It may be a big surprise to some that Professor Rae is holding class today, especially considering that her children have been taken from the school to places that are unknown. She's been spotted all over the school in tears, but here the door is open and the room is ready for class.
Once inside, however, you are quick to discover that Professor Rae is not holding class in the traditional sense. The desks are pushed back around the room, and there is a nothing of note... until you see the highly polished dark wood box sitting on Rae's desk. The lid is slightly ajar.
There is a note on the board:
Dark Creature Independent Study
Feel free to explore the Dark Creatures miniature collection bought for me several years ago. Each of the small figurines is a perfect working replica of a Dark Creature. Take time to look them over and take lots of notes. Using your notes and your textbook, please list the following for three of the creatures:
1) Name the creature
2) List the MoM rating
3) Give a physical description (as full as possible)
4) List one possible way to defeat this creature (as full as possible).
Extra credit if you include a drawing or sketch (you must do this YOURSELF).
Due: August 26, 2007
As you push back the lid to the box, you find 12 velvet lined compartments. Many of them are empty, obviously holding animals you aren't going to have to deal with today. Of the ones that are filled, you see the following creatures:
* A spider-like creature with a thick furry body and eight hairy legs
* A long acid green snake that keeps clicking it's fangs at you
* A fairy-like creature with dark hair and shiny, beetle-like wings
* A creature that looks like a monkey with scales
* A tortoise with a jewelled shell
* A winged creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a horse

Antwone walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts class excitedly with his beech wand in his left hand. Can't wait to see what Professor Rae has got in store for us. When Antwone looked around the classroom to see all the chairs and desk pulled aside he almost jumped. Yay! We'll be dueling! I just dueled yesterday with Sho! But Antwone's urge to jump and the smile on his face were wiped away when he did not see Professor Rae anywhere. Substitute? Then, in the middle of the classroom Antwone could see a group of students looking around a box which read of instructions. What's this rubbish? No dueling? Independent studies!? Argh!
Antwone stuffed his wand back into his robes and looked utterly downcast. Must be because of the twins. Antwone had been doing his best to find them on his free time but they seemed to be no where within the castle or its grounds.

Alicia walked into the classroom wth her bag on one shoulder. Looking at the board, she sees professor rae's note. She then walks over to the box and looks at the creatures... hmm she thinks she recognizes a doxy and a grindylow but isnt sure. She pulls ou her copy of Magical Beasts and selects one of the creatures to study.
Then, as she turns around to select a chair, she sees that a boy is also in the classroom.
"Oh, hello"

She recognised a model of a _________ and took out her notebook, writing down the main features of the creature. It was beautiful model, all shiny and very detailed. She wondered whether the models were actually the real creatures having been shrunk...

Ryan sprinted into the classroom, skidded on the floor as she flew in through the door and crashed into the wall.
She noticed Jackie, picked herself up and bounded over to her.
'I didn't think the Headmistress would be here,' she said slowly, her dark eyes full of sadness. 'Do you want to work with me?'.
She looked over at the huge spiders. 'Wow...he's...eurgh...but this seems quite easy. Looks like we have a _________, to name a few'. This was where her knowledge of animals came into play. She took out a rainbow coloured notebook, and hastily scribbled down some notes on what she thought was the Acromantula.
ooc - Yes, I knew I used to write in pink but Ryan's hair is now blue  .

Ariana walked in looking as if she'd been crying, which she had been, but not for any particaular reason. Her eyes were droopy and it looked as if she would never get a good nights sleep again, yet she was a trooper. She looked around, surprsised thre was actually a DADA class, then read the board and knew the professor wouldn't be here.
Walking over to the front of the room ,she took out her notebook and quickly scribbled down the work, yawning slightly as she did so. Putting her book away, she looked iside the box on the desk and jumped back, shaking as she saw a box full of dangerous creatures. Looking again, she picked up a perfect model. Looking on the borad again, she realized it was A tortoise with a jewelled shell.
"Yes, this seems like the best one." she muttered to herself, before wakling over towards the far corner of the room, slid down its wall and began to pull out her parchment, quill, and textbook, knowing this would be an easy class for her.

Rapunzel strolled into Defense Against the Dark Arts, excited and hoping for another practical lesson. She was disappointed, however, when she read the note on the trunk and examined the magical creatures within. She was most interested in the one, but another student was looking at it, so she took out the tiny model spider-thing instead. Then she strolled over to a desk and took out some parchment and quills to begin her notes.

Jackie blushed even harder.
"Somehow I doubt that... Flanella? Where's that name from? All I'm getting is flannels here..." she replied, tapping her head.
"Although, it does sound nice... Flanella the thingy, saving the world from mutant sofas everywhere!"
Jackie poked the thingy's wing and realised it was very thin, so she noted this down.

Syarah walked into the classroom only to find that the headmistress was not there. Hrrrmmm... independent study of the dark creatures, she thought, as she read the board. This should be good. She always found studying creatures of magical world was far more interesting than studying the digestive system of rabbits in the muggle school. She took a look of the small figures. 'I dunno....well, actually I do. When I was younger, and Dad wasn't so jealous, he used to tell me stories about Mum, and my favourite cuddly toy to take to bed was this little rabbit she made out of a flannel, in a little pink dress. We called her Flanella, and it's one of the only things I have left that is actually proof Mum ever existed....I had my memory wiped by accident when I was six, and lost any memory before that, so basically, I never met my mother. I brought Flanella with me, and I keep her in my suitcase,' Ryan smiled sadly, wishing she could remember anything about her mother. 'And then Dad started going on about how "I was always her favourite", and he started saying that she had loved me more than she loved her, and..he took away all the photos, everything..except Flanella. I guess it was just the first name that came into my head'.
Ryan turned away suddenly, trying to hide the tears that were forming in her teal eyes. 'Let's move onto the other thingy,' she suggested, trying to change the subject. She couldn't believe she had been so stupid - what would her father say if he found out? Her hair faded to a dismal brown, with some grey streaks.

Jackie patted Ryan on the arm comfortingly, the realising she wanted to move on, started taking notes on the other thingy.
"I love this model, it's got lvoely black feathers... I like black feathers... hence my black owl and black cat," Jackie smiled, wishing she could take Kippers to class with her. What no one else knew was, Jackie always carried her pygmy puff, Zoe, around in her pocket. She wasn't supposed to take pets to class, but Zoe was so cute and tiny Jackie was afraid she'd get lost if she left her in the Dormitory. Zoe let out a little squeak from her robe pocket. Jackie inconspicuously stroked her while pretending to examine the snakey model.

"Oh good," said Jackie, relieved. "It's Zoe," she whispered. "I can't leave her in the Dorm, she's too cute!" Jackie took Zoe out of her pocket and showed her to Ryan. Her purple fluff was extremely puffy today...
Jackie put Zoe down next to the thingy model. Zoe stuck her tongue out at the Doxy then squeaked and ran away to hide behind the other thingy. Jackie giggled and compared the body parts of the other thingy.

Excelsior recognized most of the miniature creatures, and he thought the snake was an ashwinder at first. On closer inspection, he realized it was not. He went over and touched it thoughtfully.
It must be stressful for Headmistress Rae to be teaching while she is dealing with this terrible situation, he thought to himself. He couldn't understand what she was doing here at all and his heart went out to her. He wished there was something he could say to her, but he couldn't think of anything.

Laylee looked at each model carefully. She'd never seen creatures like this before, well in person anyway! She'd read all about them!She quickly noted there shape, movement, and color. Then she watched and wrote down their behavior to all the people surrounding them! She decided not to touch any of them. They were dark creatures and each had a dark ability. She heard a squeak beside her.. Laylee knew that squeak. She looked over at Jackie and was sure she saw Zoes purple face peak out of her owners pocket! Then Jackie took her out to play the creatures.
"Hey jackie, maybe you shouldnt let her out in this class, I mean she could get hurt!" Laylee had grown attached to Zoe over the last few days and was planning on getting a pygmy puff for her to play with the next time she went to hogsmede!

'How can you pick that up?' she asked, her hair changing to a bright green. 'It's....a snake. That's worse than the Clabbert!'. She decided to see if she could name everything. 'We already know the Doxy, the Hippogriff and the Clabbert...that spider's probably an Acromantula, I think our little tortoise friend is a Fire Crab, and the snake - Jackie, if it's what I think it is, just be glad that it isn't real. A basilisk...one used to live in Hogwarts, you know. It wouldn't be an Ashwinder, because I thought that at first, but Newt Scamander says that they're harmless - only one rating above "Boring" in Fantastic Beasts, you know?'. Ryan scribbled that down as she wrote, her tongue sticking out in concentration.

'It's not the mouth you need to worry about, Jackie,' she commented. 'But it isn't real, so surely it can't hurt. Just....don't look it in the eyes, okay?'.
She herself didn't want to take any chances. She peered into it's eyes, clutched her throat and fell dramatically to the floor.

Jackie burst into fits of giggles as Ryan dramatuically faked her own death. She put the snakey thing down, still avoiding the fangs. Zoe was squeaking at the snakey thing so she put the snake back in it's box.
"Ok, it's gone now... for now..." Jackie faked an evil laugh and pretended to jump on Ryan's "dead" body.
Still giggling, she picked up the model spider ting and examined the eight, beady eyes. They swivelled in every direction, creeping her out slightly. She noted their movement down on her parchment.
