11. History of Magic

Ron was asleep again, in History of Magic. Hermione merely rolled her eyes as Harry busily tried to catch up on his Potion’s homework before the next class. Quidditch, a fugitive out to kill him and plain ol’ bad luck conspired against him.

Enter Ron’s dream:

“Unhand her you brigand,” the red-haired corsair brandishing his sword at the pirates.

Hermione pulled up her corset making her hero blush every shade of red.

While Captain Harry laughed evilly, his pirate owl on his shoulder and the eye patch under his glasses.

“Honestly Ronald aren’t you going to save me?” Hermione exclaimed.

6. Divination

Asleep yet again, in Divination this time, Ron’s fevered mind picked up on his dream where Hermione slamming her book had cause him to leave off.

She slapped him hard across the face.

“What was that for? I’m here to save you,” Ron complained grabbing her around the waist and swinging from the pirate ship’s mast onto the deck.

“Sorry, you’re dressed like a pirate so …” she shrugged.

“But I’m the good pirate,” Ron said.

“Save me and I’ll give you a thimble.”

From the poop deck Captain Harry waved his hooked hand in the air cursing his luck.

48. Leprechaun

“I know you’re after me lucky charms,” the leprechaun said laughing, running off with Ottery’s cauldron.

“Hey bring that back I need it for class,” he screamed. He could already hear Professor Snape giving him detention.

Hermione pushed Ron and Harry against the wall as the dark haired boy ran past chasing the leprechaun.

Harry looked at Ron, who looked at Hermione who looked at them both.

Harry, “He really gets into the oddest scrapes.”

Hermione, “Why is Ottery after his lucky charms?”

Ron, “This is just weird.” He shrugged, “I better go save him …”

Hermione, “You mean we.”

7. Care of Magical Creatures

“Blast ended skrewt?” Harry asked a look of horror on his face.

“Isn’t that what they call your momma, Malfoy?” Ron said back, still burning after Draco’s mudblood remark before.

Draco looked livid, as Theodore laughed next to him. Harry smiled and Ron turned to look at Hermione expecting the worst. He was surprised to find her laughing aloud. She put her hand to her mouth to stifle the sound, it had caught her completely by surprise.

“I think I’m gonna like this semester,” Harry said.

Then Hagrid walked out with the monsters for that terms Care of Magical Creatures.

8. Potions

Love Potion no. 9, the book said. It was a potent little draught. Harry wondered if Hermione would help him with a batch. Then again, maybe the Half Blood Prince had something on the subject in his book he’d have to check that out.

“All right there Harry?” Ron asked, startling the boy so he dropped the book.

Hermione picked it up, “Powerful potions for people with predicaments.”

"Yeah it’s nothing," he said, taking the book and shelving it again, “let’s go outside.”

He couldn’t tell them he’d been contemplating for one jealous second of using some on Ginny Weasley.

18. Whomping Willow

It had been Harry’s absurd idea to have a reunion at Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione were standing a safe distance away from the Whomping Willow, which was busy taking potshots at any birds too silly to stay away.

“I can’t believe it’s been so long,” Hermione said, taking Ron’s hand in hers.

He kissed her, “Time flies doesn’t it?”

Running up the hill trailing a flock of kids were Harry, and Ginny, Seamus and Dean.

“Neville and Luna not here?” he asked.

“Not yet Professor Potter,” Ron said smiling.

Ron bent down to pick his youngest, a red haired girl.

71. Untie

“It’s called a Gordian Knot, Ronald,” Hermione said, “You can’t get past it unless you untie it.”

“We don’t have time,” he complained seeing the devil’s knot for it was tied so tight it couldn’t be undone, “Harry needs help.” Taking Godric Gryffindor’s blade from Hermione’s hand, he swiped cutting the knot.

“C’mon.”

He opened the door and grabbed her hand pulling her into the Chamber of Secrets were the last bit of Voldemort was secreted away. Hermione looked at Ron with a newfound admiration in her eyes. Behind his cute blushing face was the keen mind of a strategist.

36. Muggle

“Why don’t we ask a muggle?” Ron said trying to be helpful.

Hermione turned on him, “I know as much about the muggle world as they do Ron,” Harry rolled his eyes behind them.

“We’re here to save Sirius. I don’t care if we don’t have change for the telephone box … we didn’t need it before for the pay phone,” he complained.

Ron shrugged and mumbled, “It’s just … you told me they always used money … and none of us brought any change.”

Hermione patted his arm. Harry really was being a bit of a bully right now.

34. Parseltongue

“Ottery’s been talking dirty to Ron in parseltongue,” Harry said to Hermione.

“I haven’t!” the dark haired boy said blushing, next to him Ron turned crimson as well.

Hermione rolled her eyes, was it really that hard to get homework done?

Harry turned laughing to see who had just walked in to the common room. His smile fell and his face seemed like that of a deer looking onto oncoming headlights.

“Harry,” Ron said pushing his friend.

Ginny walked into the room laughing. It was when she ran into Dean’s arms that Harry’s face resembled the deer after the accident.

16. Dragonhide gloves

Ron looked at Hermione oddly; she had just handed him a pair of dragonhide gloves.

“What are these for?”

Hermione sighed and gave him that ‘oh you naïve boy’ look of hers, “You’re the one who made Ottery mad.”

“And when he’s angry,” Harry chimed in, “He’s harder to handle than a porcupine.”

“Just thought you might want to take the precaution,” Ginny said, her arms wrapped around Harry. He smiled at her and Ron looked completely perplexed. He still wasn’t sure how to feel about Harry and Ginny and now Ottery was going all blast ended skrewt on him.

4. Ancient Runes

“I can’t help but think we should shove it into a burning pit of lava,” Ottery exclaimed.

Hermione rolled her eyes, Ron slapped him on the shoulder, as Harry looked at them all oddly. “Ever since we went to see Lord of the Rings at the movie theater Ottery thinks we should all chuck any rings we find into fiery pits,” Ron explained.

“It’s got ancient runes,” the boy objected.

“And they say ‘To Tom with love’,” Hermione objected.

“Fine but don’t blame me when the dark lord comes looking for it,” the boy replied.

Harry, Ron and Hermione laughed.

57. Gape

“To gape, the act of staring with your mouth open,” Hermione said as she, Hannah and Ottery stood by watching Ron, Harry, Neville, Ernie and even Draco staring at the girls from Beauxbaton.

“I bet you if the Irish school showed up with Leprechaun students they wouldn’t be staring like that.” Ottery grumbled.

Hermione walked over pushing her way between Ron and Harry. She could be heard to exclaim, “Boys!”

Harry took his eyes away reluctantly pulling Ron away with him. They turned to Otts, “What’s her problem?”

Ron still staring at the Beauxbaton girls.

“Dunno mate, you know girls.”

99. Newspaper

“Of course I read the newspaper, what does that have to do with anything?” Harry asked perplexed.

Ron smiled at Harry, sitting next to his best mate. They’d only just made up after their worst fight ever and he didn’t know how to approach the news exactly.

“So did you two start …”

“What?” Harry asked.

“No, Ronald, how could you be so dense?” Hermione remarked acidly, unnecessarily angry.

“Because it’s all over the school that you and Hermione are seeing each other,” Ron answered sighing happily. He served himself a half dozen pancakes and sausages, his appetite suddenly back.

69. Slap

It was like the sound of a whip cracking. Everyone turned to look at Hermione slapping Draco Malfoy.

“Oh boy,” Ottery said.

In seconds Ron and Harry were at her side, likewise Draco had Crabbe and Goyle.

“How dare you lay your filthy hands on me, mudblood?”

The sound of a cracking whip rang out, not once or twice but six times. The dark haired boy looked up. Draco was a chicken, and Crabbe and Goyle were dancing. Harry was stomping out a fire on Ron’s robes and Hermione picked leeches off Harry’s robes. Just another typical day at school.

62. Lope

“Lope, that’s what Professor Lupin does when there’s a full moon. Go out for a lope.” Draco said to raucous laughter.

Harry, Ron and Hermione finished eating quickly and left.

“He was the best Defense, teacher we’ve had,” Harry said.

Hermione nodded, “I can’t believe people would …” She was trying hard not to cry.

Ron buried his hands deep in his pockets, as he limped. His bite still hurt though it was mostly healed.

“Yeah, he was.” Ron said. “What do you reckon’s gonna happen to him,” he looked around to see they were alone then added, “And Sirius?”

79. author's choice

“Hermione, I love you,” Harry said.

Ron looked at the boy perplexed. He turned to the bar and realized that Madame Rosmerta was eyeing them, with an expression that seemed to say, “How cute,” since Harry was holding Ron’s hands over the table.

Ron drew them away suddenly, and turned a bright crimson.

“It’s really just that easy Ron. I dunno why you don’t just tell her,” Harry said. Before the boy could reply, Hermione walked up with their butterbeers.

“Madame Rosmerta sent these over with her compliments,” Hermione said surprised, as Harry laughed and Ron slid under the table.

5. Astronomy

“Astronomy’s too close to astrology for me to like it,” Ron complained, as Hermione handed him another job advisement leaflet.

“Well you’ve got to do something once you graduate from Hogwarts don’t you Ronadl?” she asked.

“I could globetrot,” the boy said smiling.

Harry ignored their argument. Defeating Voldemort was about the only thing he could think of in his future. After that … well he wondered if there would be an ‘after that’.

“Harry?” Hermione noticed his silence.

“I’m going to be a plumber,” he replied.

“A plumber?” she asked shocked.

Ron looked at him, “What’s a plumber mate?”

9. Defense Against the Dark Arts

The arrival of Professor Lupin was a definite change from their last two instructors in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Hermione was eyeing the boys curiously as Ron and Harry where in the library with her looking up information on grindylows.

“Would you stop staring at us like that Hermione?” Ron asked.

She smiled in spite of herself.

“I can’t help it. You two are actually doing your work without me being on your backs about it.”

Harry and Ron exchanged a guilty glance.

“Our defense homework,” Ron said and she knew their potions essays were probably not even started.

19. Wand

The red haired boy stood there in front of Ollivander. Flanking him at either side were his two friends, the frizzy haired girl, and the boy with the scar and glasses.

“I’ve never seen you here before,” Ollivander said. “I know everyone I’ve sold a wand to.”

“That’s because I’ve never been here, this is my first,” Ronald said. He added under his breath, “My last wand was actually a hand me down.”

“Pity. A wand only works best for it’s own master,” the old gentleman said smiling kindly.

There was a shuffle of boxes and the search was begun.

20. Hogsmeade

Ottery was hanging off of Ron’s left arm, while Hermione walked on his right, and Harry next to her tried to be inconspicuous under the invisibility cloak. He wasn’t supposed to be in Hogsmeade what with the loose killer about, Sirius Black.

But it wasn’t Harry’s first trip to Hogsmeade.

“So where do you want to go first, Ron?” Ottery asked.

Hermione rolled her eyes, “I need a new quill.”

“Let’s go to Honeydukes then,” a third voice answered, Harry from under his cloak.

“Sugar quills, Hermione,” Ron explained.

She gave him a withering glance. Of course she’d known that.

22. Kneazle

“Crookshanks is part kneazle,” Hermione explained.

“So he’s not pure bred. Didn’t think you’d care about stuff like that,” Ron said to Hermione a bit surprised.

“I don’t think that’s what she meant, mate.” Harry added.

Ron turned in time to catch sight of Hermione’s ever-popular eye roll. Ron sighed but bit his tongue. She did know-it-all after all.

“What I meant is, they can find things.” Ron and Harry looked at her with puzzled looks. “Like horcruxes.”

“Oh right, I knew that,” Ron said.

She let out a slow breath and kissed him on the cheek. “Sure you did.”

23. Telescope

Harry didn’t exactly know or care why Professor Sinistra had asked the fifth year students to join Harry’s class that night for night observation but he didn’t care. Dean and Ginny were not talking so she had asked to share his telescope with him, while Dean played with Seamus, happily, it seemed.

“And that’s the planet Mars,” Hermione was explaining to Ron next to them. Lavender was standing in front of Parvati’s telescope glaring angrily.

“You don’t say?” Ron was telling Hermione, but he was clearly more interest in the star in her eyes than the planets in the sky.

26. Quill

“You will write Mr. St. Catchpole, ‘Quills are not weapons’ five thousand times on the board,” Ron said, in a brilliant imitation of the Potions Master. “Without magic.”

The dark haired boy sat red faced as far down as possible in his chair.

“Oh leave off Ron,” Hermione said, “Poor Ottery.”

“Do you think essence of murtlap might work?” Harry asked Hermione. The boy’s hand was clearly in pain.

“It’s for cuts more than for muscles.”

“Cheer up Otts,” Ron said looking down at him as he stood behind the boy’s chair, “You only owe Snape nine hundred more lines.”

27. Owl

“I don’t see how an owl could be dangerous,” Ron said sitting down at the Gryffindor Table.

“Don’t be dense Ron. Of course they could be dangerous. They could be made to carry an explosive device or worse some kind of spell so that when someone received it they’d die,” Hermione added.

Harry glared up at the Professor’s table where their Defense teacher sat, like a toad glaring down at all the students.

“Yeah, like a spell to turn people into toads,” Harry said angrily. He didn’t like that they were now inspecting all the owls entering and leaving Hogwarts.
