In this chic dark wood cottage attached to the castle is where Professor Mathys de Nostredame resides. Though the most many will ever see of it is through the windows when his heavy silk purple drapes were not drawn closed. A private person, he prefers to have his conversations with students on the porch curling around the cottage or while on a walk about the grounds.
So come and knock, state your business, but be prepared to take conversation elsewhere.

Claudine knew in her heart that she was in trouble. The Slytherin thing to do would be to leave the battered kite that she had been out flying where she originally got it from but this was an opportunity. An opportunity to meet yet again with the professor of whom her first impression of had been: He's intimidating.
Claudine held the kite to her chest as she shuffled carefully over to the man's cottage. She really had had a great time flying the thing. It was one that colour changed and had simply been spectacular to watch.
The little Snakette balanced the kite with her left hand while the free one reached out to knock on the door she had just come up to.

The word had reached Abra's small ears that there were horses at the Palace of Beauxbatons, but of course there was no way she was going to just head over there and start stroking their mane without asking if she was even allowed. Figuring out where to find the Care of Magical Creatures Professor was a challenge, but once she found out where, that's where she headed.
People weren't exactly welcome company to the young girl. She didn't want people to ask her personal questions, and she didn't want to have to tell people anything about her life. Animals were the best company she had ever met, and she missed her farm at home very much. Her owl was in the Owlery, and there were no cats brushing up against her leg like she had previously imagined there would be.
She knocked her fist three times on the wooden door before patiently waiting, her eyes cast down to her feet.

Was he even in?
Troubled by the events of the feast, Mathys had spent the greater portion of his free time inspecting the Beauxbatons' perimeter and trying to sort just what had had the gargoyles so spooked that evening. He also had to continuing tend to his neck, around which a fine purple win colored silk scarf was situated around his neck in a classic loop.
Hearing the knock at his door, the man immediately assumed it was the watercolor circle coming to ask about using his volière for inspiration. So he was greeted with much disappointed to see a Hogwarts pupil on the other side upon pulling his door open. A sentiment that only deepened when he saw what was clutched in her arms.
"........and why have you seen fit to remove zat kite out of the pré de cerf-volant?" he inquired somberly, stepping entirely out of his chalet and shutting the door firmly behind him.
They could discuss this out here - and he imagined that it would not be a particularly long conversation.

Three knocks. Perfectly polite and worthy of his attention.
Setting his literature down on the coffee table in front of his luxurious couch, Mathys strolled over to the door and swung the door open where he found the Hogwarts jeunette with her eyes cast down at her feet.
How disappointing. A perfectly respectful knocking sequence followed by downcast eyes.

"How may I help you, mademoiselle?"
At the door opening, Abra looked up. And up, into the beautiful eyes of this Professor of Magical Creatures. Feeling a bit shy, she swallowed and said "H-hello Professor. I was just wondering if you might let me visit your horse stables." She didn't want to cry, but she felt the urge bubble up.
Oh no, she didn't want to.
She looked down again, swallowing against her dry throat, before looking back up. "I used to live on a farm and I really miss our horses." Used to, before her parents went missing and she and her Auntie Lou moved to London. The cramped apartments and city living were truly suffocating. She knew how to care for the mundane horses independently, and being a first year, having grown up in a predominantly muggle town, wrongfully assumed these would be the same horses in the Horse Stables at Beauxbatons.

A polite knock and following the rules of the grounds. Mathys was quickly deciding that the poor taste Hogwarts had left in his mouth at the start-of-term feast was, as previously conceived, forgivable. Though the waterworks that appeared soon after were a bit of a questionable embellishment.
"But of course," he smiled kindly, now properly exiting his chalet and standing before her. "Perhahps you can ahsseest me with zeir feeding, oui?" He could test her out on the more docile of his winged horses before entrusting her with single malt whiskey.
Locking the door to his chalet behind him, and checking his reflection in the window, he loomed like a gentle giant over the first year. "Shall we zen?" he asked, folding one arm behind his back while gesturing in the direction of the stables with his other.

Claudine thought that the CoMC professor looked disappointed that he found her standing before him and not someone else. She couldn’t be bothered one bit. She fixed her strong gaze on his neck instead. Whatever happened to it, she had a feeling it was a nasty injury but was certain that it would be taken care of. The man seemed more than capable of doing that… and well, anything else that was tossed his way. From him, her gaze swung to the door as it swung shut behind him. Claudine wasn’t always interested in other persons much less their abode yet she found herself curious about this professor’s. Yes, she would have liked to explore if she could.
But there was a certain matter to be taken care of. Feeling incredibly small due to her shortness, the Snakette threw back her head slightly so that she would be able to look him in the eye. “I was flying it,’’ she began in explanation. “When I was trying to get it down to return, the kite crashed to the ground before I could reach it.’’ Claudine indicated to the top of the kite which was very dented. “I thought that I would get your help in having it fixed.’’
And also because she was fascinated by him, hence this kite was an excuse for the visit.

She was quickly about to learn that the utilization of his kites as an excuse to visit was an atrocious lapse in logic.
Inhaling sharply through the nose, his chest rising as copious amounts of air filled his lungs, Mathys took a few lengthy steps with his long strides and sat down on one of the two steps leading up to the porch surrounding his chalet. He expected her to join him.
"....and how bad is ze dahmage?" he inquired while holding his hand out for her to pass the kite to him.

Uh oh.
Claudine had not expected that she would have been rewarded with such an angry reaction. It really had been an accident and she was honest when she said she had tried to save it. She stood where she was, watching him stride away. She half expected those strides to crunch straight through the floor. After a moment’s hesitation, Claudine followed. Naturally, her steps for far less huge. She came to a rest at his side, opting not to sit before de Nostredame got angrier.
Was he always this angry? Or was just his precious kite’s situation had upset him?
“A dented top,’’ the Snakette replied. She held it out to show him, or for him to take, whichever he wanted. But still, that strong, intense gaze of his studied his face and body language. The head of the kite was practically folded down towards the middle. It seemed as if the kite had no top.
A new thought occurred to Claudine: would she be punished for this?

Yes. Oh yes, she would be punished.
His expression folded into a stoic one as his piercing blue eyes focused on examining the damage. Salvageable? But of course. Over the years Mathys had handled more severe destruction and often volunteered his time to the on-site repair team at the Kite Festival Cayeux-sur-Mer, but it always felt different when it was one of his creations that he was trusting out to his pupils.
"While I repair ziss I will contemplate a fitteeng detention for you," he said calmly despite his insides boiling. She could consider it compensation for the time he would have to put into the repairs. Time that could have been better suited elsewhere. "I will notify you of a time and place soon."

Claudine had been right.
The kite would be as good as new. She was inwardly happy about this because it really had been a pretty object; a good one to sketch as part of her collection of her adventures as a first year. Outwardly, her face remained frozen in an unsmiling expression…
Which quickly changed to confusion.
“But I was honest enough to bring it here to get it fixed,’’ she began, her outrage very well hidden. It was something she had to master given the fact that she lived with so many family members and the younger ones were constantly annoying her. “I’m just a first year and I haven’t yet mastered the charm that fixes things. So I… I needed an adult’s help.’’ Even though this hadn’t been her only intent of coming here to get things mended. At least now she was sure of one thing: she was no longer fascinated by this man. He was just a huge, muscled, pompous human being. “Doesn’t that count for something?’’ Claudine asked, her hands gesturing helplessly before her; her dark eyes wide and pleading. “It wasn’t something I could have controlled.’’
Would it be too much if she added some crocodile tears?

"It does," he nodded calmly as he carefully set the damanged kite aside on one of the tables on his deck. "Zis is why I did not take away any of zose points from you and one detention can easily be done during one of your free periods." He paused for a moment, a few thoughts gracing his mind, before continuing. "I administair detentions to Beauxbaton students for zis as well, do not zink I am treating you unfairly because you are from Hogwarts."
He carefully folded his arms behind his back and looked down at the first year.
"Perhaps our time togethair will help remind you to begin with an apology ze next time somezing like zis happens." Because she had, in fact, not apologized for the damage and the opportunity to do so had passed.

Claudine listened and she listened attentively. She was still fully angry about this whole situation. Talk about it backfiring in her face. But did she even care that he gave Beauxbatons students punishments for damaging his kites? No. There was one thing she did care about: Slytherin winning the House Cup. So, she was silently thankful that she had not lost any points. And thought the urge to fight her case was strong, she shrewdly calculated that de Nostredame would waste no time in taking a hefty chunk of points.
UGH.
This was so frustrating.
“I’ll keep that in mind,’’ Claudine said stiffly. Now that it was a seal deal that she was going to be suffering through a detention, the Snakette determined that she was not going to offer an apology now anyway. She tilted her head further back to meet de Nostredame’s eyes. “I hope you don’t have much trouble fixing the kite. It’s a very pretty one.’’ They were done here now? Claudine wanted nothing more than to flee.
“Good bye, Professor.’’ Without any hesitation, the first year made her way away from the cottage.

Bernadette was ACTUALLY heading out to the Care of Magical Creatures region of the grounds because she was ACTUALLY feeling better now that she was back from her suspension AND had her wand back. The Hogwarts Headprofessormaster had fixed it (no thanks to those FRENCH PEOPLE) AND it mostly worked right. She was just more determined than EVER to earn back those house points AND figure out what the heck was up with Dr. Notre Dame or whatever his name was. Armed with her wand, her journal, and a Muggle ballpoint pen in one hand, Bernie knocked LOUDLY on Notre Dame's door with the other.
That's right, she was not afraid of 'Ogwarts happening out here again.

Thankfully, for this young Gryffindor, Mathys was not presently inside his chalet and thus his peace had been spared from her insufferably loud banging on his luxuriously polished door. Rather he had been taking a stroll around the grounds, checking in on a few of the gargoyles, and was returning to his chalet with the intention of taking his watercolor set out to the cliff side view for a bit of meditative painting.
"Mademoiselle Grantham," he greeted from behind as he approached the steps leading up to his expansive porch. "I see your wand haz been repaired."

Bernadette nearly JUMPED when the cat-like professor appeared from BEHIND HER. A SNEAK ATTACK?! She should write that down. It was definitely subject to further inspection and reflection at a later time.
She sniffed a bit not so subtly in his direction and gently extracted her wand from her own grip. "Yes." Bernie showed it to him in the palm of her hand, holding the wand like it was a treat. See? A non-threatening gesture? DID HE SEE HOW INNOCENT SHE WAS? She wouldn't even harm a glumbumble.
"I came here to see if I could get my house points back, Monsieur?" The ones she had lost in class due to her ignorance? Yeah, those.

He would prefer wolf if one were selecting a creature he resembled. But no matter.
She was likely to catch the strong scent of abraxan droppings as there were a few clinging to the bottoms of his boots mixed with the frankincense of his cologne of choice. Though his brow arched at the manner in which she was presenting her wand, he was nonetheless pleased to see that the young witch did indeed have her wand back. A wizarding education would be pointless without one.

Hmm, yep, there it was. Notre Dame's weird smell. Something like... musty, yet...spicy? Weirdly, she was suddenly being reminded of going Church during important holidays, like Christmas for sure. And then something outdoorsy came to mind, and something that smelled just like dung, and---
"Ah, the stables," Bernie repeated to herself as she stowed her wand away into her bag before they moved anywhere else. Might as well put away her journal... maybe... if Notre Dame could be trusted... he WAS smiling, though his smile was rather WOLF-LIKE....
Fine, fine. She really needed to get these points back. "Oui, I could help in the stables," the first-year agreed at last. "I'll follow you?" Truth be told, she'd been avoiding this place ever since her disastrous first class, and she didn't want a repeat of that right now.

By some stroke of luck the may was still blissfully ignorant to the first year's butchery and confusion regarding his name. Which, by now, he would attest to it being purposeful on her part. As much as the man admired the great cathedral, his namesake was from elsewhere.
A thought he himself would rather feign ignorance than acknowledge.
"S'il vous plaît," he nodded while gesturing towards the path leading in that very direction. "And while we walk you can eenform me on your experience een working with equestrian species."
