7. Confundus
*dedicated to Angie*

Rowena studiously ignored the bickering of her three friends, interested only in the duel taking place before her. Students. Always finding something to fight about. At least the students involved weren’t hers this time. As always when one of Salazar’s and one of Godric’s students had to resort to a duel to solve a problem, Rowena was asked to be the neutral judge.

There. She knew that wand movement. Blowing her whistle, Rowena pointed her wand at Salazar’s star student. The student ignored her whistle and proceeded to attempt the Confundus charm. Rowena did not wait to see if the charm would work on the other boy. Instead, she cast a shield charm over Godric’s student.

“Foul!” she shouted, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Spells that harm an opponent’s mind aren’t legal in duels to solve disputes. They result in forfeiture and detention.” Rowena scowled at the boy. Surely one who thought he could Confund someone accurately shouldn’t cower, should he?

“Detention with me, boy. Next Saturday.” Never mind that there was a Quidditch match that day. Slytherin’s hand-picked team wasn’t playing, so no harm would be done.

20. Knitting Charm

Rowena kicked the ball of yarn at her foot, grinning as her cat chased the yarn across the room. As Helga returned with truffles, Rowena immediately bent her head over the yarn and knitting needles in her lap.

“Rowena, isn’t it a lovely day to be knitting?” Helga said dreamily as she set the truffles down and took a seat. Rowena rolled her eyes.

“It would be far lovelier if I could read a good book, instead of making scarves,” she grumbled at her friend. It was all very well that Helga wanted to help the homeless Muggles, but Rowena preferred expediency to the feeling of accomplishment. “This is crazy.”

With an apologetic smile directed at her friend, Rowena pulled out her wand and cast a knitting charm. She grabbed a novel from the table and opened it, glancing at the progress of the knitting charm at every page turn.

11. Expecto Patronum
*dedicated to Anna*

Rowena fumed as the dementor approached the Muggle bystanders. How dare that creature try to take advantage? She whipped her wand out, completely ignoring the baffled Muggles who lined the gloomy alley. She would obliviate them later, after she had gotten rid of the dementor.

Seriously. Who let dementors get so far into London?

As if it had sensed a worthy opponent, the dementor turned from the Muggles and faced Rowena, who shuddered slightly. She hated dementors with a passion. They sucked the life and love from everything.

Summoning her favorite memory of the day she, Godric, Helga, and Salazar had banded together to start a school, Rowena raised her wand. “Expecto Patronum!” she shouted fiercely. As her eagle Patronus soared from her wand and circled the dementor, Rowena reached into her pocket for some muggle money. They might not know it, but these Muggles needed chocolate. And memory charms.

16. Impedimenta
*dedicated to Tina*

Rowena paced back and forth in front of towering stacks of books – precious books on every subject known to wizard kind. Someone had taken a book on venomous tentactulas from the leaning stack of Herbology books, and Rowena planned to catch the culprit – who would return either to take another book or to replace the first.

She had rounded the corner and peered around a stack of astronomy books when Rowena heard a slight snuffling sound coming from between two stacks of books. Immediately her wand was in her hand.

“Who’s there?”

Rowena stepped between stacks of books. As the snuffling sound drew nearer, she noticed more toppled books. A clumsy book-snatcher, she guessed. At last merely two stacks of books separated Rowena from the snuffling culprit.

A step to the left, and Rowena had the culprit within wand range. “Impedimenta!” she shouted, pointing her wand at the snuffling sound. A high-pitched squeal resounded, and Rowena’s eyes alighted on the book-snatching culprit. She stared in astonishment.

Instead of a bookworm or conniving mastermind, the only culprit in sight was a rather fat pig, wriggling in slow motion as it nibbled on the pages of a spell book.
