Default L1: Beginner and Remedial Arithmancy

Professor Frost entered his classroom and tidied up the room a bit, careful to not make it too clean and tidy. He hated rooms that didn’t look just a little used or lived in. He put the appropriate books atop each desk, and moved on to his own desk, clearing it of clutter and laying out the same volume as the kid’s. He sat down in the chair behind the desk and waited for his students to arrive with his feet resting atop the edge of the desk. (OOC: This lesson will be open for the duration of however long it takes to go over the material taught last term and for everyone who wishes to participate to do so - meaning this will more than likely be a bit of a slower-paced lesson than usual, lasting a day or two. This material must be learned before the other lessons, or you may become lost and/or confused. Everyone who was here last term and who already know this material are more than welcome and are encouraged to attend this lesson as well as newcomers. =])

Ryan walks slowly inside the classroom. This wasn't is usual favorite subjects but he never had troubles understand it. Smiling gently at the professor, he walks toward the second row and sit. Putting quill, ink and book on his desk, he waited to see if other fellow students would show up soon.

The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.

Ariana walked into the classroom a smile perched on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She loved Arithmancy it was one of her favorite classes. Finding a seat near the front of the room she sat down and nodded to Professor Onyx, ready for the lesson. She shut down her mental block so she could concentrate more on studying and less on everyone's emotions, and besides their emotions weren't anything she could handle, not after last summer.

Wiping the thought from her mind she took out her quill, parchments and books and looked up expectantly.

Daphne trotted into Arithmancy, looking a little tired. Classes were in full gear, and she was feeling the strain. She found a seat and dropped her head onto the desk. She got out parchment, quills, and her book. She went to start her notes, when she realized she forgot to get out her ink. She reached in to her bag and pulled out a color-changing container, which was her ink. Ready, she thought to herself.

Kennedy sauntered into the arithmancy classroom, grateful for a review of last term's material. Although Kennedy had studied arithmancy on her own over the summer holiday, she always appreciated having an expert nearby to ensure that she was deriving things correctly. Kennedy found a desk in the middle of the classroom and took a seat. She began removing parchment, her textbook, and a self-inking quill from her bag and set them up neatly on her desk. She awaited the start of the review.

“Good Afternoon, class.” Onyx said, returning smiles and nods. “Today, we will be going over the basics of Arithmancy beginning with something called the ‘Core’, which is made up of the most important numbers of an Arithmatical chart. But first, we must go over some of the fundamentals of Arithmancy.” He announced in a slightly monotonous tone. “Now then, Arithmancy was founded approximately ten-thousand years ago by the Greek Philosopher and Wizard, Pythagoras around the same time-period as mathematics was founded. This philosopher theorized that the world, as well as the entire universe, was built upon the powers of numbers and that everything can be expressed in numbers, to which each provides it’s own ‘vibration’; these vibrations in synchrony to universal vibrations, patterns and cycles. And so, with this theory all things, including names, words, birth dates and birthplaces are able to be reduced to numbers in order to determine personalities, characteristics, destinies and even fortunes of individuals.” He finished, flicking his wand at the board to which these notes were copied. “It’s been said that Arithmancy is the precursor to Divination, and thus would mean that Arithmancy is among the oldest method to predicting the future.” He interjected before continuing on a different note. Now, what exactly is Arithmancy? Some of you might be wondering... Well, to put it as simply as possible Arithmancy is the study of the magical, or ‘occult’ meanings and properties of numbers and their influence on human life.” He flicked his wand at the board and once more copied what he said to it.

“So, who here can tell me what the core is made up of?” He asked with a smile, hoping someone had taken the time to glance through their textbook.

Eliza fixed her rather messy half-done bun and ran her fingers through teh flowing pieces of hair she had forgotten to put up. She took out her Black and golden Eagle feath quill and began to scribble down notes onto a peice of spare parchment. Looking up at Onyx for a moment as she moved the feather of her quil down to her sandal-covered feet and began to tickle her own foot in thought. She was rather bad at Arithmancy but fonud it interesting. That and her mother said that if she didn't go to even one lesson, she'd be getting a hurl of Cruciatus Curses at her. She listened to Onyx for a moment before doing what he said and then beginning to scribble down her date of birth in the Destiny rectangle.

Ariana smiled, glad she hhad gotten points for her house and went to work. She folded up her parchment inthe correct manner and went on to find her Destiny number. She already knew how to do it, but it was always good to get extra practise in any case. First she rwote out her full birthdate:

Onyx checked over her parchment and calculated the problem quickly in his mind. "You have everything right, except master numbers - eleven and twenty-two shouldn't be condensed, so your Destiny number is eleven." He said with a smile before rounding everyone's desks and checking their answers as well. (OOC: You did. =])

"Very well done everyone, your totals are all correct."


“Right then, so lets move on to the Heart, Personality and Expression numbers. To get these numbers, you will need to write out your entire given name, and use the chart soon to be upon the board and assign each letter the number it falls under on this chart.” He said, flicking his wand.“Consonants going underneath the letter, vowels going above.” He added.

“I would at this time like to say that there is some controversy amongst Arithmancers about whether or not the “Y” should be counted as a vowel or a consonant. So with this in light, how we will be counting it will be determined on how it is pronounced within a name. If it acts as a consonant as in “Yolande” we will be using it as such, but if it acts as a vowel as in “Holley” then a vowel it will be counted as...”

“Now, to find what your Heart number is you will be adding the vowels that are found within your name, like so…” He said with yet another flick of his wand at the chalkboard.

Amelia looked over at Ariana, with this bored look. She had done this last term, and seeing how arithmancy was her favorite class, she already understood the basic concepts. But since that's what the class was doing, she would not miss out on the opportunity to earn points for her house.

Ginny wrote everything off the board, wow, she loved this stuff it was so interesting but since maths was never ginnys fave subject, she found it a bit frustrating. She saw ameilia out of the corner of her eye the girl rolled her eyes, ginny felt the same way but desided to consintrate and get this rite
