You enter the classroom to be greeted by the instructions on the blackboard:

Quote:

Ancient Runes In-Class Exam (Open Book)

Instructions: Construct a string of five runes, and write down the effects that the string will have. Keep in mind the characteristics and effects of each rune and what might happen if the effects were combined with other runes. You may invert or reverse the runes as you choose.

This exam is worth a maximum of 50 points.

Quote:

  • You are allowed to refer to your textbook and any notes you've made on Ancient Runes.
  • You are to work on your own.
  • You may ask Professor Opteryx questions regarding the exam, as long as they aren't on the lines of 'so what does this and this do?' This exam is an excercise for you to find out. Don't be too worried about what the right answer is--just write what you think will happen with your string of runes.
  • All papers are due on June 19th at 9 pm PST.
  • Runes are provided here: http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ancient_runes/

Transt McFee entered the classroom and seated himself by a table. When reading what was written on the blackboard he wished that he had payed more attention at class. He shook his head and then lifted his arm. "Uhm, Can I ask a question Professor?"

Backslash 06-16-2006 07:36 PM

"Go on," Professor Opteryx said, walking over to the student.

Black-haired girl playing with quill while staring blankly at the blank parchment, to be redundant, drifted to wonderland as she tried to figure out the assigment as if it was about taking a white bunny out from a galant hat. A magic card trick might be a more accurate metaphor, actually.

Realizing she had just managed to draw some circle in the corner, Margo McBeth fumbled for her book on runes "Oswald the Runemaker" and picked her runes by dropping her finger over the page with her eyes closed. She had http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/alg.gif, http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ken.gif, http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/per.gif, http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/geb.gif and http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/dag.gif, which she actually choose... and the actual work to do.

She raised her hand and addressed the professor before he was done with this boy, "Professor Opteryx, should we lay our parchment here for you to take when we are finished or do we approach you at the desk to deliver it?" [ooc: aka, post here or PM, Mr Backslash? bah, pity I didn't get a class instead of the final exam, too little interaction =P]

Backslash 06-17-2006 05:46 PM

"When time's up I'd like you to hand them in at my desk so I can look over it," Opteryx answered cheerfully.

(ooc: Post your answers here in the thread, as if you were writing it in class. You're free to RP your character's actions as they work.)

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 06-18-2006 11:04 PM

Margo lowered her sight and hand after the answer, quill in same raised hand. If she remembered correctly, some runes could be placed so they symbolized an opposite effect and the runes magic could cancel each other, though the professor didn't mention how. Guess work here. Alright. Margo swirled the quill on her hand. Ready, steady, go!

She inscribbed fast and fervently as if her life depended of it. Though the speed of her hand didn't reflect on her facial expression.

In the Paper, Margo wrote:

Chosen Runes: Gifu, Pertho, Dagaz, Algiz and Kenaz. Pertho will be placed upside down so it's element, water, does not interfeer with the other runes of elements fire and air (opposite, air and fire work alongside, like it is with Dagaz). Pertho which is upside down would then mean "revealing secrets".

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/alg.gif = Algiz / Elhaz / Yr
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ken.gif = Kenaz / Kaunaz/ Kauno
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/per.gif = Pertho / Perth
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/geb.gif= Gifu / Gyfu / Gebo
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/dag.gif = Dagaz

If Dagaz+Algiz+Kenaz = Luck Protection (against?) Fire, then, in the given order, the string of words would read "Parnership Trust(=Given Truth) give Luck Protection against Fire".

Margo paused and considered the runes...

But as well could mean "Fire Protects" or "Protect the Fire". And was the strict order of no relevance, then it could read "Fire Reveals Secret" or "Protect from Revealing Secrets" (though it would make more sense it was "Protect Secret") or "Revealing Secrets Luck Charm". Or if we disregard Pertho then it would be a luck amulet for partnership protection from fire/by fire. It would be left ambigious as it is.

Notice we use Kenaz in the most basic meaning "fire" but the runes could be read differently and mean "protection against enlightment" as well as "enlightment protection", between others. We use Partnership in the general meaning of Love.

Dagaz could also mean a change of direction. And Pertho is a luck charm too, so backwards it could give bad luck; it's therefore better to put them side by side. You balance "bad luck with love" with "good luck in protection from fire". (Or the good luck of Dagaz could be put at the end of the setence to anulate the bad luck in everything else.)

Then it's the issue of the order the runes are cast. We should give it the given order for runecasting in horizontal writing (though there shouldn't be too much of a difference in vertical writing).

An alternative for a linear string of words would read: Algiz+Kenaz+Pertho+Dagaz+Gifu. This is because it would read like a common sentence: vb/adj + noun + vb + adj/adv + noun, and get a similar meaning to the first, which is what we are aiming for. The reading would be something like "Protection of/against Fire Reveals Secrets with Lucky Partnership/with Luck AND a Partner."

Margo stopped writing and scratched the side of her head with her quill hand, unwittingly sprinkling ink over her hair, though it was not evident since both things were black. Point being, she was confusing herself.

Note on Order: However if we use the Field formation instead, I would put Fire in past-right, (Reveal) Secret in present-center, Partnership in future-left, Protection as issue-near and outcome-far the Good Luck.

If we use the Runic Cross formation we miss a Rune. So Fire is past, Partnership the future, near issue is still Protection, Reveal Secret either the present or the challenge and casting GoodLuck for the outcome.

There's not enough Runes for The Quest of Truth and the Three Lifetime cast is purely Divinatory. Any case, the results are because, of course, this is not Divination, I actually choose what each rune should represent what in my life.

Should she write something else? It looked pretty confusing as it was and she got the impression nothing she could add would help the reading be any more accurate than this.

hermygirl 06-19-2006 12:23 PM

Hermy walked into the class and carefully read the instructions as she sat down. She pulled out the things that she needed, and opened the textbook to the right page. Brushing the blue feather of her quill against her cheek, Hermy thought about the runes that she was going to use. Sorting her ideas out in her mind, she started to write.

Ancient Runes In-Class Exam (Open Book)
Hermy Smythe, 1st Year Ravenclaw

Runes chosen:
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...t_runes/ur.gifUruz - upright
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/thu.gifThurisaz - reverse
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ans.gifAnsuz - upright
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/geb.gifGebo - upright
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ihw.gifIhwaz - converse

The string I have chosen is to help combat nervousness and learned helplessness. It was constructed with the aim of not giving knowledge, but helping overcome problems with the talents that an individual already has. The first rune, uruz, I have placed helps reveal mental and physical strengths, both of which are needed to overcome problems. However, uruz also shows that this strength is to be used positivelyto stop the individual perceiving the demands are to high from them rather to destroy those who are weaker. It adds a good mental attitude to overcome the negatives.

I have next put thurisaz, but in the reverse form, to give protection to the caster as they decide on their best strategy. It lowers the perceived risk and helps overcome fear. Ansuz brings knowledge and wisdom, however when combined with the previous runes, I feel that it will release forgotten wisdom rather than giving an endless supply of knowledge, in this it reveals our true self, and linked with gebo shows our individual talents and skills.

Lastly I have chosen ihwaz, which will aid the conscious building of personal defence mechanisms to help overcome a defeatist and negative attitude. This is strong due to the converse form, showing that perceived danger will be easily averted through patience and concentrated effort. This helps motivation.

The string I have chosen aims to reveal the inner being by removing negative attitudes and therefore helping self esteem grow. Due to the combined nature of the runes, it will not affect those who are already self confident, nor will it overcome tose who are evil minded. It is designed for times of stress - the string should help clear the mind and prepare the wizard for what is to come. It will not overcome danger as a cast, however it should aid the mind in thinking about the best to route to solve a problem - whether by magic, logical or lateral thinking.
Hermy reread her writing, checking for any mistakes and decided that this was the best that she was likely to do. She put down her quill and rubbed her aching hand, before stretching upwards.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 06-19-2006 10:30 PM

Finally, because the clock in the wall showed they were running out of time, Margo a few conclusive notes before she would stand and hand in the sheet of paper to the professor's desk:

Maybe my mistake in this runes string is giving importance to two edges, two points of interest. For one, we have the secret, fire and protection. Even with only these three runes I would have problems determining the actual order of the runes in the string. (If we are thinking it from English Grammatica, we would need finding what the charm is protecting and then the source of harm from which we need protection (the fire); so we miss a noun in between. And you can't protect the "revealing of secrets", it doesn't sound coherent. On the other hand, we have Love and Luck, that is, luck at love. Grammatically speaking, Dagaz would be before Gifu.

So a last possible order for the runes would be http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/alg.gifhttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/dag.gif http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/geb.gifhttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ken.gifhttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/per.gif= Algiz+Dagaz+Gifu+Kenaz+Pertho:: "Protect Luck at Love against Fire & the Revealing of Secrets. It would change the meaning but it would appear to be the most coherent alternative from them all. At least in Grammatical English.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/rad.gifRaido : a journey hopfully the journey of life a chance to make
new friends and to keep the old friends.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ans.gifAnsuz: The wisdom to use and share the wealth.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/feh.gifFehu: wealth of good spirit emotional well be for me as well as others.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ken.gifKauno: Understanding enlightenment

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/geb.gifGebo : Love

Touy chose 5 runes with the hope to design a string that would make her a better friend. Writing on the parchement Touy had layed out the runes a few time till it seem to her that it was the way she wanted to see it.

1st Raido to state the intent of the chosen runes: lifes journey with the abilaty to be a caring and sharing person.

2nd Ansuz the wisdom to share and care about other.

3rd Fehu a wealth of good spirit for myself and others.

4th Kauno to give me understanding and enlightenment so I will know what to do to be a better friend.

Finaly Gebo Love to tie it all together.

Lay out this way Touy believes that it would give her the ability to be a better friend. To see people and care about them to understand them. To help people find what they need. The good thing about this was it was to make her better to others Touy thought that may help.

The drawback to this string is the extra interpatations that could be derived from it. Also would it be better to put a different rune at the start

Touy thought about this, would it be better with Gebo 1st a decoloration of love? No the Radio the statement of a journey seem the correct start because this would take time. Having Gebo seem best last as if to seal the string or statement. It would be like sealing it with a kiss.

Touy looked over her string Ansuz was also a prophecy or revalation this seem appropriate she hope that thing would be revealed. Then came Fehu this one was a little more tricky because it meat wealth, and Touy wasn't as concerned with monitary wealth. This is were Touy believe intent was important, intent and faith.

Kauno an other trick rune which interpatation Touy believe the older Gremanic interpatation but even with the new interpatation opening it would be alright opening permitted understanding and a sore would need healing. Kauno was going to have to go with intent.

Gebo was right in the end sealed with a kiss.

Touy looked it over yes this was what she wanted. After writing this out on her parchment Touy was ready to hand it in.

After gathering her things and putting them in her bag Touy stood up and placed her parchment on the professors desk and slipped out the door.

hermygirl 06-20-2006 01:23 PM

Hermy packed her things away, and placed her parchment carefully on the professor's desk as she left the room. Shoe hoped that she had chosen the appropriate runes and made her meaning clear.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 06-21-2006 01:49 AM

As the ring bell signalling the end of the exam, Margo was already sitting on her desk but nonetheless had forgotten to start packing her stuff. Such a slow pace it was too, she ended up being with the last people in the classroom: the ones that kept writing even though it was past ring time. As the students were filling out, Margo lingered, for one, not sure if there would be any "class" after the exam (she really didn't get the meaning behind "In-Class Exam"). Besides, it was fairly close to the end of the term. Might as well greet the professors and wish them a happy holiday.

Besides, she might get to have her exam corrected before she left and was curious about the mark. The mark of her exam, of course.
