Now that the tomatoes were crushed in the cauldron it was time to light the fire. "Incendio." she said pointing her wand under the cauldron. She started stirring the tomatoes so they wouldn't burn while waiting for the mixture to come to a boil.
Stirring and stirring and stirring...
Her arm started to get tired of all the stirring so she decided to have the spoon do the work for her. "Locomotor Spoon!" she said as she pointed her wand at the spoon and rotated it in the direction she wanted the spoon to turn, which was to the right.
Now that she didn't have to do the stirring herself she was able to watch the other students, like Carter, who seemed to be having fun.
Once her tomatoes were boiling she reduced the heat to a simmer letting it cook until the tomoatoes were softened.
She went back to people watching while she waited for the right time to add the sugar.

Zane peeled his pears and cut them up, starting a fire so he could finally cook his pears down. He loved the oddly shaped green fruit, and he thought he would like the jam. He began cooking the pears, and added his sugar, 3 1/2 cups because he didn't want the jam to be overly sweet, and honestly, he liked his a little on the tart side for certain things. He used a cutting charm to cut down his wheat while his jam was done. "That looks good" he said, ladling it into a jar. He turned extinguished the fire and looked at Alex, "Can you taste this? I'm not a great cook" he said, thinking back to potions. He didn't want to go through the hassle of canning it and it be worthless.

Alex looked at Zane raising her eyebrow, "Pear Jam huh?" Alex asked slightly amused but took a clean and able to use spoon and took a very small amount to taste, she couldn't reject her boyfriend after all. Alex hesistantly tasted it and thought. "Hmm.. A little tart but I think that's what you want.. right?" Alex asked looking at him smiling.
With the sugar all gone, Patroclus turned the noble on his burner and increased the heat of his cauldron, and watched as the flame flared up. "Oh pretty," he muttered to himself.
Peering over the top of his cauldron, Patroclus looked on as his rotating ladle continually moved the jam around and around, as it slowly thicken. The smell was intoxicating, however he couldn't help but wonder what 'RockMelonJam' would taste like......
The ladle's ease began to slow, and Patroclus knew the jam was just about done, "Finite" taking the now-motionless ladle in his hand, Patroclus gave the emulation one last stir, then ladled it into a lovely jar, that was waiting off to the side.
Scooping the jam into the jar, Patroclus got a small amount on his finger, and once he had removed all from the caludron he licked his finger.
The taste was unusual, but not at all disgusting, just different.....
"Sir, I am finished, but does any one have any lemon, some juice would be perfect to add to my Melon Jam?"

Alex nodded in understanding, "I mostly use whole grain bread or something equally healthy. Of course as you know I'm not a fan of sweet anything as it is." Alex told Zane smiling, because they did know each other very well as it was. She looked at her left over Apple Jam that was still in her cauldron, "course you can taste my Jam.. just like making a potion." Alex commented amused, making Jam to her was just like making a potion with less complicated ingredients and less.. a lot less very, very unlikely chance of accidentally messing it up and injuring someone because of it.. due to like an explosion.. or forcing them to smell the horrid smell of a potion gone wrong..

Ooooh, fire. Nice.
He tried not to lose focus on the mixture by the pretty flames, and simple kept his eyes up, he was supposed to be in the watch out for boiling, and so he waited.
The Huffie boy was making sure the cherries were boiling (poor cherries, by the way) and once that happened simple reduced the flames and poked (yeah, not with his hands, because that would be crazy) the fruits, the very small fruits.

Treyen took some other cherries from the basket, the ones that were not on the cauldron and tasted them again, just to know how much sugar she should add.
Mmmhmmm. Maybe 5. Because his cherries were sort of sweet. Odd. But, yes, there were five cups of sugar on their way to the cherry cauldron.

This was...slightly boring, though. He didn't enjoy the waiting parts of any potions, or of this potion, because Prof. Lafay usually made sure you had other stuff to do while you waited for something else to be ready...which was not the case in here.
Well, he could prep the jar, right? And eat other cherries.
Oh! Oh! The sugar is gone! When was the sugar gone?! Never mind. He simply increased the flames. Pretty flames.
Quote:
* Continue to stir, making sure the fruit keeps moving so that it doesn't burn. When it gets hot enough, you will feel your jam begin to set.
Boiling, then stirring, while boiling, and stirring. Yeah. Cooking was not really that fun...why was Potions any different? Surely it was totally the opposite, like, in Potions, 'harvesting' for the ingredients wouldn't be fun, while in Herbology growing the plants was super fun....and, when it came to the cauldron part, Potions was more fun, because truth be told, this was not Herbology anymore, this was Cooking.
"When it gets hot enough". How was he supposed to know that? Ooooooh...right, when it looks like jam.
Quote:
* Remove your jam from the heat, and ladle into a jar while still hot. BE CAREFUL!
Flames up! Er, no, flames off!
It was time to try and not get burned while the jam made its way to the jar. Was there a magical way to do this? Treyen looked around but didn't notice anyone doing the same thing he was at the moment. So, muggle way.
He didn't like this part, he had to be extra careful. But slowly he managed to get most of the jam into a jar, the rest of it will be cleaned from the desk.
DONE!
He clasp his hands together and was ready to try out the jam. One finger made it way towards the jam...and then to his mouth. Uh-Oh. Ack! It was too sugar-y! Ants will find it delicious, though.
"Er, Professor, I'm done, and I'd say you could try but I think the five cups of sugar were too much..." true, he wouldn't advise trying it, "...but you could try the cherries, they're pretty good" the boy nodded, eating another one of his cherries.

Mmm. This was setting quite nicely, and Brody thought that it was ready for the last instruction on the board now. Keeping the mixture stirring, Brody looked up to read that final intruction. With a smile, she gave her mixture one last slow stir, before removing the head with her wand, and picking up a nice jar.
She had a feeling that this jam was going to taste nice, because she was well perfect right? Picking up the ladle, she ladelled her strawberry jam into the jar, being careful to not spill any down the side, because that would be not so good. She also tried to get as much out of the cauldron as possible, because she didn't want to leave any out hehe. After the jar was full she placed it on the side, and cleaned the ladle with magic, so it wouldn't be Sticky.
The blonde then noticed that Goldy was finished too. "Does your's taste nice Goldy?" Brody asked, as she got a little spoon off of her desk, and put a little of the jam on it, so that she could taste it. Mmm. Yummy.

Levitating the almost completely cut up watermelon to an empty space on one of the wooden desks, once there, she cut off the last piece of rind on the watermelon before glancing back at the instructions.
Oh right, gotta cut the watermelon into small chunks now. Mwaha! using the diffindo spell three more times, she placed the chunks of watermelon into one of the free cauldrons before using the wooden spoon to squish them slightly. Hehe. Watermelon soup!
Actually, how good would that taste if she made that? Raising a brow at her own thoughts, the Slytherin took a quick glance to Patroclus, wondering if he'd be willing to help her create such a thing. Eh, she'd ask later.
Now, back to her almost made jam. Now that she thought about it as she continued to crush the watermelon, this was going to taste horrible with just the melon and sugar. It HAD to have something else. Patroclus was right in that point. Lemon would do splendid with it. Or lime juice. Or..
...raspberries!
A perfect blend of sweetness and tart! She just, needed raspberries now. Surely the watermelon wouldn't go bad if she left it here for a few minutes.

Moving back over to the table with the seeds, Evelyn quickly spotted a small pile of raspberry seeds. Picking a few up, she jogged over to her spot where she had grown her other things and dug a small hole before putting the seeds in. Good. Now the water...and then the spell... and then...VOILA!
A small raspberry bush! With, perfect little red raspberries. Hehe. Yea, no rumbling of the ground to distract her here. Picking a few of the small red fruit, she washed them with the aguamenti spell as she walked back to her station before sticking them in with the watermelon chunks. Now, if the professor really did have lemon or something, this would be even more perfect.

Ooo, Evelyn was going to make watermelon jam!
Destiny wondered if she was going to SHARE it! Unless Dodson was going to collect all their jars of jam and eat it for himself. Orrrrr worse than him eating ALL the jam would be gifting the jars and giving them to Lafay as an Anniversary gift! Ewww gross!
She didn't want to think about those two anymore, she had seen enough to give her a lifetime of nightmares.
She finished cutting the pineapple into chunks, and grabbed a cauldron, placing it riiiiight in front of her. It was easier when the cauldron was closer, so she didn't drop any of the pieces of fruit on the ground. That would be wasteful and Destiny was NOT wasteful..especially when it came to food..even food she didn't like..like pineapples.
Grabbing a spoon off the table, she stuck it in her cauldron and started to crush the pieces of normal, uncool pineapple. Hehe, she wondered how many people in class thought this was like being in Potion's class. At least Dodson hasn't lit them on fire..yet. He was spending an awful amount of time with Lafay lately, and her traits could rub off on him. She shivered at the though and glanced down at her cauldron. Seeing the little pile of crushed fruit inside, she pulled out her wand and pointed to the bottom of said cauldron, "Incendio!"
Now that the fire was lit, it was time for the most boring part EVER..
..waiting for the stuff to boil.

AJ gathered his fruit from the plants he had just grown. Magic always amazed him even though he had been around it all his life. Using the water spell, Aguementi, he clean the blackberries. He was careful to control the force of the water so that the berries were not bruised. Once the berries were cleaned he popped one into his mouth to see how sweet they were. He knew from his mom that that was important to do so he would know just how much sugar to use. The berry was sweet with just a hint of tartness so AJ decided to go with just 4 cups of sugar.
He placed the sugar and berries into his copper cauldron. Using the bluebell flames charm he began to mash and stir the sugar into the berries using the a locomotion charm. Soon the mixture began to combine together to the point you couldn't see the sugar but you did see a rich, dark purple juice and fruit in the cauldron. The mixture wasn't quite boiling so he took out his silver knife and dipped the tip into the cauldron then using his finger he took a small amount from it to taste. He thought, to himself, pretty good so far.
He kept a eye on the spoon as it circle the cauldron as the jam became hotter and after it came to a boil he reduced the heat so that jam would thicken slowly and not scorch. In another pot he placed the jar, and lid in boiling water so they would sterlize and so that the lid would seal when it was screwed on so the jam would be preserved. As he worked he was glad that his mom had make he help put up the jams and jellies last summer because all the information she taught him was coming in handy now. AJ checked the jam to test its thickness. He again dipped the tip of the knife into the jam. He watched as the jam dripped from the tip back into the pot then when he was sure it was cooled he ran he finger across the side knife to feel the thickness. He decided a few more minutes before he had to decide if his jam would be served with or without the seeds.
He checked the jam again after a few minutes and it ready to jar. He decided that since he had no food mill and trying to remove hot seeds from the jam might go haywire that his jam would have seeds. Tapping the jar with the tip of his wand it rose out of the boiling water and lowered to the tabletop. Using a ladle and jar funnel he filled the jar, then tapping lid it settled on top. Using his dragon scale gloves, after he had used a cleaning spell on them, he screwed the lid onto the jar.

"Sir you are a legend", Patroclus smiled, as he caught the lemon, only barely with the tips of his fingers. A legend yes, the best thrower maybe not he joked to himself. "Aguamenti"
Taking the clean lemon to his work station, Patroclus placed his hand on top of it and proceed to roll the lemon, it was after all the best way to extract all of the possible juice. "Diffindo!" with a flick of his wand, the boy halved the lemon, and squeezed the first half into the jam jar. With a teaspoon, he mixed the juice around, and tested the tiniest bit, Hmmmmmm still too sweet, the thought to himself. Taking up the second half he gave the lightest squeezed rendering only a few drops of lemon juice into the jar, and then with a new Teaspoon the boy tried again, "Perfect!" he smiled as he took out a grater and grated a small section of the lemon skin into the jar, "For zest!"
Screwing on the lid, he gave it a shake, then reopened his Melon and Lemon jam, "Would you care to try sir?"
Daisy started the process all over again. She picked four tomatoes and cleaned them off. Then cut off their little stems and inspected them for bruises. One of them had a bruise so she threw it out and picked another. Once is was clean and passed inspection she dicded them up chef style and the looked at her cauldron. It was still dirty. She waved her wand around in it and it came clean. She then dropped the tamatoes in it and lit a fire and waited for them to boil.

Alex snorted, she had a feeling that the Professor liked all kinds of Jam, no matter what. "Professor, you can try some of mine if you would like." Alex told him raising her hand. She was nice, just normally too shy to offer to help someone and such but Zane did the same thing and he was normally right about things like this.. when it wasn't about Potions Class of course. Besides, if he liked the lightly tart of the Pear Jam then she was sure he wouldn't mind the just sweet enough Apple Jam..
Daisy finally brought it to a boil and then removed the heat. It simmered and then softened and she smiled. She didn't really know how much sugar to add. she picked another tomatoe really quick washed it off and then sliced off a piece. As she chewed on it she realized about five cups of sugar should to it. She added the sweet confection that was sugar and stirred it in until dissolved. She brought the heat back up and stirred with her left hand while cutting another piece of tomatoe to eat with her right. She felt the mixture in cauldron begin to set and it looked thick. She poured it into a jar and grabbed a clean spoon. She pulled out some, blew on it and popped it into her mouth. It tasted kind of like ketchup but she wasn't so sure for she had been eating tomates so anything would taste kind of different to her. "Umm, Professor can you test taste mine? I think it taste kind of like ketcu but I'd like a second opinion please?"

The crushed oat grains had come to a 'boil.' Technically, they weren't oat grains now, more of a chunky!paste-like mix. Gold, as she lowered the heat underneath her cauldron, wondered if it would be a good idea to add sugar to the contents of her cauldron.
Or perhaps she needed to add a good amount more than usual. Maybe seven or eight cups. That sounded like a bit of a risk though and, despite the fact that Gold usually took a HEAP of risks when she baked [that, in her opinion, was the fun of the skill and task, and everything related to it] she decided to play it safe, right now. Most likely because she had never considered oat jam before, and the thought was still a pretty new one.
It was like unfamiliar territory.
Soo.
She was going to tread carefully. Six cups of sugar, 'twas.
Excito Orbis.
Stir, stir, stir. Gold had nothing to do while the stirrer worked away, so she chose to see what everyone else was up to. Most of the other students were still making the jam, though one or two had done so, and were now transferring the contents of their cauldrons into jars. Yumm. Gold flicked her wand, brought the heat up a notch, and eyed what was now inside her cauldron. It was like a thick syrup. Oat!sugar syrup.
Would it taste good?
She could only wonder, right now.
Carefully but firmly, Gold picked up a big, wooden spoon, and started to ladle some of the oat jam into it.

ZOMG!
She could have a little nibble, right now!
There was a little problem, though -- and the problem was that the strawberries that had been a result of her magic, were biiiig. Gold couldn't possibly 'nibble' them, here. It would look ridiculous! Then again, who was she to judge that? Fun ought to be fun.
So Gold, having cleaned up her cauldron after having made the oat jam, picked up one of the large strawberries and, after giving it a quick rinse, bit into it. Yummm. Gold wanted to eat all of it, right away. If only she had some chocolate. Maybe she ought to take up Professor Dodson on that lemon!offer, and squeeze some lemon juice on top of this strawberry, for a change. Hehehe. Gold took another bite, as she watched everyone still working away. This was turning out to be an amazing lesson.
Strawberreh!nibble.

Oh, she had an idea!

Marie checked her mixture to see if the tomatoes were softening up yet. Finding that they were she new it was time to add the sugar. She knew she was going to add at least the six cups of sugar since her fruit wasn't what you would exactly call sweet.
So in went the sugar, one cup at a time. She let the spoon stir in each cup before adding the next. Once all six cups were added she just watched as the spoon stirred the mixture itself.
Now to wait for all that sugar to disolve. How long would that take? Eh, who knows, time for more people watching since the spoon was doing all the work.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer until the fruit has softened. * Depending on which type of fruit you are using, a different amount of sugar is required. It all comes down to personal taste. Fruits that are already sweet will need roughly 4 cups of sugar. Fruits that are not particularly sweet.. roughly 6.
* Stir the mixture until the sugar has fully dissolved. When the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and bring back to the boil.
* Continue to stir, making sure the fruit keeps moving so that it doesn't burn. When it gets hot enough, you will feel your jam begin to set.
* Remove your jam from the heat, and ladle into a jar while still hot. BE CAREFUL!

A legend?
Well, noone had ever called him THAT before. Sage smiled.. a slightly prouder smile than before as he made his way over to test out Patroclus' melony lemony jam.
Just as he'd done during his previous taste testing, the professor took some jam from the small leftovers in the cauldron. He didn't want to mess up everyones jars!
... YUM.
"MMM, this is good!" Sage exclaimed, licking his lips in a satisfying manner. "The lemon really gives it that extra little ... something. Well done, Patroclus!"

Besides, if he liked the lightly tart of the Pear Jam then she was sure he wouldn't mind the just sweet enough Apple Jam..
After trying Patroclus' jam, he had himself another offer. This time from Alex who had apple jam. He couldn't turn down an offer for jam so quickly got himself a spoonful which he planted into his gob.
"This is good, just the right amount of sugar I'd say. Nice!" You could NEVER have enough jam.

He wasn't sure how the tomato jam would turn out.. but he definitely wanted to give it a try!
So that's what he did.
And it was a little ... strange. Sweet, and tomatoey.
Like ketchup. Hm.
"It's interesting," he commented lightly, licking clean his spoon. Maybe it was 'interesting' because he'd spoon also had apple, cherry, pear, strawberry and melony lemony jam on it.. "Sort of ketchupy, you're right." It certainly wasn't disgusting.
Setting the spoon to one side, Sage gave his watch a check. EEK! It was getting late! "Okay everyone, if you could finish up and jar your jam.. it's almost the end of the lesson. You can leave all your cleaning for me!"

Gold looked down at her oat jam, the lid on the jar screwed into place. She hadn't tasted it yet, and she had no idea what it would feel like to. She gave it a little nod, as if to tell the jam that she was going to try it, not just now because it was something she hadn't tried before.
She looked around, to ensure that her area of the workstation was neat, tidy and in perfect order. "Thanks for the great lesson, Professor, it made my day," she said, as she straightened up. Before asking, "Do you need a hand with the cleaning, sir?"

Alex nodded having already put her Jam in a jar. She decided to leave the rest of the apples from the tree, after all she could eat apples whenever she wanted to.. they always had fresh fruit at the table in the great hall after all. She glanced at Zane slightly amused playing with her necklace as she waited for the Professor to declare the end of the lesson... she really had to thank Zane for that Rose he gave her, espessically if it was such hard work! Alex added mentally. Oh right didn't the Professor compliment her Jam? "Thanks Professor." Alex told him smiling slightly,
Sweet no cleanup! Zane smiled as he got his stuff together, readying it for the professor to end the lesson. He smiled towards Alex as she played with her necklace. "Professor Dodson, would you like a jar of this pear jam? I think I have enough to give some away." he said with a smile.

Hearing the professor say the lesson was almost over Marie checked her mixture and found that all the sugar had dissolved. She then turned the heat back up so it would come to a boil once again. Once it began to boil she watched as the spoon continued stirring. Would she be able to tell when it started to thicken if she wasn't actually stiring it herself? Probably not.
Pointing her wand at the spoon she said, "Finite!" She reholstered her wand and grabbed the spoon and started stirring it herself. After a few minutes she could tell the mixture was beginning to thicken and start to set.
She put out the fire under the cauldron and stirred the mixture just a little bit more. She then ladled it into a jar being careful not to burn herself. Looking at it she couldn't tell what it would taste like. It had the consistancy of tomato paste but she had a feeling that is not what it would taste like, not with all that sugar she added.
Now who could she get to taste it for her?
The professor of course. He seemed to be tasting everyone's jams so hopefully he would taste hers too, even though it technically wasn't a jam. "Professor Dodson, would you like to taste my... creation?" She then looked over at Carter, "You want to try some too?" she asked holding a spoonful out to him. Time to see if he really is a 'brave' Gryffindor.

"Anyone else want some lemon juice?" He beamed, picking one of the fruits and tossing it in Patroclus' direction. Well, he AIMED in that direction. He wasn't very good at throwing..
Alrighty then. Now that she had the watermelon and raspberries crushed in there, then was the time for....fiiiiirrrrreeee!
"Incendio." she said, pointing her wand underneath the cauldron to light the fire. Hehehehehehehehehe. She could stare at the flame until the stuff was boiling like that blackboard said to wait to do. It didn't take long surprisingly, but it took longer then she expected. Perhaps she was a tad bit impatient today. Lowering the flame so the mixture stuff would soften, Evelyn tapped her foot and hummed very quietly a tune as she waited.
Using only three cups of sugar, since she really didn't like sweet jam and the watermelon was already a sweet enough fruit, and she only pretty much used the sugar to counter to tartness of the raspberries, Evelyn looked over to see the Professor creating a lemon tree. Oh, he was the best right now. She didn't know what she would have done if she didn't have any lemons or limes to put into the jam.

Making her way over to the tree, she picked on of the lemons that looked BETTER than all the others, since it was better than all the others... she made her way back over to her station she cut the lemon using the 'diffindo' spell before squeezing half of the lemon into the cauldron. However, she held her other hand underneath it to catch any seeds that may have fallen out. There was already watermelon seeds in there, she didn't need any lemon seeds as well. Plus those ones were hard to chew.
Washing her hands, she Slytherin started to stir the mixture so it didn't burn, and after awhile, it was starting to get harder to stir. Oh good, it was finally done. Looking into her cauldron, and seeing the reddish-pink color of the jam, trying her hardest not to cringe at the color since everyone knew Pink was evil, the Slytherin placed her stirrer down next to the cauldron and extinguished the flame underneath the cauldron before taking a jar.
She would...try it later. Or maybe...hmmm. Ladling her jam into the clear container and placing the lid on top once she was done, Evelyn quickly took a small sample from the ladle and was pleasantly surprised that it was actually good. Something to get used to of course, but it definitely wasn't bad. Watermelons and raspberries definitely went together. Hehehe.
Glancing back to the professor when he said the lesson was almost up, out of habit, the Slytherin cleaned up her station, before holding guarding her jar of jam on the table as if it was a rare item...almost glaring at everyone. Yea, this was HERS. No one touch it.

Soon Carter's fruit mixture had been boiling, then simmered until his fruit was nice and super mushy and soft. Grabbing cups of sugar he poured them in to the mixture until he decided to stop.
He did love sugar.
He stirred in the sugar until it was dissolved. He then turned the heat back up. He kept the ladle he was using in the cauldron and then pointed his wand at it. "Locomotor Ladle" he said moving his wand around in a circle. Soon the cauldron was stirring on it's own.
Then Marie was offering some of her jam to him. "Sure." he said.
Then he remembered something.
"Didn't you grow... tomatoes...?" he asked. In that case he'd have to try her jam with a side of french fries. Which was convenient, since he also grew potatoes.
He then checked on his jam. It had thickened off. He stopped the flame beneath his cauldron. He then carefully began ladling the mixture into a jar.
Hmm... watermelon jam... The thought was beginning to grow on him.
