Default Review: Psychosis on DVD

Directed and written by Reg Traviss, Psychosis is the definition of a horror film. No later than ten minutes in, we witness a serial killer shockingly attacking a group of youths. Near to the attack site, Sarah (Charisma Carpenter), a crime novelist has just relocated to the English countryside, along with her husband David (Paul Schulfor). From noises at night to sightings of non-existing people, Sarah becomes more and more insecure with the belief that someone is hiding in the woods. As the only one to witness such occurrences, the locals are confident that it’s just her imagination, but is it just a case of an overactive imagination, or is there a more sinister plot being carried out?

The locations used in the film are magnificent and realistic to the English countryside, from the vast fields of green all the way through to the grey looking clouds. The film lacks excess noise and so allows you to hear the sound of the wind and leaves, which often increases the suspense. The few moments where music can be heard in the background are subtle, and do not distract your attention from what is happening on screen.

The movie runs for just under 90 minutes and has a few moments where nothing seems to be going on. However, this merely calms the viewer down before delivering a terrifying scene, of which there are many.

The special features provide over 45 minutes of bonus footage, including a behind-the-scenes look at how certain scenes were created, and deleted scenes. Some of these additional scenes would have flowed perfectly well in the final cut, as they deliver more action and horror to the viewer.

Psychosis has been rated an 18, and it’s easy to see why. There’s nudity and horror from the outset, as well as frequent bloody violence. Released on DVD in July, it can be purchased from Amazon here.
