She walked into the potions room geared up for another eventful lesson. Or at least she hoped up. She fingered the necklace that Ella had given her for her birthday as she was dismayed to see that she was the first one to class.

Via happily entered the potions room. She was surprised to see a Slytherin girl inside. She smiled at her. They're the first ones inside. She found a seat at the front of the room and comfortably plopped herself.

Shivering madly, with chattering teeth, Kiri entered the Potions classroom. She'd gotten into a snowball fi-, no, a snowball war, on her way back to the school from the grounds, and the participating students didn't seem to have minded who they were aiming at, so Kiri, innocent bystander or not, had been hit with a barrage of snowy projectiles. Strands of her wet hair were hanging into her face now (the more devious ones trickling icy water down her neck and spine). She couldn't feel her nose, which looked decidedly pink and was probably ready to fall off at any moment, and melting snow was seeping into her bag.

She cast a dark look around. Not too many of her classmates had appeared yet, so Kiri took out her wand and began drying herself and her possessions - luckily most of them hadn't been touched by the water yet, but... Yes, she grimaced, her notebook containing the last three Arithmancy lessons' calculations had apparently soaked up most of it...
Grumbling to herself in a low voice, she tried separating the pages.

For once the headmaster seemed to be on time. He strode into the classroom well before his entire class had arrived. "Good morning!" he smiled at those who actually were there. "Everything going well?"

Kiri looked up as the headmaster walked in. "Good morning, professor," she replied, before returning to the mess of her Arithmancy notes. She'd managed to salvage a few sheets, but the rest, she could see, was too wet and basically beyond repair. Oh, well. She'd have to copy someone else's notes then later to make sure she had it for the end-of-year exams.
And with the teacher in the room, the lesson would probably start soon.
Kiri crumbled the paper (although it was far too soggy to... crumple) and stuffed it into her bag unceremoniously, wondering idly what they would be doing today.

"We're going to mix things up today. Usually I do the lecture portion at the beginning, but I think we'll just jump right into the brewing. How does that sound?" he asked with a grin, knowing that he'd have preferred action to lecture when he was a student (and even now).

"So, I'm going to post the instructions on the board and you'll have to follow them very closely. The swelling solution isn't too difficult to brew, but you must be very careful not to get any of it on you. Ready?"

He idn't wait for an answer; he just tapped the blackboard with his wand and the instructions appeared. "I'll be around to assist you if you need it. Any ingredients not in your personal stores can be found on my desk."

Kiri began rummaging in her bag. After a moment's grabbing, she unearthed her Potions storage box. She put it down on her table and opened it. Let's see now... Houndstongue, ginger roots, rattlesnake fang, a carefully labelled glass vial containing dragon saliva... Lionfish quills? Kiri lined up the ingredients next to her cauldron and rechecked her box, but no luck. With a sigh, she got up and walked to the front of the classroom.
"Umm, Professor Bontecou?" she said, a little timidly. "I don't think I have any lionfish quills left." She pointed at the desk. "Can I take some of those?"

"Of course you can. Just help yourself," Professor Bontecou replied to Miss Starstalker. "Feel free to take whatever you need. I know a lot of times we brew potions with ingredients that aren't common stock for students."

Natka read the ingredients on the board, and checked to see what she had in her bag. There was houndstongue (which she would have to grind), some ginger, a rattlesnake fang, a small vial of dragon saliva and...

She seemed to have the same problem as the second-year Slytherin. Sighing, Natka got up and walked to the front of the class to get herself some lionfish quills.

"Thank you," Kiri said with a tiny smile. She removed three of the lionfish quills and returned to her desk, where she put them next to the rest of the ingredients. Next came filling the cauldron. Measuring carefully, she poured water into it until the surface had reached the small engraved 500ml line.
Kiri stepped back. There, she thought, and glanced at the blackboard.
Bring water to a slow boil... She took her wand and lit a fire below the cauldron.

It would take a few minutes for the water to start boiling, Kiri knew, so she took the time to reread Professor Bontecou's instructions. So the houndstongue came first, apparently. Stir clockwise 22 times...
As steam began to rise from her cauldron, she placed the ingredients on her table in the order they would be used, to make sure she would add the right piece of gooey creature remains.
Houndstongue first, she reminded herself again. She opened the little porcelain box containing houndstongues, or rather the powder that remained when one ground them, and, with the help of a spoon and her scales, removed half a gram. The water was boiling now, so it was time to go to work.

Kiri poured the houndstongue into the water, then took her wand and began stirring clockwise slowly, counting under her breath. Five, six, seven... The lionfish quills came next. They had to be grounded as well, right? Twelve, thirteen, fourteen... No, no, no, that was wrong! Kiri chastised herself. Lionfish quills whole, but the rattlesnake fang crushed. Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two! She put down her wand and grabbed the dish with the lionfish quills. They disappeared in the bubbling water, and Kiri was halfway through plunging her wand back into the potion to stir it some more when she remembered that she was not supposed to do that.

She looked at the blackboard hastily. It said to wait for about five minutes, and then her potion should change its colour to become dull yellow? With a sigh, Kiri put down her wand and pulled the box of rattlesnake fangs toward her. She fished one out and began crushing it. Soon her face was red and her hands aching - try as she might, she could not get the fang to crumble more than a few times!
She stepped back from her table, trying to catch Professor Bontecou's eye. "Professor! I think I need your help. I don't think I can get the rattlesnake fang any smaller. Do you... do you think this might be small enough? So that the potion still works, I mean," she added.

He caught that eye as he slowly walked around the room, weaving in and out of the tables in a pattern that seemed random, but if anyone had been looking from above and trailing a string behind him, it would appear to be a picture of a cow. "Let me see," he said, leaning over her desk after finally arriving there, his trail now running a line straight through his cow. He pushed his glasses back up his nose as they slid down with his downward glance. "Try using a heavier pestle. I have some if you don't. You should be able to just let the weight of it do the work."

Ana took some notes and started working.

So, water...500ml... slowly boil she poured the water into the cauldron and waited to boil... and waited...

When it was boiling she added the houndstongue, and stir it 22 times.

22 times?! Why not 20 or 25? 3 min after she finish stirring it twenty one... twenty two.

Then she added lionfish quills and waited 5 min.

5 min and yes that was dull yellow.
Next dragon saliva. dragon s...s...saliva.. okaayy she watched it on the surface and finally stink.

Now the rattlesnake fang. Ana crushed it until it was all dust and mixed with ground ginger and add it to the potion. And stir clockwise too.

After the 2 min she stopped and removed it from the fire trying not to burn herself.

More stir. There's a lot of stir for this potion.
After 10 more minutes she had almost finished.

Ana ladled the potion from the cauldron to the phials and labeled each one.

"Annndddd...Done! Woot!"

So where will we use this potion? Not in ourselves for sure... i hope... she thought

Kiri nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Professor. I'll try that." A sideways glance at her cauldron showed that, incredibly, her potion was turning yellow steadily, and she practically skipped over to the cupboards to find a heavier pestle. The shelves were full of pestles, so Kiri grabbed a heavy-looking one at random and hurried back to her cauldron.

Alright, now the dragon saliva, Kiri thought. The stopper on the glass vial was pushed in very deep, but after a few seconds' insistent pulling, she got it out. Very, very carefully, she let the vial hover over the boiling potion and tilted it. At first, the fluid didn't seem to want to come out, but Kiri resisted the urge to shake her hand or do anything equally stupid, and her patience paid off as a single drop of dragon saliva fell into the cauldron, where it dispersed and bopped on the surface of the yellow potion.

According to the instructions, Kiri would have to wait until the dragon saliva was gone before adding the next ingredient - or rather ingredients, she saw, as the crushed rattlesnake fang and sliced ginger roots were supposed to be mixed together beforehand. She picked up the heavy pestle and went to work on the fang again. The professor had been right! Wonderful! She could feel it break into smaller pieces beneath the pestle (not to mention the sickening sound whenever a larger chunk scraped along the inside of the mortar).
Twisting and turning the pestle ferociously, the rattlesnake fang had soon been reduced to a powdery substance. Although she was now sweating, Kiri allowed herself a satisfied smile as she pushed the bowl and pestle away and took her knife and the ginger roots.

The dragon saliva was almost gone, Kiri noticed, so she cut the ginger roots as fast as she could, nearly slicing off her left index finger in the process. She guessed that she could have cut the ginger a little neater, but there was no time - she pushed the cut-up roots into the bowl with the rattlesnake fang and added both ingredients to her potion. They splashed into the bubbling mixture. She took her wand again and began stirring.
Clockwise, right?

After what Kiri hoped was two minutes, she put out the fire and placed the cauldron on the table. Her arm was feeling strangely heavy and unresponsive, but nevertheless she duly resumed the stirring. Gradually the potion stopped boiling. Kiri's sweaty face dried.
She looked around. Most of her fellow students were also busy stirring the contents of their cauldrons, some with relaxed, some with anxious expressions on their faces.
With nothing else to do, the ten minutes seemed to last an hour, but finally Kiri was able to stop stirring and remove her wand.
She wasn't sure what the finished potion was supposed to look like, but she felt she'd done a reasonable job. She scooped up some of the potion, mindful of Professor Bontecou's warning not to touch it. After carefully corking the flask, she picked up her quill and wrote down her name on the label: Kiri Str Starstalker.
She was done!

Sweet! He really did mean it when he said they'd be jumping right to action with the potion. Quite exciting really, but wasn't it best to learn more about the potion before hand? And they could probably get more points with a lecture that had questions, but Melanie shrugged the thought off and decided she'd best get to work...

So Melanie rumaged around in her bag for some of the ingredients she'd begin with. houndstongue, some ginger, that should be enough for now. Firstly she pulled her wand from her pockets and set the cauldron in front of her, lazily using auguamenti to fill the pewter cauldron up and then she set it on some heat and stirring it around a bit as she waited on it to boil. All's going well so far. Hopefully it would stay that way.

Herminny was a little distraught to see the headmaster teaching potions bu was happy he wanted to get started with the fun part of the lsson right away.

Herminny then walked over to the potion masters desk and grabbed all the supplies she needed relieved cause frankly all she had on hand was the ginger and then the water and of course her couldron.

Herminny then returned to her desk and cpied down the instructions and got started on the potion.

1: Herminny took out her couldron and put it on the table and turned on the bunsen burner and waited for the water to come to a boil

2: Herminny aded the 0.5g of ground houndstoungue and sirred it 20 times counter clockwise as per instructions and the potion started to bubble and Herminny thought, this is so cool.

3:Herminny added the lionfish quils remembering not to stir.

4:Then she started to see the potion turn yellow and knew she was on the right track with potions and smled looking at her progress.

5:Herminny then added the dragon saliva thinking ewe as she saw it it drip into the potion and sit at the top then slowly sink into the potion.

6:Herminny then started to crush the rattlesnake fangs to a pulp, they were just so disgusting to her so that did not take long, then she added the crushed rattle snake fangs to her stores of ginger and stirred it clockwise for two minutes

7:Herminny then turned off the bunsen burner and continued to continuously stir the potion for another ten minutes slowing down toward the end cause her hand started to hurt

8:Herminny then took out her laddle and scooped up some of her potion and put itinto a phial and labled it with her name and and the kind of potion,Swelling Solution and handed it in.

She copied down the potion in her potions book. It was a red leather bound book with her name stamped on the front. She loved potions and wrote all of them down.

She added the water to her cauldron and then used her wand to start the fire and turn it up on high to get her cauldron to a rolling boil. She looked around the room as she waited. It seemed like Kiri was having a bit of trouble with her potion, but the headmaster was helping her. She went and gathered up all the other ingredients and a morter and pedestal before the water started boiling. You could ruin a perfectly good potion by running around trying to collect all your things.

When the water started to boil, she added the houndstounge and started to stir slowly counter clock wise. She counted, 1..2..3...and on and on till she reached 22. She pushed in the lionfish and resisted the urge to stir the solution. She pointed at her muggle timer and it set itself at 5:00 minutes and started counting down.

When the timer started going off the checked on the color of her solution. It was a dull yellow. YES! She rocked at potions, it should be illegal to be this good, she thought to herself. She took her little dropped and squeezed out dragon saliva. She wanted to know how pond you had to pee in to get the job of collecting dragon saliva. That had to be the worst job in the world.

She sat down to watch the saliva sink to the bottom of her cauldron.

Twilight carefully wrote down the instructions from the board into her potions journal. She was glad she had been able to sit right up front where she could actually see the board clearly:

* Allow solution to slowly boil and after about 5 minutes, the solution should be a dull yellow.
* Add dragon saliva. It will remain on the surface for a few minutes. Wait for it to sink before adding the next ingredient.
* Crush the rattlesnake fang and mix with ground ginger before adding them to the potion. Stir clockwise for 2 minutes.
* Remove from the fire and continue to stir for an additional 10 minutes.
* Ladle into phials, label, & hand in.
Then she carefully pulled out her ingredient bag, taking out her jars of houndstongue and ground ginger root. She went up to the desk and got the lionfish quills, dragon saliva and rattlesnake fang. She put her pewter cauldron on the table added the water, and then tried to start the fire underneath. It would not start at all, she was close to tears.....

So while she waited she took the rattlesnake fang and worked on crushing it up, this she knew how to do as she helped her grandmother often during the summer. She tried to get the fire started again..... nothing happened, no one was sitting next to her so she raised her hand....

She added her rattlesnake fang to her morter and and ground it up. Then she thinly sliced her ginger root and added to the morter. She quickly dumped in all in her cauldron and quickly started stirring it slowly for 2 long minutes. She liked brewing potions that bubbled and leapt out of the cauldron and had the strangest smells wafting up, but this one was just simmering away happily.

She put out her fire and continued to stir her potion. It looked like it was supposed to. When her 10 minutes was up she ladled some of her potion in a vial that she marked with her name and house. She walked up to the front desk and added her potion to the others.

Because her brother was so obsessive about potioneering, Celandine had copious quantities of every one of the ingredients necessary in her kit, she even had a pewter cauldron already. Cela tied her hair back and fixed it in place with a few quick charms. She gave the ginger a good whiff and smiled to herself before casting aguamenti to fill up her cauldron. How cool was it that she'd learned that in class last term?

She double checked the water quantity, finding she had to siphon a little off to make it an even 500ml. While it was slowly coming to the boil, Cela began to prepare her other ingredients, sorting them into little bowls as she did so. And yep, she was humming.

She ground up the houndstongue first, being meticulous with her weighing before letting the pestle do its thing. Trying to remember the little tips and things her brother constantly advised her on was kinda hard when the sound of the pestle and mortar made such a perfect accompaniment to her humming. Oh! Thats right, she wasn't supposed to do it too fast incase any of the ingredients were knocked loose from the mortar. And she was supposed to double check the measures in between each step. Mmmmkaaay. Cela weighed the houndstongue again, came up a little short and had to crush some more, noting that some had indeed been swept out of the mortar in her ministrations.

The water was boiling happily now, almost rivaling Cela and her happy humming. She added the houndstongue and panicked for a moment when she realised she hadn't grabbed anything to stir wi... oh she'd use her wand. Celandine stirred the mixture 22 times clockwise, attempting to keep her movements steady and sure. She added the three lionfish quills and while she waited for it to boil, began preparing the ingredients for the next step.

She cleaned her mortar and pestle first, then while she was reading the instructions and ingredients, Cela noticed a discrepancy and raised her hand, "Excuse me, Sir? The ingredient list says the ginger is to be thinly sliced but the instructions say that the crushed rattlesnake fang ought to be mixed with the ground ginger, is that important? Are we supposed to slice it, then crush it? Or just crush it, or just slice it?" Cela paused, "Does doing one or the other or both increase the potency of the final potion? Or does it just make the room smell more gingery?"

Daniel was listening to the Professor very patiently. He was unease with the new hairstyle he had managed to pop-out after that detention. He then looked at the board as the Professor tapped it and he reads the instructions.

Quote:
The Swelling Solution
Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* houndstongue (ground; 0.5g)
* ginger (roots, thinly sliced; 5g)
* lionfish quills (whole; 3)
* rattlesnake fang (crushed; 1)
* dragon saliva (1 drop)

Instructions:

* Add houndstongue and stir 22 times in a steady clockwise motion.
* Add lionfish quills but, do not stir.

Daniel then opened his store and looked for the ingridients.

water - check
houndstongue - hmmm check
ginger - check but almost empty
lionfish quills - hmm oh oh I have none of those.
rattlesnake fang - There is one here
and lastly, Dragon sa-liva - which is one of my store
said Daniel in his mind...

He then approached the teacher's table and grabbed some of the necessary ingredients and walked towards his station.

He was a not so avid potions student but he never let that hinder him from getting high marks.

He then get his pewter cauldron and started putting the water in... He opened the flame and waited for the water to boil, which is the time for him to start preparing his ingredients.

He first took the houndstongue and grinds it.

He then sliced the ginger as thin as he can possibly get.

He just left the lionfish quill as it is... Because the potion requires it to be whole... He then grinds the rattlesnake fang with his new mortar and pestle... And then set the Dragon saliva aside.

After preparing the ingredients, he noticed his water was up to a boil already, he then added his houndstongue and stirred it steadily for 22 times on a clockwise manner.

Then he dumped the lionfish quill but didn't mixed it. and waited until he saw a tinge of yellow dullness in it before putting the Dragon saliva in. He waited for it to sank to the whole potion. While he waited, he hums a tune of some sort.

Whoa! Daniel was totally mystified. He raised his hand "Professor, should we crush the sliced ginger or put it as sliced?"

"Ah..." he answered them and then went up to the board to study the instructions. He took his glasses off and squinted up at the text. Then, he put them back on and turned back to the class. "Excellent observation. I must have miswrote the instructions as you should be using them thinly sliced. Grinding the ginger may increase the potency as well as the aroma in the room. However, when I say it increases the potency I don't mean that you'll cause greater swelling, just that the irritation accompanying it will be greater than if you merely sliced it. Any idea what effect slicing the ginger thicker might do to the potion?"

"Well slicing it helps revealing the flavor. I think it causes rash, heartburn in the esophagus, well and...swelling at the abdominal area." she said raising her hand
