Default Herbology Final

Professor Virohsa opened the door and waited for the students to show up.

The desks were empty, ready for to students to occupy their places. On one of the tables to the side had the containers that the students had collected previously.

Nadia walked in though the open door, waiting for a signal as to how this would be like the whole week. She looked around, taking in the surroundings before moving to some desk not much away from the window. Not like she was planning to give in to stress, loose it and jump though the window any minute now. Not planning it... at least.

Not failing to notice them, Nadia eyed the containers at the side of the room. Well, Professor Virohsa did remember. Not surprised either, the professor had mentioned they would be using them. But for the life of her, she couldn't think how so but for making tea.

She started to take parchment and quill out, believing it might be needed. She went back to look up, staring at the rows of spare desk yet to be occupied. Where was everybody? Two of them... should be out from detention by now, right?

Professor Virohsa looked around. "Open your books to page 547. You will be making a very specific antidote. Failing to do so, may be fatal", she added.

Quote:
1. Bring the cauldron to water boil
2. While waiting for the water to boil, cut all of the ingredients into fine lines
3. Once the water is at boil, add the earth-based ingredient threads
4. Swirl the water to the left for 2 minutes
5. Let it sit for 40 seconds
6. Add the water-element and the air-element while swirling the water to the left
7. Keep swirling until the water turns green
8. Then add the last ingredient (fire-based element)
9. Let the water sit until the green starts to turn blueish and has a transparency tint to it
10. Pour some of the liquid into a tube and label it carefully.
OOC- Nadia, I hope you remember you broke your second container in the Greenhouse a while back.
OOC- Everyone, you have 2 days.

Jessica walked inside aand occupied a seat. She was less nervous than she had been for the Arithmancy Final. She eyed the containers with interest. What could they be there for?

After hearing the Professor, she set to work, slightly nervous - Who wouldn't be if they told you something could be fatal if it went wrong? Lighting a cosy little fire underneath her cauldron, she poured in a handsome quantity of water and, for a second, watched it bubbling and frothing. Then she turned to her assortment of ingredients and with the help of a sharp knife, cut all of them into fine lines. She was a little sweaty by the end she wa finished with this, but after wiping her hands on her sleeves, she turned to the water again. It was now boiling and she carefully added the earth-based ingredient threads to it. She swirled it to the left for precisely 2 minutes and then let it sit for 40 seconds. After that, she added the water-element and the air-element while steadily swirling the water to the left till it turned a not exactly nice nice shade of green.

She then tthe fire-based element and added it, thankful that it was the last ingredient. She le tthe water sit again until the green started to turn blueish and had a transparency tint to it. She was sure everything was going fine till now and wa glad of it. Herbology wasn't exactly her best subject.

Finally, sweating and even a bit tired, she poured some of the liquid into a tube and labelled it carefully. She jotted down her name on the label in red and placed it aside, hoping it had all gone perfectly. From what she knew, it had gone alright, but she wasn't sure. She sincerely hoped it was not fatal.

OOC- Did I? O_O Didn't Nadia lost one and then recovered? Arg, will check. Lost the vial here. Recovered here. Unless I'm forgetting another happening =S

Potions! Who would have thought? She wasn't that bad with potions. These news sparking some hope within Nadia which seemed to light the weight over her shoulders and her lips corners moved upwards. She brought up her book and read, skimming though the steps only so that she was sure where they were heading. So came the trick, it were vague instructions and little notice of what the potion was suppossed to do.

Tilting her head, Nadia stood up; first thing first. She needed the ingredients. Luckily, she had her cauldron with her so she filled it with Aquamenti the ammount of water needed and lit a fire with Incendio. Indeed, she went to pick the containers, one each, of the ingredients from the desk at the side of the room. She found the poison and the petals alright but was having troubles with finding the pollen.

This was an interesting turn of events for Jaren, who had been wondering if the practical would have required tangling with a plant which possessed far too many supple vines and sharp venomous thorns. At the same time, practical Potions--where the list and instructions were laid out for him--was his strength. He scanned the list and picked out the lines where the ingredients were implied--well, Professor Virohsa had asked them to gather these items during classes, so he was fine and only had to sequence them properly and worry about the properties of the potion later.

Setting the water in his cauldron to boil, he carefully and steadily prepared the ingredients in the order they were to be used. He'd scribbled a small letter in the corner of each label previously to remind himself of the nature of each plant, which was an asset now that he was in an exam. As calm as always, he meticulously sliced each plant matter into fine lines, or as long pieces as he could manage with some, and attempted to make them more or less the same size for each time of plant matter. The pollen he left alone entirely, since it was near impossible to slice powder.
Once the water had boiled, he added the earth-based element and began stirring counterclockwise, timing himself.

Lee walked into the Greenhouse with only and ink well, quills and parchment in hand. He moved near the back, as he always did in Herbology related things. He hoped to pass this class but he was unsure and very nervous of this test, since it is quite useful to know what plants could potentially be magical or which are just normal muggle plants. He drummed his fingers on the desk awaiting further instructions.

Once the instructions were given Lee copied them onto a piece of parchment and then started. He placed his cauldron over the fire, and did as it said, waiting until it started to boil. While Lee was waiting he moved to the front and collected the ingredients and then took them back to his desk. He looked at the next set of instructions and then cut his ingredcients into fine lines.

Another few minutes past of waiting and the water int he cauldron had eventually boiled. Reading what was next he then added the earth based ingredient strips. The next bit seemed easy enough, taking his spoon he placed it into his potion and then swirled it anti-clockwise for a whole two minutes, two minutes that resulted in a sore arm afterwards. This however managed to recover during the forty seconds of relaxation time.

Next was to add the water and air ingredient strips whilst stirring anti-clockwise, and as Lee did. He began stirring and then added the ingredients in together. He had to wait until the potion turned green which happened in about forty five seconds, much simpler than the before two minutes.

He was almost finished and the last thing he had to do to complete the potion was to add the last ingredient, the fire element strips. He did so and then took a seat awaiting the colour change that was stated to happen. Lee was glad part of this final was potion making, he would of failed miserably otherwise.

Sooner and no later the Potion changed its shade to the blue transparent effect that was stated. He took a ladle and then poured it carefully into a tube. He corked the tube and then spellotaped a bit of parchment into the tube with his name on it. He took it to the Professor and then went back to his desk.

Potions. Peony wasn't that bad at it, provided she didn't get distracted, or impatient. Or frightened, but she was as far from the Goblin as she could get, which would just have to do.

...and also, don't you dare fail this on purpose because Goblins are immune to most poisons, the Voice paused in it's lecture as Peony's shoulders slumped visibly. Of course, if she had studied her HoM textbook properly (where Urgg the Horrible tries to poison Slurd the Foremost), she would probably know that that wasn't true - but Peony seldom read the section on Goblin wars - there was a large picture of a Goblin general that scratched nasty parts of itself inecessantly, and smaller pictures scattered the other pages.

As if I'd waste marks on destroying that Goblin for the good of the world... thought Peony to herself a little sullenly as she waited for the water to boil. Jaren Kymers was along the line of Goblins as Satan is to the devils.

Pulling her knife out, Peony began to chop the plants up as finely as she could, using her thumb to guard against the flesh of her hands being accidentally sliced by the sharp knife. She helped out with the cooking at home quite a lot, when she went back. Automatically, she turned around - knowing the water had been boiled by now, and gingerly began to feed the threads of her earth-based ingredients into the hot water. The steam rose and flushed her face.

Left - Peony made a little twirling gesture, her wand hand was her right hand - that meant this was her left hand -

The Voice heaved a sigh, and the left eye almost rose itself to heaven before Peony stopped it.

She stirred it, trying not to hurry, waiting impatiently for the two minutes to end.

Xavier opened his book and read the directions on the page. Looking at the cauldron in front of him he muttered, "Aguamenti." Slowly the cauldron filled with water. After using the spell twice more he said, "Incendio." The water started to heat up to a boil.

Default ooc- for now I'm gonna play as if Nadia has the ingredients with your permission...

Nadia carried all the ingredients containers back to her desk and arranged them into rows for organization. The Thornapple poisonous leaves(3) and seeds (7), middle part of the Hibbicus Coccineus flower with two pinches of pollen, two salmon petals of the Evening Primrose, and Marigold petals sample. She cut and slized all ingredients into thin lines, being careful to use dragonhide gloves for the poisonous leaves and seeds of the thornapple. By the time she was finished, the water was effectively boiling.

Taking one deep breath, Nadia dropped the ammount of the thornapple into the cauldron first, both the seeds and the leaves. The next step read said "Swirl the water to the left for 2 minutes". She suppossed it meant stirring, and counterclockwise. Seemly the instructions in this book were particularly old and imprecise, all more for the challenge of brewing. But with the risk of poison and being this a final exam, it was only affecting her nerves. With a queasy stomach, she put the bits of the Hibbicus Coccineus and the pollen with that of the Marigold, while waiting for the 40 minutes to be up and checking with her muggle watch.

Time up and she dropped the pile with both plants parts, "swirling" again to the left. To her relief, the water turned green without much time waiting. Finally, and sparing a look around out of nervousness, she took a deep breath, picked the pink pile that was the Evening Primrose's and dropped it inside the cauldron as well. Nadia then sat back on down her desk chair, and instead of waiting to see the resulting color, waited a bit in that spot to rest. Meanwhile covered the labelling of the vial and eyed Lee strangely.

OOC- Yep, I think you're right Nadia, so you're good.

Professor Virohsa walked around the class as the students were engaging on their final task. She nodded at the ones who were working diligently and frowned at the ones who were merely sweating. "Well, we will find out if you failed or passed after you are done.. because you will have to drink your own potion.. not the one in the tube, that is. That is for me to test independently", she explained.

"If you have done it correctly, you will nothing but a slight tingling feeling... if you have not.. well...", she raised her eyebrow. The student who had not done it correctly would immediately faint. However, no harm would come to them because she would revive them with some of her antidotes she had reserved for this occasion.

Karen gathered all her supplies and ingredients, trying to feel confident in herself. Herbology had never been one of her better subjects, but she'd give it her best shot. She read the directions several times through, making sure that she understood them clearly. She prepared her cauldron and while she waited for the water to boil, she cut her ingredients into fine lines. It took some time, but when she was finished, her water was boiling. Karen checked the directions before continuing, and then added the earth-based ingredient threads. She then swirled the water to the left for two minutes, and let it sit for 40 seconds. She swirled the water to the left once more, and then with the other hand added the water and air elements to the cauldron. It felt like an eternity before the water finally started to have a greenish tint to it. Finally, she added the fire-based element. She waited until the potion was a transparent blue. Karen waited until she was confident that it was finished, then poured some of it into an empty tube and labeled it. Unsure what to do next, she simply held her tube at her table, waiting quietly for the others to finish.

WHAT?! Virohsa's announcement did something to perturb Nadia deeply. If it wasn't risky enough that they had blurry instructions for an unknown potion that was counting for an exam test, they were also suppossed to poison themselves? And she was putting it lightly with 'poison'. This potion used great doses of a poisonous plants. Nadia couldn't help the look of terror on her face. She couldn't help wondering if she was that mad about that one occurrance.

Clearing her throat, Nadia tried to push that thought aside and got midly distracted by Lee again. Exasperated as she was, she couldn't help wanting to shake teh guy over the shoulder, looked he was in dreamland. Was it all effect of that one potion? Speaking of potions gone wrong... Nadia kicked Lee's desk to get his attention and gesture what he was suppossed to have started.

Of course, she acted as she was still writing down her data in the vial while with her foot she kicked the desk of Lee when she thought Virohsa wasn't looking. It read, Nadia Chantalona Rey, 7th year Slytherin. She had yet to check the color of it. Nadia pondered they would have to drink this, whether they did it right or not. She didn't think even Melita would try poisoning them! In fact, Nadia was starting to see Virohsa in a whole new light... in which the professor looked pretty scary. She had had Death Eaters professor less scary.

In fact, way to make her shudder... She thought of this while she poured the potion, one into the labelled vial, the other into a spare one. And, Morgana's curse, she had turned color blind in the exact and only worst time...

As Xavier's water was boiling in front of him he turned to the table he was at and pulled out the necesary ingredients. Next he pulled out his knife and started to cut the ingredients up into the fine lines described in the text.

The water continued to heat up. It would probably be done about the same time the ingredients were ready.

Of course the potion was best tested on oneself, Jaren thought as he carried along the next few steps at a steady pace, checking the instructions regularly to make sure he was not going off track. Professor Airlia made them test their brewed potions on themselves, after all, when she had deemed it safe.

He took the 40 seconds of leaving the potion alone to re-check the instructions and gather the water and air-based plant parts. After the allocated time, he deposited them into the potion and resumed stirring counterclockwise. His potion gradually began to turn a kind of faint lime green, which darkened as he continued to stir.

Finding she couldn't delay this any longer, not while the time was close to be up, Nadia looked once more around, if only to check if other students had finished up and were trying it already - in look of a good sign, a person who had managed yet not to sprung flowers from their ears. But she wasn't lucky; midly she wondered if she had been too fast, if she had missed 5 minutes on the stewing or was only a matter of how powerful was the flame under her cauldron. Speaking of that, the instructions about the fire...

Nadia couldn't think any more. The most she tried, the most sick she felt of her stomach. There was only one thing she could do before having to test the poison. That was, placing the vial, the one which was labelled, to the desk up front. Which Nadia did, looking as if she was marching in a funerary.

Really, how could Virohsa poison them? Maybe Nadia should drop it all and make it all again just to be sure. But, shoot, she couldn't! The ingredients were so that there was only one to each - the one they had done. Oh sure Nadia was over-reacting, right? It was the nerves of the NEWTs and the stress of the mirror thing and the whole bunch of stuff, right? It was all stress. MY! The building stress. Nadia was shaking back at her desk, man, returned to the worst of her states while she brought up the second vial with liquid.

(She takes a deep breath.) Sure, Nadia must be wrong, 'cause, she must have misheard -- there was no way Virohsa had said the error was fatal? Her mind wasn't making much sense at the moment and all she could think was the terror of failing, dropped apathy, the glass of the vial shaking from MBD aka Magical Break Down...

No sooner the vial had touched Nadia's lips, her eye balls rolled up and she had dropped to the floor, uncounscious. Be it either by failture of the brewing of the potion... or sheer... dumb... nerves.

Peony religiously did everything she was supposed to do. Her potion gradually turned green as it was supposed to do, an unfurling, leafy green. The Evening primrose petals she slowly scattered in swirled about. Peony - reader of much manga - was reminded of the sakura petals scattered interminably across the vista when someone was looking particularly lovely with sparkles in their eyes. It was a special effect - a lazy one, since sakura petals were almost ridiculously easy to draw.

Leave it now, cautioned the Voice as Peony looked slightly uneasy as to what to do.

So she perched up on her desk, uncomfortably near the fire and waited for it to turn blue, which it did, slowly but surely, a delicate tint of blue, deepening slowly to cobalt - a lovely sight, but Peony was seized by panic. Was that the right colour?!

Of course she couldn't look into someone else's cauldron - with shaking hands, Peony ladled out the necessary portions. In handwriting that was uncharacteristically neat, she wroter her name down.

Peony Tan, Ravenclaw, Sixth Year.

She placed that vial in front, then was about to raised her own potion to her lips when Nadia dropped like a stone before her. Peony stared at her limp form, her hand freezing in mid-air, eyes wide.

Then she slowly put her own potion down.

Right...

Professor Virohsa watched as Nadia walked over to her desk and left the vial there... or as she began drinking the vial. She was a tad surprised that Nadia's potion had failed since the girl had spent so much time working on her potion. Regardless, the girl had fainted which could mean that she had failed her test. Without further ado, Virohsa got up and walked towards the girl.

Taking her wand out she pointed it at Nadia to figure out if it was the vial or something else. Deciding it must have been either and it was to early to tell, she took out a small bottle. She opened Nadia's mouth and put 2 small drops of the clear liquid on Nadia's tongue.

If she had been poisoned by her inability to do a potion, she would wake up immediately with a slight headache and an aftertaste of dirt. If she had not been poisoned and had just fainted because of nerves she would still immediately wake up with a slight headache and an aftertaste of dirt, as well as a strong desire for chocolate.

Lee had been sitting about for the past ten minutes now eyeing his potion. He would HAVE to drink it to pass, but what was more to Lee, failing and not going through the drastic effects that may come of a wrongly brewed concoction or passing but taking the risk of failing and putting up with the drastic effects.

He sort of confused himself because he had never failed in normal Potion making when he knew what he was doing and when he had the instructions in front of him. But his earlier experiments and the detention with the Headmistress had scared him, he was surprised he could even drink pumpkin juice after that experience.

He took his ladle once more and scooped up some of his potion, he took a small sniff of it before continuing. He was about to put it to his lips when from the corner of his eye Nadia fainted. He dropped his ladle and the potion that was consumed in it spilled across the floor. Luckily people were more intrested in Nadia's collapsing than his spilt Potion.

He quickly retreived some paper towels from the front of the room and soaked the spilled Potion. Lee looked over to see the latest and the Professor was examining and helping Nadia. Nadia's reaction to her potion only made him more nervous, but Lee had to do it, he had to face it. Besides the Professor would be able to cure him if it went wrong....... hopefully.

Lee took a third ladle scoop of his potion and he hoped it would be the last, well for the rest of this day anyway. He took the potion to his lips and sniffed it once again, he was still not satisfied with its stench but closed his eyes and downed the brew as quick as possible. The look on Lee's face showed he disliked the taste of the Potion. But he did have to be thankful... he wasn't on the floor like Nadia... and there was a tingling feeling there, not too strong, but it was in there somewhere. "Professor?.... I think i've completed it successfully," Lee said giving a small burp afterwards and then apologising to the people around him.

Jaren's eyes darted over to the right as they detected movement, mainly Nadia keeling over. He was more than slightly surprised and...something else as well, but he probably wouldn't admit to it even if he managed to pin the thought down and examine it. He froze for about two seconds as his mind waged a quick and fierce war, before Professor Virohsa got up and dealt with the matter.

Shaking his head slightly he went back to the potion, registering that it was green and he needed to add the last ingredient to it. There was nothing to do now but to wait until the potion turned blue and vaguely transparent.

About five minutes later (with Jaren glancing repeatedly in Nadia's direction as well as the rest of the classroom) the potion gained a teal hue, which darkened slightly as the potion cleared to more of saphire. Not that Jaren had a sensitivity to discern very slightly different colors to know if it had "blued" enough, but he let it sit a little longer until he was satisfied the color had stopped changing and ladeled it carefully into a vial. He labelled the vial with his name, year and House before setting it down.

Cautiously ladelling a small amount from his cauldron, he stared at it somewhat suspiciously for a few moments before sipping it. Well, he didn't keel over, so that was a good sign...and he began to feel as if a tiny amount of electric current had been running through his body, which he expected was the "tingling" sensation that the Professor had stated earlier.

"As have I," he added after Lee had spoken.

Karen noticed that some of the other students were already testing their potion out, so she bravely dipped some out of her cauldron, hoping that she wouldn't faint. She took a sip, and waited for something to happen. A few seconds passed before she felt a small, tingeling sensation course through her. Sighing with relief, Karen raised her hand and said, "Professor, my potion was successful as well."

Once the water came to a boil, Xavier tipped in the earth-based ingredients. The potion fizzled a little bit. Taking a stirring stick he swirled the water to the left for two minutes. It fizzled even less.

Then he stopped stirring and let it sit for forty seconds. This time all of the fizzling stop. Sighing a breath a relief he added in the water and air elements and swirled it to the left until it became green. Finally, he added the fire based element.

(ooc- I actually left the conclusion open on purpose so you could tell me if Nadia failed or not ) Something, a liquid, was running down her tongue. Nadia choked a bit on it, coughing several times. But she quite refused to wake up. Maybe she needed the rest. She surely looked like she could stay like that a bit longer as in that odd position she... snored (o_O).

Some time later and she rolled on the side a bit, sparing them any more audio and she dreamt she was fighing with some dragon when she realized she had lost her weapon. A huge chocolate bar. She knew, without it, she didn't stand a chance. It was dumb enough because the dragon was smaller than her and was really from a feria at Wicked Pocus. Now she had to hop in one leg for half an hour to win the next competition and have a time-turner fall into her head in the next task.

The dreamt kept on going as Nadia was in this quest for chocolate though a bubbling volcano and Marcy has dancing with a Hawaiian skirt nearby. People were seemly offering goods to a god in the opening of the volcano saying "I'm done" or "I've been sucessful" as some kind of prayer. Nadia remembered a volcano meant "an obstacle to be dealt with before it explodes" in Divination..
