A dash of vanilla, a pinch of cinnamon, stir until smooth.

Kurumi smiled as she stired the contents of her porcelain cooking bowl. Today, she was sure she would find the perfect combination. She may have failed five hundred and thirteen times before, but five hundred and fourteen would be different. Glancing over at the box of Cockroach Clusters, Kurumi was begging to doubt that very much.

Walnut appeared and knocked the box over sending cockroaches everywhere. Several flew into her hair and, as she waved her arms around frantically, she smashed the eggs she was holding on her head.

“Hey Half-breed!”

Looking up from the fantasy novel she was reading, the young girl turned her head just in time for cold sticky wet earth to strike her face and splatter all over her new pink jumper. Temporarily blinded, all she could do was try and wipe the mud from her face as more of the hateful blobs were thrown at her.

The young girl clutched the book to her chest and tried to protect it from all the sludge being thrown at her. Her raven hair stuck to her face as liquid fire began streaming down it.

“…help me…”

Sitting on the library floor with their books and parchment scattered all over the place, it looked more like the two were trying to unravel a mystery instead of simply doing their latest Charms assignment. They had already been studying for several hours, but neither one was fully satisfied with their six inch essay on the Fidelius Charm and its uses during the Second Wizarding War.

“Hugo, what’s another word for something you want to protect?” Kurumi asked flipping through her dictionary. She hated using the same word twice.

“Fee,” Hugo replied not even looking up from his own essay.

Kurumi frowned as she looked at herself in the mirror, her violet eyes glazed over with pain that was fighting to get out. Slowly, she removed the brown colored contacts and set them in their case on the table before returning to the mirror.

Different. She was the nail that was sticking out and no matter how hard people pounded down on her she never seemed to fit in line with the rest of the nails. Why? Why did she have to be born different? Why did those around her have to be so cruel to her because she was?

“Today, we are going to discuss perhaps one of the greatest of all Muggle inventions, the rubber duck,” Professor Zookara beamed from the front of the classroom.

Kurumi knew there had been something up with this professor and rubber ducks. He had a massive collection in his office and she was still determined to find him in a picture dressed up as one. Still, his collection did not compare to a Mrs. Charlotte Lee who owned 2,583 unique rubber ducks.

“Please come to the front and grab a duck. We will be racing them today at the end of class.”

“Well, you can tell Junichiro that I am not going to give him back his ball,” Takashi scoffed folding his arms across his chest.

Kurumi looked to her older brother and repeated the message.

“Tell Takashi that it was mine to begin with and what he is doing is stealing!” the boy snapped back.

Kurumi turned her head to the right to face her other brother. They had been using Kurumi like this for an hour.

“Will you two knocked it off,” the oldest brother sighed throwing a wadded up piece of paper at them. “Kurumi is not your owl!”

“Kurumi! Duck!”

Kurumi threw herself onto the floor so quickly that she ended up knocking the wind out of herself. Whose brilliant idea was it to want to test their potions homework by unleashing Doxies in the middle of the Gryffindor common room? When she found out who it was, they could be sure to never be receiving cookies from her again!

Covering her head as several of the pests flew towards her, Kurumi felt a sharp sting in her right index finger.

“Ouch! It bit me!”

Her finger throbbed and she began feeling dizzy.

Yep, no cookies for them.

Kurumi watched as Eino removed the dew droplets from the flower on Faustus’ top with a dropper. One drop, he returned to the cactus by squirting it into the soil while the other one he put on a small dish between the two of them and leaned in to watch it. Not knowing what else to do, Kurumi copied and stared at it.

“Um, Eino? What are we looking for?”

“We are examining the dew and how it reflects light,” he said confidently.

Walnut jumped onto the table, sniffed the droplet, and then licked it up with his pink tongue.

Kurumi leaned her elbows on the railing and let the cool night breeze blow through her hair that was hanging loosely around her shoulders.

“Found it!” Ryunosuke said passing the telescope to his little sister.

Excitedly, Kurumi peered through it to see a beautiful comet dancing its way across the starry sky.

“It’s beautiful,” she chirped. “It’s just like magic!”

Ryunosuke laugh. “You might have something there. Magic, just like comets can be beautiful, but they can also be destructive.”

Kurumi looked up at her brother. “Really? How?”

“If they choose to. Our choices decide our destiny. Always remember that.”

Time stopped for a brief eternity.

Kurumi didn't know how it was supposed to feel, being kissed for the first time and, even as she stood there with Adam’s lips to hers, she still wasn’t sure what it felt like. It was as if life itself had been turned on its side and the world was stopping just for them. Kurumi felt as though she were going to melt just like the chocolate she had used that morning to make Chocolate Heart Bliss Cookies.

Kurumi closed her eyes and felt the heavens dance as liquid diamonds fell from her eyes.

“Mama, am I doing this okay?” 6-year-old Kurumi squeaked peering over the bowl of blueberry frosting she had been stirring with a wooden spoon.

“Looks good,” her mother smiled taking a tray of freshly baked sugar cookies out of the oven. “But, looks can be deceiving, so you need to taste everything.”

Kurumi took the wooden spoon and scooped enough frosting to cover at least seven cookies. She then popped the spoon in her mouth, but it was far too much for her small mouth and frosting went all over her face.

“Try taking a smaller taste,” her mother laughed.

“Smile!” Heather said as she pushed down on the button to her camera.

Kurumi waited bouncy on the bed with anticipation and sending yellow feathers all over. An empty box of Canary Creams lay open on the floor and Mr. Panda was chasing Walnut around the base of the bed.

“Can’t it go any faster?” Kurumi whined impatiently as she waited for the picture to develop.

“Wizarding film takes some time” Heather responded calmly.

The polaroid’s contents emerged and the two girls leaned in to take a better look before bursting out into laughter. They did make ridiculous looking canaries.

Kurumi yawned and turned to the next page of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She was glad to have Fee as a study partner seeing as the girl practically radiated sunshine. Yet, after five hours in the library even Kurumi had to admit she was tired. Glancing over at Fee, Kurumi squeaked with surprise to see that the blonde was licking her quill.

“W-W-What are you doing?”

“Oh, this is a sugar quill,” Fee explained taking another lick.

Quills were made from sugar? Kurumi had to try for herself. She licked her own quill and…Gross! Definitely not sugar.

It was hard to describe the look on her brother Takashi’s face. It was the combination of a dog looking at a bone after not having eaten for a week and the eyes of a young boy seeing a brand new bike under the Christmas tree. At least, that is how it looked to Kurumi as her brother was practically drooling all over the picnic table where they sat.

“She’s even more beautiful than a Veela,” he said in a day dreamy sort of tone.

“She looks more beautiful than an eel?” Kurumi asked tilting her head to the side.

{ breaking the fourth wall } mini challenge

Kurumi sat down at the grand piano that had appeared in the Room of Requirement. Adjusting her white skirt a bit, she placed her delicate fingers on the keys and began to play the melody her mother had written for her. As her fingers flew over the keys, she began to hum.

All of a sudden, she began to sing at the top of her lungs, pounding down on the keys, and tossing her head back and forth.

“Yodel-laydee-hoo!”

“Um, Katherine…don’t you think this is a bit out of character?”

{ new beginnings } mini challenge

“Kurumi Hollingberry.”

There she stood frozen in place with her violet eyes gazing on the very object that was about to decide her wizarding fate. She had to admit after hearing everyone on the train talk about its importance that it would be a little more elegant looking and now like something her cat may have dragged in.

Kurumi took baby steps forward until she found herself sitting on the stool in front of everyone in the Great Hall. As the hat slowly descended on her head, Kurumi felt her heart pounding in her chest trying to get out.

“Gryffindor!”

“Walnut! Leave Momotaro alone!” Kurumi cried chasing her cat around the dormitory.

Walnut, who had his eyes fixated on the pink cotton ball, ignored her and continued to pounce all over the place hoping that one of his great leaps would land him his prize. Unfortunately, the pygmy puff found himself backed into a corner between a wooden closet and the leg of Kurumi’s bed. Momotaro began to shake violently as if he had been holding his breath for a long time. Suddenly, the puff spit pink water from his mouth and covered the cat in pink.

That’ll teach you!

“Why does mother make me wear these?” Kurui asked taking the contact case from Ryunosuke.

“Because she’s a Muggle,” mused Takashi.

Ryunosuke threw a wet rag at him. “Shut up!”

“What does that word mean? Kurumi asked.

“It means…she is afraid of things that are different.” Ryunosuke replied.

“Is that why she wouldn’t let the owl with a letter into the house?”

The owl had eventually been let in, but Kurumi hadn’t been allowed to read the contents of the letter addressed to her. Wait a few more weeks, she was told.

“Does that mean mother is afraid of me?”

“Sometimes…I think I need to handle you with dragonhide gloves.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Kurumi asked folding her arms across her chest.

Adam looked around the kitchen at the mess that Kurumi had made throwing gobs of dough at a cockroach in her feeble attempt to immobilize it, but it had managed to escape.

“Do I really have to answer that?” he laughed swaying a bit.

Kurumi blushed as she tallied the damages. “It’s not like I am a Blast-Ended Skrewt.”

“True, but you certainly can be dangerous when it comes to baked goods!”

Wearing a pair of her mother’s red heals, Kurumi chased after her older brothers holding some of the Shinto prayer papers her mother kept next to the door.

“The flame of passion and Rin Ryou Tao Sha. With the power of prayers I shall strike evil, Sailormars of the red heels!” Kurumi said taking a dramatic pose and nearly tripping over her own feet. “In the name of Mars I shall chastise you!”

Kurumi threw one of the pieces of paper as she had seen her heroine do on television to attack, but it just fluttered to the ground instead.

“You’re a witch, Kurumi,” her father said with unblinking green eyes. “I am a wizard your brothers are as well.” He picked up the letter that the owl had delivered and handed it to her for her to open.

Kurumi took the letter with trembling hands as her face had shock written all over it.

“Kurumi, you look like you have been smacked in the stomach by the Whomping Willow!” Takashi laughed.

“You can’t blame her,” Ryunosuke said putting his arm around his little sister. “You looked even worse!

“What’s that?” Kurumi asked.

“Don’t worry, you’ll find out.” Ryunosuke replied.

Kurumi hated to do it, but since this particular class never really seemed to pick up like Charms or Transfiguration did...

Even Potions kept her attention better, but that was partially due to Dragon Lady’s potential fire breathing abilities.

Pulling out a spare piece of parchment, Kurumi set to doing what she did each lesson: plan cookie recipes. She had come up with some of her best recipes in History of Magic actually.

Jotting down five ideas for a new cookie, Kurumi gazed up at the clock and sighed. She was going to be history before class really went anywhere.

“What are you reading?” Kurumi asked sitting down on the couch in the Gryffindor common room next to one of her Gryffindor princes, Patroclus. She leaned forward to try and get a better look at the cover.

“Just reading a Muggle comic book that I found,” he said showing her the cover. “The Human Torch, pretty cool, huh? I think this guy used Incendio a bit too much.”

“I am pretty sure this one in particular suffered from cosmic radiation,” Kurumi said taking the comic from the prefect.

“Cosmic what?”

“Never mind,” she said giving him back his comic book.

Kurumi leaned on the balcony of her home letting the warm sunlight bathe her face. She had a lot on her mind recently with her 7th and final year at Hogwarts quickly approaching. So much had happened and she had grown so much, yet she felt as though she still had so much to learn.

“Whatcha doing?” Ryunosuke asked coming up behind her.

“Just thinking.”

“About this being your last year?”

Kurumi nodded. “What am I going to do after?”

“You could come work for the Mahou Daily with me.”

“No thank you,” she laughed. “I want something more exhilarating.”

Black hair instantly turned a vivid pink as 11-year old hands flew over all the fabrics of various colors.

“Mama! Can I get these purple ones?” a young girl said looking up at her mother.

“Of course,” Kurumi smiled kneeling down next to her daughter. “You need to control your metamorphagus abilities though.”

Standing back up, Kurumi escorted her daughter to the school robes section and stopped when she found the ties and her expression softened. It didn’t take long for the little girl beside her to notice.

“What is it?” she asked peering around her mother.

“Memories,” Kurumi smiled.
