Default Herbology Lesson 1: Herb Spirals

Bright and early on the first day of classes you find yourself heading to the greenhouses after having your first breakfast with the Beauxbatons students. Your first class, a lesson for all Herbology students regardless of year level, is scheduled to begin at 8am sharp.

At the base of the impressive main greenhouses there is a smaller greenhouse that was mostly used for storage until it was assigned as a learning space for Hogwarts students, who are lucky to have both a greenhouse of their own (even if it is a small one) and a small garden area at the back. At least, it SEEMS to be a garden area - right now it is empty aside from piles of different soils, and stacks of what seems to be building materials.

In the greenhouse itself there is a large central table area set up in a squared off U shape. Inside the U there is a smaller table, which has various potted herbs arrayed across it. It DOES smell rather lovely, and gently stimulating for those of you who are still a little sleepy. To one side you can see directly through the glass into Professor Beryl's office space - it is small but convenient that she can keep an eye on the greenhouse from within it. However she is not within right now: at the top of the U there is a blackboard (currently blank) and your professor stands next to it, smiling in warm welcome.

"Good morning, please stow your gear in one of the cubby holes and label it with your name," There were several around the perimeter of the greenhouse, both under the workstations and above, "And take a seat at the table. Take out your journal and writing materials please - you won't need anything else for now, unless you have allergies, in which case please put a face mask on. While we wait for everyone to arrive, see if you can identify any of the herbs by scent or by sight - but stay seated please." It shouldn't be long, your professor always likes to start on time after all.

ooc: Welcome to your first class of the term! Both IC and OOC. For your reference, this lesson is directly before the DADA lesson that will be next to open. If you want to know more about this classroom, you can take a look at this thread. You can post your student arriving, claiming a cubby and stowing all their Herbology stuff, and taking guesses about what herbs they see and smell. I have an appointment in about 11 hours time, so I'll be starting the lesson after I get home from that. So its safe to say you have at least 13 hours and up to 16 hours to post arriving (I will give a heads up in the chat when I start on my reply ) As always, if you have any questions, you can PM me.

Index:
Question 1: What garden designs have you seen? How do you think the layout or the shapes of a garden effects the plants within it?
Question 2: how do you think the Three Druidic Elements apply to a spiral garden?"
some responses and last chance to answer the above question
Mini Activity: Identify ten plants from the table. Use your textbooks to help figure them out, and be sure to make notes on how you know what they are (identifying features etc).
Five minute warning to complete mini activity (you can still easily jump in here!)

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina positively beamed when Professor Beryl praised her line of thinking, She thought her answer was going to be either too obvious or too out there. Feeling pleased with herself, she listened intently to the next part of the lecture. The concept of the druid elements was beginning to make more sense to her, but before she had too much time to think about it, the class was moving on. Oh, so they were going to identify herbs today? Somehow she had a feeling that was where the lesson was going. This activity was right up her alley!

The first herb Tina knew immediately, more by smell than sight. It had dark green leaves, purple flowers, and a distinct scent that reminded her of a candy cane: peppermint. Another strong smell, this one a woody scent vaguely reminiscent of pine, hit her nostrils. It came from a plant with needle-like leaves, which Tina recognized as rosemary. This particular rosemary had white flowers, but upon consulting her textbook, she learned that they could also have pink, purple, or blue flowers. As she jotted down some identifying features of the two herbs, complete with sketches of the leaves and flowers, she was distracted by a sweet, soapy smell. She knew what it was, even before she looked up and saw the long stems and spike-like light purple flowers. Lavender... just like she had in her garden back home. Not her home as in Chateau Croyance, but the home she once shared with her parents. The smell brought back a flood of memories, and Tina shook her head. Now wasn’t the time for reminiscing! She still had to identify at least seven more herbs.

She refocused her attention on the nearest plant. This one also had long stems, but the flowers somewhat resembled miniature versions of daisies - white petals with yellow button-like centers. That must be chamomile! As she sketched the delicate tiny flowers, she couldn’t help but think of what a delicious tea they’d make. As a matter of fact, she could go for some right now! Maybe she’d find some in the tea room later, but for now back to the task. The next plant Tina identified was also edible - and especially tasty in salads or sandwiches. It had rounded leaves and white flowers; it was watercress. Tina needed to stop thinking of uses for the edible plants! It was making her hungry, and it hadn’t even been that long since breakfast!

Most of the plants Tina had identified so far had either white or purple flowers, but the next once she saw had a bright orange flower. It looked a bit like a marigold, but she knew it wasn’t a French marigold like she was used to seeing. What was that? She was going to have to consult her textbook for this one. Oh, it was a calendula. No wonder she thought it resembled a marigold; one of its other names was the pot marigold. The next plant that caught Tina’s eye was equally distinctive with its black stem and white flowers. This one she knew immediately as a moly; she remembered using it in potions class last term.

Potions ingredients seemed to be the norm, as Tina identified a plant with green-gray leaves and little yellow flowers as wormwood. Ugh, such a disgusting name for such a beautiful plant! She thought as she sketched. When she was finished, she looked at her notes again… just two left. Keeping with the potions ingredient theme, Tina spotted two plants that were covered in hairs. The first had pink flowers and round leaves, but its most distinctive feature was the white-gray hairs on its stems. Hairy stems and pink flowers like that could only mean one thing: dittany. The other hairy plant had hairs on its stems and its leaves and green-brownish flowers; There was only one thing Tina could think it could be, stinging nettle. She almost chuckled to herself as she finished her final two plant sketches. How funny was it that one hairy plant hurt people, and the other was used to heal them?

SPOILER!!: Tina’s notes

Peppermint- smooth stems, dark green leaves with reddish veins, purple flowers, smells like Christmas candy
Rosemary- small needle-like leaves, white, pink, purple, or blue flowers, pine-like scent
Lavender - long stems, tiny light purple flowers grouped together in spike-like shapes, perfumey scent
Chamomile - long stems, white flowers with yellow centers, flowers look like daisies
Watercress - somewhat rounded dark green leaves, white flowers with four petals
Calendula - orange flower with darker colored-center, erect stem
Moly - black stem with white flowers
Wormwood - greenish-gray leaves, pale yellow flowers
Dittany- round green leaves, whitish hairs on stems, pink flowers
Stinging nettle - hairy stems and leaves, greenish-brown flowers

Professor Beryl watched the students as they began to get up and move around the plants, also taking note of who wasn't on task, as well as who the more enthusiastic ones were. Enthusiasm wasn't a requirement of course, but it was nice to see. Glancing at a battered looking, but serviceable clock ticking silently away on the wall, she projected her voice enough to be heard by all.

"Five more minutes on this task, everyone."

Searching for this plant was taking a lot longer than expected. Should she give up and move on? Just as she was about to stop she found the plant she was looking for. Comfrey. Quickly she wrote it down and gave a brief description.

Her next one was easy to identify. Ginger had a very distinct smell that Gemma didn't necessarily like. It's a very sharp smell and her mother made her drink it when she felt sick. Not a good time.

Only five more minutes?? Gemma needed to speed up if she wanted to get all ten of these completed. Moving swiftly on she spotted a cute little yellow star that had yellowish blades of grass. Riffling through her book again, Gemma found what she was looking for. Star grass. What a cute name!

Eight wasn't bad. She could live with that. She thought she was doing fairly well for someone who knew nothing about plants and herbs. Maybe she had time for one more.

She circled the table, looking for anything easy to identify. She stopped in front of one. Her parents used these in potions. They were a sensitive plant that looked like peas. She once tricked her sister into eating one which caused her voice to change. Gemma smiled faintly at the memory. It's wartizome!

Nine. Only one more.

This was stressful. A familiar scent caught her attention. She finally stopped at a very leafy plant. Getting closer to it she took a deep breath in. Was is... sage? Just wanting to finish this assignment she wrote down sage.

SPOILER!!: Notes

1. Peppermint- Smells like my toothpaste! It's a very strong and pleasant smell. The leaves are usually fuzzy.
2. Lavender- Cute purple flowers! Pleasant smell with a lot of medicinal benefits.
3. Indian Snakeroot- Weird looking plant. Red stems & green bobbles on top. Good for anxiety and insomnia
4. Chamomile- Tea time baby!
5. Calendula- Fake marigolds. Pretty orange flowers.
6. Comfrey- Sad, wilting plant. Flowers look like a bell.
7. Ginger- Gross smell. Helps with illnesses.
8. Star grass- Cute little stars! On grass!
9. Wartizome- Pea looking plant. Good for potions and changing someones voice.
10. Sage- Smells like dirty mint?

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Cole was a little bewildered at first when they went from talking about garden designs to identifying plants. He observed his peers for a few moment’s before he joined in the group around the table with a parchment and quill ready along with his textbook. Studying the nearest plant and leaning forwards to sniff its smell he noticed its characteristics; small round green leaves, whitish stem and pink flowers which made him quickly identify it as Dittany. Cole moved on to the next plant noting its big green leaves and stem and it’s smell which made him think of celery, but he knew that his dad had said that it was called Lovage. Moving on to next one he could almost see his grandfather pick up the small green leaved and stemmed plant as Knotgrass that he grew in his garden to later make knotgrass mead with for the winter.

Here Cole paused momentarily to check over his notes as it was a little queue in front of the next plant. When it was his turn he sniffed the plant and immediately took a step back from the bitter smell. Rubbing his nose he eyed the silvery green stem and closely sitting green leaves for a second before he consulted his textbook. He eventually identified that he had come to the Wormwood plant that his grandma used often to scare away irritating fleas. The next plant Cole came across really stood out from the rest with it’s small pink flowers, spikes and green leaves and he after a quick check in the textbook to see if he was right wrote down Vervain as the plants name. He had thought it was something else entirely which was okay, it wasn’t like he was an expert or anything. He was there to learn.

With 5 plants identified Cole felt accomplished but Professor Beryl had tasked them to identify 10 so it was just to trudge on over to the next plant with it’s white flowers and green leaves and stem which made him think of the ocean and pirates and that’s when he remembered, the plant was called Scurvy grass. Moving on to the think mint smelling plant Cole didn’t have to think long before he identified the dark green leaved plant with its purple flowers as Peppermint. Mint always made him think of mint pastilles and christmas. The plant next to peppermint made him think of another sweet thing he got to eat now and then namely Ginger newts. The ginger he recognized from the yellow and purple flowers, green leaves and green stem.

The two last herb plants we’re also rich in colour the first was the Calendula with it’s big striking orange flower and long, green and hairy leaves and last but not least the Betony. The betony he identified from the triangular green leaves and big dark purple flowers. Done with his task Cole shuffled back to his seat to look over his notes carefully. He didn’t want to have missed something important.

SPOILER!!: Coles notes

1. Dittany: small round green leaves, whitish stem and pink flowers.
2. Lovage: big green treeish leaves and stem, looks like celery
3. Knotgrass: small green leaves on green stem, an ingredient in knotgrass mead
4. Wormwood: silvery stem, close sitting green leaves, bitter smell, used against fleas
5. Vervain: small pink flowers, spikes, green leaves, used in medicine
6. Scurvy grass: big white flowers, green leaves and stem, found in coastal regions
7. Peppermint: minty scent, dark green leaves, purple flowers which makes me think of muggle mint pastilles my great great grandma used to eat around christmas
8. Ginger: Yellow and purple flowers, green leaves and stem. Used in cooking a lot
9. Calendula: large orange flower, erect stem, green long and hairy leaves
10. Betony: triangular green leaves, big dark purple flowers that sit closely together, used in medicine

Right.

Activity time.

Jillian is just hoping that most of the plants that they are going to identify are easy because she is not good with plants. I mean she cooks and when cooking sometime you put in herbs and from the smell of some of these she has worked with before. Her grandmother taught her how and she could not stress how thankful she is that she made her sniff all those herbs before chopping them and then dropping them on the food.

She stood up and with her book on her hand she roamed around the plants and she notices some of the herbs right away... because, well, cooking lessons from her grandmother. She moved nearer towards them and tries her best to identify them. The first one is definitely Peppermint, it has a strong aromatic scent and the pattern of the sides of the leaves are very prominent. Plus the purple flower that goes with it kind of gives it away.

Ahh, the next one that caught her eye is Rosemary. The rosemary is very much distinctive. That's something most people can tell by one look. Next she finds a rather large and sort of circular type of leaves. It looks rough from where she is standing, this can be a sage. She's not sure but meh, she'll stick to her guts with this one. Honestly with this next one, Jillian seems to be mistaking it a lot for rosemary. She doesn't really know why but somehow they look similar-ish. Perhaps not but oh well. That's the thyme.

AAAAAANNNND same with the next one, another peppermint looking. Wait! Is she the only one finding them similar? Jillian jotted that one down on her notes 'lemon balm' - the scent sort of gives it away. Moving towards the white colored flower with a yellow center, she smiled looking at this one. This one is a give away-- Chamomile. Now if that flower is a give away, she won't lie that the purple, clump looking flower is probably the easiest. Lavender.

Spotting a green colored plant she is really not familiar of. She's been going back to the same herbs and she's starting to lose track of what are the herbs that still needed to be identified. She opened her book up and skimmed through the pages, making sure that she finds a perfect match with the one she is trying to figure out... Surprisingly, she didn't expect that the plant would be a ginger.

WHOAH.

Exact match from the book and here she thought that ginger just grow the way they are. Those brown, tree looking with a rich smell when you cut it. Man, Koreans love ginger. They have that one soup that is chicken and ginger. It smells really strong. She's not a big fan of it.

Finalllllyyyy.

She needed one more and then she is done. Phew. They needed to identify ten and this is her last plant. This rather dark green tiny leaves. She looked it up in the book and easily spotted it with a few skims. Rue? This one is called a rue? She haven't seen one before. Ever. So they also somehow sorta look like a Dittany. The leaves that is but with rue, it has yellow flowers.

And with that, she returned back to her seat and worked on her answers. So far she is hoping that these are all correct.

SPOILER!!: Jillian's notes

Peppermint - strong aroma, green leaves
Rosemary - purple flowers, dark green leaves, leaves looks kinda like needles
sage- dry leaves, rough exterior, long light green leaves
thyme- short plant and small leaves, brown stem
lemon balm- citrus scent, bright colored and bushy
Lavender- lavender flower, smells just like a lavender
Chamomile- white flower with a yellow center
ginger- long and thin plant, leafy stem with yellow-green flower
Rue- dark green leaves, yellow flowers
Dittany- short and rounded green leaves.

Okay, deciding not to ditch class he 'stretched' and took at look at the plants and herbs that lay before him. He recognized some of them from his own mothers kitchen supplies. But most he had no clue what he was looking at. But he was here, mind as well give it his best guess. He started with Sage, which he new from the very beginning.

Quote:
1. Sage - light green leaves
2. Peppermint - smells like peppermint
3. Thyme - small leaves with a brown stem
4. Lavender - smells just like a lavender
5. Rosemary - purple flowers (but not like Lavender)
6. Ginger: Purple and yellow flowers
7. Chamomile- Yellow center with white flower
8. Dittany
8. Dittany - this is a guess
9.
10.
Blake took a look at his notes .. he had only 7 for sure answers .. one guess and two blanks ... he sat still staring at the plants willing another answer to come to him.

Wait, only five minutes left? Gunnar spared a glance at the clock himself almost in disbelief then moved further down the table. He was just halfway done and only had a third of the time left. He'd better hurry if he wanted to finish on time.

Okay this next plant resembled a yellow daisy who had seen better days. Or at least the flower did with its sparse, fringy petals. But the leaves were large, smooth, and flat, and they were green and healthy, so it was likely that the flowers were supposed to look that way. It was tall too, but Gunnar wasn't as familiar with this plant. He knew he had seen it before, but the name escaped him. He'd have to look it up. He flipped through his book, having an idea of where to look based on some of the plant's traits as well as the family he thought it might belong to. There... elecampane. He hastily jotted down some notes then quickly moved on.

The next plant was fairly familiar to Gunnar based on the appearance it presented - tall stalks of silvery-grey leaves and the way they grew on it conically reminded him of a pine tree. Wormwood. He had used this in potions enough to recognize it. He made a few more notes in his journal before the next plant, and a quick glance at the clock.

What was this next plant? Gunnar peered at it curiously for a moment. It reminded him of a kind of nightshade, though probably not belladonna, because of the way the berries grew within the flowers and the flat, oval leaves. But he wasn't sure about which type. He took a moment to jot down the qualities of this specific plant in his journal, along with a more careful drawing, even if he was running really short on time, and turned towards the nightshade family of plants in his textbook. It took him a moment but he soon identified the plant as withania somnifera, or ashwagandha.

He was a little relieved to see that the next plant was easily recognized as lavender, knowing that he had a minute or two at best left. The tiny purple flowers on the spiky stalks as well as its scent was unmistakable, but he still made a few notes in his journal. Maybe if he had time once he got back to his seat, he could add in a drawing.

One more... and Gunnar's eyes fell on a fairly unfamiliar plant. Sure, he could have taken the easy way out and just picked out a really common one that he'd clearly know and call it a day, but that wasn't what he was about when it came to Herbology. He wrote down what he could see about the plant - small white flowers, hung like a pendulum, similar to a snowdrop, but with green stripes. Long, slender stems and similarly shaped leaves, very dark green, almost black. He turned the pages of his book carefully, until he came to a similar description - moly.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was now back at her seat. Her books sat open before her but before she began to pore over the textbook to locate the descriptions of the herbs she had scribbled down earlier, she made notes, as Beryl had requested:

SPOILER!!: Notes!
Herbology Lesson 1:

Herbs identified immediately:
  1. Fluxweed
  2. Knotgrass
  3. Dittany
  4. Valerian
*I have seen these before, that’s how I knew what they are.

Herbs identified by smell:
  1. Ginger

Now that that bit was completed, she worked on decoding her descriptions. “Big green leaves. Small white flowers. Green berries.’’ This was repeated like a mantra in a quiet voice as a fingers moved along the textbook and her eyes scanned the plants description listed there. Soon, she was pausing over one particular herb. “Hmmm. Could you be Indian Snakeroot?’’ Claudine decided she would run with it and adjusted her notes.

SPOILER!!: Notes!
Herbology Lesson 1:

Herbs identified immediately:
  1. Fluxweed - green stems and leaves
  2. Knotgrass - green stems and leaves
  3. Dittany - dark green stems and leaves
  4. Valerian - green stems and leaves with small, pink flowers
*I have seen these before, that’s how I knew what they are.

Herbs identified by smell:
  1. Ginger- Leafy green stems, green leaves, yellow & purple flowers, strong & sharp smell
Herbs identified with the help of textbook:
  1. Indian Snakeroot- Light green stems and leaves, purple or white flowers.

And there were only five minutes left? Oh no!

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

The next plant that Trinetta examined had just a few spindly looking leaves. It looked a little sad, actually. Like the leaves would just fall right off if she moved too quickly past the plant. After consulting her notes, she determined this was probably the Moondew plant. It looked like it would be easy to liquify so it could be used in potions.

The next one was very familiar to Nettie. She recognized the sage almost instantly, because her mother had gone through a HUGE sage phase a few summers back and had insisted on "cleansing" the house multiple times a week. It had been awful, and the smell of burning sage was still stuck in her brain and brought back to life almost instantly as soon as she saw the plant. Yup, that was sage all right.

The next plant definitely looked minty. The shape of the leaves was almost a dead giveaway. She leaned forward and gave it a sniff - it had a nice minty smell to it, as she suspected. She looked at the list, and knew that she had already identified the peppermint correctly. This one didn't have as much of a strong scent, which made it lemon balm by default.

Continuing her search for commonly eaten plants/herbs, Bernadette rounded the corner of the display and locked eyes with a plant she'd seen at dinner yesterday.

"Watercress," the first-year murmured to herself, quickly making a note and a drawing of that on her paper. It always reminded her of baby spinach, and wasn't her favorite food, but was definitely one she'd had before. Her mum was more partial to watercress.

Speaking of mum... "Coneflowers!" Bernie beamed at the purple leaves of the echinacea. She definitely didn't know how to spell the official name of those, but honestly, they were so pretty! She would have never guessed they were an herb, were they? She surprisingly knew many of these wizard plants. Huh.

And there was another purple-flowered one that looked familiar to Bernie, though she wasn't sure... "Fluxweed?" she guessed, jotting it down anyway to see if she was correct later on.

Time was ticking, and Lucas was growing very aware of that the longer he stood there, writing about Scurvy grass. Maybe that's why the description for it was so...... terrible? Yeah. In fact, all of them weren't at their best but Beryl had to expect nothing great, right? His Runes descriptions said as much.

Next. He was following the line of plants that he could recognise because that was an easier way of getting the ten that was needed - ? - for this task. It was probably because of this reason that he looked over the plants on the table, even squinting a little to try and find one he recognised. Something he might've used in potions or something he might've sat near during his many picnics in the back gar-

Oh. Oh?

He took a few steps to the right and craned his neck around a plant to catch sight of one of the smaller plants. It wasn't easy to notice but once he had his eyes on it, he started wondering why he didn't notice it before. The leaves? Rounded. And they were green but they had white on them, too. White hairs, if he had to take a guess. Then there were the flowers attached, all droopy and purpley at the edges.

Yeaaaaaah, he knew exactly what this was.

Scribble.

Lucas wanted to move on, but his eyes found another plant and he....... stopped. It was a weird looking plant, and maybe that's why he was looking at it so much. The peas? The red bits? He couldn't help but stare at it, and then, without thinking, move closer towards it. The peas were slightly turned, and he didn't know why. That is, until he let out a very small "Whaaaat?" under his breath, which only caused the peas to turn even more.

...............

Uh. Okay.

The fourth year rushed back to his seat, grabbed his textbook and shuffled back again. He started flipping through it quickly, paying more attention to the pictures than anything else on the pages. There were a lot listed here - a LOT - and the frown on his face only deepened as he looked. But then, close to the end of the book, his eyes found a picture of the pods, and a close up of the peas inside and he...... stopped. Again.

Wartizome? Wartizome?!

Well, that was going in his notes.

He didn't know how long he had spent on the Wartizome one but it was time to move onto something else. Something...... like....... huh. His eyes caught onto a blue plant and he found himself staring at that, instead. But the flower heads were pointing downwards? That only confused him. Why were they pointing downwards? Didn't they need sunlight? For food? To grow?

It wasn't long before he started flipping through the textbook again. Finding the right plant was harder this time, especially when there were a lot of blue plants in here. But they didn't match what he was seeing in front of him, not entirely. Maybe it was the flower-heads or the way the leaves were arranged or the fact that the description didn't match up at all.

A few page flips later, and he found a page with, probably, a very sad-looking picture. This..... this had to be it, right? Moondew. A plant that flowered at night, something that, after reading, caused his mouth to form a small 'o' in understanding. It was also very popular, according to the description, even being used in butterbeer.

Shame he couldn't try that for himself.

When he was done writing down his notes, Lucas moved onto a plant that was very close by. Another one with droopy-looking flower-heads. He glanced between the Moondew plant and this new plant a little suspiciously. This was just a coincidence, right? Plants couldn't do that to one another, right? It didn't sound possible.

Moving closer, the fourth year, tilted his head to get a better look at the flowers themselves. The droop didn't really help but he was sure he could see something yellow on the inside. In the very centre of the plant. What were those things called? He had no idea. And he didn't know what the plant was called either, even after this close inspection.

Having the textbook was becoming really handy.

While writing, the Gryffindor slowly moved around the central table. His eyes weren't on the plants, but were on the notes he was making, but he still managed to pick up something. A smell. A very, very faint smell that just about reached his nose after all the minty smells nearby. Something that smelt like.......

........... sniiiiiiiiff!

Ginger? Was that ginger?

Lucas looked up and around, his eyes looking for the plant. Or just the roots. Did Beryl have the roots out? He didn't know, but he was looking for it, just in case. His eyes, however, landed on a very thin-looking leaves of a plant that seemed to be giving off most of the smell, according to his nose. He took a very deep sniiiiiiiii-

Cough cough cough.

Ack! Oh Merlin.

Ginger. That was ginger. And he was moving away as quickly as he could because that smell was sharp.

Text Cut: Notes
- Lavender:
It's lavender? I mean, you can notice it anywhere. It's purple and the flowers are small and at the end. It smells calming, like lavender should. I'm sure my neighbours have this in their garden.

- Peppermint:
You can smell peppermint from a mile away. Everyone has smelt peppermint before, and probably tasted it too. I think the smell is what really made me recognise it because it's so distinct. And I guess the leaves are arranged in size order, where it looks like there are leaves on leaves on leaves.

- Stinging Nettle:
The leaves look very similar to the peppermint ones but they're much sharper and even LOOK like they'll sting you. Even the edges of one leaf are spikier and less rounded than the peppermint ones. Then, there are the hairs on the stem which you shouldn't go near.

DON'T GO CLOSE TO THIS ONE.

- Valerian:
We use these in potions so it's easy to notice. The buds are very pink but the flowers are a white-pink. Mostly pink. They grow in bunches, which makes it easier to collect if you want to use them in potions or for healing. Did you know they're in fudge as well? I didn't know that.

- Scurvy grass:
This one looks very similar to Valerian and is also used in potions but the flowers are white and have a green centre and that's how you can tell them apart. And scurvy grass doesn't really grow in bunches as much as Valerian does. Plus, the leaves almost look like spades, from what I can tell.

Maybe it's easier to tell them apart, I guess.

- Dittany:
The leaves are rounded, much more rounded than most of the other plants here. And they have white hairs on them, which gives them an even more unique look. And the flowers? They're droopy and have purple edges to the petals. Dittany's used in potions too so it's pretty easy to notice.

- Wartizome:
This one has peas. This actually has peas in a pod. And did you know that the peas turn? I didn't know that could happen. According to the textbook, it's used for cooking and potions and can change your voice, too. That's pretty cool. And you have to sing to it, which I'm not going to do.

- Moondew:
It's blue. The flowers are blue and long at first but then they spread out all the way. Almost like they're flopping out. I think that's the key part in recognising them. They're used in a lot of potions, too, especially in Healing potions, but you shouldn't use them with Doxy ingredients.

- Moly:
The flowers are white and are drooping slightly. I don't know why, but that happens. The stems look like they're changing colour closer and closer to the ground. According to the picture, that's because their roots are white and have a bell-shape to them. It's supposed to be very good for defence.

- Ginger:
It's ginger. You can smell it from far away. It has a unique smell, you know? The leaves are very thin but very long, something I didn't expect. The leaves spread right outwards, with only the top ones almost flopping over. They look pretty normal until you get to the roots.

I don't recommend getting too close to this one. Not because it's dangerous, but the smell is strong.

Perma .... what?? Carsyn's expression changed rather quickly as Professor Beryl lectured on and the fourth year was REALLY trying to keep up. The vocabulary itself wasn't difficult to comprehend, but when all meshed together, had her all going like o.O as she glanced between Cole and Carys, wondering if either of them were understanding about the elements talk. Or rather, the Druidic elements, because the four basic elements she could tell you how those affected a garden. Spiral garden. Was it shaped like a spiral? Okay, Carsyn was definitely getting herself confused and it was a good thing they were moving on ....

To plant identification. Where was MARK GUNTER when you needed him? Cause like when you don't understand something, that's when a Ravenclaw Best Friend came in handy. Which was for just about majority of her schoolwork. She glanced over at Cole after studying the one plant in front of her for a good minute. Cole was writing. She whispered over at him, "Want to compare lists?" Aka, he should share her list cause literally she only had one thing on her list, which was the peppermint plant she'd identified when she first came in. Oh and lavender. So that made two things.

Yoyo was finally over pouting at the Professor, she might have gone on for the whole class but pouting and all the drama that came with it- affected sighs, and the like- took a lot of stage energy and, tbh she was kind of bored of pretending to be ever-so-offended. Having put away her theatrics for another time, Yoyo properly put her mind, body, and spirit into the class- a much easier task, especially with her very clever friends by her side.

With her notepad tucked under her arm, Yoyo had slipped away from her desk to wade through the herbs, sniffing here and there, but mostly looking for stuff she knew by heart- Stuff like the pillowy soft leaves of the Watercress, or the brilliant, tangy taste of Verbena in the air- that one had been really tricky to place.

She didn't dare touch the herbs, even with her gloves tucked on, and so she used her pen to carefully poke at some glowing blue leaves. Yoyo hummed, and poke, and hummed and poked again but the plant did not react and neither did anything in the first-year's memory. Cross that one off the list. Yoyo walked on, grinning as she spotted the yellow and white flowers she absolutely knew as chamomile- Her mother had one of these in their kitchen. Yoyo wanted to give the flower a little kiss but stopped herself upon remembering the admonishment Beryl had given Phoebe.

"Hola, Ging." The brunette giggled, writing down all the particular ways ginger was ginger, like how you'd never expect something that looked so dry to be so juicy and full of flavor.

"Hey Cece, is this one Foxglove? I think it's foxglove." Yoyo squinted. The stem of the plant was a vibrant green, it's flowers tiny and blueish purple. Yoyo had never seen foxglove but she'd read about them in books- she had no way of knowing that the flower she'd imagined foxglove to look like more accurately resembled Fluxweed.

The thing that surprised Kaiser about there being five minutes left was not that he expected there to be more time, but less. Much less. In fact, when Professor Beryl had started to speak, he had been convinced she was calling an end to the activity.

... Ugh. Okay, well. He couldn't very well go back to his seat with his work only just over halfway done. Well, he could, and was still very tempted, but he half-expected Beryl to choose that moment to go wandering around the room and glancing over the work of everyone who was finished. Then he'd have to explain and she'd do the disappointed and/or stern teacher thing and then he'd feel guilty and it just wouldn't be fun. It really was a lot less hassle to just do the rest of the work.

So he did, but not before throwing a long, wistful glance at his empty seat over at the table. I'll be back for you.

Back to the herbs, and Kaiser chose another one that he was pretty sure he hadn't identified yet. Wouldn't it be something if he identified the same herb twice and came up with two different answers?

This new plant had purple flowers, which didn't help because a lot of the others did too. The needle-ish leaves were distinct though, and it smelled strongly of... something, Kaiser didn't know what. He recognised the smell, sure, but he didn't know it. He decided to focus on the needles and identify based on that. Sloppy work, but it would do.

So, according to the textbook, rosemary had needle-like leaves. It also had a strong scent, and purple flowers, which was more than enough for Kaiser to decide that that was what he'd found. Was he correct? Merlin only knew, but he was writing it down.

Thank you, next.

Oh, this one looked... um... unique. Kaiser had to blink at it for a moment to really process what he was seeing, and then went back to leafing (ha) through his textbook. He was looking for mention of some kind of protrusion or 'weird cone flower' but neither term came up on his search, so he instead tried to find a description that matched the long, upright leaves. Kaiser stopped turning pages when he caught sight of the word 'vertical', and honed in on it.

So, the book was talking about an erect cylindrical spadix, which was supremely unhelpful. Kaiser knew only one of those words. 'Spadix' was clearly an object, however, and it was likely to be the key word here. Kaiser flipped to the back of the book so he could search for it in the index. Said index sent Kaiser to page 274, and there, Kaiser saw an illustration of... exactly the weird thing that was on the plant in front of him. Which meant... he'd found it? Yes? No? He was going with yes. Switching back to his notes, Kaiser added sweetflag to the list.

How long had he wasted on that one? Kaiser glanced over a Beryl, then sidestepped so that he was in front of plant number nine. Another one with purple flowers, and leaves coming off of it kind of like in a square. And it smelled... oh. Oh. Okay, well, say no more, plant. Mint was added to Kaiser's notes without any cross-referencing. He didn't know much about the difference between spearmint and peppermint or any of the other mints (were there any other mints?), but this definitely smelled minty, so he was just going to go on that alone.

Yes, yes, he supposed that there was probably some kind of plant out there that smelled like mint but was actually deadly poison, and so identifying based purely on that instance would be, uh... bad. BUT. You know. Running out of time.

Kaiser was by now convinced that the last five minutes had to be up, and that he would definitely have no time to do another fully fledged investigation in his textbook for another plant, when he spotted one final plant he could easily name on sight.

Stinging nettle.

Oh yes. Before coming to England, when he was thirteen, Kaiser had lived for a short amount of time with a foster family who resided in the Grunewald. It had been his first proper taste of nature, and though he had learned almost nothing about plants (other than what the best trees were to climb), he had become painfully acquainted with stinging nettles. Magic had sorted him out, of course (the first time he'd had an ailment cured with magic, as it happened) but he still remembered.

Kaiser headed back to his seat at long last, and finally, finally added plant number ten to his notes, with some very in depth annotations of course.

SPOILER!!: Notes
Rue - yellow flowers, blue green leaves
Lavender - it smells like lavender
Dittany - round and fuzzy leaves
Lovage - pointy leaves
Comfrey - sad purple flowers
Calendula - big orange flowers
Rosemary - needles, purple flowers, strong smell
Sweetflag - vertical leaves, spadix
Mint - it smells like mint
Stinging nettle - I just know

Cole was double checking his notes and adding tidbits he had forgotten to his notes when he heard Carsyn’s hushed voice. Looking sideways at his cousin he nodded "Sure, I’ve identified 10 plants. How many have you found?" Pulling his parchment closer so she could see what he had written, he in turn saw what she had written down and wondered out loud. "Which one was lavender? I didn’t see that one on the table." Family shared so he didn't pay much mind to the fact that Carsyn hadn’t identified as many plants. It would have been different if it had been someone he didn’t know so well or someone he didn’t like.

Faye's quill was moving so rapidly across her parchment the entire lesson as Professor Beryl had addressed the class with her questions, among the many responses she heard or notes she scribbled. Even if her hand had begun to cramp every now and then, she refused to fall behind, mainly because she was learning a lot and she was a lot and the fact that she was overall enjoying the lesson.

Her head perked up when the Professor told them they were allowed to get up and move around the room to identify ten plants, WITHOUT touching them! She nodded and was soon moving about the room textbook in hand for reference. She was planning to first go by visual, but her nose could not deny the undeniable fragrances of Lavender, Ginger, and Peppermint right away. Who could mistake those very specific fragrances!?

As she continued on her nose wrinkled another fragrance coming from a plant she approached. Looking quickly in her book confirm before nodding, "Mhm, definitely Chamomile...."

Time seemed to be flying as she came across more plants to identify, luckily with the help of her book like Dittany and Calendula. Soon moving to the other side of the room, she would soon find, Thyme, OH then not too far from that would be, Rosemary! As she heard the Professor advise the class they only had 5 more minutes she realized she only needed to identify two more plants!

Trying to remain calm she glazed over any plants she might've missed and OH, those white flowers reminded her of Four Leaf clovers, and according to her book, they were known as Watercress. How pretty. Almost as pretty as this next white plant that caught her eyes next, which, oh how interesting, it was known as the Moly plant. It had a black stem? How fascinating!

And there she had done it, 10! Phew, what a relief! She quickly moved back to sit down at her seat as instructed before the Professor would address the class again.

SPOILER!!: Herbology Notes

Calendula - Big orange flowers
Thyme - Small grey leaves, fresh and spicy scent
Rosemary - Long stems with pine-like needles

"Take a look, it's in a book." Yoyo sung to herself, clapping her hands together in lieu of finishing the song. She untucked her pen from her ear and peered over Cece's shoulder, she just couldn't wait to see if she'd been right or not- sometimes patience was harder than it looked.

Chewing on the tip of her pen, Yoyo glanced up ever so briefly from the flip-flip-flipping pages of the textbook to watch the other students. It looked like class was gonna be wrapped up soon, a real big shame because she'd been enjoying this walk through the flowers-guessing-game a lot. "What?" The brunette said, her attention shot back to Cece and the book she held. The photo was a lot different from the plant before them, but rather than be crestfallen, Yoyo was all the more excited. "I knew it wasn't foxglove." That was certainly not true but Yoyo firmly, good-naturedly believed it was. "Okay." She grinned, taking a step closer so she and Cece were shoulder to shoulder. "Did you get taller?" Yoyo suddenly asked, realizing that the blonde had a good inch on her.

Oh, notes. Right! Yoyo took out her notebook and flicked it open to the first page, she doodled a little- a tiny little daisy- before focusing back on the herbs.

Yoyo and Cece were doing so well, and Phoebe inched her way towards her friends to see if they had any new and amazing insight. She only needed a few more plants, but she'd hit a roadblock again. Like she really thought she should recognize ginger, since they had it at home, but the part you ate was the root and she couldn't SEE the root. The book said it had yellow and purple flowers with a stem made of rolled leaves... oh. There it was. Duh.

And what was the pretty one with purple bell-shaped flowers. And more importantly, was it safe to lick? Phoebe flipped slowly through her book, wishing for a color-based glossary so she could look up all the purple flowers at once. Maybe... lavender? Nope, no bells. Foxglove? Might be foxglove, so definitely NOT safe for licking. Phoebe wrote it down, just in case, but she kept flipping.

"You noticed!"Cece HAD gotten taller, it was true. She was PRETTY sure she was going to be as tall as her dad, who was PRACTICALLY a giant. She was ALSO pretty sure that his long arms were one of the reasons he was SO good at seeking, but that was something she'd be keeping to herself. "Mum says it's because I've been eating lots of grow foods, which I THINK is a way to trick me into eating more vegetables," She added solemnly before wrinkling her nose because no THANK you.

But plants. They were supposed to be talking plants.

"Dunno about what that herb IS, but look, this picture of ginger looks a LOT like that one on the table there." She tapped her BOOK and then pointed to the table. "Did you get that one already?"

Spotting Phoebe, the blonde offered her friend a GRIN. "I'm learning I don't really know as much about these plants as I thought," She admitted. It was STILL a lesson learned, so she figured she was doing okay at this herbology student thing.

"Yeah! It's hard not to when you're towering over me!" Yoyo good-naturedly teased, craning her neck back to properly look at her friend. One inch might seem nothing when you were a very tall person, but it did a lot on an eleven-year-old. Yoyo thought Cece practically looked like a new person! "Maybe I need to eat more grow vegetables." Yoyo seriously said before turning her green eyes back to the book.

"Mhmm, I got ginger ages ago." Yoyo nodded, tucking her pen once more behind her ear, she reached forward and flicked to the next page of Cece's textbook. "What have you got, Pheebs?" she asked, glancing at the other, other girl. They could work together, right? Pool their resources (that was one of her dad's favorite words).

The next plant that Nettie encountered was the first one to have some sort of fruit growing out of it. They looked kind of like those little cherries. She leaned in and sniffed, picking up a very potent smell. She consulted her notes again, and the lightbulb clicked on in her head when she realized it was Ashwagandha. Of course! Those little berry looking things were a dead giveaway.

Alright, just two more to do...Nettie moved on to the next plant and immediately knew what it was. The smell alone was enough for her to identify it, but it was also the purple flower growing from the stem that made it hard to miss. It was Lavender, of course.

The final plant Nettie inspected was probably one of her favorites. It was the prettiest bloom on the table, with bright pink petals that were extremely aesthetically pleasing. She couldn't remember the exact name, so she consulted her notes for the last time and located the name of the plant - Echinacea. Ah yes, the one that was good for colds! That was probably a smart plant to have around the house...if she was in to herbal remedies, and all that...

Only five minutes left? But Octavia wasn’t done!! She had been so distracted by all of the smells and pretty herbs that she didn’t get as much work done as most of her classmates or friends. And what she did have in notes wasn’t particularly related to the lesson itself. Tavie had written down the plants she had recognized and with it the potions it was used for. She didn’t remember all of the things her mother had taught her, but she remembered enough.

Quote:
Dittany - dark green round shaped leaves, used for healing wounds
Moly - white flowers, used for wiggenweld potion
Lavender - lavender colored flowers and beautiful scent, used for aromatherapy
Aware of the time she had left, Tavie continued inspecting the plants without touching - that was important- and writing down more needed to reach the ten.

Default please read the ooc note!
lives in a hobbit hole || Ern and Touz's Nuzzle || roflysst || looking at a seed packet

"Alright everyone, time is up, please return to your seats." She said, smiling around at them all after taking note of who was on task and who was not. Generally they all seemed to be working hard which she liked to see.

"Now, remember with herb spirals the outside of the spiral starts at ground level and gradually spirals upward to a high point in the centre and there are differences in exposure, temperature, and moisture levels as you go along the spiral. However, you must first orient your spiral correctly. As a general rule, in the Northern hemisphere, the lowest part of the herb spiral traditionally is oriented facing North, so if you had a small pond at the bottom of your spiral it ought to be on the North side. You can of course adjust this but you must be aware that if you change the orientation of your spiral, then the quadrants which have the most shade or sun, or moisture or dry soil, will differ somewhat, but if you stick with the pond side on the North in the Northern hemisphere, then plants in the North section will be subject to the most shade, herbs in the South will have full sun, herbs on the East side will have morning sun, and those on the West side will have afternoon sun, with drier soil at the top of the spiral and more moisture toward the base. As for the direction of the spiral, it should go in the same direction that water flows down the drain- so, in the Northern hemisphere a clockwise spiral." Easy enough? She hoped so.

"Some of you may have guessed that we will be making our own herb spirals. You can choose if you'd like to work on your own - in which case I'll be teaching you some spells to miniaturize the plants in question- or if you want to work with others and create a full-sized herb spiral. This will be your long-term project for the year, alongside your regular Herbology work." Professor Beryl said, looking around the room.

"You can use some of the plants you've already identified, but you may find that you'll need to make some other selections to better suit the microclimates of your spiral." A stack of papers began handing themselves out, each student getting a blank template they were able to use as a map for their spiral planning.

"Stella mentioned using a map earlier, and that's exactly what you'll be doing. You may use this template or create your own. If you change the orientation of your spiral, please mark the directions accordingly on your map so that you can plan out which plants will be where based on sunlight and moisture levels." And she would guide them through the process.

"To prepare for your assignment, you can take notes in your own time regarding the list of plants I provided and begin deciding which you might like to include. For now, please pack up your things and hand in your identification lists so I can check your work - you'll find your marked work back in your cubby next time you have Herbology class. Thank you everyone, if you have questions you may come and see me in my office later today, for now though, do enjoy your Defense class which I believe you have next." She collected the students work and waved them out, then retired to her office.

ooc: I'm so sorry I disappeared you guys, I got quite ill and because we have a pretty tight schedule for lessons we'll be cutting it short here rather than extending it out. However, what would have been the main activity will be combined with the long term assignment (for which a thread will open for in the next few days) so you won't miss out on points opportunities or a chance to have your character get stuck into things. Thank you for coming!
