Office of Professor Noble

As you enter Professor Noble’s office, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s utilitarian rather than decorative. Three walls are covered in shelves, two almost groaning at the weight of books on them, and the other housing a number of obscure potions ingredients and equipment. The fourth wall only lacks shelves due to the fireplace. The mantle is sparse, save for a gold wind up clock covered with a glass dome in the centre. A bright fire burns within the grate, a small copper cauldron suspended over it with a spatula self-stirring a mysterious liquid merrily bubbling away.

Of the other furniture, the large wooden desk dominates the room, for the most part covered in various academic books and papers interspersed with a few lesson plans and piles of student work for marking. The only corner not to be covered in paperwork holds a coffee pot and two photo frames, the only evidence of Ignatius’ family. The first contains a torn and tatty picture of a young girl, Professor Noble’s step-daughter, proudly knelt down in her cricket kit, still wearing her pads, and holding her bat. The second photo is clearly much more recent, where Abigail has flourished into a beautiful young lady. A pride comes into Professor Noble’s eyes when he looks at it. It was on her suggestion that he applied for the job at Hogwarts.

While most of the furniture appears mainly functional, the chairs are the exception. Upholstered in an elaborate orange-gold fabric, with detailed carved dark wooden legs, both his own chair and the two for his guests are exquisite pieces in their own right. If Professor Noble has offered you one, do make yourself comfortable - they’re charmed to be just the right amount of cushioned.

Belle was suuuuuuuuuuuuuper excited about meeting her Potions professor. Potions was her absolute favourite subject..well..based on the limited stuff she had read and learned so far, so it was no surprise that she found herself at the office of the Potions professor.

She straightened up her attire and made sure no strand of hair was out of place before knocking twice on the professor's door.

Deep breath...this was going to go just fine.

It was Annie's feeding time, and the tortoiseshell cat miaowed loudly at his legs as Noble opened the can. Today's gourmet menu consisted of salmon, and he carefully measured half of it into her bowl, mashing up the chunks just the way she liked it before laying it down by the fireplace. He barely got his hand out of the way before she had her head in the bowl, apparently feeling all the starvation since breakfast. Anyone would think he didn't look after her.

Leaving her be to wolf down her food far too quickly, the Potions Professor had returned to his usual chair behind the desk and started shuffling through some paperwork when two knocks came at the door. He'd hazard a guess that he wasn't one of the usual suspects; it certainly wasn't Kodee's over-enthusiastic hammering, which, honestly, came as a relief. He wasn't caffeinated enough right now for the Gryffindor. Still, the voice that came through the wooden door was on the gruffer side of friendly.

"Come in!"

The professor's gruff voice caused the first year RavenClaw to jump a little bit. Maybe this could wait if he wasn't in the best of moods?

No..no it was too late. She had already knocked, might as well get it over with. He couldn't be worse than her grandmother could he?

She pushed the door open slowly and greeted with the professor with a "Good day" and a little wave.

"I'm Belle Moore." Because introductions were important.

He still held the paperwork between his fingers as his gaze rose to look at the doorway, and the young girl that now stood there. He nodded stiffly at the greeting. "The same to you." No friendly wave came in response; Noble moved his hand, but only to reach into the top drawer of his desk for a clip to bind the papers he was holding together. That done, he put the papers to one side before resting one hand on the other in front of him.

"And what can I can for you, Belle?" It was his only break of the day, and he was a busy man. Hopefully the girl had a decent reason for being here.

Belle closed the door behind her and stood directly in front of the professor's desk. Was he going to ask her to sit or was she just expected to stand there?

She decided to just stand there. By the professor's tone he didn't seem that welcoming to guests and she didn't wan't a social experiment to see if he really did or didn't.

"Well Potions is my favourite subject and I was hoping I could have a subject syllabus so I could go ahead instead of waiting."

He eyed the first year lingering there, getting the distinct impression she was going to be a time waster rather than here for a specific purpose. His brow furrowed, and her question hardly helped his initial read.

"...go ahead with what, exactly?" He was glad she was into Potions and all (though he suspected she liked the idea of brewing rather than any real practical understanding), but why was there always one that couldn't possibly wait until their first lesson together? Was it really that difficult to wait a whole seven days?!

"I assume you have a copy of Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger, as per the school supply list?"

Eniola was excited to get started on her task from Healer Beryl. Hopefully I'll be able to brew most of the missing potions myself. Then I can get the experience and make sure it's done well. Not that she didn't trust the Professor, but the other students may not be as careful if they don't know what it's for. She thought to herself. Even if it was a little arrogant it wasn't on purpose. She just knows her own abilities have proven to be well in this class and that was only confirmed with the OWL results she got back over the summer.

Feeling confident she walked up to Professor Noble's door and knocked three times, awaiting permission to enter.

The kettle that had been heating in the fireplace whistled merrily, and Noble stood to retrieve it. He poured the boiling water over the coffee grounds ready and waiting in his cafetiere on the desk, before returning the kettle to the stove and setting his timer for five minutes. The potions professor was looking forward to a break; for the most part, the second year essays he'd been marking had been trying on his patience.

Alas, a knock at the door quickly told him that his break might be wishful thinking. It tended to be, working at Hogwarts. "You may enter!" he responded.

As Eniola heard the Professor's voice welcome her in, she turned the handle to open the door. Standing just inside the doorway she greeted him, "Hello Professor, I hope I'm not interrupting you. I was sent by Healer Beryl with a request for some potions. I'd love to help brew any that you don't have in stock; I have the list right here." Eni said as she handed over the note.

I have been meaning to come and speak to you regarding refreshing the stores of healing potions in the Hospital Wing. While I have placed a large order of those products which must be bought rather than brewed, there are several potions which I had hoped you would be able to provide for the school. Perhaps some of your more eager students might be willing to brew them under your guidance. I have sent Miss Abara with this note as she wishes to volunteer in the hospital wing. I believe she is more than willing to work on whichever of the listed potions below that you believe her capable of brewing. The quantities needed are by the vial, just as an initial number to top up stores to the recommended minimum. If this is not agreeable to you please let me know as soon as possible and I will place an external order.

Furthermore, there is a large quantity of potions in the healer stores which have had their labels worn off or removed. I have identified as many as I am able, but some assistance with this task would be well-appreciated, however this is not as urgent a task.

Well, clearly she was interrupting him...but it was what it was. Noble took the out held note, his brow furrowing as he read it. It looked like a trip to the Hospital Wing would be required in short order; whilst the Healer might be unconcerned with unlabelled vials, Noble specialised in forensic potioneering and tended to suspect the worst. That was no fault of Eniola though, and he now looked up to the Hufflepuff. Even without looking in his mark book he knew she was able enough as a NEWT-level student. "You may indeed assist me," he said with a nod. "Since we covered the wideye and pepperup potions last year, those would be a good place to start...though I think it'll be worth an initial session revisiting aseptic techniques, given your efforts will be for healing use."

He placed the letter down on his desk, and reached for his weekly planner. He scanned his schedule, before looking back up. "Are you available to start tomorrow after dinner?" He needed to check the stockroom, but they should have everything they needed. Time was likely of the essence - it was prime flu season after all.

Eniola was excited for the opportunity. Any extra practice she could get, especially as she has NEWTs next year, would be amazing. Eagerly she waited as Professor Noble went over the note.

"Of course, tomorrow night would work well." She gave him a small smile. "Thank you Professor, I appreciate the extra practice in time for NEWTs."

She knew she was good with potions, but having a chance to work with the Professor one-on-one is a different opportunity, that she really appreciates.

He picked up his pheasant feather quill and dipped it in his inkwell, writing their appointment into his schedule with neat deliberate strokes. "Then I'll meet you at 7pm in the laboratory," he spoke as he lightly fanned the ink dry. "Bring your wand, textbook, quill and parchment. I'll provide the cauldron and ingredients."

Was there anything else? Or could he enjoy his coffee now?

"Sounds great Professor, thank you." Eni said as she began to back out of the room. "I'll see you then, then." She smiled as she turned and walked out the door.
