| Discussion #8: Remus as a Prefect Neville's Bravery Remus as a Prefect
How did Remus balance being a prefect with being a Marauder. We know that the Marauders were rulebreakers, so how did Remus cope with being on both sides of the coin? Did he break any rules to get his friends out of trouble along the way, or did he let them face their punishments to upkeep his role as prefect?

As a Prefect, I would imagine that he was quite conflicted when it came to his friends. Since he joined them (the Marauders) on some of their prank and mischief making, he had to have broken a few rules, minor and not so minor...
Having said that, adolescent Remus tried to fit in and probably closed his eyes to many things the other Marauders did to keep his place within the clan. I'm sure he had limits that they knew not to cross, (using an Unforgivable for instance) because Remus was a decent boy and wouldn't 'torture' or taunt other students like James and Sirius would do when the whim hit them. As for punishment, if they were caught red-handed by others (teachers etc) I doubt he would have tried to cover too much if it meant being disapproved by his teachers. But he probably tried to help, in some fashion.

I think that he did try to be a good prefect, but when it came to James and Sirius he just looked the other way. As we saw in Snape's worst memory, he pretended not to notice what James and Sev was up to. But, I guess that he would never let them get too far, and they were not the kind to practice dark magic, either.
I agree with Yolande that when the teachers were involved, he just let them face their punishments.
But it must have been really difficult for him, though, to be a prefect and watch your friends break the rules or watch them get detentions. But, I guess even as a prefect he still broke some rules (he still let them sneak out with him on the full moon for one).

I agree. Remus must have been very conflicted about things, since he was part of the Marauders and they were constantly in trouble. But I'm certain that he let the punishment be tolled out as it was necessary, because that was part of his duties as a prefect. I'm sure his friends understood.

Yeah, I'm sure the others accepted their punishments for their deeds.

I personally think that Remus did a splendid job at being a prefect at certain areas. Although, I think that there was one particular area that he wasn't so great at accomplishing -- keeping James, Sirius, and Peter from breaking the rules. Granted Remus was indeed a Marauder back in the day, I always saw him as someone who was a part of the gang, but didn't really take part in pulling off any of the pranks that the other three proudly did. Remus was the brains of the group, which there seems to be always someone in a group like that. I'm sure he was to look our for them so they would get caught and, most importantly, not letting his friends go overboard with their pranking or letting them end up doing something extrememly stupid that they'd end up regretting it later in life.
In the little glimpses of his early days in the books, we see that Remus kind of let the other three Marauders do whatever they wanted under his supervision in a way. If they ended up getting caught by a professor, I'm sure that Remus would let them take their punishments as he most likely warned them about the consequences for their actions.
Overall, I think it would be pretty hard being a prefect with the rule-breaking friends that Remus had. I'm sure that he let them by with breaking several school rules and all that if no one got hurt and if they didn't get caught, but it definately had to be a tough job for him. With being a prefect and all, I can just see him being something like an overseer on what the Marauders had up their sleeves and was always the one letting them know of the consequences and that, one way or another, their actions would one day come back to kick them in the butt ... or smack dab in detention right in the middle of a slimey dungeon.
