Default DADA Lesson 2 - Bubble Wonderland~

It's almost time for the holidays and while the classroom isn't decked out like Santa's vacation house, the Headmaster has sought to add a ....decorative touch to the room this afternoon. Indeed, when you walk in, it looks more like a bubble wonderland of sorts and less like a place where learning will take place.

Only knowledge of the Headmaster and his penchant for making you learn regardless will keep you grounded and stave off those frivolous hopes of a free period. It was never going to happen. At this point, it's only a matter of what and how you'll be learning.

Malachi stands in the centre of the room void of desks or chairs. He seems to be in his own little world, creating bubbles that float around the room while light, cheerful French music floats in the background. The windows are all wide open, curtains drawn with light washing into the room. There are also several fountains that create their own bubbles.

Peaceful, isn't it?

OOC: Welcome to another DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet!

CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona entered the classroom and was unsure if she was in the right lesson. After all, she didn't picture Headmaster Trent as the type to be surrounded by bubbles and cheerful music. "Er...hello Headmaster," she greeted before she found a spot a small distance from a fountain and stood there, looking around.

Gunnar was tired and more than ready for the holiday break. And of course there were no chairs. He should have expected that, but maybe that was a good thing. He wouldn't be tempted to doze off during the lesson. And that was never a good thing with what Trent often threw at them.

"Good afternoon, Professor," Gunnar greeted the Headmaster with a polite smile before finding and empty spot off to the side where he could stand. Bubbles. Lulling them into a false sense of security, or...? He hardly dared their lesson would be anything so light.

This was one Hufflepuff that was really beginning to hate anything French. Yes even french fries, even though those weren't really French. So the French-sounding music playing as she stepped into the DADA classroom was dimming her good mood. Though, she wasn't so petulant that she was going to be rude to the Hogwarts Headmaster over it. After all, it wasn't his fault that the Beauxbatons Headmistress had let them stay in their castle, then treated them like unwelcome guests. "Hello, Headmaster," she greeted, choosing to stand near one of the other bubble fountains. One that was giving her ideas....

Defense against the dark arts, Blake was still unsure about this class. He had improved all year so far, but he still felt like he never really got the hang of it. Blake was lost in thought as he entered the class room and stopped dead in his tracts.

"Bubbles??" He asked out loud, not really for an answer, but more because he frequently suffers from word vomit. Blake moved forward into the room, and stood for lack for chairs or desks in awe at the bubbles, maybe today was going to be good lesson after all.

Thing was, Cecelia was still wondering if the headmaster thought she was a bad apple because of what had happened with the headmistress and it made her a liiiiittle nervous to show up to class, but ONLY a little. Mostly she LIKED defense against the dark arts. The subject could be scary AND unexpected AND adventurous, which she LOVED. It was with this in mind that she held her head high and slipped into the classroom, only to be confronted with every three year old's dream, she was PRETTY sure. "Cool." It was.

"Hello Headmaster Trent," The small blonde offered the older man a tentative smile and tried to look SUPER responsible and ready to learn, she did, before going off to find herself a place to stand and admire the bubble fountains, which were REALLY amazing.

It went without saying at this point in the term that Kaiser was operating basically no sleep. Certainly not enough sleep. But it was the norm, so it was hardly anything to write home about.

He wasn't expecting the classroom to be so... like this. Peaceful, calm, soothing. Maybe a trick to lull everyone into a false sense of security and then spring something on them to teach a lesson to never let your guard down. Maybe. Kaiser was mostly wondering if this environment meant he was more or less likely to fall asleep, when it finally occurred to him that there were no desks or chairs in here. Well! That made things simpler. He couldn't sleep standing up, after all.

"Afternoon, Headmaster Trent," Kaiser greeted the man in question, once he'd processed the whole situation of the room. He then spotted Gunnar, and found himself heading his way before he even really had time to consciously decide to do so. "Hey." He stuck his hands into his pockets, shifted his weight onto one foot, and waited for the lesson to start.

Well this was certainly strange. Defense Against the Dark Arts was the class Avalon would have least expected to be filled with bubbles and happy music. Perhaps it had something to do with the upcoming holiday? Nevertheless, she wasn't going to complain about it. She could use a peaceful atmosphere after all the stress she'd been under lately. It seemed like all of her professors were trying to cram in exams and assignments before Christmas break.

"Good day, Headmaster," she said with a smile as she stood amongst the other students near the fountain. Maybe today's lesson would involve water of some sort? She couldn't really think of any other reason why there were bubbles and fountains in the room. Unless it was some sort of odd Beauxbatons Christmas decoration.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was quite sure that she had stepped into the wrong room the moment she noticed all the bubbles (what pretty bubbles too). She had actually taken a step, ready to back out when she detected Trent. She was in the right place then? Bewildered, she sidestepped a few bubbles on her way further in. “Good day, Headmaster,’’ Claudine said, her eyes not on the man but on a bubble approaching her. She went slightly cross eyed as it came ever so closer until it was aligned with her nose then… POP! It was gone in literally a blink of an eye.

She threw Trent a questioning look that said ‘Why are there bubbles here?’ then went to find herself somewhere to wait for things to begin.

By herself, of course.

Bubbles. The class was filled with bubbles.

Uhh??

Lucas walked slowly into the room, taking every opportunity to take a GOOD look around the room as he went. Was their lesson as harmless as regular bubbles? Or was Trent in some kind of holiday mood already? With....... bubbles? Yeah, he thought it was weird as well.

But it could be WORSE, he supposed, so he was going to have to accept this for what it was. Bubbles.

Just bubbles.

Speaking of the Headmaster, the fourth year eventually turned to look at him and shoot him a slightly wider smile. "Hey, Headmaster." Hello. Hi. Please tell him that it was just this. Bubbles and peaceful music and winter light. And the fountains producing the bubbles. Couldn't forget those!

It was peaceful!

This was definitely more like it.

Oh, it was beaaaaaautiful. Phoebe paused in the door and spuuuuuun in a circle, hands outstretched in an attempt to catch bubbles on her palms. They popped as soon as they touched down, but she kept trying. And blocking the door.

Oops. Scuttling through the doorway, Phoebe grinned at the Headmaster and tried to catch some more bubbles. "Good day, sir! It looks so pretty in here. Do you mind if I pop them?" Because there was nothing more satisfying. Pop pop pop.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It was a calming thing, therapeutic really. All the stressors in the castle, sometimes a man needed to just blow bubbles and pretend he wouldn’t soon be springing something on his students. They could aaaaalll relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Malachi experimented with the shapes he created. Erumpents, nundus, bowtruckles, the sky was the limit while he waited for the lesson to begin.

Speaking of students, the man could hear the pitter patter of feet getting closer to the classroom. It wasn’t long before they began to make their appearances.

“Hello, Jenovick.” He greeted the first year mid bubble blowing. ”Feel free to make some of your own, grab a bubble wand from one of the fountains if you don’t know the spell.” Bubbles for eeeeeveryone. The lesson would begin shortly but for now, there was no harm. Indeed, even once it officially began, there would be no harm in it.

SPOILER!!: McCarthy

Ah and another Slytherin to drift on in, one of his prefects no less. Malachi greeted the boy with a welcoming grin and a gesture to a fountain with the bubble wands perfect for making bubbles should he decide against using his own wand. “Afternoon, McCarthy. Don’t be shy, add some bubbles.”

Everyone was welcome to add bubbles, unless they’d rather he fill the room on his own. A monstrous task, in truth, considering how many of them popped the moment they bumped into anything.

So yes, grab some bubble soap.

Look at that, right by the fountain. That was already half the journey. “Afternoon, Ojeda.” Trent greeted lightly, pausing a moment to add more bubbles to the room. There was definitely such a thing as too many, but not under these particular circumstances.

“Bubbles?” He offered, gesturing to the fountain she stood by that held several bubble wands. She could help herself.

“Bubbles!” The Headmaster replied enthusiastically to the boys question. It wasn’t exactly one that needed further explanation—not yet, anyway. The room was full of bubbles and should he choose, he was more than welcome to help create more. The offer to take a bubble wand from one of the fountains that was extended to the other students was quite open to him, too.

“Take a crack at a few. Who knows, you might be good at it.”

Everyone should be good at it. It was bubble blowing...not a higher branch of Transfiguration.

“Hello there, Summers.” This one definitely got a smile as he gestured her to any of the bubble fountains. “Help yourself.” Each contained bubble wands. Did she care to have a go at it? Bubbles were just what the room, and the lesson, called for. The fact they were so aesthetically pleasing was a sure fire bonus. Already, the man could see some of the students taken by the sights. That would hopefully keep them interested when things really got under way.

Though if they became a distraction...that would be its own problem.

SPOILER!!: Kaiser

“Kaiser.” The Headmaster returned the boy’s greeting with a nod of his head. Was it just him or did the Slytherin always look like he could use a comfy bed and some blankets? Was that a teenager thing? He’d read somewhere that they needed copious amounts of sleep in order to function. With the level of dysfunction taking place recently among his students...Malachi was willing to believe most of his students were sleep deprived.

“Bubbles?” If he was interested, there were still many bubble wands in the fountains scattered about the room.

“Afternoon, Sinclair.” Another that drifted relatively close to the fountains. Perhaps she would also be interested in creating some bubbles of her own. The more the merrier...usually. Sometimes. Come to think of it, there were several scenarios he could think of where the more people you added was the worse it became.

Thankfully, this was not one of them.

“Still plenty of bubble wands if your interested.” Malachi gestured to the closest fountain, an open invitation to her and anyone else.

He hadn’t missed the look, just like he hadn’t missed the way Blaze almost backed out of the classroom before realising this was in fact Defense Against the Dark Arts and the bubbles were a part of today’s scene. It was understandable. This wasn’t the usual set up the man had for his lessons but this time was necessary...for the most part. Kinda.

“Grab a bubble wand and we’ll see where it goes from there.” He suggested, motioning her to grab one from the fountain. Her classmates had already hopefully taken him up on the offer and with the bubbles popping faster than he could make more now that he’d stopped to do the greetings, a little help wouldn’t hurt.

And there was his sweet, summer child. Dakest. The look on his face as he took in the room, told Trent the boy had accepted this as the lesson. Granted, this wouldn’t be nearly as terrifying a lesson as some others they’d had but he couldn’t help the twinge of both amusement and guilt. It was wrong to get the Gryffindor’s hopes up like this but...also worth it.

“Dakest.” He returned, pleasantly. Yep, good mood all around. So peaceful. So calm. Enjoy it while it lasts? Nah, he’d leave that part out. Best not spook the boy unnecessarily.

It really wouldn’t be that bad. “Bubbles?” He could grab a bubble wand from the fountain and make his own if he wanted.

Precious bean #4.

And look at her precious beaning by the door. If only they stayed this way forever. He wouldn’t have any objections to that. If only his son could stay that way—if only his daughter never got that way. Was there a way to freeze them all? He suspected so but as it happened, the man liked his job despite the grey hairs it was giving him. It was simply not a good idea.

“I’ve got a better proposition for you.” He replied, levitating a bubble wand from the fountain over to the first year. “More bubbles? More bubbles.” They obviously didn’t have enough.

Malachi took a look at the clock on the wall, realising if he kept up this idle chatter, they’d be late in beginning. At the sound of the bell, the Headmaster flicked his wand and the door slammed shut with a loud thud. This should have come as no surprise to anyone by this point of the school year. There was also no need to re-explain what happened to those who decided being late was “okay”.

“Glad to see you all on time.” Regardless of how strong a word “glad” actually was. It wasn’t as if them being late would make him sad. Annoyed, most likely, but he wouldn’t lose sleep over it. What he would lose would be his evening to a detention no one wanted. No thanks. “You’re free to keep up the bubbles but let’s get focused. I’ve got an easy question for you, one that won’t require a textbook, just some memory and a little extra thinking.” The Headmaster paused to blow away a stray bubble that threatened to land in his mouth.

The joys of a bubble wonderland.

“What’s a jinx? What circumstance would ever make you decide to use one?”

He could already imagine some of the answers, but he’d see if any hit the nail on the head.

OOC:Hi everyone! Welcome to the official start of the lesson. I’ll be moving things along in about 24 or so hours!

Quote:
“What’s a jinx? What circumstance would ever make you decide to use one?”
Razz had no intention of not going noticed at his favorite subject, so despite being slightly distracted by all the bubbles, his hand shot up almost immediately at the sound of the first question of the day.

"A jinx, sir, is one of the three types of dark charms, the others being hexes and curses. Jinxes are, as far as I remember, the least severe of the three, but generally cause some sort of malicious or mischievous effect." he proudly stated, perhaps a little bit too sure of himself. As he gave the second part of the question a quick ponder, he may have begun to slightly second guess himself, but it was too late to take back the answer. All he could do at this point was hope it was correct. Or at least not too wrong. Either way, the question was twofold and it wouldn't do to answer just the one part, so off he went:

"If I had to escape from a pursuer, perhaps. If I was in some immediate danger, I could use a jinx to hinder my attacker, cause a distraction or protect myself. Carsyn literally had almost forgotten this was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Had the Headmaster not been standing there, she might have actually been QUITE confused because the decor was set up like nothing that Headmaster Trent would do??? Hence the blank expression and lack of a greeting. While she might have been surprised by the decor, the usual thump the door made when it slammed shut was NO surprise to the fourth year.

Jinx. Yea, that Ravenclaw boy basically said exactly what it was right there, but there was an additional piece to the question. When might she decide to use one? There were multiple reasons, but there was one circumstance recently that crossed the fourth year's mind. And probably something on the brain of every teenager since its announcement.

Carsyn raised her hand. "If someone is hesitant to accept an offer to be a date escort to the ball." Okay, so maybe that wasn't the most appropriate answer, but it may have crossed her mind as a possibility. Jinxes were meant to be taken lightheartedly, yes? Not cause harm? Cause she wouldn't want to harm a potential date.

"Uh..." Bubbles? Yes, they were everywhere. Did he want to join in with making them? "... I'm good, thank you." Did it make him a killjoy if he wasn't interested in the bubbles? Not really, as he didn't mind anyone else having fun.

Also, if he started making bubbles there would be no way that he'd be able to focus on the lesson at the same time. He'd never actually used a bubble wand before, so it would surely take all of his attention. No. Best not. Especially as the lesson was now starting.

Jinxes. Well, there was one jinx and its appropriate circumstances that sprang to mind, given the bubbles that were everywhere, but when Kaiser raised his hand, he went for a more general answer. "They are the least severe dark spell, and usually more 'amusing'-" He did finger quotes here. "-than the other kinds, but they can still be useful in times that you are under threat but do not want to harm the threatening person. If you think they are already cursed, maybe. Like Imperiused." The same could go for hexes too, Kaiser supposed, but that didn't discount the use of jinxes. "The Trip Jinx, for example, does not do any magical damage." Which, as far as Kaiser knew, was more difficult to deal with than bumps, bruises, or broken bones.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine had, in fact, hesitated when Trent told her that she should take a bubble. What would she do with one, anyway? She was more inclined to pop it. For this reason, the first year resorted to watch her classmates and the bubbles from her corner of the room. But when the door thudded shut, she gave her full attention to the Headmaster.

Or she tried to.

One bubble in the shape of a bowtruckle came hovering close. "What Kaiser said,’’ Claudine stated, her hand up but eyes fixed on Bowtruckle bubble which was now hovering in the vicinity of her head. “The Ebublio Jinx is a good one to use on anyone daring to interrupt me while I’m sketching.’’ Simply trap them in the bubble and watch them float away.

That in itself, would made a lovely sketch.

Bubbles?

Lucas glanced over at one of the fountains - the closest fountain - and then at one of the wands that was sitting there. Could he help himself? Was Trent encouraging him to help himself? That wasn’t a BAD thing, right? No. The man was generally calm and unless there were creepy creatures hidden in here, he was sure some extra bubbles wasn’t going to do him any harm.

With this thought in mind, the Gryffindor shuffled over to the closest fountain and picked up one of the spare wands. Blowing bubbles didn’t take any brainpower. None whatsoever. And he still didn’t know what they had to do with a Defence lesson but he was too busy blowing bubbles to care.

It was only when Trent started talking that he lowered the wand and considered the question that the man was asking. Jinxes? Huh. There were a few answers coming in but none caused him to widen his eyes quite like Carsyn’s answer over there. Jinxing someone because of a ball?? Uh???

Okay.

Lucas shook his head slightly and raised his hand - wand and all - up in the air. "You’re supposed to maintain eye contact on your target when casting one of these." Which he always found difficult to do. "I guess you could use it defensively, you know? To protect yourself before you even get attacked." Example? "Like the Anti-Intruder Jinx to repel intruders. Stop them before they get the chance to take anything."

Ewan couldn’t help but feel somewhat jubilant as he entered the classroom today, a precarious smile across his freckly face, even with the lack of a free period. Instantly his eyes were drawn to the floating bubbles as they floated, effortlessly dancing in the wind that was gently blowing in through the wide windows. "Bubbles? Huh. That's cool".

Deciding against toughing the delicate bubbles, Ewan focused now as the headmaster called for their attention, his eyes focused with a steely glint, eager for the knowledge of today.

A jinx? That was an easy one. Hesitating for a second, Ewan listened to some of his fellow class mates answers before finally letting out a smile as he heard one of the fourth year Gryffindors mention the ball (Carsyn). “Remind me never to mess with you” he whispered under his breath as he contorted his face into what he hoped was an innocent smile.

“A jinx is a charm. Some people consider it to be a dark charm but I guess it really depends on how you use it? I mean, if used defensively, is it still a dark charm?” he answered after holding his hand up in the air for a moment before being called upon (Headmaster).

Avalon couldn't help herself. The minute the headmaster said she could grab a bubble wand, her eyes lit up. Who didn't love blowing bubbles? She grabbed one sitting on the ledge of the fountain and waved it around in the air. Mesmerized, she watched the elegant ovals stretch through the wand and into the air. How in the world was Headmaster Trent making such elaborate shapes, though? Perhaps there was a bit of a science to blowing bubbles that the young Ravenclaw wasn't familiar with.

She placed the wand down as class began, somewhat fascinated to see what bubbles had to do with today's lessons. Maybe they were learning the Ebulio spell? She was pretty certain that it was a jinx that trapped the target in a giant bubble. Raising her hand, she prepared to offer a bit of her own insight to the question. "Like the others said, jinxes are usually the least severe of the dark charms. But they still can have pretty negative effects. One time, my sister was hit by a pretty nasty stinging jinx, and she had to sit in an aloe bath for six hours straight." Now that was an interesting evening in the Sinclair household. "And I'm fairly certain that they can be prevented by casting an Anti-Jinx beforehand."

And now for the second part of his question, when she might use one. She supposed she shouldn't be completely honest, because if she was, she might say she'd use a jinx when her brother was irritating her to no end. Plus, Trent would probably appreciate it if she thought in more DADA-like terms. "I'd use a jinx if I just needed to temporarily disable or distract my opponent. Not necessarily harm them, but just trip them up so for a moment so that I had time to think or get away."

Bubbles. Bubblesbubblesbubbles. Phoebe kept trying to catch them, especially since the professor had just given her the incredible gift of EVEN MORE BUBBLES. BUBBLES. By the time the professor was ready to start class, Phoebe had managed to collect herself a full bubble!beard and hat.

But she could focus. Yes. "Jinx is when two people talk at the same time and then one yells JINX real quick and the other can't talk until the first one says it's okay. And the one who loses has to buy the loser a bottle of butterbeer." Didn't sound at all like what everyone was talking about, and Phoebe patted her beard gently. Thoughtfully. "Also spells that cause bad stuff but not super bad stuff and mostly mean tricks when someone needs to learn a lesson about not touching your stuff."

Cecelia certainly wasn't going to pass up THAT offer, so the first year headed right over to the fountain to claim herself a bubble wand which she spent the remainder of her free time using to make the biggest bubbles she could manage. There was just something SO calming about watching bubbles float through the air, there was.

Most people had already offered facts about jinxes that SHE would've said, so the first year had to think extra hard to come up with an answer that didn't feel like she was copying someone else. When she'd thought of something, the small blonde raised her bubble wand brandishing hand and gave her answer. "Well, I know there are counter-spells for jinxes AND spells that can prevent jinxes from harming you, too." That was something, wasn't it? "Oh! And I'd probably use a jinx against someone in a duel." Were they dueling today? COULD they?

I could, uh.. use the knockback jinx, for example." He struggled to come up with a good example of how exactly he'd use the jinx, but he was certain he'd read of several clever and ingenious uses of all manners of jinxes when it came to self-defense. With several bubbles swarming him as he spoke, he looked rather silly, and given his inability to waft them away, one could be forgiven for thinking that, in a danger-scenario, he wouldn't even remember the knockback jinx existed, let alone cast it.

"Correct you are, Khaine." If the boy kept that up, he wouldn't have problems with his OWLs at the end of the year. They all still had those, in case they were wondering. This "field trip" to Beauxbatons changed nothing. "Jinxes do fall under the category of dark charms. Nice to see someone's doing their readings." Something he expected them all to be doing but he wouldn't digress.

"And they would be beneficial should you be trying to create some distance between you and your pursuer." As it so happened, the knockback jinx was particularly useful against certain dark creatures, but he supposed the boy already knew that.

"I..." What? No, really, what?

The Headmaster blinked several times at the Fourth Year, not entirely sure where to begin replying to a response like that one. Given the...ahem...scarlet and gold nature of her uniform, the man was more inclined to believe it, too.

"How many have you asked...?" How many had said no? Questions, he had them. "Let's not jinx our schoolmates. Won't end well for anyone involved."

Him included if he ended up responsible for the detention.

"Some would consider them to be 'amusing', yes. I don't blame them--not condoning any cross fire among you students, but some do have interesting results when done correctly." There, balance struck between being a responsible Headmaster and an appreciator of a well cast jinx. Nailed it.

"Useful when you don't want to cause harm but don't want to be harmed either." As opposed to not wanting to be harmed and not minding doing some damage in the process.

Some just had a bigger heart. Thoughtful but sometimes the difference between life and death.

And another that got a peculiar sort of look from the Headmaster. These students were a lot more willing to cast on each other than he cared for.

"In theory, yes, that would be a good use of the ebublio jinx, however," Because there was obviously going to be a 'however' following a suggestion like THAT, "we don't cast on our schoolmates. If we're having issues, we report them and have a professor deal with it." He remembered that meeting, largely filled with First Years, in the Inquisitorial Hall. The main reason for their poor behaviour was that they "didn't know".

Well. He was reminding her--and everyone else in the room--that that sort of behaviour landed you in serious trouble. Just saying.

"Excellent point, Dakest. Eye contact is important when it comes to casting and maintaining jinxes. The moment you break eye contact, the jinx is broken and you have to cast again."

Good to see the boy wasn't too distracted by the bubbles to pay attention. "Of course, that becomes more crucial for some than others. Like...say the knockback jinx your classmates mentioned. Once the target is blown back, there isn't really need to maintain eye contact...as opposed to say...a jinx on a broomstick mid quidditch game play. You'd have to maintain throughout."

It was all about choosing wisely while in the middle of a scrap.

"You're there but not there." He saw where the boy was going with his logic on whether the spell was a dark charm or not, however that wasn't how classification worked. "Intent does determine how dark a spell or even a creature is considered to be, however the standard classification is more black and white. Spells that have been created as jinxes, hexes or curses are all labelled "dark charms" regardless of the individual caster's intent. It is the intent at the creation of the spell that gave it the classification, not how you choose to use it in daily life."

So yes, a jinx was still very much a dark charm. Choosing not to use it with dark intent was admirable but did not change what it was by nature.

"Right on that one." The Headmaster affirmed. "While considered the least harmful of the dark charms, jinxes can still do a bit of damage in their own right and leave some nasty consequences." Something else he hoped they would all keep in mind before sending spells at each other all willy nilly.

"They do make good distractions, in fact some make it near impossible to keep proper focus once they've been cast. A good route to take when trying to gain the upperhand."

He was pleased with most of the responses thus far.

"Yes, good point. There are ways to prevent or put an end to a jinx." They were, afterall, the mildest of the dark charms. "A counter-jinx is one good one." It was something they'd touch on in another unit but today they would just be focusing on the jinxes themselves, one particular jinx.

"Duels would be an appropriate place to put them to good use. A sanctioned environment to cast at your peers."

Because, liked he'd said, it absolutely was not permitted otherwise and the man had had his fill of suspending and giving detentions for the year. The students needed to chill.

After taking the last of the responses, it was time to move on.

"Excellent points." Ones that told him not only that he had to keep an extra eye on some of his students but also that they had been doing the prescribed readings. It was a proven benefit, he just hoped they all saw them that way. "So a quick recap, Jinxes are a branch of magic known as "dark charms". They share the title with hexes and curses but those will get a proper look at later in the year. Today, we'll focus on jinxes." As most would have already been able to guess.

"They are the least severe of the three and can be countered. Specifically, we'll be looking at the jinx mentioned by Blaze; Ebublio." Was the room starting to make a bit more sense now?

"This is a jinx that traps whatever target within a giant bubble that can't be popped by mere physical force. Now, before we get into any sort of casting, I'd like you all to really think about this jinx." They wouldn't be needing their textbooks for this answer. "As we did with a few of our spells, I'd like you to tell me one disadvantage of using it." Advantages were typically easier to come up with but realizing disadvantages and weighing them carefully was important when trying to defend. Not weighing everything up carefully could have disastrous results. "I'd like an advantage, too, if you can think of one, but I'm looking mainly for disadvantages."

OOC: Sorry for the late move, everyone. The typhoon has everyone in my area evacuating just in case. You'll have about 24-28 hrs to get in responses. Catch ups are also fine ^^

Yes, okay they’re known as ‘dark charms’ but intent should really make a difference. If something doesn’t have a negative effect, should it really be labelled as dark? Biting his tongue, he made a few notes as the headmaster walked around the classroom and replied to the rest of the students in the classroom.

“Well, like you said professor, the jinx can be countered” He didn’t mean to state the obvious but the professor had answered his own question. It could be countered. “But I guess once someone is inside, it would depend on if they had a wand or not. A witch or wizard could use magic to get out I guess but some creatures may struggle more. It really depends on what you use it for” gesturing around now at the bubbles that still floated around the classroom. Honestly, he was just surprised at the fact things could breath in the bubble. Or could they? He’d never been in a bubble before so what did he know. “Hey professor, how do things breath inside the bubble?” he asked, his natural curiosity coming out now. He assumed that there was some way to breath inside otherwise there would be a bloody trail of deaths behind this jinx. Maybe he’d get someone to cast it on him to find out? Maybe the headmaster would do it! "Do you think you could jinx me with it? I wonder what it's like inside", the mischevious grin on his face now spreading wider and wider.

Something he expected them all to be doing but he wouldn't digress.

"And they would be beneficial should you be trying to create some distance between you and your pursuer." As it so happened, the knockback jinx was particularly useful against certain dark creatures, but he supposed the boy already knew that.
Razz struggled to contain his pride at the Headmaster's acknowledgement, and a tiny bit of it may have escaped through the grin on his face. "Thank you, headmaster, I wouldn't dream of falling behind in your class!" he beamed with a grateful nod. In-fact, the boy was several chapters ahead on account of his habit of reading textbooks for fun... But he wasn't going to say that. He didn't want the other students to think he was weird. Maybe after 4 years of putting up with him they already knew that, but he wasn't going out of his way to advertise it.

Again, Razz' hand shot up at the question. He wasn't first to answer this time, but he'd make up for it by coming up with a really, really, really good answer... Or maybe he'd just whiff it completely and bring shame upon his house. Either way, he made his attempt. "Well, sir, one disadvantage could be that, as a counter-able jinx, anyone with any knowledge of it could probably escape the bubble rather quickly.. And seeing as we're being taught about it here, I'd wager we aren't likely to come across anyone wanting to do us harm that couldn't. In that way, It'd be more of a hindrance to a pursuer or a temporarily disabling move than a deescalation of a conflict. Unless the opponent was disarmed, maybe." He thought about it for a moment before continuing. "Although, any sort of creature that isn't capable of any outward magical effects would be unable to escape, I suppose that's an advantage. That it can't be escaped by physical means."

Not feeling like repeating the same answer as anyone else, Dalia remained silent. But, she did agree with the whole 'intent' argument. Just because one had created a spell in the spirit darkness.....

Anyway, they were moving on. And Papa Carter would be disappointed because she couldn't think of a single disadvantage to Ebublio. She was sure there were more than just the two mentioned. She just couldn't think of one. "Uh.....whoever you cast the spell on could simply float away...?" And immediately regretted it as she realized how stupid that sounded.
