| | Muggle Studies Lesson 2 - Halloween
As you enter the Muggle Studies classroom, you notice that everything is decorated in a rather festive way. The walls are decorated with such items as spider webs and spiders, vampires, monsters, bats, skeletons, tombstones and other scary items. The desk itself is the centerpiece , with a large pumpkin sitting in the middle of it. The pumpkin has been carved out so that it reveals a scary face, and there is a candle inside it which provides illumination, the light flickering on and off in a rather mysterious way. On the floor beside the desk you notice lots of large grocery size paper bags, but the professor shies you away from these, pushing them aside as if they are a secret. There is also a small broomstick, a rather primitive looking black witches' hat (not the modern sort, but the somewhat old fashioned muggle concept of what a witches' hat should look like), and a picture magazine showing children and adults clad in lots of interesting and colorful costumes. There is also a stack of black and orange colored textbooks towards the front which Professor Dumont invites you to take one of - USA WEEKEND Magazine.
Take a look around, grab a book, have a seat and the lesson will get started soon! |

Anna raised her hand and said, "Peasant women wore what is perceived as the traditional witch hat."

Camira sighed as she flipped through her textbook, before raising her hand. "Was it peasant women, sir?" She was pretty sure that's what she'd read earlier. Oh, how she hated Muggles and their stupid customs that she didn't get. What in the heck was a peasant woman anyway.

"Very good," Antonio said. "This is definitely a sharp group. Pesant women were the original wearers of the so-called witches' hat. Now, who knows how black cats were regarded by the muggles? What did they think that black cats represented? Only one more question after this, so I won't be keeping you all much longer!"

Cats have been considered by many to be spiritual animals. They have been worshiped in many societies and are thought to have the ability to sense good and bad spirits. Western superstitions would have us believed that black cats have special powers, that they can represent spirits or even incarnated humans, thereby linking black cats to occultism."

"All of you did very well today," Antonio smiled. "I have one last question, though, and that is about the broomstick. Who can tell me what are a few of the myths which the muggles associate with the broomstick? I will give a point for each correct answer, then I'll assign homework."

Witches have been associated with brooms for centuries. Often witches are depicted riding them across the night sky with a black cat on the end. A more reasonable explanation may be that Halloween festivities happened during the rainy season. Women used their brooms to vault over the puddles and large amounts of water. As well, during the Witch's Sabbath, they performed a jumping dance while straddling the broom, using it to vault higher. It was thought that the higher the jumps, the higher the crop growth because in ancient time, the broom was thought to symbolize fertility."

The name broomstick comes from the Saxon wica, meaning wise one. It was thought to aide in purification and cleansing. The negative energies would be swept out of a person's dwelling, leaving it clear. This is what muggle's who were wannabe witch's would do", she said, finding this amusing.

Anna raised her hand and said, "Witches were thought to have used their brooms to hide their wands. Superstitious people believe witches fly through chimneys in order to terrorize people. The image of witches flying off on their magic broomstick correlates to their use of magical flying ointments during their divinatory endeavors. After the witches covered themselves with the ointment they would lay down by the fireplace in order to keep safe and warm while on their journeys. The symbol of this flight, the witch's broom (also known as a besom), has historical associations with a variety of plants."

There were a lot of things by which witches were associated with brooms. Meredith raised her left hand, "Witches are often shown on pictures riding brooms. Sometimes, they have a black cat also sitting on the end. Also, an old corn dance, a fertility rite usually done during the full moon, involved jumping over a stick or broom. Other stories say witches hid wands by disguising them as brooms." she answered.
