#18: Whomping Willow

Something tickled my cheek. “Stop it, Lucius!” I giggled. But when I looked behind me, it wasn’t him. It was a little tree branch connected to a very big branch.

“Lucius?” I called, standing up and backing away from the tree. I saw him laying on the ground, a scratch on his arm. The time-turner lay limply in his hand. It was then that the tree started moving.

I screamed and dashed towards Lucius, pulling him away from the tree’s wrath. It had scraped my neck and thumped me with branches, but at least I’d saved Lucius from something worse.

#37: Animagus

Lucius groaned and I shushed him. “I’ll take care of it,” I assured him and took the time-turner. I gave it a weak spin. We were in the same place; it was now nighttime.

Four figures came out of Hogwarts. I shrunk into the shadows, hiding Lucius’ body and hoping that our hair wouldn’t illuminate the full moon’s glow.

“Go, Wormtail,” a masculine voice said, and then one of the figures shrank. I couldn’t make out what it was, but it scurried to the tree and the tree stopped moving. Two others transformed; they were animagi! I couldn’t believe it.

#44: Ford Anglia

When all of the figures disappeared under the willow, I spun the time-turner again. This time, it traveled even faster. When it stopped, it was evening. How would we get back at this rate? What if we never found the way back to our time?

Pushing the nagging thoughts from my mind, I was about to spin when…

CRASH!!!

I screamed. A car driven by a little boy with a redhead beside him collided with the willow. Instantly, branches came bearing down on them. I felt sorry for them, but remembered that I had to get back to my time.

#89: Past

Frantically, I spun the time-turner around as much as I could. Now I knew we were going to the past. My head felt dizzy with all the movement and then everything went black.

When I awoke, the time-turner lay askew. I had no idea how far we’d gone into the past. Lucius stirred and sat up groggily. “Now where are we?” He murmured, resting his head on my shoulder.

A troop of first years walked to Hogwarts. I could see a girl and a boy, both with light blonde hair…

“It’s us as first years!” I exclaimed, watching in fascination.

#90: Present

Lucius took the time-turner from me. “I think it’s time to get back now…” While I waited for him to calculate how many turns we needed, I watched us go into the castle for the first time.

“Got it,” Lucius announced, gathering me close to him and laying the chain over us. He spun the hourglass too many times to count and soon enough, we were back at Hogwarts at present time. Relief flooded through me. Clutching Lucius unsteadily, I stumbled with him into the castle. When our friends asked about our cuts, we just replied, ”Major snogging session outside.”

#43: Headmaster

“The Headmaster wishes to see you, Miss. Black and Mr. Malfoy,” Professor McGonagall informed us curtly in Transfiguration. “Right now.”

Professor Dumbledore was by the gargoyles when we approached. “Ah, you two. Please follow me.”

When we reached his office, he sat down and touched the tips of his fingers together. “I seem to have…misplaced a valuable trinket of mine.”

“And why would we care?” Lucius spat.

Ignoring his rudeness, Dumbledore continued calmly. “Where is it?”

“We don’t have anything of yours,” Lucius lied without even blushing.

Dumbledore paused. “Very well, then.” But I knew he didn’t believe a word.

#6: Divination

“Palmistry is an ancient art,” our misty professor told us as she handed out textbooks. “You and a partner will try to decipher what messages lay in your own hands.”

The class organized itself into partners. Of course, Lucius and I paired up.

Lucius went first, taking my hand. His thumb rubbed against my palm soothingly. He pretended to think as the professor drifted past. “You have nice hands.”

Saying nothing, I held his larger hand in mine. Professor was watching us, so I was forced to peer at the book’s legend. “You will have one boy and…that’s about it.”

#13: Quidditch

“Go Slytherin Go!” I screamed, waving a huge banner. My friends yelled along with me.

When the Slytherin team stepped onto the pitch, uproarious cheers came from our side of the stadium. In my eyes, we drowned them out with our cheers.

I could see a very blonde head there and that arm waving at me. Enthusiastically, I waved back and blew a kiss.

Soon the match started: Slytherin vs. Hufflepuff. We took a commanding lead in the first twenty minutes, then Hufflepuff caught up. The last ten minutes was extremely stressful, but in the end Lucius caught the snitch!

#15: Broom

Following the success of his match, Lucius taught me how to ride a broom—properly. He felt it an essential that girls know how to ride well, and I’d never ridden brooms except during flying lessons.

“Don’t be scared to nudge it forward,” he encouraged me. “Let it know you’re the boss.”

For a demonstration, I sat behind him. I was terrified because I thought I’d slip off the end of the stick. But no matter how hard I held him around the waist, Lucius didn’t complain. In the end, I think I gleaned a bit more about flying broom.

#20: Hogsmeade

Lucius and I ambled down the street in Hogsmeade, mainly window-shopping. The cold air was making me shiver. A few crusty snowflakes had begun to fall, blanketing the village in a translucent covering.

We walked past Gladrag’s Wizardwear and my eyes lingered on a few handsome dress robes on display. Lucius was looking at them as well; they were certainly eye-catching.

“Let’s go somewhere,” I suggested through chattering teeth.

“Madam Puddifoot’s is too lame. Let’s go somewhere hard-core…the Hog’s Head,” Lucius suggested, pulling be down the street.

“Oh…okay.” I learned that I wasn’t in the place to argue with him.

#26: Quill

Scrivenshaft’s Quill Shop was the best for supplies. When I commented that I needed a new quill, Lucius guided me to that store and marched up to the counter. “What’s the best quill you can offer?” he asked.

Meekly, the shopkeeper pointed out an eagle quill and peacock quill. My eyes automatically went to the peacock-plumaged one.

“Oh, it’s so beautiful!” I cooed. I looked at the price tag and my smile drooped. I didn’t bring that much to Hogsmeade.

“Here, let me pay for it,” Lucius offered, throwing a few galleons, knuts, and sickles onto the counter and winking.

#88: Sweet tooth

“What about Honeydukes next?” Lucius proposed, already heading in that direction. My quill bag bounced against my leg.

As we entered the warm, aroma-filled shop, I warmed up quickly. The shelves were lined with candies all suitable for my aching sweet tooth.

Lucius bought a lot for both of us.

“Can we eat it now?” I asked, looking longingly at the purchases.

He gave me an amused look and opened the bag. I picked out an Every Flavor Bean and popped it into my mouth. Oh, how good it tasted! There was no better place to maintain my sweet tooth.

#92: Chocolate

The street was looking half empty so we decided to sit down outside for the fresh air.

“Here, try some chocolate. I have it in stick form, chip form, block form, anything you want.” Lucius offered me the bag.

I took a handful of chips. “Lucius, catch this.” I tossed a chip into the air and he caught it with his mouth, making it look extremely easy. I giggled as he wriggled his eyebrows and licked his lips.

People gave us curious glances on the street as we tossed chocolate to each other, but did we really care? No way.

#87: Plaid

After spending half an hour in the cold, my ears and neck were starting to freeze off. Lucius seemed to notice this as well.

“Wait here. I’ll get you a scarf.” He handed me the half-empty candy bag and dawdled to the street, attempting to look innocent. A rowdy crowd of Gryffindors came rumbling down the street. Lucius, as fast as quicksilver, plucked a red-and-gold scarf from an unsuspecting victim.

Quickly, he transformed it into a plaid scarf so they couldn’t accuse him of stealing. “You’re bad!” I teased, laughing as he wrapped it around me. “But I’m not complaining.”

#16: Dragonhide Gloves

“Happy Birthday to you,” the Slytherins sang in less than beautiful voices. Lucius was in the center, looking smug and happy. Everyone cheered and clapped when the song was done.

“Happy seventeenth birthday, Lucius,” I whispered in his ear, climbing over the sofa and sitting in his lap. I gave him a parcel and waited in anticipation as he opened it.

In it lay the most expensive Dragonhide gloves on the market. Lucius’ light eyes widened with pleasure. “Awesome pick, Cissy.” He outstretched his hands so I could put them on him. They looked like they were fit for royalty.

#22: Kneazle

At my parents’ request, Lucius came to visit the manor so they could give their approval. The moment they met him, they gave their undivided consent.

As I showed him around the mansion, a fluffy mass twined around me. I looked down to see Jem, my pet Kneazle. “Hey, baby.” I fussed over her spotted fur. “This is Lucius,” I introduced, hoping that even Jem would like him. I didn’t want her to be aggressive towards my boyfriend.

To my delight, when Lucius bent down to scratch her head, she purred. It seemed everyone in the Black manor loved him.

#24: House elf

Perhaps there was one who didn’t like Lucius. It was Slinker, our main house elf. When his eyes met Lucius’, he started muttering mutinously.

“Greet Lucius, Slinker!” I demanded, arms crossed.

Slinker stopped in his tracks and looked as if he were about to defy me, but bowed low and addressed Lucius. “Welcome, Mr. Malfoy.”

“At least your house elf behaves,” Lucius told me. “My house elf, Dobby, isn’t the typical house elf. He’s a rebel at heart.”

I was glad that I didn’t have to deal with that house elf. I didn’t know I’d have to in the future.

#96: Socks

We soon got bored of walking through the echoing hallways of my house, so terrorizing Slinker was starting to appeal to us. Lucius had that glean in his eye as he took some socks from my drawer.

Creeping down the staircase, I called, “Slinker!” He popped into view.

Lucius wiggled a sock. “Do you want this?”

Slinker eyed it uncertainly, then grabbed for it. Lucius was too quick. He jerked it away and gave it to me.

I dangled it in front of Slinker’s eyes. “Don’t grab it, Slinker,” I sneered. How fun it was to bully an inferior race!

#36: Muggle

Since our tormenting phase had worn off quickly, we decided to get some Muggle exposure. We went out to a busy London street with numerous shops.

“Wow, how can they bear transporting so slow?” I muttered, my eyes on a traffic jam far off. “They are so deprived.”

Lucius nodded. “They don’t even have self-correcting quills or anything. They’ve got to do it themselves. Look at them! They must be terrified that someone’s going to attack them, going around without wands!”

A few Muggles standing beside us gave us uncanny looks and shuffled in another direction. This made us chortle.

Seventh year

#38: Patronus

DADA was getting harder and harder now that we were in our final year. Our past professors in DADA were poor, so our skills weren’t up to standard.

“Let’s see your patronuses,” our new professor ordered.

We looked at each other, gulping. We’d barely practiced that last year. The most progress made before was a whiff of substance.

“Get to it!”

Lucius tried first: “Expecto Patronum!” To our surprise, he did it! A silvery snake shot from his wand.

Next I tried. I said the incantation and a wobbly catlike creature sprung out. Lucius’ approving smile made it worth it.

#50: Boggart

The next lesson was easier, as we’d practiced dealing with Boggarts back in third year. When it was my turn, my wand at hand was shaking slightly; I couldn’t help it. I didn’t know what to expect.

Then the boggart leapt from the wardrobe it was previously in.

I screamed. On the floor lay a dead and bloody Lucius, his breath coming short and clothes dirty. I looked around but saw the real Lucius looking at the boggart.

“Ridikulus!” I yelled, and immediately the boggart was driven back. From that I learned who was the most important to me now.

#52: Bore

History of Magic was a bore, as usual. Since nearly all the Slytherins in my year had just gotten detention for trying to sneak out of class (apparently Binns wasn’t as out of it as we thought) we were restrained to our desks.

The clock ticked by. I held my breath as every second passed. My eyes started to droop. How did they make this subject teachable in schools? All I knew was that I’d never be a professor. Why would anyone want to come back to school when they’d been in it for their whole life already? Crazy people.

#97: Dictionary

For Muggle Studies we were imitating a Muggle school for a week. Unfortunately, this meant looking up words in a dictionary for ‘English’ class or whatever they called it. Lucius and I sat by the Slytherin fire pouring through the world’s thickest dictionary.

“Next word on the list…’jabberwocky’. That’s a word?!?” I stared at the list in disbelief. “Muggles come up with the most messed up words.”

Lucius nodded and I gave him a tap on the shoulder to keep him awake. He grunted. “I’ll take the next shift, okay?”

“Fine.” I turned back to the dictionary. “Schizophrenia…some Muggle disease…”

#64: Nap

I couldn’t concentrate on this stupid Muggle assignment. Looking at the deep green clock, I saw that it was one o’clock in the morning: Lucius’ shift. When I turned to tell him, he was sleeping so deeply and looked so serene that I didn’t want to disturb him; I just wanted to stare at his beautiful, angular features forever.

Kissing his smooth cheek lightly, I closed the dictionary on ‘quindecillion’ and leaned on his shoulder. He felt warm and comfortable. Burying my face into his cloak, I felt drowsiness take me. “Only a short nap…” I murmured, already half asleep.
