Default Flying Lesson 1: Flying Carpets

Banner credit: Suziella

The flying instructor was not hovering around on his broom as per usual. In fact, he had both of his feathered coated boots firmly on the ground.

And he hated it.

Still, Haraldur walked back and forth on the pitch, waiting for the students to arrive. Next to the pacing professor was a large tent, containing the materials needed for the lesson. The entrance was closed off however, preventing the students from peeking. Scattered around the rest of the pitch were… A lot of stuff. Large black cauldrons sometimes used for Creaothceann, the hula hoops normally intended for flying basics as well as randomly acquired items Haraldur had found around the school. Lost your encyclopedia on mythical creatures? It’s probably out there somewhere on the pitch, aiding the flying instructor at a later stage of the lesson.

Once you arrive, have a seat in the grass. There are fur coats provided if the grass is too cold for your liking. Still, please try to avoid grass stains. Those coats are extremely expensive, after all.

OOC: Ho ho ho! wut Keep in mind that this isn’t the first IC flying lesson of the term. And no brooms needed for this one!

Class will start in approx 24 hours -- Tuesday 19th September 7pm GMT +2. Class has officially started! While you wait, why don’t you freshen up on those flying rules? Yeah? Yeah! Ta ta <3

Her expression sank even further at the Professor's response. On the one hand, she was relieved to know she wouldn't have to force through the exercise while she felt like this but on the other...she didn't like missing a lesson. There was only so much she'd get from the others telling her about it later and even from just watching. Being such a hands on learner, at some point, she would need to get on that carpet and learn the steering intricately for herself.

For a few silent moments, Jessa stared down at her magic carpet, the one that decided to show her up or save her the agony depending on what angle you took it from. When her gaze did rise to the Professor again, it was anything but enthused.

"I'll see the Healer after the lesson, if that's okay." Sitting out was one thing, leaving the lesson completely and thus missing out on things she couldn't even begin to imagine would plainly be a no.

Hearing the activity, helped her better put into perspective her need for a break. The young girl couldn't imagine herself racing in her current condition without subsequently throwing up. Maybe.....maybe it really was for the best. That decided, the Ravenclaw lowered herself to the floor, grimacing a little at the way it seemed to make her head spin before turning her attention to the others.

In the absence of being able to attempt the instructions the man had given, she would have to settle for watching the way her classmates did it while trying to deconstruct it all from the ground.

Oops? Had she gone overboard with her extensive memorization knowledge of Magical Carpet regulations? And yet, Professor B had said impressive, so perhaps she was okay. And the misuse thing was a definite thing, something which Skylar underlined in her notes.

But enough of that, because they were going to get to FLY magical carpets. Note to self: new gift she wanted for her seventeenth birthday which was still almost two years away; a flying carpet.

"Up!" she said in a commanding tone after selecting one. Nothing. She was FINE with a broom, but a carpet, really?!? She wanted to go on a magical carpet ride! Focus, focus. "Up!" And this time, it worked, hovering just above the ground. Clamoring onto it and situating herself in the middle, she did have to admit it already felt loads more comfortable. No wedgies to be had, for one. Though it wouldn't be practical for playing quidditch, but as a transportation method? It definitely seemed realistic. One just had to remain seated and balanced; it was like a meditation pose, but hovering in the air instead of the ground.

”Well done, miss Kemp! Well done!” The little first year managed to at least get a hovering reaction from the carpet. And it made him proud. He puffed his chest out and looked over at the man from the Board. Did ya see that? DID YA?

Text Cut: Abey

Text Cut: Derfael

Pride that the two boys had gotten the carpet to hover was mixed with worry that the Boards-man would think he didn’t have the students under control, the instructor chuckled nervously. ”There, there boys! Take a seat, take a seat.

He then gave the boys a pat each on their shoulders. ”You can surf all you want when class is over.” He added quietly, shooting a glance at the man from the Board. As long as the man with the clipboard wasn’t watching, the kiddos could stay after class to practice with the carpets.

That wasn’t a bribe. It wasn’t.

Text Cut: Olivia

”Well done, miss Holden!” Haraldur nodded as he circled around her hovering carpet. ”Well done.”

Text Cut: Etta

Haraldur watched Etta get the carpet to hover before climbing up and taking a seat. She showed more and more confident on a broom and it looked like she was ready to try out the carpet as well. ”Very good, miss Kramer!” He called from where he was standing before letting his eyes drift over the rest of the group.

Haraldur nodded at the fifth year. ”Keep trying, miss Durant. It’ll come to you.” She was a skilled flyer, the carpet would hover soon enough.

”Nearly there, miss Spinnet, keep practising.” Haraldur mused as he passed the young Gryffindor.

Haraldur watched the second year struggle at first but then finally getting the carpet to hover. He gave her two thumbs up from where he was standing as she took a seat. ”Well done, miss Sparkes!” He called out to her. He was so proud.

Haraldur stood behind the young boy, watching with great interest as he discussed with the carpet. Discussed with and convinced to hover. The flying instructor took a few steps forward as soon as the boy had taken his seat. ”Interesting way of handling it, Mr. Dooley.” He chuckled. ”Well done, my boy.”

Haraldur raised his eyebrows. Another student who talked to the carpet? It seemed to work. The carpet was suddenly hovering and Haraldur laughed. ”Well done, Mr Salander. Well done. Now, take your seat.”

Several carpets were now hovering and the students were getting on. Haraldur returned to the front of the group and clapped his hands twice to get their attention.

”Now, there is a sticking charm on all of your carpets, but you should still learn to sit properly.” He sent a look in Abey and Derf's direction before he sat down on his own carpet. ”It will be easiest to control your carpet if you sit centered, crossing your legs.” He crossed his legs and grabbed the front edge of the carpet. ”To move forward, you lean forward.” He leaned slightly forward and the carpet instantly obeyed, hovering forward. ”To stop, you pull the edge of the carpet towards you, without leaning back.” He pulled on the corners and the carpet came to a stop. ”If you were to lean backwards, the carpet goes higher up in the air. Now, there is a height restriction so it will only be able to reach 1 meter above the ground.” Height wasn’t exactly what they were going to practice though so it didn’t really matter. ”If you want to go lower, you pull the corners towards you and lean forward at the same time.” He demonstrated this as well and then sat up straight looking at the students with a happy smile. See? Piece of cake.

”The carpet will respond to you, just like your broom does. Lean to the left and it will go to the left, lean right and it will steer to the right. The posture and swaying of your body affects the way the carpet moves. All right? The sticking charm and the anti-roll charm prevents you from falling off, so you’re quite safe.”

They could still crash but still. Semi-safe.

”To try this out, I want you to steer the carpet towards any of the items laid out on the pitch. Grab a hold on one of them and return with the item. One of the positive aspects of flying carpets is their ability to hold several people or items. Once you have returned with an item, cleared the pitch and showed that you can control your carpet. We’re going to race!”

What miss Purcell didn’t know, didn’t hurt her.

”You will race to the end of the pitch, touch the wall and then return. The rules are pretty simple; Fastest flyer wins.”

OOC: OK. First part of this main activity is to get the carpet under control. Each student should retrieve an item from the pitch and return it. (This could literally be anything that might be found in a lost and found because… Well. Haraldur looted the lost and found.)

Then we break the law WE RACE. This can be done in pairs or in a group of people. It’s up to you. Race to the other side of the pitch, touch the wall and return to the others. You can write your desired outcome but please, do not RP the outcome for your opponent.

There is no required amount of posts. Please label your post number if you’re doing multiple. There is still time for catch up on the mini-activity if you haven’t done so already.

Text Cut: Steering instructions:

Hover: Command the carpet to rise: “Up.”
Sit: Cross-legged because stability - centered (not too much to the right/left)
Go forward: Lean your body slightly forward while keeping the carpet steady.
Stop: Pull the corners of the rug towards you - do not lean backwards.
Up: Lean back.
Down: You pull the corners of the rug towards you and lean forward.
Left/Right: Lean left/right.

You have 5 days to do this. Have fun, race each other, fail to race each other, dooo, plaaaay, beee <3

We will wrap this up on Thursday the 28th 7 pm GMT + 2.

- Josie

There was an equal mix of excitement and dread when the Flying instructor began demonstrating what they will be doing next. He would want nothing else but to make like a bandit with these items and zoooom all around the pitch, but he could barely make the carpet rise, how much more actually controlling it?

"Work with me come on pal...." he murmured as he carefully sat himself in the center of the carpet and crossed his legs. "Up... higher..." he commanded the carpet, which paused for a moment before actually fulfilling his request. "Latency huh?.... " he murmured under his breath, mostly to himself but also to the carpet. He leaned forward and back, side to side, alternately grabbing the edges of the fabric and letting go, and so far the carpet was following his actions. See it does respond to non-verbal intentions... or maybe its just really good at reading his body language.

And now for the test. He leaned forward with the intention to glide towards a textbook. The carpet followed but then he completely forgot inertia and he ended up floating directly above it. Oh nooo. He wiggled on his seat this way and that, trying to swipe the book beneath him--

*F L O P*

And now he found the book. With his chest. What happens when one leans too far left on the carpet? Thats what happens.

Derf had better be ready to really actually properly discuss this one of these days because Abey was PRETTY INTERESTED in all that spell stuff, but it had to take a backseat now because he was WAY MORE INTERESTED IN CARPET SURFING.

Except...

"Awwww..." Abey's response to the groundskeeper was a disappointed groan, and he was ready to REALLY try and talk him into letting them actually SURF the carpets, because Baldvinsson always seemed like the type who could sort of be talked into the FUN stuff as long as it wasn't dangerously stupid or anything. But just as he opened his mouth to try and make said argument, Abey caught sight of the direction that Baldvinsson was looking.

.......

"... Okay, sir. Yes, good idea." Because NO WAY was he going to let an actually good professor get in trouble because of HIM. LOOK AT THAT CLIPBOARD. Clipboards meant business and Abey wasn't in the business of making life hard for any of his professors who were at the mercy of one.

Along with Derf, Abey sat down on his carpet the way they were supposed to, silently agreeing with his Hufflepuff friend that yES AFTER CLASS THEY WOULD maybe SURF. But for now it was the lesson and in the lesson they had to do things, like learn to actually fly the carpet, which - now that Abey thought about it - did actually sound like a good idea... to learn to fly it like regular... instead of trying to surf straight away...

BUT WHO HAD THE TIME???

... They did, actually. In the lesson. Right now.

Repeating the groundskeepers' instructions over and over and over and over in his head, because he struggled to really remember all the details of things said to him, Abey tried to ingrain into his mind exactly how the 'controls' of the carpet worked even as he leaned his body so that he was turned around slightly. This way, hopefully when they all started flying, he wouldn't immediately end up in a five student pile-up.

Once it was time for them all to get started, Abey did just that, and LEANED forwards on his carpet, urging it forwards so that he fly further out onto the pitch and find something to return. ZOOM.

Oh. Okay. "BYE, DERF."

Maddie had heard the professor say something about rewarding the first person to finish, but there was no way she could set her sights that high. She was just happy her carpet had gotten into the air, held her up, and was so far staying where she wanted it to stay. She still hadn't gotten brave enough to go faster than a slow crawl in the air. The last time she had tried, she'd sped forward so fast that when she'd pulled back on the carpet, she'd almost given herself whiplash. Maddie did slowly lean just a little more forward, picking up her speed just a teeny, tiny bit. Maybe in a few minutes, she'd go fast enough to actually finish the activity on time. For now, though, she was content just where she was.

That was, until she saw that Emmeline needed help. OH, NO! Forget trying to finish first! Maddie turned her carpet toward her Gryffindor friend and started flying in Emmeline's direction. "IT'S OKAY, EMMELINE! The professor said to just pull back on the edges," she yelled. "If you lean back, you'll keep going up!" She had no idea if Emmeline could hear her, but she was going to try her best to help out the slightly older girl. She knew Emmeline would do the same if it was Maddie in trouble. In the process, Maddie hadn't realized she'd picked up her speed a little. She was actually flying around at a decent pace, never mind the fact that she was more worried about helping Emmeline than collecting a random item and trying to return it.

Vi cast a glance over to Ace who was patting his carpet very... ummm... She raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the concept, and then turned back to gaze at the Professor before glancing back at her boyfriend. Well that was certainly one way to convince the carpet.... she supposed.... And it had worked because in a matter of minutes Tenacius was hovering too. Huh.. Neat.

She turned her attention back to the Professor this time and felt her stomach flop when he said that they would be racing these flying carpets. Sure. Hovering on them was nice and all.... but racing. It sounded exhilarating but also kind of.... dangerous. Adjusting the way she sat on the carpet, she made sure that she was in the center before she tried anything else. "Ok..." she spoke when she was ready and accidentally leaned back, causing the carpet to rise higher into the sky. She straightened her posture all of a sudden when she realized that she was quite high up- higher than she had intended to be. Oh dear... MERLIN. She grabbed onto the tops of the carpet, holding on tightly. Don't look down... Don't look down... Vi told herself as she looked ahead of herself at the objects ahead of her as well as the flying students instead of the ground (which mind you... it was only three feet away... but still... three feet was on a flying object....) *GULP*. I can do this.... I can do this... It's only three feet above the ground...? However the carpet stopped her from going any higher and she sighed.

Then Olivia leaned her body slightly forward about an inch or so and felt the carpet beginning moving slowly forward. Okay.... Okay... Slowly but surely. She leaned more forward and then....

Zooooooooooom

The carpet picked up speed and Olivia was going faster and faster towards the objects. Okay... She needed to slow down because she was coming closer to a... She blinked. What was that? A pair of sunglasses resting on a tower of books? Vi reached out her left hand, keeping her right hand on the carpet, as she came closer to the sunglasses. She'd have to pull a tight turn. If she didn't then she'd whack into those books which wouldn't be pleasant. She leaned to the left a little to align herself up with the glasses better and then she plucked them off and took a quick lean to the left and pulled the edges of the carpet towards her.

Then still with the edges of the rug towards her, she leaned a little bit forward to lower her flying height. Phew. That was one item acquired.... Her eyes glanced around the field until she saw Ace trying to get a book and.... She winced. "ACE!" she cried out as she flew over to him. "You okay?" She was about to say more but then she heard more students yelling towards Emmeline. And was that Derf and Maddie yelling?

What... in... What... What was going on? Her blue eyes widened as she saw Emmeline speeding past and Maddie chasing after her. Emmeline looked out of control.... Derf and Maddie were trying to get her to pull up but.....? From over here... she was unsure if she could catch her. What if the girl ran into a wall or something and went... SPLAT? She winced again. There must be some sort of cushioning charms around them, right? "PROFESSOR!" she called out, pointing to the speeding girl.

Wow, real graceful there Prefect.

The Curly Top pushed himself off the ground and massaged his own chest for a moment. If that textbook was made of glass or metal, he would now have a broken heart. Like literally.

He whipped his head towards the direction of someone calling his name. "I'm... I'm fine." he smiled sheepishly as he waved at his girlfriend. How embarrassing, the guy who rules the broom and the hoverboard couldnt even pick up a book with a glorified floating doormat.

Lets try that again shall we?

"Let me on let me on let me on...." he murmured at the carpet as he carefully mounted it again, book in hand this time, and leaned towards the direction of where they drop the collected items off.

He moved his body to loop the carpet back towards the scattered things and this time took aim for something that sticks out further from the ground. Like that bucket.

SWOOP on the bucket handle. Success!

Flying carpets were officially NOT AS FUN AS BROOMS!!! Emmeline loved flying on brooms -- the wind in her hair, the speed, the freedom, the FUN -- all of it, but this was not the same at all. And and, leaning back wasn't helping her stupid carpet stop or anything!!! Maybe she'd gotten a broken one or...

...Or maybe she should pay more attention to the wall that her carpet seemed to be headed riiiiight for. The second year was definitely in full freak out mode when she heard her name being shouted (twice, actually) and then Derf was chilling on his carpet next to her like this flying stuff was nothing. Which was reallllly super good 'cause it meant that he'd know what to DO.

And sure enough, he was shouting instructions at her and his voice sort of cut through the dangerous blankness that her mind seemed to fall into every time she got too scared. Emmeline gulped, sat up as straight as she could, squeezed her eyes shut and pulled up on the carpet's edges and--

Opened her eyes in pure amazement as the carpet STOPPED in midair!!! Yesss!!!! Emmeline turned her head in Derf's direction, being super careful not to turn her body from its forward-facing position at all and BEAMED at him, calling back: "THANKS DERF!!!" He was the best ever, did he know?

It wasn't long until Maddie caught up to them too; Emmeline could tell that the first year had been shouting, but she'd only really caught her name. Probably Maddie had actually, you know, paid attention and stuff to Professor B. too. She shot the slightly younger girl a biiig smile and yelled back to her: "THANKS MADDIE!!"

The second year's breathing was evening out and stuff; she was ready to try flying properly again, buut she turned back to Derf first and asked tentatively, "Ummm...it works more like a broom 'cept for stopping and going up, right?" Since apparently leaning back meant "go up" to these things.

"UP." She practically demanded that the carpet hover for her, about to start questioning whether it was somehow sentient and somehow knew that it wouldn't be able to hold her weight, when it came off the ground.

Like, actually started hovering. Felicity practically clapped with glee, before clambering onto it.

Now, what had he said about steering?

She needed a different approach; one that didn't involve her raising her voice at the carpet, perhaps.

She closed her eyes and took a deeeeeeep breath.

Calmly, but with conviction, she directed her thoughts at the magical carpet.

......UP......

After a moment, she opened her right eye a crack. Had it worked...? Wow. Wow, wow, wow, it actually had. The fifth year laughed out of sheer delight and, just as Professor Baldvinsson announced that they were moving on, took a seat on the carpet. It was hovering about a foot above the ground but, because it was fairly steady, it didn't feel much different than sitting on solid ground. Only a slight give in the fabric and a vague floating sensation gave it away. And the visible space between the ground and the carpet, obviously.

Aaaaaanyway. Listening. That was what she was doing.

Professor Baldvinsson explained how to control the carpet - it was self-explanatory, tbh - and what they were going to do. She was starting to feel pumped for this lesson. At least they'd be doing some form of flying, even if it was on magical carpets and at a limited height.

Time to give it a go.

Rhea took hold of the front edge of the carpet and, after hesitating for a moment, leant forwards.

....WHOOSH!

Yes, all the students were getting the hang of it. Soon they would- a figure swooshed by him and he squinted his eyes to recognize the back of a certain Ravenclaw. ”Well done, miss Durant. Don’t forget to pull on the edges to slow down!” And eventually stop. The other option was crashing into the ground and that wasn’t really an option.

Haraldur still didn’t like that she would sit completely still outside on the cold ground but nodded his head at her answer. ”Very well, miss Cambridge. At least, keep your warmth with one of the coats.” He said, handing one over before strolling over to the rest of the group.

It didn’t take the young Quidditch player many tries for the carpet to hover. Haraldur gave her an encouraging nod. ”Remember to focus, miss Diggory.” He mused as she would move on to steering the carpet next.

Tenacius’ struggles didn’t go unnoticed. Haraldur watched from the other side of the group as the prefect zeroed in on an old textbook. He didn’t comment the situation. Instead he waited for the boy to find his balance again.

As Haraldur watched Tenacius struggling, a carpet zoomed by him carrying Abey on top of it. ”Remember to pull the edges to stop, Mr Botros!” He called after him as he passed.

There was something being said about the fastest flyer, but Maddie knew that wouldn't be her. She just wanted to actually get up in the air and stay there, let alone make it to the other side of the pitch.

She looked down at the carpet and focused on it raising up in the air and staying there. She focused on it so hard and strong that she almost forgot world around her. "UP!" she commanded, as strongly as she could manage. The carpet began to rise in the air slowly, but soon enough it had risen to the full height it was supposed to go, AND it managed to stay there. "YES!" she cheered. She tried to remember the directions for steering as she climbed aboard the carpet, sitting in the center and crossing her legs just as the professor had said to. She was super nervous, but she'd rode on a broom before, so she was no stranger to being in the air.

Maddie squeezed her eyes shut, realizing once she was on the carpet that she was kind of scared to continue. Slowly, she reached toward the part she was supposed to hang on to and leaned forward. "AHHHHH!" she said, releasing a scream as the carpet shot forward. She pulled back on it, and it came to a stop. She was pretty sure she wasn't supposed to be riding like that, but oh well. She leaned forward a LOT slower this time and began to coast forward. Yeah...this was a good speed. She liked sloooooow.

Haraldur watched the first year take off in racing speed and he was just about to remind her how to slow down when she stopped the carpet mid-air. It then gliiiided forward in a much more controlled manner. The instructor puffed his chest, clasping his hands behind his back as he paced towards her. ”Nicely handled, miss Kemp.” He mused.

”Nicely done, miss Holden!” Haraldur called as she picked up a pair of sunglasses from the pitch. He wasn’t looking when she returned to talk to Tenacius. A scream from Emmeline had his full attention. He only glanced over his shoulder when Olivia yelled, marching over to his broom by the tent.

She'd started tuning out at allll of the talk about the safety charms, blah blah blah. It wasn't Professor B.'s fault, 'cause normally his talking was actually way easier to listen to than most of the other professors' -- it was just that all that safety and procedural stuff couldn't hold the twelve-year-old's attention no matter who was talking about it, mhm. She had managed to hear bits and pieces of the talking, though, and she'd paid attention to the cleaning and racing parts of the instructions 'cause duh, that was the fun part!

Emmeline was already sitting cross-legged on her flying carpet, but she was sitting near the top of it from an owl's point of view. Sooo the second year wriggled her butt a bit and scooted back until she thought she was pretty close to being in the middle of the carpet.

Okay, time to FLY!!! Emmeline leaned forward as faaaaar as she could without moving her butt again -- and the carpet SHOT forward. Oooops! Thankfully, she wasn't really on a collision course with anyone; her carpet just shot forward a few feet over all of the random stuff on the pitch. Still, Emmeline leaned backward confidently to STOP her carpet, but it just started going up.... And up... And up....

Until she felt some sort of magic take hold -- must've been the height charm thingy -- and it felt like she was just kind of stuck at her current height. But her carpet was still going forward and she didn't want to; she'd already drifted too far away from the professor and the rest of the class to call out a question (how to STOP??) sooo Emmeline settled for the best remedy she could think of; she SCREAMED, "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

That would get Professor B.'s attention before she smacked into the wall on the other side of the pitch, right?

Haraldur’s attention was no longer on Olivia and Tenacius but on a figure getting smaller and smaller, zooming away across the pitch. He squinted his eyes and began marching towards his broom, leaned up against the tent. ”Pull on the edges, miss Sparkes!” He called as a reminder when he grabbed his broom.

"After class then," he winked to his Gryffindor just as the Groundskeeper began dishing out further instructions on how to handle their carpets.

Blah blah blah blah could they just get flying now pleeeeaaaaase?

OH THERE WAS THE SIGNAL! "See you on the other side!" he grinned at Abey, flopping down on his carpet. Since, you know, he had to wait a bit more before he and Abey could do the whole surfing thing. He then pulled his legs in crisscross applesauce before leaning forward and pulling up on his carpet to rise up into the air. Wind RUSHING through his messy blonde hair, the Hufflepuff had to admit that he was enjoying this.

But brooms were still better. It FELT more like flying. Legs dangling in the air and all that. This was...kinda weird. A good weird...but weird.

Leaning forward some more, Derf's carpet began to pick up speed as he zoomed towards the first item when he heard a scream. "EMMELINE!" he shouted, leaning to the right to make a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide U-turn and then another one so he came up along side his friend and her carpet. "PULL ON THE EDGES...BUT DON'T LEAN BACK!" he instructed as he coasted along side her.

He hadn't seen exactly what had happened...but she was clearly in a panic and the best thing she could do was stop.

She was actually flying around at a decent pace, never mind the fact that she was more worried about helping Emmeline than collecting a random item and trying to return it.

...Or maybe she should pay more attention to the wall that her carpet seemed to be headed riiiiight for.

Having grabbed his broom, Haraldur swung one leg across and kicked off the ground to follow Emmeline. There wasn't any real danger, seeing how miss Purcell had kept the anti-roll charm and the sticking charm on the carpets. As usual, the same old cushioning charms were placed on the walls of the stands. When he caught up with the students, the girl had managed to pull the carpet to a complete stop.

Haraldur flew up next to Emmeline, Derfael and Maddie who had set off after her. "Are you OK, miss Sparkes?" He asked as he flew in a circle to hover right in front of the trio. "Miss Kemp, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne, take 3 points each to your houses for showing great sportsmanship and helping out a classmate in need. That's exactly the type of behaviour I want from my students. Now, return to the rest of the group and finish the assignment. And please... Remember the steering instructions."

Haraldur turned his gaze to Emmeline as soon as her friends had left them. He sighed. "Forgetting how to steer or how to stop is easily done when you're having fun or, getting scared." He began, not letting her break eye contact. "Which is why it's extremely important to listen to the instructions provided before you take off. You're here to learn, Miss Sparkes, and of course, flying is completely safe here at Hogwarts. Still, you need to be completely understood with the instructions before you start flying. Is that understood?" He hovered closer to her and pointed towards the edges of the carpet. "If you lean back while you pull the edges, you go higher up. To go down again, you pull on the edges while you lean forward. To stop or slow down, you simply pull on the edges while keeping your body completely still." He leaned his body slightly to the right to get his broom to hover out of her way. "Now," He smiled. "Give it a go again and rejoin your classmates."

Success!

After the ‘little situation’ with Emmeline was done with, the flying instructor returned just in time to see Tenacius up on the carpet again. This time however, he managed to pick up an object. Haraldur didn’t demount his broom this time, but stayed hovering in the air. ”See how well it works once you’ve gotten to know the carpet, Mr. Salander? Well done, well done.” He mused, eyes drifting across the group.

He turned to his professor, "Thanks! I figure these guys don't get enough credit for what they do." He stepped onto the carpet and settled into the center of the carpet. As he went to cross his ankles his childhood teacher's voice came into his head causing him to smile, "crisscross applesauce" he mumbled before grabbing the corners of the carpet.

He figured now was as good of time as any to try and learn how to fly the carpet. He couldn't believe as a first year he was getting the experience to learn to fly a carpet. He leaned forward and immediately jerked backwards nearly tumbling. "Too much," brushing his hair off his forehead he sat tall again, and slightly leaned forward. Slow and steady to start, the speed would come with knowing his carpet better. He went around the pitch trying to find an object to bring back to the other side.

Zigging and Zagging through the pitch he spotted a Gryffindor sweater, "score!" How could one person lose a sweater and not realize it was missing. He leaned forward a bit more trying to get a faster speed. The carpet shook a little from side to side, getting a bit nervous Patrick pulled back a bit, but still zoomed across the pitch. Picking up the sweater he turned back toward the starting point, wondering if they were going to keep the items that they found.

Looking around, after flying back across the pitch, he was searching for a partner to race across the pitch with, it was never fun to race alone. That was like sprinting alone, blech, he didn't like that.

"That's alright, Professor. I've already got my sweater and a warming charm in place." She said, reaching for the coat he'd deposited by her anyway. With her own measures taken before leaving the castle, there really wasn't much need for it so the Ravenclaw simply placed the coat in her lap and went on watching her classmates.

They looked like they were having a world of fun, but in the moment it didn't look much fun to her. All Jessa could see was a headache in the making and she wanted no part in that. On any other day, she would definitely feel as if she was missing out but not right now, right now all she felt she was missing out on was a long nap and maybe a potion or two.

Didn't take much longer for her to come to the conclusion she could no longer watch. It had nothing to do with the level of fun her classmates were having but rather...all the zig zagging and zooming and zipping was starting to make her head spin in the worst sort of way.

The Fourth Year rested her face in her hands, her head hung down toward the grass. If she wasn't feeling out of it before, she definitely was now. There was entirely too much movement going on around her.

Her face had gone waaayyy past tomato color and now probably looked more like a small Quaffle. Emmeline was super embarrassed 'cause Professor B. had not only noticed and had to fly allll the way over here for no reason, but he'd also totally noticed that she hadn't paid attention to all of his talking. The twelve-year-old had managed to smile and wave at Derf and Maddie before they left to go rejoin the group, but the smile had fallen off faster than Stinksap as soon as they'd gone. She nodded all seriously when Professor B. was done with his instructions (again) and answered softly, "Yes, sir. I'm sorry, sir... I guess I was too excited about flying these." Which was totally true, and now that her carpet had listened to her and stuff, she was super happy that she'd get to fly it again. 'Cept it seemed like she added another professor to the growing list of teachers who were mad at her, and that was kind of sad. Especially since she actually liked Professor B.

Well, she liked most of her teachers, really, but Professor B. was kind of cool, you know? Emmeline didn't waste any time in pulling the corners of her flying carpet up again and leaning forward this time to go down to a better height for grabbing stuff. She leaned to the left until she'd made a kind of circle and was soon coasting back down the pitch to where the rest of her classmates were still assembled.

As she got closer and closer to the pile of stuff all over the pitch, Emmeline leaned forward a bit more and streeeetched out her arm to grab something. She came up with a plain, pointed hat and grinned in silent triumph; these carpets totally weren't so bad after all! Once she'd brought the hat back in, the second year pulled back on the corners and sat veeeery still to stop her carpet. Grinning around at her classmates, she asked: "Anyone wanna race?" 'Cause that was part of the activity too, right?

Okay so Tenacius was okay. Vi sighed, nodding her head, feeling a little relieved by it all. He seemed more embarrassed by it all so she glanced one more time before turning over to see Emmeline regaining control of her carpet. Oh. THANK. GOODNESS. MERLIN. She sighed a sigh of relief and felt the heavy tension that was building up in the front of her head began to dissipate.

And then Emmeline was offering to race someone. "I'm game if you are!" she said with a playful smile. She was down to race.

Steer the carpet. Bloody Nora, she'd only just managed to get it off the ground and she was expected to steer it?! Clambering on - and taking a few tried to even do that correctly - Felicity crossed her legs and rearranged her skirt , trying to find a comfortable balance on the carpet.

Now, what did she have to do? Gosh, so many things to remember.

She leaned forward slightly, before jolting upright and a little too far back. The speed with which the carpet had gone forward had shocked her, and now she was going backwards at an almost alarming rate! She righted herself and pulled the corners of the front of the carpet towards her. She didn't like it.

Nope. Could she have a go on a broom now?

Henry could almost forgive Mr B for the lack of brooms and what initially appeared to be a purely theoretical lesson now that they were going to get to race on flying carpets. Sure, they weren't brooms, but they were pretty cool in their own right. And how often did he get the chance to fly a magic carpet? That's right, not very often.

He had been on one before, but it had been a long time and he wasn't nearly as skilled with flying one as he was with a broom. It took him a full lap from one end of the pitch to the other to get at least relatively used to it enough to feel fairly confident that he could race with it.

Hearing a couple of the girls express interest in racing, he steered over towards them, trying to make sure he didn't bump into them on his way. "You can race me too, if you want!" He was totally down for that. "Let's go!" And without waiting another beat, he leaned forward, taking off on his flying carpet.

So Emmeline was safe now, and even though Maddie was sure she hadn't been a huge help, she'd at least tried. The older girl was SUPER COOL, and she was one of the first people Maddie had hung out with when on an adventure around the grounds. Race or no race, Maddie felt good about helping out. PLUS, she'd even won three whole extra points, which were her very first points to earn that weren't the result of just participation in class. "Thanks, Professor," she said. "Glad you're okay, Emmeline!"

Maddie steered her carpet around in the other direction. She still had to somehow make it to the other end of the pitch and collect one of those random items. She seriously doubted she'd be FIRST to do that, but if she could at least make it there without falling off her carpet...or worse, she thought she'd have succeeded. She was just about to take Emmeline up on her offer to race, when another girl beat her to it. Was Derf still around? He'd be fun to race, too!

"Hey, Derf! I'm not good on this thing at all, so I doubt I give you much of a challenge, but...you wanna race?" she asked.

Patrick stayed afloat on his carpet and watched as Olivia, a girl he had met in the court yard was getting ready to race a girl he hadn't met before. He thought about joining in with them but then decided he would watch a round to see how it would go before he attempted to race across the pitch himself. If there was one thing he did well it was watching and learning. Listening to long winded lectures, now that was something he wasn't good at.

"Anyone need a racing partner?" Speaking louder than he normally did, Patrick waited a few seconds to see if anyone would be coming over to race with him or invite him over to join them to race.

Carter was a little disappointed to be witnessing a lesson not involving brooms. So much for potentially scouting today. But, carpets were related to flying. So, yes. It was relevant. He looked over his clipboard again. Relevant to the subject was a question on there, right?

He scribbled a few notes before walking along the edge of the pitch. He observed the students doing the activity. He was particularly interested in seeing how the professor handled any... accidents. High speeds, especially on things that students aren't familiar with, could result in injury. In fact, would most likely lead to injury. He guessed most of the kids had never even seen a magic carpet before today.

As he walked, he looked between the students and the Professor. He tried to remain within earshot to be able to hear what he was saying at all times.
But he couldn't help but be curious of the carpets in action. He, himself, didn't know a lot about them.

Bucket in hand, Tenacius zoomed for the area where they drop off their collected items, and in one smooth loop he was making his way back towards the practice area. The Curly Top turned his head at the sound of his name-- oh hey that look of approval or the Professor B. Indeed he's so proud in finally getting a grip (literally) of this new carpet. Big smiles and an exuberant thumbs up for you Sir!

But as always what is the most fun thing for something that flies? Why testing how fast it would go of course! At least thats how it is for this Speed Devil. The leonine lad felt something swoop by him and he turned to see the Head Boy calling for a race. "You're on Henry!" he laughed as he leaned in and zoomed after his Hufflebud.

Remember to focus? UH YES PROFESSOR B!? That's what she was trying to do and now she had to start all over again with her concentrating and meditating. Keeping very still, cross-legged in the center, Skylar just found her center of balance, breathing in, breathing out. Not too bad when it came to just hovering in the air, but as any quidditch player would know, you didn't get far or win a match from just hovering.

Leaning back slightly, she grinned when she found the carpet tilting upward. And now to propel forward, a lean forward and she was in motion! Success! Hearing fellow classmates talking about racing, Skylar was confused, because she thought that was the whole mission of the activity was to race to one end of the pitch and back? Had everyone forgotten that or was she simply so far behind that they they had already been to the end back and now were just goofing around? Shrugging, she was focused on her own ride instead. Forward, forward, and a lean to the left and a lean forward to go a little faster, which sadly wasn't fast enough for the young quidditch player. Pity.

But then finally, she made it and she reached her hand to pull the rug corners up toward her and then the rug stopped! Reaching out, Skylar touched the wall and now time to turn around and head back... could she just shift around in her seat carefully? Biting her lip nervously, the fifth year scooted around until she was facing the former back. And then carefully leaned her body forward and just like that, she was off! And back to where she began!

So that was the whole activity, yes? Now she could just flying around whichever way she chose?

He was TOTALLY going to catch up with Abey in just a bit...once he had made sure that Emmeline was doing alright and stuff. Which it seemed she WAS now and Derf pulled up on the edges of his carpet too to come to a stop beside her. "Welcome," he grinned at her SANS any hair ruffling at the moment. It was then that he also noticed Maddie who had also come up along side the second year and he offered his fellow blonde Hufflepuff a grin as well - and an accompanying thumbs up of approval.

But before he could really address Emmeline's question...the groundskeeper and arrived to hand out points to himself and Maddie. Which was, you know, fine and all...but he was kinda more concerned with making sure his friend was actually listening this time. "You got all that?" he asked her, not realyl forgetting his manners to say thank you but more he had tunnel vision going on.

Which, well, every thing seemed alright so that meant he was free to go back and catch up with Ab----

"Oh, hey Maddie," he grinned again at the blonde before shaking his head. "You are plenty fine on that carpet. My first time riding one too, you know." Although he did like to think he had a natural knack for flying. And falling. Sometimes one following the other. "Sure! On the count of three, yeah? 1...2..." He paused for dramatic effect. "3!"

And then the third year was leaning forward and zooooooming forward with the wind rushing through his unkempt blonde hair.

a bit of madness is key | miss chanandler bong | those cunning folks use any means

Haraldur, now on his broom, watched the kids fly around, testing and finally mastering the carpets. He glanced up at the sky, noticing the afternoon was slowly providing less and less light. It was time to wrap up the lesson.

He grabbed the horn that hung around his neck and blew in it to catch the students' attention. "All right everyone, gather 'round, gather 'round." He called, lowering his broom until his shoes touched the ground.

When the students had touched back down, he clasped his hands over his chest again. "Well done, everyone. Today you've had your first lesson in mastering the flying carpets. I want you to remember the laws and regulations surrounding them and until next time, discuss amongst yourselves how the flying carpets could be a smarter alternative for transportation methods, besides flying."

"Now, before you leave, please put the carpet back inside the tent. If you want to stick around for a while, you may do so. I'll be cleaning up the rest of the pitch. Class dismissed!"

OOC: *heart eyes* That's it for now, folks! Thank you so much for showing up and participating. Hope you had funnnn!

I will keep this thread open for another 12 hours if you want to catch up or post your character leaving.

lol - lots of love (yes?)
