure, Neptune LOVED the rock more than any other rock in the whole wide world. But. Really. Oh KellyBear.

She swatted at him before hurrying up to the next step. "I came with Jim," Neptune began her promised story about her trip, "Mother and his mother insisted and all. So I rode with him." And that's why she didn't get to see him. "Did you ride with Sabel?"

"Hand-picked or magicked up?" Kellen leaned his body away from her kick with a grin. He could whip her up a bouquet of exotic, pretty flowers, or he could head outdoors for a walk and see what fall flowers mother nature had to offer.

Jim. He'd heard that name a few times now, and asked, "He's the one you were being home-schooled with, right? And now he's at Hogwarts?" There was something about her statement of her mother and Jim's mother that niggled at the back of his mind, but he ignored it, "I didn't, actually. I slept most of the way here. My sisters woke me up at three that morning and pestered me until I got on the train."

HMmmmm.

He probably couldn't mess up that part, choosing which flower, right? "Surprise me. Surprise me when I beat you to the top. You should just give up now and go figure out what bouquet you're getting me. There's NO way you'll beat me." Neptune tried to kick him again. GIGGLE. She reached too high and almost fell... but no worries. Neptune Bott had poise and balance and had clinging skillz like no other.

"Uhhm. Yes, Jim. Jimmy. James. I'm not sure which I told you, but he'll answer to any of those. We call it tutoring instead of homeschooling. I call it prison, 'cept when we got to his house." Truth! Merlin, Neptune was NEVER going home again EVER. EVERRRRRR.

"I don't know how you could SLEEP on the train. I find it FAR too exciting." Neptune slowed the higher she got.

"You don't exactly climb very fai--" Kellen was in the middle of commenting on her dirty tactics when she almost fell, and shot a hand out just in case. But... no, she was fine, and he felt like an idiot because there were cushioning charms for that exact reason.

"Tutoring, yes. Got it." He kept climbing, but was now staying just that little extra bit behind her. He wouldn't mind making a bouquet, now that he thought about it. And if his hand-picked one failed, he always had magic as a backup.

"I could sleep because I was exhausted, and because I couldn't find anyone I knew." Truth. Kellen's friends had been quite elusive on that trip.

"I don't climb very what? Clumsily? Are you SO impressed with my climbing? You didn't think I could do it, did you?" Neptune peered down at him, her curls obstructing her view. She tried to blow them out of the way, but really there wasn't time to dally.

Must beat Stern.

Neptune hadn't missed the arm going out to catch her, either. In fact, it sped up her climbing. How romantic would it be to be caught by Kellen? SWOOON-worty romantic!!!

"I don't get the point of this climbing thing. If a real bad person was after me, I'd be too scared to climb a wall, I think."

"Very impressed," Kellen informed her. "I didn't think a skirt would make it very easy. Then again..." He considered this, "You're used to skirts. I suppose they don't bother you at all."

Why... was she suddenly climbing faster? He raised an eyebrow and sped up as well, his head drawing level with her shoulder.

"People climb for fun, Neptune. Usually when they reach the top of stuff they can look down and think 'I climbed that'. Besides," he poked her elbow, "adrenaline can do wonders. If your muscles know how to do it, they'll do it whether your brain tells them to or not."

Really. Need she say anymore? Skirts.... Pffff. Sometimes he was SUCH a boy and knew so little.

She GASPED loudly when Kellen NEARLY caught up! EEEEEP!!!!! She pressed her body into the wall to keep her safely stuck to it, then reached out to SWAT at him. What was he DOING?! "It's totally unfair, you know," she used her TIPPY toes to try and reach a grippy thing waaaay out of her reach to get a lead on Kellen. "Your legs are WAY too long."

Neptune JUST barely managed to get her fingers around the next peg and she PUUULLED herself up. She was going to out of breath and sweaty after this. Ew. It was too late to stop now though, "So you think the Headmaster put this here for us to have fun on? Like a playground. A playroom. HE didn't put a tea set out though!" Someone's logic somewhere was flawed.

Neptune was betting on it being the Headmaster's.
