Default NaNo Characters

Who's this? Who's this?

The stories we write usually feature characters in some way, no matter if they're human, elves, animals, creatures, plants, etc. They are there. They are generally the ones that drive the story. Maybe there's one main character, maybe there's multiple, maybe the story is just about a whole lot of different characters experiencing the same thing.

With NaNoWriMo fast approaching, we wanted to ask YOU about your approach to writing characters. Do you plan them out meticulously beforehand? Write ten pages about their background, going back to their great-great-grandparents? Do their cousins have names even though they're not even in the story? Or do you just start writing and see where it goes? This, right here, is the thread to discuss it. Maybe even give others advice if they ask for it. Or ask for advice yourself if you're stuck on planning out a character.

You may also post your biographies in here if you like, preferably under the [textcut] or [spoiler] tag. If you need further inspiration as to how biographies could look like, check out the amazing biographies in our SSRPG threads, such as this one or this one.

Make sure all posts follow the SnitchSeeker Site Rules, and specifically the Honeydukes Rules and for all graphics/images the Graphics Rules.

And, perhaps even more importantly, be considerate of and polite to others. Your process might work for YOU but that doesn't mean it's the one true way of coming up with characters. Everyone's approach is different, everyone's writing is different. This is the place to share your experiences.

There few times I've actually taken an 'outline' a little further, I've usually just started writing and then keep notes on things I've added to about the character so I remember later on that I mentioned they have a 'brother' or whatever it is so as to not confuse the details later.

I also tend to give my characters 'unusual' names, idk why, just something fun I like to do.

But since I also don't get very far and usually give up rather suddenly might be worth trying a different approach.

This might come as a shock to some people but my character creation process involves making incredibly detailed character biographies before I do anything else. So basically writing up their basic details and the personal history and any other relevant stuff such as events from before they were even born, like family history. There's usually... a lot of info to work from by the time I'm done. Most of it never even becomes relevant in terms of story content but it helps me to know all the ~behind the scenes~ stuff in terms of the character and how they react to certain things and why etc.

The problem is that this takes a LONG time, and I'm usually unwilling to compromise on it. That's why for NaNoWriMo I like to just write backstories/future stories/AU narratives about my existing RP characters, who already have... so many bios. I don't write those stories because I want to put them out there, but more of an exercise/to see if I can meet the word count and (more importantly) finish something and wrap up it all up properly (which I literally don't think I've ever managed to do). I rarely do my serious writing projects for NaNo unless it's a rough draft/guideline to see if it's a plot I want to stick with. If I decide that I do, then I revisit it later once I've gone just absolutely berserk with building the characters.

Anyway, yeah. So. I do the character building first, kind of meticulously tbh. I also find that when I work on a bio it gives me so much inspiration to write the character. I don't limit myself to only what I've established either; if something I didn't initially think of becomes evident while I'm writing later, I'll roll with it and just add it to the biography.

Most of my current characters are descendants of my first round of "kids" so their backgrounds are established already in terms of family history. Which means I mostly focus on how the influences of their families would influence them and which of their family members they would have been closest too, etc.

I know a lot in my head, but I've failed to write a lot of it down because for the site biographies I feel its just too much information (or cross over with related characters). So this year, I'm hoping to write a "Family History" style book of all of my family trees.. Explain the way that they actually intertwine etc. *crosses fingers*

Honestly, I'm famously good at not writing down bios at all. They're all in my head (and on random post-it notes hidden away all around my apartment). I think partly that's because I don't like writing the "personality" part of a biography but without it it looks like it's not FINISHED so in conclusion I just usually end up not writing it down at all unless I absolutely have to. I never feel like they do my character justice.
