#74: X-tinguish

“I can’t believe this!” I declared exasperatingly and drew my wand. Those other Slytherin idiots obviously had forgotten that they weren’t Muggles.

Aiming at the flaming Slytherin, I used the same spell Lucius had used on me last year. A gush of water shot out of the tip and in a matter of seconds the fire was extinguished.

“Next time, keep your wand away from the fire,” I told Goyle and huffed back to my dormitory. My dress smelled of soot now. I wondered why I even helped. Maybe because I didn’t want to see the common room burn down.

#40: Spell

Trouble was an understatement with Slytherins. I learned that first hand when I was innocently walking down the hallways to lunch.

“Hey, Narcissa, look at this!” Lucius’ voice floated to me. Interested, I peered around the corner and stopped beside him.

“What?”

“See what Darius here can do after I put him under a spell I made up,” he said in a jeering voice, taking out a bag of dead flies. He threw one into the air and Darius caught it with his tongue, swallowed, and made frog noises.

I couldn’t help but laugh. Hufflepuffs never learned from past mistakes.

#46: Dungeon

“Miss. Black, Mr. Malfoy, I believe that is against the rules,” Professor McGonagall pronounced sternly, her eyebrows contracting together. She ordered Darius to be taken to the hospital wing.

“We were simply...” Lucius began, but Professor cut him off.

“Detention. You will serve them in the dungeons tonight at eight o’clock. I don’t want any excuses.” She eyed Lucius’ mouth that was about to protest, then briskly walked away.

I groaned. “I didn’t even do anything! Now I have to spend a whole hour cleaning with you.”

I swear I could see the shadow of a smirk on Lucius’ face.

#10: Arithmancy

Arithmancy was a pain in the neck lately. Numbers didn’t make sense to me whatsoever; I preferred Transfiguration. Complicated charts and figures loomed in front of me and I had no idea where to start.

Moaning, I rested my head on my fists and shut my eyes.

“Need help again?” Lucuis asked. Why was he always…everywhere?

“No.” I was in a crabby mood. Numbers didn’t belong in the wizarding world, I concluded, except for sums of money.

“Okay, if you say so…” Was his voice mocking me?

Who cared if I failed Arithmancy? Wait, I did. “Okay, fine. Help me.”

#27: Owl

The chilly air nipped at my ears as I made my way to the Owlery. I ascended the stone steps and entered the musky-smelling building.

“Diamond!” I called my owl. She came obediently onto my arm. “Take this to Mother…”

“Look who’s here,” Lucius’ slick voice reached my ears.

I turned around. “Are you stalking me?”

He chuckled. “No.” Sauntering towards his owl, he also tied a note to its right leg. “This is Bling. He’s eight years old today.”

I said, “Happy Birthday,” to Bling and released Diamond to the sky. Bling took flight and they flew away together.

Sixth Year

#14: Hogwarts, A History

My eyes skimmed the library book shelf. “Now, where is Hogwarts, A History?” I asked, urging myself to find it before the others in my year did.

Then I spotted it. Its ratty cover stood out from the other texts. The problem was, it was on a high shelf, just above my reach. I was about to summon it with my wand when a hand grabbed my wrist.

“Allow me,” Lucius said, reaching up easily and handing it to me.

“Why are you being so nice?” I couldn’t help but ask.

Lucius only cocked a slim eyebrow and walked away.

#34: Parseltongue

I daintily descended the stairs from my dormitory early one morning. When I heard hisses, I stopped at the stair I was at and squinted down at the figure on the sofa.

It was Lucius. In his hands was a snake coiling itself around his arms. I bit down a scream. Lucius was talking to it, or at least that’s how it looked like.

“You…you can speak parseltongue?” I asked, awed.

Lucius nodded, still hissing. “It’s perfectly harmless,” he informed me, holding the snake out.

I still recoiled. Lucius had aspects about him I didn’t know, but I liked it.

#35: Pureblood

A group of us ‘cool’ Slytherins reclined by the fireplace one weekend, munching on candy.

“As I was saying, they really shouldn’t have mudbloods in this school,” Lucius declared. “It’s not right.”

I nodded in understanding. “They are just about as useless as Muggles. They don’t deserve to be treated the same way as magic people like us, who have grown up in the whole culture.” Several of the Slytherins nodded.

“My thoughts exactly,” Lucius agreed, helping himself to a Chocolate Frog. He leaned closer to me and said something that curiously made me shiver pleasantly. “Great minds think alike.”

#12: Charms

Nowadays Lucius always found a way sit by me in every class we had together. Since I’d nursed a crush on him for a little over two years now, this arrangement suited me just fine. I forced myself to forget the betrayed faces of my friends; I was with Lucius, and that’s all that mattered.

In charms we were doing anything but the enlargement charm. Lucius was ridiculing Flitwick’s size.

Lucius flicked his wand idly in Professor’s direction. With a whizzing noise, Flitwick zoomed backwards and hit the wall.

“Oops…sorry, Professor,” Lucius apologized. Of course, he was anything but sorry.

#1: Herbology

“Okay, class, the mandrakes are trying to move into each other’s pots, a sign that now they are fully mature. Our job today is to help them in this process.” Our Herbology professor went on and on about the procedure.

Lucius, beside me, rolled his eyes at her droning speech. When she finally instructed us to put on the earmuffs, Lucuis looked happier. He nabbed another student’s black earmuffs for himself since he didn’t want to be stuck with pink, fluffy ones. I grabbed a random pair and shoved them over my ears, bracing myself with Lucius’ hand on mine.

#3: Transfiguration

Lucius huffed and tried waving his wand elaborately at the parrot he was attempting to turn into a lamp. We had to do this non-verbally, so it was harder. “It’s not working,” he grumbled, glaring at his wand.

“You don’t need such a wide flick,” I reminded him. “A brisk one will do better.” I gave him an example and in a second turned my parrot into a glossy lamp.

He tried it again. And again. And again. Nothing happened. Throwing down his wand in frustration, he whispered, “I wish we could just trop this class and do something more…exciting.”

#5: Astronomy

“This is…cozier,” Lucius purred in my ear as we shared the same telescope just like we had before. He wrapped an arm around my waist as I flipped my blonde hair over my back.

I placed my eye to adjust the telescope correctly, but found it challenging with Lucius’ fingers drumming slowly on my thigh. His lips brushed my cheekbone.

“Alright, I give up,” I announced to him. “You’re too distracting,” I teased.

“And that’s a good thing, right?” He asked, moving closer to my face.

“Yeah…” I murmured.

Our professor interrupted us. “Please stick to the topic!” He commanded.

#7: Care of Magical Creatures

“Okay, everyone, pair up and grab a niffler. I’ve placed shiny objects around the grounds. The pair with the most objects gets a bonus mark each,” our Care of Magical Creatures professor announced, opening a gate consisting of numerous animals with snouts.

Lucius nabbed my hand. “Let’s get one and win.”

He shoved people out of his way and in a few moments came back with the biggest niffler I’d ever seen. I attached a leash to it and we were off.

Thirty-five minutes later we were called back to see who were the winners. We won by a landslide.

#41: Thestrals

I peered into the forest. I couldn’t see anything. “What are they?” I demanded.

“These are Thestrals. You only see them if you’ve seen someone die.” Professor explained. “Maybe you and Mr. Malfoy would like to ride one.”

I withdrew, but Lucius held my hand firmly. He was one to not show his fear. “We’ll both ride one,” he proclaimed, striding forward.

As we mounted the invisible back, he whispered, “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.”

The ride was terrifyingly brilliant. When I landed once more on solid earth I was relieved but thankful that I’d let Lucius lead the way.

#61: Kiss

We were moseying down the busy hallway. Our free period was next so we were in no hurry. Lucius’ hand had found my own like usual, which wasn’t a surprise.

“Lucius,” I said in an undertone, “Why do you like me?”

He stopped and looked into my eyes. “You’re hot.” We laughed. “And you’re a good kisser.”

My heart nearly stopped. “And how do you know that?”

“I will know that soon, won’t I?”

Before I had time to think about what was happening, his lips were on mine. I hoped I reached his standard because he sure reached mine.

#77: Cheerful

That day went by the quickest I’ve ever experienced. The kiss lingered on my lips the whole day; other students looking at Lucius or me would have to agree we did look cheerful for a change. Others couldn’t blame lack of happiness on us, though. They didn’t need to divide house elf duties on a regular basis. No, Lucius and I had it quite tough at times.

During class, my mind floated form the room and drifted in the clouds. Lucius would give me sly winks from time to time that would wind me up again. Oh, this was heavenly.

#51: Act

For Muggle Studies (how I detested that class) we had to get into groups and formulate a play that depicted what an area of Muggle-living was like. My group picked the kitchen because this class was right before lunch and that’s all we were thinking about.

My acting, was very poor. I kept saying the wrong thing and calling the colander “co-land”. Thankfully, Lucius did not blow up at me. He, having the part of the table, whispered lines to me when needed.

Overall, our acting was okay and I think we got a decent grade, perhaps even an ‘Acceptable’.

#4: Ancient Runes

The relationship between Lucius and I couldn’t have been better. Since we were both taking Ancient Runes and both were gifted at it, he would write me notes in the original runes. I would spend all class solving the message.

Once, the professor caught me. “What are you reading, Miss. Black? Please hold it up.”

Hoping that I would be spared detention, I held up the jumble of runes and to my relief his beam was nothing short of the sun’s brightness. From that moment on he allowed me to communicate in ancient runes, since everyone else was sleeping anyway.

#9: Defense Against the Dark Arts

DADA was a completely different matter. As Lucius and I were always sitting together, we’d get paired up to practice hexes on each other. Today it was “stupefy” and “ennervate”.

I attempted the hex first. After a few tries, I succeeded.

Lucius tried it on me, but nothing happened. He tried again, yelling, “Stupidfy!” Before I could correct his wrong pronunciation. He caught on, though, when my nose started bleeding from his hex.

“Uggh!” I moaned, trying to stop the flow.

“Cissy, are you okay?” he asked, placing an arm around my shoulders. “I’ll take you to the hospital wing.”

#67: Quell

Lucius picked me up and rushed me through the hallways, whipping past other professors and lazy students. When he reached the hospital wing, I could feel his breath coming very quickly. He shouted for the school nurse, who came running out in a fluster.

She tended to me and gave me a clear potion to quell the blood flow. Lucius stayed by my bedside, hand gripping my hand tightly, but not too forcefully. I was grateful for his companionship. “I’ll stick with you, Cissy,” he murmured in my hair as he kissed the top of my head. “Don’t forget that.”

#29: Penseive

Once the nose-bleeding escapade blew over, Lucius and I were back to our normal selves. Now we had a habit of getting into trouble—together.

“I know the password to Dumbledore’s office,” he whispered to me one day right before dinner.

That evening we went into Dumbledore’s office all for the sake of bragging rights. When we entered his large, circular office, a bowl filled with a misty substance drew us in. We looked in.

“That’s odd,” I mumbled, intrigued. “I wonder what it does…” I bent lower and felt myself being pulled…but Lucius yanked me back just in time.

#28: Time-turner

“That was close. Don’t ever do that again,” Lucius warned in a very low undertone. I nodded out of fear. My heart was still palpitating.

My gaze shifted to something metallic hanging from a chain. An hourglass hung in the middle of the circular pendant.

“It’s a time-turner,” Lucius said in an awed voice. “I’ve only read about those…” Without hesitation, he took it and slipped it into his pocket. “If we need it later,” he explained.

We heard footsteps. Lucius grabbed me and we hid behind a large vase. There was a knock, a pause, and then retreating footsteps.

#82: Careful

My heart was beating very fast. I was pressed so tightly against Lucius that I could feel his heart throbbing as well.

“We’ve got to be careful,” Lucius whispered frantically, inching to the door and opening it a crack. Biting my lip, I slipped behind him. Footsteps echoes outside again. We hid behind the door, willing for them to pass by. To my relief, they did after a few seconds.

The coast was clear.

Carefully tiptoeing down the spiral staircase, we reached the bottom in one piece. When the door guarded by gargoyles opened for us, we ran for it.

#62: Lope

We’d just barely escaped from the Headmaster’s office. Skipping dinner, we loped past a several students back from dinner and ran for the nearest exit, which lead us outside. I followed Lucius as he ran and ran.

I didn’t dare look back. I just wanted to get as far away as possible. What if the person that the footsteps belonged to saw us? We were very easily spotted with our hair colour especially.

We were also fast runners. Both built on the slender side, our legs carried us faster and faster away from Hogwarts castle, but not off the grounds.

#91: Future

“Can we stop now?” I panted, clutching my side. My hand was sweaty in his. I hoped that he still had the time turner in all this running about.

Lucius slowed and came to a complete stop. He then threw the chain around both our necks. “Let’s go to the future, okay?”

He needn’t have asked
