#49: Yule Ball

“Why in the world would they call it the Yule Ball if that’s only for the Triwizard Tournament?” I raved as I dressed.

“It’s because since the Tournament has been off for all these years, they don’t think they should deprive us of a night of fun. I don’t think you should complain,” my friend explained, yanking her dress on.

I thought about it for a moment. “Alright, I won’t complain.”

I was to meet Lucius at the Yule Ball for some unknown reason. When I looked in by myself, I saw that it was magnificent. The décor was beautiful!

#57: Gape

I knew that I looked like a vision of beauty; it was the Slytherin pride I had about me whenever I primped up like this. My hair was perfect, half up in loose curls, my dress a light silver tinted with blue, and my figure more than could be asked for.

When Lucius saw me, he simply gaped. He looked dashing himself in robes of black with a hint of dark green.

“Wow. You look stunning, Narcissa,” he complimented, unable to stop gaping. He held out his arm and I took it. We entered the Great Hall with utmost poise.

#31: Dress robes

As we swayed to the slow music, it was my turn to flatter. “Those dress robes look very becoming on you,” I gushed, trailing my hands down his robe collar. “I like how it’s more…contemporary.” My eyes flitted to one Ravenclaw boy whose robes were lacey and smelled like mothballs.

Lucius snorted. “I know what you mean,” he said. “Some people just can’t get into the fashion,” he commented louder so that the Ravenclaw heard it. I sniggered.

“But really, your dress robes are the finest by far at this ball,” I confirmed, glimpsing around superiorly at the lesser robes.

#98: Pajamas

Once in the warm common room, Lucius ran up to his dormitory, came down again, and produced a package for me. I’d given him his Christmas present a few days ago; he’d wanted to get it early.

“Merry Christmas,” he said, giving me his sly wink. “Open it.”

My fingers tingled excitedly as I peeled back the exquisite wrapping paper. Underneath were pajamas; more specifically, it was a gorgeous nightdress. “Oh…wow, thank you so much!” I held it up to me to see that it was a perfect fit.

“Striking,” Lucius commented, wrapping his arms around me in an embrace.

#11: History of Magic

History of Magic was easily the more boring class of all of them, even Muggle Studies. I don’t know how Professor Binns managed to get a job here. He didn’t teach us a thing.

Lucius and I were nearly snoozing at the back of the classroom as Binns went on about the founding of the Ministry of Magic. I noticed Lucius scribbling on a piece of paper. He discreetly slid it over to me. It simply read:

Let’s go for a midnight walk tonight.

Smiling at the notion, I gave a small nod and resumed my I’m-listening-to-every-owrd-you’re-saying face towards Binns.

#42: Portraits

At the stroke of midnight, I rushed down the stairs clad in a sparkly nightgown I’d received from Lucius.

His silver-blonde head was already in there. He looked up when he heard the pattering of footsteps. “Let’s go.”

Portraits were still whispering at this hour. I heard our names crop up in their conversations. Lucius put a finger to his fine lips. We stopped and listened.

“You must’ve noticed that platinum blonde couple,” an older witch portrait was saying to a fat lady. “Very handsome couple. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw their children in these halls one day.”

#30: Feast

The end-of-year feast was upon us and signaled our last year at Hogwarts. I was relieved that I finally was out of here. I didn’t plan to work again.

The tables were laden with all kinds of delicacies and foodstuffs. My stomach grumbled just looking at them. I couldn’t wait to start eating.

“It’s time to announce that with four hundred and twenty points, Slytherin has won the House Cup!” Dumbledore declared.

Our house cheered. Lucius bent over to me and whispered, “Looks like despite all the detentions we got we still won.” I agreed and tucked into the food.

#93: Chicken

“Mmm…look how big that chicken is! It’s honestly the biggest one I’ve seen…and that’s saying a lot, since the Malfoy family prides on having the biggest chickens,” Lucius commented as he tried to yank a drumstick out of the fowl.

I giggled. “This one is really big. I’m a huge chicken fan myself. My mother doesn’t like it much, though, so we don’t have it that often.”

“You better have lots this evening, then.” Lucius took a bite-sized portion with his fork and fed it to me. “Is it any good, Cissy?”

“Scrumptious,” I said. It was roasted just perfect.

#94: Allergic

“Yeah, my mum is allergic to chicken for some reason but we still have big chickens. She just gets the house elves to make her another meal,” Lucius explained, snickering.

He offered me some pumpkin juice from his cup.

“No thanks,” I told him. “I’m allergic.” To make up for it, I chewed on a large chicken wing.

Lucius looked disappointed. “Well, you’re missing out. At least you’re not allergic to fire whiskey. That stuff’s the best. Have you tried it?”

I shook my head.

Lucius got that mischievous gleam in his eye again. “You have to try it sometime.”

A few years later

#66: Pace

I was visiting the luxurious Malfoy residence for a month. Lucius and I had been going strong in our relationship even after Hogwarts. At this moment, I was sitting in the garden, watching the fountain spew water in delicate formations.

Lucius was behind me, pacing and mumbling. It was as if he were rehearsing an act. I could hear this footsteps, slower then faster then slower, on the veranda. What is he doing? I wondered, but decided not to ask when he was in such deep concentration.

“Okay, I’m coming,” Lucius finally announced. His voice sounded less confident than usual.

#78: Author’s Choice – Proposal

“Finally,” I commented as he stepped out into the sunlight. “I was wondering when you’d spend some time with me.”

Lucius grinned and in a fluid motion bent down on one knee in front of me. “Cissy, I love you more than anyone else on this earth. Will you marry me?”

My eyes popped wide at this. I’d replayed this moment over and over again in my head, but when it actually came, it hit me like a tidal wave.

“Cissy?” Lucius looked worried.

“Oh. Yes, of course!” I giggled as he slipped the most elegant ring on my finger.

Family Life

#47: Portkey

“Come on, Draco, we must hurry,” Lucius called our son.

Draco scurried down the stairs. “I’m here.”

I ruffled his hair fondly. “Put your hand on the portkey, dear. We musn’t be late for the Qudditch World Cup.” Placing my fair hand gingerly on the broken watch, I made sure Draco did the same.

“One…two…three…” Lucius counted and I felt like I was being pulled forward. There was a whooshing sensation in my stomach but before I could contemplate our feet had reached solid ground.

Arranging my hair, I gazed around as Lucius worked out the necessities with the coordinator.

#21: Veela

Draco nestled himself between Lucius and I before the final match was about to begin. Soon the mascots were presenting themselves. For Bulgaria, a whole line of Veela were doing their dance.

They were swaying, drifting, and they were going faster and faster. I remained very unimpressed at their foolish moves. Who’d want to watch them? Well, men, I supposed. Wrinkling my nose, I turned to the two others.

“Don’t look at them, Draco and Lucius,” I warned stiffly, covering Draco’s eyes.

Lucius gave me a wry smile and averted his eyes. “Is that better, darling?”

I nodded my endorsement.

#48: Leprechaun

Once the veela exited, it was Ireland’s turn to show their talent. Leprechauns zoomed over the crowds, showering everyone with money. I thought this was a cute antic, though I knew that the galleons they were handing out would disappear soon.

Draco’s eyes lit up happily as he pushed others to get some money. I pulled him down. “It’s not real, son. It’s not real money.”

He scowled (just like his father) and settled back down in his seat, uninterested for the time being.

“Look at those lovely shamrocks, though,” I pointed out.

Lucius looked up momentarily. “They’re quite amusing.”

#45: Torch

“Take this torch, Draco,” Lucius ordered, thrusting a sleek device into Draco’s outstretched hand. Our tent was much bigger than everyone else’s; Lucius insisted that it look big on the outside as well, not just on the inside. He favored outward appearance, anyways, and so did I.

We trooped back to the campsite holding the torch. It was surprisingly illuminating, much better than the one Muggles used.

“How is it so bright?” I asked Lucius as we followed Draco’s pale hair. I glanced curiously at it.

He raised an eyebrow, just like he used to. “It’s called magic, dear. Magic.”

#39: Duel

I couldn’t watch as Lucius dueled with another death eater. I didn’t see why they had to practice on each other; after all, they were on the same side, weren’t they? Why couldn’t they practice on others not devoted to the Dark Lord? It was folly.

Hexes and curses were being hurled back and forth, accompanied by ‘booms’ and ‘crashes’.

“Take that, Dolohov!” Lucius yelled, sending a hex to his partner. “See if you can—“

Lucius was thrown back and landed on the floor, skidding to a stop a few feet from where he was before. He was bleeding.

#65: Ooze

“Stop! Stop it!” I shrieked, running towards Lucius, who was moaning loudly on the hard floor. “I’ll tend to you, Lucius, hang on…”

Dolohov was chortling to himself until I shot him a look of utmost disdain. He immediately stopped and wandered elsewhere.

I dragged Lucius to the side where a stock of magical bandages and other medical ailments lay. The blood was oozing from him at an alarming speed. I muttered some spells to ease the pain and stop the thick blood flow. I took his cold, clammy hand in mine. “I’ll stick with you, Lucius, don’t forget that.”

#71: Untie

A few days later I sensed that the wound had fully healed. “Time to untie that bandage,” I informed Lucius, who was lounging on the dragonhide sofa in one of the living rooms.

“Do I have to?” he groaned, examining his arm. “Are you sure it’s fully healed by now?”

I crossed my arms. “Do you doubt my healing skills?”

He looked like he was about to say ‘yes’, but muttered, “No.”

Eyeing him suspiciously, I walked over and gingerly untied the bandage. When I uncovered the cut, there was only a thin scar. “See, what did I tell you?

#56: Fight

“Lucius, I think you should spend more time at home, especially with Draco,” I suggested one day while sipping some fire whiskey.

He looked at me abruptly. “My duty is to be under the service of the Dark Lord.” That fierce and stubborn look on his face almost made me cringe. How was I going to convince him that he was too consumed in this?

I started, “Yes, but—“

“No, you don’t know anything about this subject, Narcissa!” Lucius jumped up from the small table we were sitting at. He looked furious now. Even the house elves scuttled away.

#68: Roar

I tried again. “I’m just saying—“

“NO!” Lucius roared, knocking the bottle of fire whisky over. It fell to the marble floor with a crash. I jumped away from the mess. “My allegiance is to the Dark Lord and him alone! Family comes second to that.”

Shaken by his words and the bottle that lay in shards on the floor, I ordered the house elves to come over and clean it up. Fear in their eyes, they quickly discarded all the glass and wiped up all the remaining fire whisky.

“Lucius—“

“DON’T!” He roared once more, and stalked out.

#85: Snappish

After our heated fight, I fell into a very bad mood. I felt that needed to snap at something, so I sent the house elves to work on everything imaginable. I took joy in pointing out every little thing they did wrong and made them start all over again.

Draco trudged down the stairs, his blonde hair in disarray. “Mother…”

“What?” I snapped, ordering some house elves to tend to the garden gnomes.

“What were you and Father talking about?” He asked timidly.

I glared at him. “Nothing that you need to know,” I growled, and then sent him upstairs.

#79: Author’s Choice - Peace

The next few days were tense between not only Lucius and I, but Draco as well. He didn’t do his usual complaining or moping about.

On the fifth day of silence, Lucius pulled me aside after he sent Draco somewhere. “Look, Narcissa, let’s just forget about what happened, okay?”

I pursed my lips. “I just want everything to be normal and how it used to be,” I whispered.

“This way, it will,” Lucius assured me, and did something he hadn’t done for a while: he gathered me in his arms and gave me a hug. That’s when I felt peace.

Dark Times

#81: Depression

Lucius is in Azkaban. Those words haunted me in my waking and in my sleeping. How was I going to survive without him here to organize everything, to take care of bills, and to simply be here?

The house was now silent. There was no talk of the news, no ordering of house elves, nothing. It depressed me greatly. Would he get out in time to see Draco grow into a man? How could he have done such a thing to us? Yes, his loyalty lay with the Dark Lord, but did he think about the trauma he was causing?

#83: Fearful

I just went from bad to worse. Draco had been summoned to become a Death Eater and do the Dark Lord’s bidding. I knew that Lord Voldemort’s wrath would be terrible to behold. I offered myself, but he wouldn’t take it. He took hold of my son. And now he had to pay the price of what Lucius did to us by killing Dumbledore.

What if Draco didn’t succeed? What horrors awaited him? I was fearful for his life and his father’s. I didn’t want my life to turn out this way. It was anything but a happily ever after.
