Default Office of Professor M.A. Shackleton-Clark

Despite that the Arithmancy Office had been occupied by the same professor for the previous six terms, and that it would once again be occupied by that same woman for yet another, the appearance of the office this term differs strikingly when compared to the previous six. In addition to the large original windows on the right wall of the office, showing the vast Hogwarts Grounds, new enchanted windows have been added to the office's left wall, allowing copious amounts of sunshine to bathe the office and depicting in the distance an Irish castle of great significance to Macadrian Shackleton-Clark.

In addition to new windows, the walls sport a new hue of robin's egg blue and dozens of portraits and photographs in ornate gold frames. The largest of these portraits depicts newly wed Macadrian and her husband, former Hogwarts professor Fabian Clark, in their wedding attire smiling joyously on their happiest of days.

Inside Professor Shackleton-Clark's office is one familiar object - a large, heavy mahogany desk, behind which stands a yellow floral-patterned cushioned armchair. On the desk sit more photos in frames with numerous moving pictures of her loved ones, including her two sisters, both identical to each other and to her; her cousin Max and his growing family; her father walking her down the aisle; and Macadrian and her husband Fabian on their honeymoon in Greece. The desk also sports crystal vases filled with purple roses and orange lilies (Professor Shackleton-Clark's favorites), numerous small white candles in glass votive holders, an ink well and a peacock feather quill, a fresh blank piece of parchment, and plenty of books on the subject of Arithmancy.

The wall behind her desk consists entirely of shelves filled with books, most of which relate to Arithmancy, although there is an entire section for books on other school subjects, particularly Ancient Runes, Divination, and Astronomy, and some books on topics not taught in the school, including healing and medicinal potions to name a few.

By the large non-magical windows, bedecked with beautifully-ornate gold curtains, stands a mahogany coffee-table covered in a number of Wizarding magazines, spanning topics from academic research in Arithmancy to world politics to witch's fashion. Surrounding the table is a squashy chaise lounger and a small, comfortable looking couch, over which is draped several thick quilts. Next to the chaise is a wooden cabinet with wooden doors, containing mugs, glasses, and small plates for entertaining company, such as students or other staff members, as well as an assortment of sugary snacks. In the fireplace across the room is a fresh pot of hot cocoa warming above the fire.

If you wish to feast your eyes on the interior of this professor's very charming office, you must knock (and please do so loudly as Professor Shackleton-Clark tends to hum to herself at a rather high volume) and await her approval for entrance.

Tiberius approached the office, mulling over his question. He'd gone back up to the common room to do his homework, but wasn't quite sure about the distinctions and figured he should ask.

Tibi balled up his fist and hit the rather large door with it. *BOOMP, BOOMP, BOOMP* He hoped it was ok to do...

Alexandra approached the Arithmancy professors door and she noticed another student waiting outside as well. She smiled as she was approaching and said a quiet "Hello" and stood beside him and asked, "Have you already knocked?" She was suddenly preoccupied with her robe sleeve as she waited to see the professor.

All the single witches. All the single witches. All the single witches. Now put your wands up. Macadrian was singing that catchy little tune to herself when she heard a loud knock on the door. "Come in please!" She continued to hum. Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh.

Sidling along the corridors, it took Jake alot of courage before he went and knocked on the door of the office, though some were already there. Biting his lip, he waited to see if they were invited in or not. Either way, he could wait. It wasn't like he was all that stuck on Arithmancy.

Well... he was... but he could get help from another student, right?

Tibi timidly entered the office. He was overwhelmed and not aware of much, but he noticed the professor was.. humming?

"Ummm.. excuse me, Professor? I was wondering if I could ask some questions about the lesson and our homework. I sat down to work on it, but I was a little confused."

Tibi shuffled his feet as he stood there. He was quite nervous and unsure of himself. He didn't like how this felt; he was usually really good at school.

Professor Shackleton was Varius' Head of House and as such, it was she that he needed to speak to in regards of dropping Ancient Runes as a class. Whilst Varius had previously enjoyed his Ancient Rune lessons, his mother convinced him to no longer be taking them now that Professor Lupa was still the Professor - it was too dangerous, she argued, and he couldn't really disagree. He knocked on the door, noting that Jake Upstead was also standing outside the office. "Hi," he greeted and waited.

Clumsily Rayedem walked to his Arithmancy professor's office. He'd been wandering around in the second floor, trying to remember where it was, and had gotten lost about five times already. But then as he arrived at a place where there were other students waiting, he'd been sure that he'd come to the right place.

Ask her about the lesson. Ask her about the homework. Had I done it right? Well.. Tell her you were lost in the middle of the lesson. It's okay. Don't be afraid, now.. You did all you can with the homework.

Walking up to the door, Rayedem took a deep breath knocked three times, then he stepped back and waited for the professor's response.

To the two students who had just entered her office with the same question, Macadrian replied, "I'm not surprised. This is one of the most challenging concepts to understand in Arithmancy. What specifically would you like some further instruction with? I am more than happy to help you understand the material better, and of course, you could always contact your prefects to inquire whether they could tutor you, or point you in the direction of a good tutor."

Shackleton-Clark heard a few more knocks upon her door and called out to them, "The door is open. Please enter!" She glanced around the room and thought she may need to move the group to the couches if there was more than once person outside her door. She only had three chairs in front of her desk. Well, the couches were more comfortable anyway. Not to mention, there was a table so she could break out the china and have some beverages.

Tiberius sat down in front of the professor's desk and rummaged through his sack. Pulling out the parchment where he'd started his homework, he handed it to her.

Text Cut: parchment

6. Tiberius

T (2) 0-2
I (9) 2-11
B (2) 11-13
E (5) 13-18
R (9) 18-27
I (9) 27-36
U (3) 36-39
S (1) 39-40

At 17, I will be nearing the end of E.

"Well, professor," Tibi started nervously, "I think I understand how to figure out what Transit I'm in, but I was thinking about the interpretation and got confused." Tibi scrunched up his face. "I know there are the two other transits that use different names, but the letter meanings are the same? Is that right?" Tibi paused. "So.. I'm having trouble figuring out what's part of the Physical. Like, in class I talked about B and being shy... but is feeling shy physical or mental? And for homework, at 17 I'm in E... but is feeling inspired part of the physical transit?"

Tibi looked at the professor expectantly; he hoped she'd be able to clarify. Tibi thought this might qualify as what his Mum would call 'subtlenuance,' whatever that was.

Upon hearing the Professor's request, Varius wasted no time with niceties such as waiting for the people who were there before him to enter first. Oh no, no, that just wasn't called for. He swung open the door of the Huffie Head's office and saw one remaining chair in front of the Professor's desk. He moved quickly toward it and plopped his backside nice and comfortably on top. "Hello Professor," he greeted in his usual airy tone, too distracted by the decor of her office to even attempt at rubbing her head in his usual method of salutations. He waited patiently for the Professor to finish helping out the other student with his problem. Numbers hurt Varius' head - that was for sure.

After waiting nervously for a while, Rayedem heard Professor Shackleton-Clark's instruction and he walked gladly through the door. The past moments had been a little crazy for him; standing in front of his teacher's door feeling so alone despite all the other students who were also waiting. He didn't dare to look up, to meet their eyes, let alone to say hello.

Wow, he thought, her office was awesome. This isn't like any of the muggle teachers' offices that he'd seen. They all have basically the same concept, but were made very differently. Realizing that the professor might be busy, he refrained from scanning the room and turned to the professor. He began,

"Um, professor, I do have a question." he was so nervous that he couldn't stand quite still then, "You see, I'm a muggle-born, and I'm not familiar with all this, so, uhm.. I was a little lost in the last lesson, but I could get some help with that," he quickly added, having noticed that probably the other students had come to her for the same reason, and had already given the solution that would pretty much the same as the one she'd give him, "It's just, um, I've handed in my homework, I.. Just want to know if I've done it correctly. There won't be any house point deduction if I haven't, right? Or.. Will there?" he ended.

Alexandra turned a light shade of pink and said, "Well, Professor, I am kind of lost on all of it. I think I will ask Chris is he can give me a hand with the work though, I don't want to bother you. I can see you are quite busy" She motioned to the other students in the room.

Kloe was very nervous. She knocked on the door to the Proffesor's office and then she walked in. "Hi, I am Kloe Malfoy and I'm a first year. I do not get Arithmancy at all. Could you help me?" said Kloe to the Proffesor.

After greeting Varius with a small nod, suddenly remembering those flyers, Jake entered the office as they were called in. "Hello, Professor," he said with a slight smile. Standing a little ways behind Varius, Jake waited until the others were seen to. He was, of course, glad that his head of house hadn't noticed the whole fiasco where Jake had ended up falling off his chair in class, but now the time came where he kind of had to bring that up. Meh. Weren't too bad. At least MacShack was nice.

Professor Shackleton was so happy that there was a student observant enough to ask this question! She grinned, "A very insightful question, Tiberius. You don't actually have to pick out the parts of the description that apply to the physical, mental, or spiritual planes. What you do is take the totality of the information and apply it to each of those planes.

"As I mentioned in class, the Physical Transits reveal your physical well-being, as well as your experiences on the material/worldly plane at a particular time in your life. So if your transit says you're shy or inspired, you take that information and consider how it would apply to the material world. Perhaps being inspired might cause you to create a new product or service that the wizarding world can use and enjoy. In doing so, you also secure your future financial and have time to travel around the world. That all relates to the physical plane.

"But now say you want to consider the spiritual plane. This deals with your well-being, your growth, and your inner contentment. Let's take being inspired again - being inspired could give you a purpose in your life, thus making you feel happier about yourself and increasing your self-esteem.

"Do you see the distinction? It is all about the plane that you apply the information to."

I have not yet graded any of the homeworks, so I am not familiar with how you've done. Perhaps contact me later in the week and I may have finished grading it.

"As for points, there won't be a deduction of house points per se for incorrect answers, but only correct answers earn house points. So the maximum number of house points you can earn is fifteen, but that will require a 100 percent correct homework."

"Are you sure, dear? I honestly don't mind helping, especially when there seem to be a number of other students who also have questions. In fact, their questions might even be the same as yours and then they'd benefit from you asking. But if you'd rather ask your questions privately," and Macadrian's office was definitely not private at the moment, "then perhaps asking Chris might be a better idea. I don't think my office will be clearing out any time soon," she chuckled.

All Rayedem could do was listen. Of course the professor didn't mean to make him feel this way, but he realized that he'd been using "I'm a muggle-born" as an excuse to almost everything. He nodded in understanding.

"I see. Thank you very much, professor. I'll be sure to check." he said. Looking at the professor and smiling, he added, "Excuse me." he gave another nod and a smile, then turned away and walked out of the professor's office. He was determined that he'd do his best in every subject.

Tibi's brow was creased as Professor Shackleton began her explanation and he was chewing on his bottom lip. He was extra uncomfortable now that there were so many other students in the room. He was feeling embarrassed that he'd needed help so soon in the term.

Thinking hard, Tibi's face was scrunched, but when Shackleton began to give examples, his face lit up. "So.." he wanted to make sure this was right... "being shy, when I look at B for this year, could mean that people want to help me more and so that would apply to the physical plane, while being extra shy might also mean that I think differently or less of myself, which would be spiritual?"

Tibi thought he was beginning to understand. Maybe Arithmancy wouldn't be so hard, after all! "I think I'm getting it..." he hesitated. "It will probably make more sense when we've talked about the other planes?"

Alexandra blushed again and looked around at the other students gathered in the office. She was WAY too shy to ask questions in front of all of these people. "Oh thank you very much Professor, but I do believe I will find Chris. Thank you again" she said as she turned and hastily exited the office.

To the two students who were exiting her office, Macadrian replied hurried before they were out the door, "You're quite welcome. Stop back any time you need anything."

By the end of the next lesson, I bet most of your questions will be answered. If not, then feel free to come back to me, or even ask the question during the lesson, and we'll work it out together."

Hearing another knock upon her door, Macadrian called out, "Come on in!" She thought happily to herself, First week of term and my office already has a revolving door. I don't think the thing has stayed shut for more than ten seconds at a time! Oh, I do love the beginning of term.

With a smile, Macadrian replied about the common room, "Well, I don't doubt that! Hopefully though, it will be nothing that the prefects can't handle." But knowing Hogwarts, there is always that chance...

Back to reality. Personal reasons, eh? "Your career path doesn't need Ancient Runes? What exactly is your desired career path?" Macadrian inquired. She wouldn't normally let students drop subjects in their third year, as they often changed their career options frequently at this age. He may think he doesn't need Runes today, but tomorrow could be another story!

"And Ancient Runes is a very worthwhile and important subject. All the subjects we teach are worthwhile and important, though some may be more beneficial toward your future than others. Be careful of the words you choose. Calling Runes unimportant could make Professor Lupa very disheartened. And I, too, hold the subject rather dear to my heart." She knew he didn't mean anything by it, but being tactful is a lesson all students need at one point or another.

Professor Shackleton was surprised to see another new face in her office. "I can certainly help you, dear. Why don't you have a seat and let me draw you up a parchment for us to work on." Macadrian reached into the top drawer of her desk and pulled out a piece of scrap parchment. She wrote:

Quote:
K (2): age 0-2
A (1): 2-3
P (7): 3-10
L (3): 10-13
I (9): 13-22
N (5): 22-27
S (1): 27-28
K (2): 28-30
I (9): 30-39
She handed the parchement to the girl and explained, "Each letter has a number equivalent, which you had already found. When calculating the Transits, each letter in the first name also represents a Physical Transit that last the same number of years as the letter/number conversion shows. So the 'K' Physical Transit lasted for two years, because K is equal to 2. The first letter of your name starts from birth and then you count the years up based on the number equivalents as you read the letters across. Do you follow so far?"

"Hello, Mr. Upstead. What can I do for you today?" Macadrian was always curious when Jake was coming to her. It was usually for an entertaining reason at least.

"I'm looking forward to the next lesson, Professor!" He hopped down off his chair and waved as he made his way out of the office. "Thanks for you help!"
