Post First Review of Half-Blood Prince (spoiler-free!)

Without a lengthy introduction, here is her spoiler-free review:
Quote:
After getting my book, quite eventful that was, I quickly got home and read it. Here's my review. I probably could've written more, but it's freezing over here and my hands are like, frozen, and it's really hard to not reveal the plot or anything about it.

- Christina (Kurisuchiina)

Before getting Half-Blood Prince, I had not been subjected to any spoilers. All I knew was that somebody was going to die, as it's somewhat common in the Harry Potter books, and that the Half-Blood Prince was not Harry or Voldemort. By the first couple of chapters, my jaw was dropping. It was quite dark, and for me it was shocking. My jaw dropped lots of times during this part, and there were plenty exclamations of "NO WAY!" and "OMG!" coming from my bedroom, which in turn got my mother running in being all like "What happened?!". As I previously said, it was quite dark, the death rate for this one is much higher than with the other books. However these deaths are only lightly mentioned, and it adds to the dark and foreboding mood of the book, but it's well used. Witches and wizards seem terrified that something bad will happen to them, some even disappearing without any reason or mention.

For those wondering, yes, there is a bit more romance in Half-Blood Prince. I saw the word 'snogging' come up often. I'm not going to specify which ships, you can the book and find out. I liked how Half-Blood Prince has some ties with Chamber Of Secrets, specifically speaking, Tom Riddle's diary. It's interesting how JK Rowling figured out how to tie it in, and well, it's exactly what someone would to in extreme lengths to achieve immortality. When I got about half-way, there is lead as to who exactly the Half-Blood Prince. At this stage, I personally felt a little let down as the person who they assume may be the Half-Blood Prince, is someone who isn't even a character. This feeling soon disappeared when I began to reach the ending.

I quite liked Half-Blood Prince, in my opinion is somewhat kind of a prequel as well for a particular character. We discover the history about this certain character, and I personally found it very interesting. I won't reveal who this character is, you're just going to have to read the book!

In Order Of The Phoenix, Harry was incredibly angsty and just generally snappy, it was like he had a male form of PMS constantly. I understand that his 5th year may not have been the best, but at times it made me want to put my book down, not read it, and strangle him. It was a bit over the top personally. Fortunately, Harry seems to have calmed down in Half-Blood Prince, and he isn't so snappy and angsty. It's like JK Rowling decided to give him tranquilizers and sedatives or something.

But that was good, never once during Half-Blood Prince did I want to put the book down. I found that Order Of The Phoenix was a little long-winded, not a book I'd want to read in one sitting if I felt like it and had the time. Half-Blood Prince, although shorter than Order Of The Phoenix, in my opinion, was much better. There are probably some who would disagree with me, but each has their own opinion. Order Of The Phoenix did make me cry, but not as much as Half-Blood Prince did. I've never cried about a book or anything happening in a book prior to Order Of The Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. I'm not going into too much depth as to why I was crying, but as we all know, a character dies. It's who dies and who kills them that is completely shocking!

I'd write more, but I'm afraid if I continue writing I'll end up writing spoilers! Half-Blood Prince was a great book, it's by far my favourite in the series so far. It was definitely worth the wait. Now I can't wait until the 7th book comes out!
Thanks Chris!

Your Tee-shirt is in the mail!!

There are four more excellent (and slightly more detailed) reviews, here.

Note that there aren't any major spoilers, but a few minor plot details are mentioned.

OMG, I opened my door today to find the book on my doorstep. I was freaking out. Not only because I had my book, but because like in my previous post it was only supposed to arrive on Tuesday. I am sooooo excited. I've been jumping up and down ever since lol. Now I'm off to go read my book. Happy reading everyone.

The book was extremely good. It was full to the brim of surprises right and left.
I aquired mine at precisely 12:15am. My family and I drove home in our minivan with our flashlight out and me reading the first chapter with lots of ego and excitement.
Then when my parents and rest of my kin went to sleep, I stayed up, all night reading. I fell asleep around 6 but woke up a half an hour later to resume. Then I finished the book at 11:15am this morning. I probably would have done so earlier except through many times of the book I was daydreaming about the sudden romantic relationships between my favorite charactors. I was staying in the same room as my sister. The nightlight was my only source of light but throughout the night I woke her up with my delighted squeals or groans of "Oh my gosh"!
To those who haven't read the whole thing or who haven't read it yet. The book is AMAZING. It left me breathless at the very last words. All I could say was wow. Another amazing work of art completed by JK Rowling.

haha Totally. I was sobbing my eyes out for the last 100 pages or so... the corner of my pillowcase was dripping wet and I kind of made myself sick-ish from crying so much. It was awful!! I just kept thinking, "Why?!" over and over again.

But some parts of it were very funny!

I got my copy between 12:03 and 12:05 AM... haha

I'm so proud of myself, I read it starting at 12:30 AM until 8:00 AM, straight through (thank goodness for coffee! Miraculously, I don't feel the slightest bit drowsy, although I am rather shaky from the coffee and being rather tired in general... but I'm wide awake! Yesssss.) and once you take out the time I took for snack breaks and such, it took me about 6 hours and 45 minutes... and I loved every minute of it! I can't wait to read it again!

I honestly, HONESTLY, didn't like this book. I read another review that mentioned that it "didn't live up to our expectations" and quite frankly, I agree. It seems as though Ms Rowling feels it is necessary to kill off a character now in every book. I can understand why she killed off the character she did, but it was very sudden, and left me saying: "Huh? What just happened?" Unfortunately, it did sink in, and I am very moody now. (No pun intended.) I appreciate the little bit that she did about Draco though. I also smacked myself several times once I realized who the HBP once--quite obvious, AFTER the fact, and there was hints throughout the entire series! Honestly, though, I hope the last book's (will it be the last?) the best she's done, or many will be happy to never read it, and believe that nothing happens.

My rant is over.

MWAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I vowed not to touch a computer from the second I got the book, till after I finished it. And I didn't.

But sadly, I must say I didn't exactly enjoy this book, it definatly was more of a depressing book, and understandably so. Parts were good, yes. The writing was brilliant and there were parts I really did love, but I think the bad parts out weigh the good, making me not like the book so much.

It won't be my *favorite* book, but it certainly was the most informative.

I absolutely loved this book, and I have to disagree with a couple of the above posts, this was definetly my favorite book thus far. The writing seems soo much more "adult", for lack of a better term. And as always the technical writing was briliantly done by J K.

I agree. I think that Harry has changed so drastically from the last book, and that really annoyed me. In two weeks, it seems he has totally changed the way he was...and I was a bit disappointed with the way it, all the secrets, were unveiled...I was expecting much better, and I think that my suspisions before the book were right--this books seems rushed. It just jumps so fast, I think anyway...The thing I did enjoy about the book was the fact that I didn't expect that character to die, and didn't believe people before who the HBP would be...I just hope that the next book is a lot better, and that she doesn't feel she has to rush just to please us...I would gladly wait a couple of years for her to give the book the justice it deserves, but I think that this one didn't do that...

Default A Miracle!!

When my husband came home from work last night, he remembered I had used some of my spending money to buy things for him, and if I hadn't done that, I'd have enough for the book. And since we're both going to read it, he suggested we pool our money.

Be back later. Gotta go see if Wal-Mart has a copy.

GOT IT!!! *does the happy dance*

I'm about to start Chapter 6 after a brief pause for lunch. My favorite quote so far: "Kreacher, shut up!" (Not the quote itself, but the circumstances and what happens after it's said.)
