| DeVito - Rickman Film Battles Rival for Calif. Vs French Wine Story (UPDATED) Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin! DeVito - Rickman Film Battles Rival for Calif. Vs French Wine Story
from Hollywood Today, August 1st, 2007
Could there be a new film coming for Alan? Quote:
HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today/AFP) 8/1/07 - The producers of two rival Hollywood films are locked in a nose-to-nose row over an infamous Paris wine-tasting event which embarrassed France’s top experts, a report said Wednesday.
Quote:
Now two films are being made about the debacle, one claiming to present the official version of events and another starring British actor Alan Rickman and reportedly Danny DeVito.
You can read the whole article at Hollywood Today.
Keep your eyes peeled, Rickmaniacs. Edit:
Alan and costars are currently filming in Sonoma for this project, called Bottle Shock. The IMDB entry for this film lists it as 'in production' and without a synopses. Edit Sep 4: Sonomanews.com reports that filming for Bottle shock wraps up this weekend. Quote:
Shooting wraps up this week, and Sonoma will return to a sleepy little town - forever immortalized on the big screen.
I wonder what's next on Mr. Rickman's plate.

| Rickman Fails to 'Make the List' Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From Britain's most powerful film stars in Hollywood at The Telegraph.co.uk on August 11, 2007
Chris Hastings' report on the who's who of powereful Brits in Hollywood points out the fact that big players in British film don't make the grade in Hollywood, earnings-wise. Listed among those who earned less than their countrymen in Hollywood circles were Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, two of the biggest names in the industry. Quote:
Challenge anyone to name the big players in British film and Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are all likely to get a mention.
The actor who played Yosser Hughes in TV's Boys from the Blackstuff and the man who co-wrote Spycatcher probably wouldn't be given a second thought.
But those two are surprise names on a list of the most powerful British film stars and movie-makers in Hollywood today. Winslet, Thompson and Rickman, on the other hand, don't even make the grade.
The list, compiled by the UK Film Council, reveals the country's most successful actors in terms of box office earnings over the course of the past five years. It also lists the most successful directors of the same period.
To qualify for the list, actors must have had significant roles in films with a box office haul of at least £500 million, while directors need to have taken at least a tenth of that with their own projects.
Read the whole article here at The Telegraph.co.uk.
Alan just isn't getting paid his worth, in the US. Pity!

| Recent Alan Interview by The West Australian Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From An enigma wrapped in a dark cape, The West Australian Aug 15, 2007
A recent interview with Alan by The West Australian shows him to be a man very much in the present. He doesn't like to talk about past works, and he really doesn't like being reminded of his past roles or the fame/fangirling they earn him. Quote:
When I suggest to him that his elegant gloominess in films such as Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually has made him a thinking woman’s crumpet, he doesn’t even take it as a compliment. “Well, there you go,” he mutters, as if being lusted after by ladies of a certain age was another of life’s many burdens.
He was keen to talk about Snow Cake, "a critically acclaimed small-scale drama in which he plays a man with a dark past whose journey across Canada is interrupted by a car accident which lands him in the home of a high-functioning autistic (Sigourney Weaver)." Smaller films with messages and power are more interesting to him than the box office blockbusters. Quote:
“The big films allow you to do the smaller ones,” explains Rickman, who for many Potter fans is Severus Snape. “It is different playgrounds and one of them has more expensive equipment. It’s great fun to work on films like Potter. It’s just a different use of your acting brain.”

| Actors, directors protest plans to close legendary British theater Ninja Duck I hope this counts as Alan News.. Otherwise go ahead and delete it... And feel free to chuck a toaster at my head.
From Actors, directors protest plans to close legendary British theater , English.Eastday.com. July 30, 2007 Quote:
More than 120 actors, writers and directors have signed a letter in today's edition of The Times protesting plans to close Britain's oldest working theater, the Bristol Old Vic, for 18 months.
The Old Vic, which opened in 1766, is a pillar of Britain's theatrical community and has nurtured the careers of generations of great actors including Peter O'Toole and Daniel Day-Lewis.
The signatories to the letter are protesting the theater's decision to stop productions for 18 months for refurbishment. They include Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson -- who have five Oscars between them -- as well as Alan Rickman and Ian McKellen.

Alan Rickman is among several artists invited to participate in a presentation at the Cheltenham literary festival on October 14, in honor Eye Rhymes: Sylvia Plath's Art of the Visual (editor Kathleen Connors); a book celebrating the life, art and poetry of Sylvia Plath. Quote:
Connors will discuss the book in person on October 14 at the Cheltenham literary festival, with one of Plath's friends, poet and critic Al Alvarez, and actor Diana Quick, who will read a selection of her poetry. | 'Sweeney Todd' set for Dec. 21 release Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From 'Sweeney Todd' set for Dec. 21 release - Movie News, Reviews, Media and Features on Monsters and Critics - Aug 28, 2007
Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd will come to screens December 21. It's a revenge tale about Benjamin Barker (played here by Johnny Depp) who comes back from prison to avenge his wrongful imprisonment by the local judge, Turpin. (Turpin sent Barker away, abused his wife and raised the baby daughter as his ward, later planning to marry her against her will. Barker returns as "Sweeney Todd", a bloodthirsty barber who practises his planned murder of Turpin on his clients.) It's a very gory, bloody tale and based on the musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, by Stephen Sondheim. Quote:
Alan Rickman will play the lecherous Judge Turpin in the film. He imprisons Benjamin Barker who later returns as barber Sweeney Todd and takes revenge.
Having performed this play before, I am VERY MUCH looking forward to the movie to see two of my favorite actors in it!

| Alan's Rachel Corrie comes to Canada Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From Corrie play will be staged in Toronto - The Toronto Star - Aug 28, 2007
The controversial play will be presented by Theatre PANIK at the Tarragon Extra Space in Toronto, May 29 to June 22. It's being directed by Kate Lushington. Quote:
My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a one-woman show based on the writings 23-year-old Corrie left behind that tell her story from the time she was a small child to March 16, 2003 when she was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer. British actor-director Alan Rickman and Guardian newspaper editor Katharine Viner adapted the activist's writings for the stage.
We wish them well and hope it gets as much success in Canada as it did in London. You can read the article at The Toronto Star.

| Alan is watching, with 7,999 other pairs of eyes. Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From HIV/Aids: Why the world is now watching - Independent.co.uk Online Edition, Oct 8, 2007
Alan lends his eyes, voice and support to ActionAid, watching the next G8 meeting to urge them to keep the promise of "HIV treatment for all by 2010." Quote:
Originally Posted by article They say actions speak louder than words and there's certainly no action quite like 8,000 pairs of eyes staring at you when you make a promise. ActionAid decided to start collecting this number of eyes for its photo petition back in 2003 to show world leaders that the steps they take to deliver on their promise around HIV treatment are being closely watched. The figure of 8,000 – which has just been reached – was in solidarity with the number of people who die of Aids each day.
Just in case any world leader didn't quite "get it", ActionAid encouraged each person that lent their eyes to the photo petition to add a personal message.
"You promised HIV treatment for all by 2010 – and I'm going to be watching you to make sure you keep that promise," says Mel C, one of many celebrities that has given their support. "For every minute you spend looking at these pictures, five people will have died. There is no time to waste," says Alan Rickman's message. Quote:
When the petition was set up (in 2003), a really small percentage of people with HIV could get medication – certainly less than 5 per cent. Now that figure has risen to more like 25 per cent....... There is still a long way to go.

| Alan attends tribute to The Body Shop founder, Anita Roddick. Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
From Tribute to Anita's Body and soul - Evening Standard.co.uk - Oct 24, 2007
Alan Rickman and other celebrities congregated at The National Theatre to celebrate the life and vision of Dame Anita Roddick, Amnesty and Rights activist and founder of the popular cosmetic company, The Body Shop. Quote:
Originally Posted by Article On what would have been her 65th birthday more than 1,500 family and friends, including Alan Rickman, Trevor Eve, Sharon Maughan and Bianca Jagger, paid tribute to the eco-cosmetics pioneer. I Am An Activist is aimed at inspiring and encouraging people who are passionate about the same issues on which Dame Anita tried to make a difference - human rights, trade justice, peace, women's rights, homelessness and climate change. Her husband, Gordon, said his wife, who lived with hepatitis C for 30 years after a blood transfusion, "never lost hope or stamina". Rickman said: "Anita was uncompromising, inspiring and visionary, an active world citizen, but still funny, sexy and overflowing." We all hope that her efforts and those of others around the world work to end injustice, corruption and the destruction of the Earth's treasures.

| Trailer, downloads and updates available for Sweeney Todd Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!
The Official Sweeney Todd website has a trailer online, in case you haven't seen it yet. Also, from there you can subscribe for updates about the film and download desktop wallpaper and a buddy icon.
View the trailer here, but beware of possible mature content. This movie is rated R for graphic, bloody violence (which comes as no surprise to fans of the play or of Tim Burton).
There are screen captures of Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin from the trailer on the ARFC photobucket. Members are encouraged to scour the net for more images and post them to the Alan Rickman Graphics thread; don't forget to credit your sources. |
