The sharp smell of hot metal cauldrons filled with malodorous contents mingle with the cool, musty smell of dungeon air, marrying to create that peculiar scent that veteran Hogwarts students immediately recognize as Eau de Potions Classroom. Buried deep within the castle's underbelly, the potions classroom is dim and dank, lit only by the flicker of candle-laden chandeliers and the dim blue flames that sit beneath the cauldrons at the front of the class. If you were to touch the bare stone walls, and it is not recommended that you do, your hand would come back to you lightly coated with an unpleasant cold slime-- the accumulation of years of potion vapors, combined with dust and mildew and condensation and things you'd probably rather not think about (much less actually have on your skin).

The room houses several large obsidian workstations, each set with two wooden stools to encourage the students to work in pairs. Each workstation has ample room for the students to set up their cauldrons and other equipment, and the walls are lined with jars and bottles containing all sorts of potions supplies, from friendly-looking dried flowers to jars of bulging eyeballs and entrails. One contains something that vaguely looks like a pickled hand, and it pulses as it floats, as though waving at the students.

Each container is labeled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.

At the front of the classroom there is a lectern and a desk with the professor's chair. There is also a workstation with two light grey, almost WHITE cauldrons and several bottles and jars, all with skull-and-crossbones images on them. Behind it, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:

POTIONS PERIOD TWO: COMBINED CLASS
(Basic, O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. Students)

Please be seated. The professor will be with you momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. Please set up your workstations, inspecting your cauldrons and preparing your equipment. N.E.W.T. level students, please set up your workstation and then assist any lower class students as necessary. I expect all students will be set up and ready to work upon my arrival without exception.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

We will be working with extraordinarily dangerous materials! For your own safety, please make sure that you have brought all equipment with you, especially the following:

Dragon Hide Gloves
Protective respiratory masks with high-grade XXX3 Ministry Approved filters installed (No, a bubble-head charm is NOT a satisfactory alternative)

If you do not have this equipment for any reason, see me before class starts.

Due to the nature of this lesson, I ask that all of you prepare your cauldrons specially prior to class. You are to slowly chill your cauldrons using any of the many simple chilling charms in existence. O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. level students should help the younger students to accomplish this. Your cauldron will be at the desired temperature when the alloy turns nearly white -- do not let it get completely white, or the integrity of the alloy will break down and your cauldron WILL shatter.

You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.

Class Synopsis
Post 1- Students have been instructed to set up and to, strangely enough, CHILL their pewter cauldrons to 3 degrees above freezing. Our helpful prefects are assisting students who do not know any of the many charms that chill an object.

Post 83:
Time to Brew! The professor has explained what Aggrotentia is, and informed the students that they should have their safety equipment on hand. Get ready to brew, the first instructions are on the board. Feel free to ask questions!

ooc: Come on in and get set up! Feel free to talk amongst yourselves as you RP working on the potion (just don't turn this into a 'chat thread', or I'd delete your posts without warning). Upperclassmen (Fifth years and up) please RP with the younger students, helping them out as necessary.

You may feel free to use any charm, including those of your own invention, to chill your cauldrons, and in my absence please follow the guidance of any Prefects in the room. Remember: Have fun! Be creative! and Feel free to PM me with questions, as always. Xana

Ivory walked slowly into the near empty room. Her eyes looking this way and that, as if expecting the Professor or Heaven forbid PEEVES to pop out of any corner. Clutching her wand to her, ready to shield, she made her way to one of the workstations near the front (notice it wasn't right at front in case said poltergeist decided to make an appearance at the front of the class again.)

Hopping onto the stool, she looked around some more, and eyed first the skull-and-crossbones jars on the front workstation and then the empty stool next to her. Sighing as she hoped some upperclassman would take pity on her and sit there later,she tapped the fiery tip of her wand to one of the largest patches on her mokeskin belt. Out billowed a large knapsack and in Ivory dug her arm up to the elbow and then a little further as the small girl tried to take out everything they needed.

As she took out the necessary equipment, she decided to save her seat for Arya, after all it was better to have a friend in dangerous cases like the ones that were probably to follow.

Daniel entered the room and looked around, he is among the first to arrived. he had read the note and was happy that he decided that he brought all of his equipments.

He then set up his workstations and took his wand out and put his cauldron in front of him.

He pointed the wand to the cauldron and muttered Glacius and slowly froze the cauldron with it.

Jack had been ill and in the hospital wing during the last class, soooooo he wasn't exactly sure WHY everyone had emerged looking like cats after the last one. He wasn't really sure what to expect as he entered the room--as long as he didn't walk out with a unicorn horn sprouting out of his head or anything, though, he should be ok.

He walked over to his usual seat near the middle of the room and started to pull out his things, glancing up at the chalkboard. Ugghhhh, MASKS!? He hated wearing those things! He also hated when whatever they were working with was SOOO dangerous that is WARRANTED the use of these masks. Blehhh. He sighed and pulled it out anyways, plopping it down next to his gloves as he pulled out his cauldron.

He pulled out his wand, muttered "Glacius" very softly and watched as the cauldron started to cool down. He stopped and touched it, bringing his hand back quickly when he realized that it was perfect--cold, but not TOOOOO cold. He didn't want anything shattering now.

"Anyone need help?" he asked, even though the room was partially empty at the moment.

Mina walked into the potions classroom and made her way to her usual workstation near the front and just off to the left. Her eyes focused on the blackboard, as her mind took in the words. Setting her things down on the workstation, she started to set up.

Pulling our her potions journal, she sit it on the right side and continues on arranging all her things as instructed. Carefully, she thoroughly inspected every piece of equipment she had. She always took emaciate care of her potions things, but one could never be too careful. Finding them all in good condition, she set forth setting them up.

Pulling her cauldron before herself, she carefully inspected it. She had done pretty good job on cleaning it from the previous lesson, but she didn't want to risk anything and wanted to inspect it yet another time to set her at ease. Finding it clean and free of any dents and scratches, she set it down and pulled out her wand. Taking her wand and firmly gripping it, she moved her wand in a wide arc and then an infinity motion. "Lente Leniter Gleuius" she recited softly as she tapped the lip of the cauldron. A slight icy blue light encompassed the cauldron as she smiled to herself.

Seeing as her cauldron was now chilling, she reached for all her other items needed for the lesson. Setting yet another new pair of Dragon Hide Gloves on her journal and her masks beside them, she finished up preparing all the things. She was not going to be taken by surprise at all doing this lesson.

It seemed like she was just heading away from the potions class, and now she was coming back. Sorta like deja vu, except...it wasn't. But it was! Shaking her head, she lifted her bag and moved it to her other shoulder before continuing on her way towards the dungeon's potion classroom. By now, she was almost completely used to the unfamiliar smells that one would breathe in down here, and wasn't at all surprised by the waft of something musky and metal-ish filling the air.

Walking into the room, the found a table in the back towards the right side of the room, making sure her wand was easy access at the moment. If another person blew up there potion, she would be sure to throw up a quick shield and possibly...send a few curses their way...

Clearing her throat, Evelyn read the instructions on the board an raised a brow. She had brought the weird mask thing like it said, and of course the gloves, but what caught her attention was the having to cool your cauldron part. What exactly would they be making to require that process in the procedure? Whatever though. It just better not explode. She didn't want to have a tail or ears or anything. Taking out her notebook, fancy quill, and ink, she set those things aside and started to inspect her cauldron first... the boring, task, of inspecting...the cauldron. Ugh. Eventually she would get to chilling it.

Sarah stopped just inside the doorway of the potions classroom and studied the message Kazi had left them on the board. "O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. level students should help the younger students to accomplish this?.....Oh lovely." She repeated the words as a mutter under her breath.Not that she didn't like helping, she did, she was a Prefect, they were partly there for that.It's just that most of the younger students were probably better than she was anyway....Lesigh.

Strolling over to a free space, Sarah took out all her equipment, placing it very neatly on the desk in front of her.Cauldron in the middle, gloves to the left, face mask to the right.Her notebook and quill were resting on top of the gloves.Bending down to replace her bag on the floor, Sarah went over the chilling spell she knew in her head.Icerio, icerio, icerio. She knew it was supposed to create a blast of air so cold it froze things, but she had never tried it before.

Taking her wand out, she held it very carefully in front of her and performed the slashing X motion, saying the spell slowly and clearly. "Icerio!" Sarah felt the back of the cauldron as she kept her wand focused, and was happy to discover that it was getting colder.As the metal started to get whiter, she bit her lip, hoping against hope that she didn't leave it too long before stopping the spell.After about a minute the metal was starting to give off a cool chill smoke, and, satisfied it was done, Sarah lowered her wand and safely stored it back in her holster. "Good," she smiled.

"If anyone needs help, just ask," she raised her voice slightly, and echoed Jack's words.

Nancy slowly made her way into the Potions classroom with a rather wary expression plastered across her face. She still wasn't sure whether or not to ask Kazi about...IT. And if she did if she should take Oliver with her. Probably. Yes. Definitely. She was not going to face Kazi on her own.

As her eyes roamed the classroom for any familiar faces they first lingered shortly on Jack - whose fault it was they'd lost the Quidditch match...well, sort of - before moving on to Sarah. A small smile made her way onto her face as she took a seat close to the Hufflepuff. "Hey Sarah!"

Quickly scanning through the instructions on the chalkboard Nancy placed her equipment onto the desk before her. Cool down the cauldron? Well...pointing her wand at the desk close to the cauldron not the cauldron directly she muttered, "Glacius!" She didn't want to freeze the cauldron after all.

Well, her plan had apparently been not that well thought through. The cauldron looked alright, exactly as it should be, the desk though? Not so much. It looked sorta...frozen. Oops. With a small flick of her wand she quickly performed teh Hot-Air Charm non-verbally and watched with a small relieved sigh how the desk got back into his non-frozen state. Phew!

"Uh...anybody need help?"

Arya walked into the classroom behind Ivory, being just as cautious as her friend. She didn't want a repeat of the last class. Thr first year was still tired from her previous ordeal even though she did go to sleep, and nothing had helped to shake her nerves. As she took a seat her eyes darted around looking for anything suspicuous while placing all her things on her workstation.

Her eyes finallt landed on the board in the front of the class, reading it slowly. Great, just great. This class was going to be worse than the previous class she just knew it. Sighing she looked around for an older student to help her with preparing her couldron. It seemed that alot of older students were eager to help out."Um, I need some help."she said not to loudly hoping someone would take pity on her.

Glancing inside her cauldron, wondering if it was as cold in there as the outside was, Sarah didn't automatically notice someone move in to the space at the side of her.Hearing her name, woke her up however, and a smile spread across her face when she saw that it was Nancy. "Hey, Nancy.You remembered the mask then?" Sarah nodded down at the Slytherin's equipment. "I had to run back to the common room for mine.I'd got within a few yards of the classroom when I realised I didn't have it," she chuckled as she watched the girl cool her own cauldron down.

Nodding as Nancy offered help to others as well, Sarah looked around the room.There seemed to be more older students offering help, than younger ones needing it.But then....

Kay saw the board in front of the class change. She read the board and wrote it down into her potions journal. She want to make sure she didn't miss anything.

Kay started the cleaning of her cauldron. She wanted to make sure it was ready for class. Reading her journal and checking the board, Kay wasn't sure how to frost her cauldron. "Umm..Can someone help me with the Frosting part on my cauldron?" She asked looking around the class room.

Sarah was ALLL over it.

Scurrying down the end of the row of desks, Sarah placed her hand on Arya's back and smiled down at her. "You need some help, you say? For which bit, the chilling? Here let's get your cauldron out first..." Sarah held her hands out ready to take it from the first year, and set it up.

Nancy automatically returned the smile Sarah directed at her before following the girl's gaze...which was on her respiratory mask. A smirk tugged at the corner of her lips as she chuckled slightly. "Honestly? No. Though, y'know, our Common Room's quite close." Who would think of their respiratory safety mask-thingy?! Exactly, nobody.

She nodded at the younger girl whom Sarah was helping. Being all Prefect-y. "Now that's a good Prefect." She teased playfully before shifting her books on a pile and resting her arms on it. With her blue eyes lingering on the door for a while Nancy put her chin on top of her arms lazily.

To ask or not to ask, that was the question.

Gold was NOT apprehensive.

She had managed to handle that last period fine, had she not? The fifth year could not say she was pleased with herself for that, but she was sort of satisfied. Hopeful that this period would be less of a disaster, too. Though she did not really think that was possible.

Mostly because of Professor Kazimeriz.

Scary!cool teacher!

Entering the classroom, she scanned it with a pair of really, bright green eyes that were not exactly very cheerful. She was in a good mood, yes, but this class ... well, it reminded her of how that last period of potions had turned out. The thought of kneazle!ears and whiskers might seem a little funny, but she really did not want to end up with a tail or something worse, this time round!

With a little shrug, she read the instructions on the board, and started to set up her workstation. Looked like she had to chill her cauldron, too. "Anybody need help?" she asked, as she took out her wand, and tucked a bang of bright red hair behind an ear as she did so. Yes, yes, it was her signature action. She knew.

Finally done with inspecting her cauldron, Evelyn suddenly realized she didn't know any chilling, cooling charms. Well, she knew one, but it probably wouldn't be enough as what the Professor wanted. Hearing someone ask if anyone needed help, she turned her head only to spot Gold standing a little on the other side of the room she was. Ah, perfectly suitable person. Buuut...

Ehhh...should she ask for help? It wasn't really her...style...to ask for someone's help. She'd rather figure it out by herself and hated asking, but seeing as she only brought her potions book which would be no help for her problem, she might as well suck it up and ask.

"Hey Gold?" she said a little quietly, before clearing her throat and speaking a little more louder. "You know the spell right?" And she didn't really have to say in words that she needed help...right?

Did Destiny want to be back here? No, not at all.

At least all the magenta colored potion was no where to be seen. But she still checked anyway, just in case. She didn't want to be turned into another animal again. Once was enough for her.

Shuffling into the classroom, Destiny headed towards Evelyn who was..asking for help?

NOOOO WAY!

Inspecting the seat she was about to sit in, for any magenta potion, she saw that is was all good and she sat down. Now the fun part was inspecting her cauldron.

She was kidding about that being fun..

Marie reluctantly walked back into the potions class. After that last disaster she was not too thrilled to be back. There was no way she wanted to end up looking like a kneazle and chasing a mouse again. That was enough humiliation for a lifetime.

Not seeing Evan in class yet she found an empty table near the back of the room and started to unpack her things. She made sure to take out her dragon hide gloves and the funny looking mask. She inspected her cauldron then set it next to the gloves. Once that was done she got out her journal, quill and ink.

Once everything was out she read the instructions on the board.

We will be working with extraordinarily dangerous materials! 'What in this class isn't dangerous?' she thought. 'Chill the cauldron.' How in the world was she supposed to do that? She didn't know any chilling charms yetl. She was definately going to need help with this one.

Looking around the class she asked "Is there anyone that can help me with chilling my cauldron?" She sat back watching the others as she waited for someone to help her.

... and this, Gold knew, was another person who had once been a KneazleCruppie. "Would you like me to teach you the spell?" she asked politely. Well, one of the many spells. She knew she could just go ahead and do the spellwork for Marie - the girl's name was Marie, wasn't it? - but what benefit would that be to Marie, in the long run?

It was always better to teach someone how to do a spell, than to do it for them, yep.

Arya jumped slightly, startled when she felt a hand on her back. Yea, she was totally nervious about being back in the class. It took everything in her to come back for the second one. Looking up she calmed when she saw it was just her prefect Sarah."Hey Sarah. Yea, I don't know the spell for it." Turning back to her cauldron and picked it up, handing to the older girl with a small smile.

Aw. She must have noticed that Evelyn was asking for help. Well...that better be the only thing she did, because is Evelyn heard about this later on, she was NOT going to be a happy Slytherin. Not like she was ever really happy before...

Narrowing her eyes at Destiny for a moment, she turned back to Gold when she heard the Gryffindor say it was her turn to try.

And that little demonstration was all she needed. "Frigus. Okay, thank you." Evelyn said, taking her wand out of her sleeve and pointing it at her cauldron. She'd never heard of this spell before, but that didn't matter.

"It wasn't a problem," Gold said, with a small - though warm - smile. Then she stepped back, green eyes bright like they usually were, as she watched Evelyn cast the spell.

"G'job!" She could feel the little jet of cold air whoosh out of the tip of Evelyn's wand. Ah, she did so love chilling-charms. Such nifty, little things... and now to see who else could do with a bit of help.

At least Evelyn asked for help from the awesome Prefect Gold, not some other unawesome one. 'Hi Gold!' And she had an awesome name as well. Yes she did.

Destiny watched as Gold demonstrated the spell for Evelyn, and was about to try it herself, but..she still didn't have her wand. Where was that KneazleRaiden at!? She needed her wand back!

Why was Evelyn looking at her like that? Destiny didn't even laugh at her for asking for help..not yet anyway. She watched as Evelyn tried the spell, and it worked! 'Hey Evelyn, can you do that to my cauldron too?' she whispered to her friend. She didn't need the whole class she didn't have her wand.

Especially Kay. She would try something..

... and this, Gold knew, was another person who had once been a KneazleCruppie. "Would you like me to teach you the spell?" she asked politely. Well, one of the many spells. She knew she could just go ahead and do the spellwork for Marie - the girl's name was Marie, wasn't it? - but what benefit would that be to Marie, in the long run?

It was always better to teach someone how to do a spell, than to do it for them, yep.

"Hi, yes that would be great if you could teach me how to do this. Thanks for the help, I'm Marie by the way." Marie was happy to have someone teach her how to do this, she would hate for Kazi to come in class and her station not be ready.

Smiling at Arya, glad to have a friend in this class she started to get all her potion things out.

Reaching her hand in to depths that were enchanted to hold more than it seemed, she removed her glass phials in their special case, her potion making kit in its small wooden chest and her Standard Size 2 Cauldron safely packaged in its dragon hide satchel. Then came her dagger and knife in their proper sheaths and her mortar and pestle in their small protective pouch. Her brass scales in their flat case was placed on the table next followed by her elbow length Graphorn and Manticore hide gloves that had been a gift from her grandmother who thought safety was the number one concern in potions, hence all the safety precautions on all her equipment.

Reaching in one final time she got out her Protective respiratory mask, journal, and lab manual.

Tapping her now empty pouch with the fiery tip of her wand, she watched it immediately retract back against her belt becoming a patch on her belt once more.

Rubbing her hands together excitedly, she began to take off everything's protective casings.

Placing them all on the side, she then set up her cauldron on it's stand .... and stared.

Opening her belt yet again she fished around for her charms book and flipped to the index. Finding the relevant spell, she leafed through the pages until she came to the right one.

Hmmmm...Glacius?" Rereading the passage, she figured it probably wasn't a good idea to try it out on her cauldron herself without practicing it first.

"Can someone help me with the Glacius charm please?" She asked to the general upperclassmen, hoping someone wouldn't mind taking the time to help her.

She then proceeded to taking off all

Destiny had to be the most adorable person on the face of Planet Earth. Gold beamed at her, before turning her attention to Marie. "I'm Gold. Nice to meet you, Marie."

Now for ze spell, of course.

"The incantation is Frigus," she told Marie, pleasantly. "... and the wand movement. This." She pointed her wand at Marie's cauldron, and gave her wrist a neat, little flick, the same way she had when she had demonstrated the nifty charm for Evelyn. "You should get a jet of chilly wind," she told Marie. "The more you concentrate, the chillier it will be."

Spells like these mostly depended on one's imagination. Their result was what as strong or as weak as one wanted it to be, and that was exactly what Gold liked about them.

"Hey there, Ivory," Gold waved at the younger Ravenclaw. "Be there, in a minute." She didn't really use Glacius that much, to be honest, but she certainly knew how to cast it.
