Default Care of Magical Creatures Lesson ❧ 2

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES LESSON

Ever since the disastrous lesson in the Rose Garden, Mathys' curriculum had been limited to almost exclusively theoretical lessons for the students of Hogwarts. Unless the care involved the cleanliness of the environment creatures dwell in on the Beaxbatons grounds, the only creatures students had seen were those in print within the pages of their textbooks and in a proper classroom setting indoors. Though the Care of Magical Creature professor had made some attempt to liven the experience up by animating the creatures off their pages to life size when appropriate to do so. Though these docile magical manifestations could hardly appease a true creature enthusiast and, to him, it felt as though he were administering detention each lesson.

This afternoon was to be different and students had been instructed as such at the conclusion of lessons last week.

The first outdoors lesson since the week long scrub down of La Volière, the comfortable wicker couches that seated five were arranged in two rows in semi-circle formation facing his chalet. Mathys himself stood just in front of them flanked on either side by some very familiar friends. And these friends were looking a bit green, literally, around the edges from moss and other lichen.

"Please refrain from speakeeng een raised voices as your find your seats," he cautions as the Hogwarts students make their approach.

question one | what do you know about illnesses that infect creatures?
creature preparation | get dressed in your gear
main activity I | luring your gargoyle

OOC: Salutations and welcome to our second and final Care of Magical Creatures lesson together this term. As is alluded to in the thread description, lessons since the Rose Garden incident have been almost exclusively theoretical (think Umbridge's DADA lessons but without all the pink and hostility) unless its been janitorial related. If you would like to discuss any specifics between your character and Professor de Nostredame, please do not hesitate to send a PM to this account and we can sort some things out.

Before posting, make sure you are familiar with the rules and regulations for the subject.

Class will officially begin in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine diligently made a list of answers that de Nostredame seemed to be okay with. It was unsurprising that he accepted hers since it was one that was known, especially if anyone grew up in the Wizarding world. Her steely gaze followed his to the gargoyle at the man’s feet. That one must have suffered from Squabbs Syndrome but she was intrigued to learn that the Syndrome affected not just dragons.

Try as she might, the Snakette could not keep her eyes off the gargoyles. Her feelings towards them from the first lesson had not changed but they were fascinating to watch and listen to. Then…

Panic surged through her. They were what? Give those things a bath? And what if they attacked? Had de Nostredae thought of that? Were these protective gear going to be sufficient? What if a few of them recognised her as one of the students that the HeadCrazyMistress hated for destroying the roses and attacked her while de Nostredame wasn’t looking?

So many questions.

Still panicking a little, Claudine remained glued in place on that couch.

They were supposed to do what????

Shocked to say the least Cole just stared straight at the gargoyles by the professor's feet for several minutes trying to grasp the unthinkable, totally ignoring the fact that professor De Nostradame had praised him for his answer. Giving gargoyles a bath? Was the professor mad? What if they we're attacked like last time? Cole highly doubted that any fencing gear was going to protect them then. Breathing slowly and trying not to panic Cole's eyes glanced around at his couch mates; first at Elisa and then at Holly, Lucas and Avalon. Did they fear this too? We're they as worried as he felt?

Swallowing Cole got up and geared up in the protective gear as instructed before he retook his seat next to Elisa, Avalon, Lucas and Holly and whispered quietly to them. "Do you guys think this will really be safe to do?"

The first question of the lesson had Avalon a bit stumped. The only illness she could really think of was scale rot, but Gryffindor boy on her bench had already said that. Were they supposed to have learned this by now? She racked her brain, trying to remember if they ever discussed creature diseases last term. Maybe she should have done some extra reading. She decided to stay quiet and listen to the others' responses instead.

When Nostredame started talking about creature cleanliness, it was all she could do not to groan. Those gargoyles looked positively grimy, and she was not looking forward to spending the lesson scrubbing them clean - or whatever the methodology was. Nevertheless, she slowly moved toward the rack of fencing gear, not wanting to startle any of the gargoyles. Once she returned to the bench, she shrugged off her robe, tucked it neatly under the bench with her belongings, and pulled on the suit. "I don't know, but I just hope that we all leave here with out extremities still in tact," Avalon whispered to Cole sarcastically, her mind flashing back to the way that the gargoyle had nearly split Bernadette's wand in two the last time they were in the Rose Garden.

All of the illnesses sounded very bad indeed and Cecelia couldn't help but wonder how her dogs were doing at home. She knew her family was more than capable of looking after them, but talking about all this made her wish she could be there to give them each a cuddle and see for herself. Luckily before she knew it, it was time to focus ALL her attention on the gargoyles, and that was as good a distraction as any. She bet Phoebe was looking forward to working with them, too, and she offered her a grin as they were clued in on what they'd be doing. "Wonder which gargoyle we'll work with," She said quietly, eyes on the many lounging around the professor. "Hope we get one that likes us." 'Cause Cecelia liked being liked, she did.

Getting up slowly when it was time, the first year shrugged off her black robes and set them on the bench. Then it was off to get her gear. She didn't dare run, even IF she was eager to grab the equipment, 'cause she didn't want to make the gargoyles upset. They'd already gotten a bad rep with these creatures and THAT needed to be remedied today.

The fencing outfit looked kinda silly on the small first year, but she walked with her head held high as she returned to the bench. She felt kind of official wearing it, like she was ready to work!

That was a bold answer, but Mathys had come to expect such intrepid gestures from the younger students of Hogwarts. Had she left her answer there, the man was obligated to throw his own flavour of pettiness into his response. Though, unfortunately, she continued and that tight fist pressed to the small of his back relaxed. "Ze orf virus, more commonly known as sore mouth, ees an ailment most commonly found een sheep and goats." His crystal blue eyes glanced around towards the gargoyles assembled, his gaze falling on a few in particular. "Sores are typically found around ze leeps, muzzle, and een ze mouth. Furthair gruesome details can be found een your textbooks."

Complete with pictures.

Most of the gargoyles had taken it upon themselves to lay down in the grass as the lesson progressed while various noises of discontent filled the air between silences from human speech. A purr over here, the rattle of a tail over there, a quiet bleat, the occasional crunch of grass as one or two decided they needed a bit of a snack. All this was music to the man's ears and a good indication of his gargoyles' temperament for the remainder of the lesson.

"Gargoyles, as you have hopefully observed, are a unique species of creature. Like ze chimera and ze mateecore, gargoyles' bodies ahre a hybreed of two or more species and ziss ees not always conseestent from one gargoyle to anothair. As you can see among zose who have volunteered to attend our lesson, we have some zat have reptilian parts while others lack zese entirely and have strong caprine qualeeties. Ziss can make zeir care extremely deeffeecult as zey are susceptible to numerous ailments. To counteract ziss, gargoyles' stone sleep, wheech ees usually triggered by zeir biological clocks, became a vital evolutionary advantage. I am sure you can sink of numerous advantages for phase shifting, zough not without eets risks as well." He paused a moment to carefully maneuver himself around the gargoyles that had strung themselves out on the grass. "In ze wild, cleanliness ees a survival skill. Even ze cahckroach must keep eets feelers clean to find food. One disadvantage zat gargoyles face with zeir phase shifting ees zat zey struggle to shed old coats, or scales, or skin. Some of you may have seen what Non–magiques considair to be a gargoyle, where zey awake by bursting out of a stone casing...but ziss ees something of pure imagination and not how sings actually work. Gargoyles not only will phase shift eento zeir stone sleep for rest, but also to protect against ze weathair and zey are not invincible against erosion or lichen growth...which ees what you see on our gargoyles here. Among...other zings. Today, you will all be learning how to give a gargoyle a bath and tend to eets specific needs for cleanliness. But before we begin, we need to start on some protective measures. no spell work ziss time."

They all saw how well that had turned out the last go around and Mathys did not fancy a repeat offense.

"Over zair on ze racks tucked behind zat tree you will find an assortment of modified fencing gear zat you can slip on over your Hogwarts uniforms. I suggest you remove your bulky billowy black robes. Zese have been mmodified by myself to act een ze same mannair een wheech Loricatus was meant to ze last time ziss task was attempted. Now...off you go. Be sure to make no sudden movements and remembair to keep your voices to a pleasant calm. Once you have changed, reassemble weeth your couchmates and we will begin caring for our gargoyles."

And if there were any questions, now would be the time to ask them.
Oh, interesting. This was in their books, was it? Huh. Bernadette had been hoping to see the mouth of a gargoyle like the one that had chomped down on her wand up close and personal. As far as her wand and the gargoyle were concerned, they had some business that was NOT FINISHED yet.

But, as it were, she did not intend to lose any more house points today, and so she'd hold her tongue............. for ze moment. She'd wait until the perfect opportunity to see her gargoyle's mouth for herself.

"They'll all like us, because we are very likeable young ladies," Phoebe informed Cece with all sincerity. She wasn't at all worried about whether or not the gargoyles would like them. If you gave any creature love and affection and food, you were always its favorite person in the world. Until someone else came along with a better snack.

Phoebe shed her own outer robes and pulled on the provided gear. It was a little cumbersome and made it hard to properly cuddle with the gargoyles, assuming they were ever going to be allowed to do so, but it probably made the professor feel good. ESPECIALLY after the last class where the gargoyles were invited.

There was a feathered quill poking at her and Claudine turned to look at Bernie. “What if those gargoyles recognise me as the one who set the roses on fire, Bernie?” she whispered, voicing her fear and trusting her friend to not laugh at her. Her eyes darted back to the gargoyles but she nodded, somewhat reluctantly. Only Bernie could convince her to suit up. Besides, she would have her wand with her if the gargoyles got too cranky.

Up the Snakette got, leaving her belongings on the couch. “You think these things are really going to protect us?’’ she asked, skepticism in her voice. She eyed the fencing gear with suspicion but at the same time picking up a pair of gloves.

"What if they recognise me as the one who set his mouth on fire?" Bernie whispered back to Claudine, nodding in the direction of Ozzy or whatever its name was. What were they gonna do, shape-shift on them again? She was convinced that gargoyles were mostly harmless big dogs, and wasn't going to sit out their first ACTIVE lesson since the Gargoyle Incident of '99. "We can't let the fear of striking out keep us from playing the game!" It was a good quote she'd heard somewhere and was totally using right now. Plus, y'know. Gryffindors didn't have the fear gene.

She left her things behind and started putting on the fencing gear alongside her friend. "Dunno," Bernie replied, still being QUIET, and shrugging some. "I really want to just... use magic, y'know?" But to be fair, she did understand why they weren't trying that complicated spell again. Guess all this weird padding would have to do.

Default many apologies for zis unfortunate delay
the sky is always there for me ☀ ☁ heavy hearts like heavy clouds

To say that he was disappointed in the sluggish movements of the Hogwarts students was an understatement. He could lead a hippogriff to water, but he could not force the hippogriff to drink. Well, not without the assistance of Dark magic and that practice was frowned upon. Though when movement finally began, Mathys set to pulling some supplies from the mokeskin sack tied around one of his belt loops. The first items to come out were harnesses, not unlike those students may have seen fashioned for dragons, for each of the gargoyles which he then arranged in a large circular manner in the space. Levitating these slightly off the grass, the professor next pulled sturdy looking bathing troughs and small buckets containing wire brushes which were then enchanted one to settle beside each harness. Standing in the middle of it all, he gave the scene a nod of approval before pulling one last item from the bag: a very large slap of honeycomb on an ornate dish.

...the later certainly perked the gargoyles attention as they all rose to their feet and gathered around him like dogs waiting for treats. Some even had their tails wagging.

"Encore un peu de patience, mes amis," he cooed with a smile as he made sure the honeycomb remained out of reach from there tongues. This was particularly tricky for those who had more reptilian features in their faces. "Once you are dressed, please return ovair here and we will continue." He pointedly bopped the nose of Ogott as the gargoyle pressed its great paws to the man's waist to balance itself on its hindquarters in attempt to reach the honeycomb. "Zat's bettair. Now, as you can see zese gargoyles have quite ze liking for honeycomb. We will be using ziss to our advantage today. I trust you all can see ze harnesses spread out about ze area, oui? Een your groups you will select a harness and smear a beet of honeycomb along ze bit. Ziss will help keep your gargoyle preoccupied and content while you lead eet back to ze bathing troughs where anothair een your team should be filleeng eet with watair by useeng Aguamenti ahnd heat ze watair to a gentle boil useeng Chaudensis." He paused a moment to do a quick head count. Ideally, he would like two or three students to be on luring the gargoyle into the harness and then back to the trough. "You will need to get your gargoyle to soak een zeir boileeng bath for five minutes befare you can begin scrubbing zem...but we will get to zat when we get zere."

If they got there. It could be very difficult getting gargoyles into their harnesses even with the aid of honeycomb and sometimes even more difficult to get them into the trough. Some did have terribly stubby legs.

"If zeir are no clarification questions, you may begin," he tore a bit of honeycomb off from the block and held it in his palm. Smiling rather paternally as he did, Mathys lowered his palm to be level with the gargoyles who wasted no time in lapping and licking at the block. "Quickly now, came tear off a piece of honeycomb while I have zem all properly distracted."

Distracted they were.

A true menagerie of rumps from lion to goat to lizard wiggled gleefully as their tongues feasted on the honeycomb their master had offered. A chorus of pleased sounds filled the air, some purring while others mewed and baah'd. It was almost too loud to even hear oneself think, but at least the gargoyles were all happily distracted.

For now.

They really WERE likeable young ladies, it was true, and Cecelia looked just as pleased by the answer as she felt on the inside.

Did the professor KNOW that she was getting more and more excited with each thing being set up? It meant they were REALLY doing this, working with creatures, and it had REALLY been too long.

She listened carefully about honeycomb and how it was important to gargoyles which meant it was important to THEM. They wanted cooperative bathers, after all. Then it was time to begin because they were being all CUTE and SNACKING and it was their chance to get moving. "You want to get one harnessed OR fill the trough with water?" Cece didn't mind either way, she just wanted to begin. This was going to be fun!

Bernie raised a good point: they both had a fifty-fifty chance that they both get caught and punished by the gargoyles. Claudine didn’t need any further persuasion because: 1. She was usually always up for a challenge and 2. Only this Gryffindor could convince her.

Claudine eyed the gear suspiciously but still began to pull them on one at a time. “Yes, I know.’’ She remembered quite clearly the look on her friend’s face from the moment Trent has suspended her. And though it was difficult for her, the Snakette reached out and patted Bernie’s shoulder quickly before tugging on her gloves. “Don’t worry. We’ll make it through this lesson without any trouble.” There was no way she was going to let Bernie run into any issues today.

Claudine led the way over to de Nostredame but hovering back a bit; she was still slightly reluctant to get too close to the gargoyles. But that hope was quickly dashed as she knew it would be. Not to mention they would have to do magic. “I’ll do the magic,’’ she whispered quickly to Bernie. “You grab a piece of the honeycomb.’’ Team work, yeah?

Well, Lucas didn't really mind the task that Nostredame had described to them. Was it dirty? Yeah. Was it going to be grimy and disgusting? Yeah, most likely. But he also knew that this was just..... Care of Magical Creatures. This is what the subject was about, right?

But it wasn't until Cole had asked a question about safety that made the boy pause on his way to taking off his robe. Was it safe? Uh...... Green eyes found the gargoyles by Nostredame and he stared. Anxiously. He knew why Cole was asking: last time, in one of these lessons, the gargoyles had attacked them for supposedly attacking the Headmistress. Hadn't they gone after a wand too?

But he also vaguely remembered one that tried to get pats out of him, like a dog would. Maybe it was because of this that it was hard to think of them as only a dangerous creature because he, himself, was torn on what to think. It was also why he gave the boy a simple shrug of his shoulders before moving to take off his robes and put on the, uh, fencing gear?

...........

Yeah, this didn't help.

What did help was the small bop on the nose of one of the gargoyles, something that made him instantly smile.

Right, yeah, focus.

So they...... had to work as a team to clean the gargoyles? Someone had to smear the honeycomb and distract the gargoyle, someone else had to harness it and lure it back to the trough, someone else had to work on the boiling water, and....... scrubbing would come later, right? Well. Lucas already knew what he wanted to do. The water part sounded the easiest and least likely to give him anxiety or to scare him but..... he wasn't the only person on this team.

Turning to the others, he asked, "Sooo, who wants to do what?"

the sky is always there for me ☀ ☁ heavy hearts like heavy clouds

OOC: Terrible sorry, mon chéries. But RL got the best of me there for a bit and the time for the lesson has run out so I must close it. Thank you for coming and participating. I am sorry that I could not facilitate you all the way through to the ending as intended.

Please headcanon that gargoyles were cleaned and bathed with some gentle mishaps along the way.
