The chaotic events involving the Love Potion had throughly disrupted Professor Opteryx's lesson plans for the term, though he himself wasn't all that upset about it. The craziness of the term had given him a nice break from the monotonies of his earlier occupation, and nobody could quite complain about that. While waiting for students to trickle in, Opteryx pulled out a few select runes from his drawer. | |

Meghan walked into the classroom. She looked around and saw no one from her own house. She shrugged and walked over to a chair and sat down. She pulled out her things and sat her bag on the floor while she waited for the class to start.

Julia rolls into the Ancient Runes classroom. She leaps to her feet next to the seat near Sebastian and brushes the dirt from the floor off her Bugs Bunny Cape. Swiftly taking a seat, she smiles at the Ravenclaw boy. Julia takes out her materials and sets her bag on the floor underneath her chair. Glancing around, she opens to her drawing section of her notebook and begins to draw Sebastian's ear, for no reason whatsoever, until class begins.

More specifically, Hagalaz means hail, both as an aspect of the weather and in the sense of a hail of missiles in battle. In both senses it has the implication of a destructive and order-threatening force. It represents a force beyond our immediate control. When Hagalaz is linked with other runes, it can suggest limitation, interruption, or delay, and imply a complete change in direction. Hagalaz can also mean suffering, hardship, illness, or injury." "Now then, this rune? And bonus points if anyone sees a pattern with the sequence of runes I'm introducing you to."

Christy thought for a while and then raised her hand: "That is Naudiz, it represents need, hardship, or adversity. It includes the perseverance to endure, and reserves of inner strength. It counsels patience. Naudiz can also warn against taking a risky path. In conjunction with other runes, Naudiz tends to have a delaying influence"

"Three points to Serilda and Christi for pointing out that this rune is Nauthiz and for their description if its properties. This rune has the meanings of need, constraint and even, in extremis, misery. Some authorities read this as a fate-rune and equate it with the Nornir, or Fates, or Norse myth. It had the power of providing help when scratched upon a fingernail, and its meaning thus vacillates between assistance and the need to survive.
Now Nauthiz symbolizes hardship, need or adversity, even a combination of the three. It also includes the perseverance to endure and reserves of inner strength, so you could say while it represents hardship, it also represents the strength to overcome that hardship. As Christi mentioned, it has a delaying influence when used with other runes. Nauthiz has the runic number ten, is associated with fire, an emale polarity, the god Skuld and Capricorn."
"Yurio, while your answer is technically correct, that wasn't quite what I was getting at. It's a more simple answer than that, and it has to do with the runic numbers associated with the runes we've learned before, for one..."

Professor Opteryx waited patiently in the silence that followed and decided that his students were either tired or worrying about the impending exams of their other classes. With an unconcerned shrug, he pressed on with the rest of the lesson. "Alright then, moving along. What's this rune and what rune is its meaning similar to?"

While Isa shares a similar element to Laguz--ice is frozen water--it's closer related to Hagalaz, which if you recall from earlier means hail. \Although ice can be beautiful, it is also dangerous. It can be slippery or trecherously thin, or block your progress, but it can take the heat out of a confrontation, or protect against magical attack. Emotionally, Isa implies a cooling of affection, or frigidity. It has a freezing, delaying, or preserving effect on other runes around it. It can also be used to reinforce the power of the runes it's bound to."
