Default Joint Lesson: Flying + Potions

The weather is brisk as you head down to the pitch, autumn firmly taking hold with the leaves on the trees starting to turn coppery hues. The sky might be clear and the sun out, but there’s definitely still a chill in the air. At least the dew on the grass present when you arrived for this morning’s SORE exercises has cleared, so there’d be no need for soggy bottoms when you eventually sit down.

Under the hoops at one end of the pitch stand Professors Baldvinsson and Noble, chatting about the latest Quidditch results. Lines of mason jars containing bluebell flames radiate out from them, forming several concentric semi-circles. “Find yourself a jar,” Noble instructs, “And put your cauldron on it ready.” They had remembered their cauldrons, yes?

Text Cut: Lesson progression:

OOC: Remember to have a look at the Flying and Potions rules before posting.

Class will begin in ~ 24 hours. Class has officially started. You can jump in at any time, as if you've been there all along... Or not.

'Points don't really matter' was something he was going to have to remember. Maybe that was the lesson of the day, with this healing and bandages part just being the side lesson. Zoryn DID say this was an initiation, after all.

Level tablespoons? It was a good thing that Noble had decided to show them exactly what he meant because Lucas didn't know. He leant forwards and squinted a little to get a proper look at the demonstration and then..... decided to follow. Three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves. What comfrey leaves were, he didn't know. Hadn't even SEEN them before. And here he was, checking that the tablespoons he was scooping out of the leaves were level before dumping them into his cauldron. Stirring was much easier, thankfully.

One.... two...... three! In the clockwise direction. See? Simple.

He smiled when he saw the lilac colour of the potion, feeling something fill up inside of him. He didn't really know what it was but he felt a little bit better than before. And as though he COULD do this. Maybe.

But there was no time to think between all of this because they were already moving on with the potion. White willow leaves? Okay. He.... wasn't going to question the colour choice but he did have some questions about it. Taking one of the willow leaves, he crushed it between his fingers and then dropped it into the cauldron. This was then followed up by an anticlockwise stir. Another one was picked up and crushed before being dropped into the cauldron and a stir anticlockwise. And another..... and another....... and another.

Could they have a break? He felt like he needed it. They weren't difficult instructions to follow but he did feel like it was doing his head in.

But according to the instructions, the break he wanted was coming up so maybe he should go ahead and THEN relax. With this in mind, Lucas picked up a piece of the willow bark, silently hoping it was one inch and not something else, and added it into his cauldron. There. Now he could just sit back and wait. And eight minutes wasn't a long time, was it?

The Gryffindor relaxed and looked around near him. Could he..... take a nap? Right here? He didn't feel like it, really, but a nap would be great. Let his head relax. But then again, as he reached down and patted the grass, he realised that it wasn't a good place to take a nap. You know what was a good place to nap? That big armchair in the Gryffindor common room near the fireplace. It was perfect and squishy and-

Oh. How long has it been?

Five minutes and twenty seconds, according to his watch.

He sighed. This was boring. Really boring. He'd much rather be wrapping bandages than sitting here waiting for the potion to simmer. Which, he looked into and saw that the colours were changing (?) but it wasn't that thick yellow paste that Noble was talking about so he'd have to do some more waiting. He was counting down the time but that wasn't enough to keep him occupied so, he decided to look around to see what everyone else was doing. Some people had already finished - how?! - and some were doing the waiting game as well, which was nice to see.

When the eight minutes were up, Lucas looked into his potion and smiled at the yellow colour he saw in there. Which wasn't bad, right? He scooped up a sample in a vial and labelled it with his name and year and house as neatly as he could.

Quote:
Name: Lucas Dakest
House: Gryffindor

There. He got up and went to the front to give it in. What was he going to do with the rest? He already had a plan: Emma was a Quidditch player and she might get bruised some time so he was keeping this for her. Just in case.

Oh, had he seen that? Heh. Natalie flushed a bit out of embarrassment when Professor Noble called her out on her "roughly" three minutes because she hadn't set a timer. Oops. Hopefully it wouldn't make a difference.

Watching her cauldron innocently as passed by, Natalie waited for further instruction.

Okay. Three level tablespoons of of dried comfrey leaves. Stir three times clockwise. Should be lilac in color. Natalie wrote that down in her notebook and then continued to listen. Five white willow leaves. Crush and drop into cauldron one by one. Stir counterclockwise between each one. Okay. Next. Add one inch of willow bark. Simmer until thick yellow paste. Approximately 8 minutes.

Natalie set down her pen and took a deep breath and then got right to work. Dried comfrey leaves were first, so she scooped her little tablespoon into the dish of dried leaves and made sure they were leveled out each time before dumping three of them in. Done. Natalie then stirred her cauldron three times clockwise. Then she stopped. Now it was time for the willow leaves, one at a time. Natalie picked up one and crushed it in her fingers before dropping it into the cauldron and stirring once counterclockwise. Then she repeated that step four more times.

Dusting off her hands on her pants, Natalie looked at her next instruction. So far so good.

The last step was to add one inch of willow bark, so Natalie made sure her chunk was the right size and she plopped it right into the pot. She watched it sink into the goop and then let it simmer. She was supposed to let it simmer for approximately 8 minutes, but this time she set a timer so she would at least have a good idea of when it was to be finished.

And then... she waited.

Nettie turned her attention back to Noble as he started to go over the next steps. This potion was turning out to be surprisingly easy, compared to the ones they had to brew last term. She took the dried comfrey leaves and took her measuring spoon, measuring out her tablespoons and making sure it was leveled off before adding each one. One, two, three tablespoons. Done.

She then took her stirrer and stirred the potion three times clockwise. The potion started to lighten until...it was a nice shade of lilac. Well, it looked purple to her, but she assumed it was lilac. It was like...light purple-ish. She then took the willow leaves one by one and crushed each one between her tiny fingers, dropping the first one in and then stopping to stir it once counter clockwise. She repeated this until she had added all five of her leaves. Once she had added her last one, and stirred the potion one last time counter clockwise, she picked up the willow bark and dropped it in.

Now she had to wait 10 minutes. SIGH. Her least favorite part of ANY potion. So she sat back and looked around, nosily looking at the other potions to see where everyone was at. Everyone looked sort of like how hers look - that was a good sign right?

Finally, 10 minutes had passed and her potion was DONE. She took a clear vial and took her spoon to pour the potion in. Yes, it had definitely gotten thicker, and now it was yellow. It really DID look like the bruise paste they had at home in their medicine cabinet!

She pulled out her label and scribbled her name on it before turning it in to the professor.

Natasha listened carefully, scribbling down notes to be sure to get the directions right, while also watching the demonstration. She added the three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves, counting carefully to only stir three times, and making sure she was stirring clockwise. Everything looked good so far! She moved on to crushing the willow leaves and dropping them into the potion. She stirred anticlockwise between each leaf, but didn't catch how many times to stir between them, so she only made one round. Still no disaster, so it couldn't be that bad, right? After adding the willow bark, she let the potion simmer for the ten minutes as instructed. After the ten minutes, it was fairly thick, and yellow, but she didn't really think it was a thick as it was supposed to be. She still filled a vial and labeled it:

Arnica root? Arnica root.

Abra heard the murmur from Baldvinsson, blinked, and quickly nodded his appreciation. "Thanks, sir." He was just about to start randomly packing a cup full of the stuff when - perhaps luckily, because he was really just about to WING IT and put any old amount in, just to be doing something - Noble's answer came.

As he looked up from what he was doing, Abra's relief at being told he could indeed consult the book was short-lived when he saw the frown on Noble's face. Frowns were not good. Since when had a frown ever been good?

And then he froze slightly, not entirely sure whether what Noble was saying was a suggestion or an instruction. Sometimes people disguised one as the other, you know? So it was difficult to tell exactly what he was expected to do. After a long few moments of hesitation, Abra decided to err on the side of caution, even if it meant moving closer to a professor that made him so nervous and even though he didn't know how being closer to the front would help him keep up at all. He couldn't help but notice, too, that the free jar that was pointed out to him was still far away from Derf.

Hoisting up his cauldron of water, his bag, and his potions kit, Abra quickly relocated to the space Noble pointed out to him, extracted his book from his bag, and looked up the potion. It was... easier said than done, really, and in his suddenly heightened anxiety, Abra found that even reading through the table of contents was difficult. Eventually he found the page he needed, and squinted down at the recipe.

Half a cup of arnica root. Okay. Right. He could do that. Maybe. Sort of. He was kind of now definitely in a rush to keep up, and feeling more frenzied than he would have liked, so Abra settled for haphazardly shoving arnica root into a cup. When it looked more or less halfway full, and perhaps not as well-packed as it needed to be, he added it to the cauldron. Waiting three minutes was not, however, something he could rush, so Abra had to settle for setting his timer, roughly plucking the petals from three dandelions so that he was ready, and waiting.

The second the timer was up, the petals were dropped unceremoniously into the potion. Because he'd had the time to spare, Abra had been able to take a little extra time to go over the next step in his book a few times to make absolutely sure he was getting it right, so the only part that really delayed him next was locating the container of dried comfrey leaves in his potions kit; why did they all have to be labelled in cursive?

When he'd found what he certainly hoped was the right ingredient (there was only so much that squinting at the label could accomplish), Abra measured out three level tablespoons, added them to the potion, and stirred three times clockwise. And then...

....... he stared at it. He... couldn't say for certain that it looked lilac. But was that because he'd been a bit less than precise with his ingredients, or because his eyes saw the colour differently, or because he'd potentially picked up the wrong ingredient? Also, considering the fact that it was eventually meant to turn into a paste, it looked VERY watery. But, as for the colour, it was definitely on the purplish side, so... he was just... going to continue.

Consulting the book again, because he was sort of lagging behind and remembering the verbal instructions was still nigh on impossible, Abra next reached for the willow bark. He was, of course, supposed to have picked up the willow leaves, but he was still flustered and anxious and his brain was extra likely to mix up words and ingredients - especially when they were written so closely together and both had the word 'willow' in them. The instruction to crush the ingredient lightly between his fingers probably should have made him think twice, but logical thinking was not coming so easily to him right now.

Now very far behind where he should have been in his potion, Abra made a valiant attempt at crushing the willow bark between his fingers, squeezing it with all his might before it finally shot out of his grip and landed with a 'kerplunk' in the liquid in his cauldron, which instantly congealed and started giving off huge plumes of very thick, yellow, unpleasant smelling smoke.

"UhhhHHHHHHH."

Maybe this was his chance. He could disappear under cover of the smoke and make a mad dash for the castle, and nobody (read: everybody) would be any the wiser.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Yeeeep, he was still very much following Natalie. There was no backing out now anyway. When she started writing down notes, he READ over them carefully - not all that ashamed to be taking help from her, even if he had not really asked for her permission to do so.

Because they were friends, right? Or so he had assumed, because they had hung out and seen each other around school more than enough already.

Back to the potion, however. Taking a look at her notes, and recalling what the professor had done - Zachary added three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves and stirred it three times counter?no no, clockwise. He then stared as the point turned faint lilac ---- and then became not so faint anymore.

Hmm.

Moving on.

Taking five white willow leaves, he crushed them between his fingers before dropping them one by one into the potion, and in between somehow quickly stirred the entire thing anti-clockwise.

Was it done? He quickly glanced at Nat's notes, and frowned. "This is too much work" he added to her, before reaching for a willow bark. Dropping it in, he checked his watch - before letting the potion simmer.

Eight minutes in, he watched as it started to become into a yellowish paste - even if not entirely like how the professor had turned out. he figured it would do. He still waited for another two-three minutes before transferring it into a vial.

Labeling it with his name, and year - he got it to the front before returning to his cauldron.

Text Cut: instructions

Ingredients
1 cup water
½ cup Arnica root
Petals of 3 dandelion heads
3 tbsp dried comfrey leaves
5 white willow (Salix alba) leaves
1 inch piece of willow bark

Recipe
1. Add the water and arnica root to the cauldron, and let seep for 3 minutes.
2. Sprinkle in the petals of 3 dandelion heads
3. Add three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves and stir three times clockwise. At this point, the potion should turn a faint lilac.
4. Crush the willow leaves between your fingers and drop in the potion one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each.
5. Add the willow bark.
6. Simmer for 10 minutes until the potion resembles a thick, yellow paste.

Patrick had let the potion steep the requisite three ministers before he added the dandelion petals. He had looked up immediately at Nobel when he began to move along. He was feeling pretty darn good about this potion.

Now it was time for the three spoonfuls. The way Nobel showed them to measure was just like how his mamas taught him to level flour. This should be easy. He filled one spoonful and leveled. Dropping it I to the potion he quickly filled the spoon again. ”See it’s easy kid.” he mumbled under his breath as he dropped the second spoonful into the cauldron followed by the third. WAs the stirring supposed to be clockwise or counter? Glancing at his notes he saw clockwise underlined so he began the three spins in the cauldron.

With the willow leaf inbetween his right index finger and thumb he pressed a bit like he would a mint leaf and dropped it into the cauldron. While stirring counterclockwise once he picked up the second leaf from his station. “Two, counterclockwise. Three, counterclockwise. Four, backwards. Five, backwards.” he counted each petal because he didn’t want to do it wrong. After adding the one inch piece of bark he had cut he had time to wait.

His mind wandered and he began to wonder what if he had crushed the leaves too much... on goodness would that make the potion different. He still had five minutes to find out but he wanted to know what would happen. Instead of asking immediately to make it sound like he hadn’t done it right he kept a silent eye on his potion for the remaining five minutes of the time seeing his potion began to look yellow which made him release the unknown breath he was holding.

Upon labeling his potion with his name, year, and house he gave it to professor Nobel. But not before asking the question about the crushed leaves. “Professor Nobel, what would happen in the event that someone crushed their leaves too much? How differently would that change the potion?” while Nobel was scary last year this year Patrick just knew he was gruff and wanted to learn everything he could from the man.

He was watching as she got points taken, "Well good that I can have my leg back but stinks you lost a few points for a laugh." he muttered under his breath at Anna.

Turning his attention back toward the professors he heard he should be stretching. Now though he needed to get his potion going. He was enjoying all of these classes with the old professors. Most of them cared deeply about the students unlike his other courses with the cold professionals from the board.

"You have a cauldron near by?"
he asked Anna as he began to add a cup of water to his cauldron as well as the arnica root. He pressed the arnica root into the measuring tool one more time before adding it to the cauldron. Now he had three minutes to wait. What was he supposed to do for three minutes before he had to add those dang dandelion petals.
+ both adults

Anna was half amused, half annoyed at Mr Baldvinsson's deducting point for her having done exactly what he had done before. Both emotions expressed all over her face as she sent a look at Patrick, shaking her head and letting out a scoff. "This term... honestly." She whispered, shaking her head again and letting the boy's leg back down. The adults were losing it. LOSING. IT. Which still made Anna half amused, half annoyed. She'd try and focused on the amused bit for now, but couldn't help roll her eyes.

As she listened, she wasn't surprised to see more students losing points and it took a lot of effort from her not to roll her eyes again. The Gryffindor rubbed her face and would leave her Slytherin friend to deal with his leg bandages as she waited for further instructions because she was already over this lesson, honestly. And they hadn't even gotten to the brewing-a-Potion part of it yet. Merlin help her.

Taking a seat by the bluebell flame and cauldron next to Patrick's, she pointed at the object in front of her. "This is mine." She sent him an amused smile because yep, her cauldron was nearby. She copied her classmate and added the water and arnica root and looked around as she also waited for the three minutes to pass.

It was only when Patrick added the next set of ingredients that Anna did as well. In the dandelion petals went after what she thought were three minutes - otherwise why would Patrick have added them then, yes? Yes, she was counting on him being right. In fact, her entire Potion-making would be dependent on him doing things right that day, to be honest.

Anna also added one spoonful of dried comfrey leaves at a time. 'See it’s easy kid.' Anna turned her head when the boy said that, stopping mid-spoonful and gave him a funny look, assuming he was speaking to her. "Thanks?" She said before chuckling, amused. "We're the same age, though." The girl added, juuust so he knew. Lol. Cheeky boy!

That made her lose count of how many spoonfuls of dried comfrey leaves she had added. Welp. Great. But no problem, she'd go with the flow as usual. Adding another spoonful just in case she hadn't put enough - who knew? - she moved on to the next step. That, of course, meant looking at what Patrick was doing and copying him. Three stirs clockwise. Aaaalright.

Her Potion now had turned... pinky. Hmm... okay? Anna looked around to see if hers was similar to what her classmates' Potions looked like, and she guessed it was close enough.

Looking over at what Patrick was doing, she watched him for a few seconds and had to stifle a chuckle. He looked SO into this Potion-making thing, it was kind of funny. Cute, even. She gave her own white willow leaves a funny look before collecting them and... mimicking what Patrick had done, amusement written all over her face as she had to bite her lower lip to stop herself from chuckling. One leaf... stir. Two leaves... stir. Three... stir... four and five.... stir.

...

Close enough.

Wait, had she stirred the right way!? Oh well. Who cared anymore? Not Anna.

Merlin, what a fuss.

The fourth year quickly added the last ingredient just after Patrick did, just so she wouldn't forget because that was likely to happen if she left it too long.

Now what? Oh, right. Waiting again. Merlin. Booriiiing.

She tried to entertain herself by looking around to see what was happening, but boredom all around was what was happening. She looked back at Patrick and had to stifle a laugh as he stared into his Potion. Rubbing her face again, she shook her head and chuckled. "Aw, Merlin..." Amused, she was.

Anna didn't wait until her Potion was done to label it. She hadn't gotten her hopes too high regarding the outcome of this, even though she had tried to follow what Patrick was doing to a T okay, she hadn't tried it that hard, but still.

The Gryffindor did chuckle in the end, when she heard the Slytherin's question. She gave him yet another amused smile.

What a nerd!

His potion wasn’t lilac but rather than start from scratch, Max decided to just carry on. Maybe if he got the rest of the method down PERFECT, everything would be okay in the end. It was worth a shot. The last thing he wanted was Professor Noble breathing down his neck so he definitely wasn’t going to ask for assistance.

Chewing on his lip in concentration, Max worked on the next step. Crushing willow leaves seemed simple enough. He pinched each leaf between his thumb and forefinger, crushing them into a dust and letting that dust fall into his cauldron. He didn’t forget to do the stirring between each one. This time anti-clockwise according to the method.

Next, he measured a piece of one inch willow bark and plopped that into the mixture.

Now to wait.

This time, he made sure to set the timer rather than keep an eye on his watch.

And while that was simmering, he peered around at the potions his classmates had managed to concoct. He needed to find out who had done best because there was a chance he’d need to borrow a vial to present to Noble. Hmmmm, Juni's looked pretty good.

Eight minutes in, he watched as it started to become into a yellowish paste - even if not entirely like how the professor had turned out. he figured it would do. He still waited for another two-three minutes before transferring it into a vial.

Labeling it with his name, and year - he got it to the front before returning to his cauldron.
Natalie had actually been rather the focused the whole time, her eyes on her POTION rather than the boy beside her who was apparently, blatantly cheating by using her notes instead of writing his own. She would have stopped him, but truly... she didn't notice.

Until he said it was too much work. She then looked over, seeing his eyes move from HER notes to his willow bark, then seeing that he had no notes of her own at his work station. Too much work. Natalie scoffed. At least her potion looked better than his.

Then she was carefully pouring some of her potion into a vial, just as Zac was doing. "You should put my name on that, you know," she said, watching him write his name on the vial of potion that he made from HER notes. "Unless you're really good enough to make a potion without taking any notes." Which she didn't THINK so.

Nose up, Natalie walked her vial up to the front and then went back to her station to bottle up the rest of the paste. She was sort of clumsy sometimes, so she could probably use it eventually.

Potions and Flying… What a combo, right? Two of his worst subjects put together… He imagined having to try to brew a potion where you had to swoop in on your broom for each ingredient. That sounded way too dangerous for either professor to even consider, but man did the thought make Jackson anxious. He picked up a broom from the shed and gathered with his classmates. “Good morning, Professor Noble. Good morning, Professor Baldvinsson.” He could feel a bit of adrenaline rushing at him, and he realized that it was because he was now more used to coming out here for morning runs than he was for class. Not that he didn’t already get anxious when he had to fly, since he wasn’t very good at it. Finally class was ready to begin, and Jackson stifled a yawn. He meant no offense, Professors! When SORE was mentioned, Jackson had to hold back a chuckle. It was no wonder that most professors had still not come around to the activity. It didn’t really bother Jackson, if he was being honest. He sat, nodding slightly as the dangers of flying were mentioned. Jackson flying was in fact a danger. CAUTION.

Home remedies? Hearing the last instruction caused Jackson to make a slightly shocked face. Just… different. He stopped himself, as he had been about to speak, and raised his hand instead. “I used to play a lot of uh, well, Muggle sports, so I have a lot of experience with injuries. I’ve had a concussion, which is basically bruising your brain, and to treat that… well, my mum told me to just stay awake and practice logic puzzles. When I tore my ham string, I did a lot of exercises in the water to increase my endurance and whatnot. I’ve also used a lot of pain medicine, Neosporin…” Did those count as home remedies?

As they moved on, Professor Noble’s part in things became clearer. It was time for them to get started on the potion. Jackson definitely had to agree that these were good things to have in his repertoire. He added the water and arnica root. The root was definitely what he would call ‘well-packed’ (read: it needed some help getting from the cup to the cauldron). He started timing himself and got the flowers ready, twirling the dandelions until it was time to add them.

Quote:
Ingredients

6. Simmer for 10 minutes until the potion resembles a thick, yellow paste.to add the petals.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

With his own cauldron simmering, now was a good time to check how the students were getting on. And he couldn’t help but sigh as his gaze reached Bettie’s cauldron. The first year had made a glaring omission from her potion right at the start. “Check your ingredients list again,” Noble said, a distinct tone of disappointment in his voice. “Your potion seems to have a distinct lack of arnica root in it.” It was honestly a miracle it had still turned a yellow colour. Unfortunately, without a key active ingredient it wouldn’t be doing a whole ton for any bruises. “Precision is key in my classes. I expect your full attention next time.”

His hands resting behind his back, Noble next moved so he could see Madison’s efforts. “Decent work, Madison,” he commented with a nod. She could perhaps do with a little more patience waiting between steps, but her results seemed promising. As did her work ethic. Cleaning up without being asked? More students needed to learn that skill.

Another student with a promising work ethic? Hanna. The young Ravenclaw could have perhaps done with resting her parchment on her textbook to write her notes, but at least she was writing notes at all. She was another one that had taken cleanliness to heart too. It was reassuring that the young students were learning good habits, even if the older students were struggling. A small smile might have even tugged at Noble’s lips at her words as she dropped off her vial. “I’m glad, Hanna. You did good work today…and you can always come use the lab if you need more.”

The Head Girl was the next to bring up her vial, and Noble wasn’t surprised in the slightest to see the colour of her vial was pretty much identical to his own. She was quite the capable brewer. “I suggest you keep this to human use only,” Noble said, having a good idea what she might take the rest for. “The comfrey may have unpredictable effects on other species…especially if there’s any broken skin.” And there was no Hirsch around to protect her any more. He doubted Scrimgeour would take a kind view of her experiments.

He glanced up from Jessa’s vial to see Max looking around at everyone else’s cauldron, Juniper’s in particular. A quick glance at the Slytherin’s potion told him why. It was looking a little less than ideal. “There’s a reason yours doesn’t look like that, Maxton. Care to guess what it is?” Noble couldn’t be certain, of course. But he had a good idea that the comfrey measurements had something to do with it.

Thankfully Kaitlynn seemed to have been paying much better attention to his demonstration, and was, quite frankly, showing the sixth year up. Especially when she started cleaning up too. “Don’t to forget to bring up a sample, Kaitlynn.”

There was a little flurry of samples being dropped off now, as more people started to finish up. “Looking promising, Juniper,” Noble said, holding her vial up to the light before putting it in the tray with the others. Lucas brought his sample next, and Noble gave him a nod. “Yours too, Lucas. Much better than your bandaging work.” Not the best in the room, but passable for a first year. It seemed the younger years were on a roll, and there was the faintest of smiles curling in the corner of Noble’s lip when he saw Trinetta’s next. “Good job.” Possibly the best he’d seen so far, other than Jessa’s. Natasha’s got a nod too. He could see that it was a less viscous than ideal, but the colour was good. “An extra thirty seconds of simmering next time, Natasha, and you’ll be there.”

He glanced up now, and it was somewhat of a surprise to see the contents of Zoryn’s cauldron were pretty much the right colour. A bit murky perhaps, but still…better than several of her previous efforts. He should split Zoryn and Derf up more often. “Not too shabby at all, Zoryn.” He still expected to see her at lunch though. He was about to remind of her of such when Abra happened…

Honestly, he hadn’t expected the Gryffindor to actually move to the front…but Noble wasn’t going to stop him if he felt it’d help stay on track. Unfortunately staying on track clearly hadn’t happened, not seeing the plumes of smoke coming from the Prefect’s cauldron. Noble flicked his wand from his holster, banishing the spoilt potion and following that up with a gentle wind charm so the smoke would dissipate more quickly. “Start again, Abraham.” Noble’s voice was far from impressed. “And this time remember to add the willow leaves one at a time…” There were only six ingredients and six steps in this potion, it really wasn’t difficult…as many of the first years had illustrated.

That dealt with, Noble’s gaze was drawn to Natalie and Zachary. The former was doing a decent job, but the latter? Tut tut. “I expect a full laboratory report, including complete methodology and a discussion about your own results on my desk by tomorrow evening, Zachary.” So blatantly shirking his own notes and relying on his friend’s did not go down well in Noble’s book. He turned now to Natalie. “He’s lucky you were so diligent in your efforts.” Her focus looked like it had paid off. “Good work.”

And the next vial dropped off came with a question. Noble couldn’t help but wonder if that was related to Patrick perhaps having overworked his willow leaves, and he looked conspicuously at the vial the Captain had just handed him. “The potion itself should be fine, but it might have more of a numbing effect than anticipated…lingering some time after the bruise has been healed.” What Patrick had handed him looked fine, but just to be safe… “I would suggest using it sparingly to begin with, and seeing the Healer if the numbness persists.” Did that answer his question? And he saw that amused face there Anna. “Is something funny, Anna?” She’d already lost points today, hadn’t she? “I suggest you come turn in your results if you’re done.”

…that went for them all, actually. His gaze fell on Jackson, checking at what point the Ravenclaw had got up to. “If you’ve finished brewing but haven’t brought me up a vial of your work, you should now do so now. If you haven’t finished, then hurry up about it unless you’re planning to sacrifice your lunch.” They’d had plenty of time to finish. “You also need to clean up your work area before being dismissed. Professor Baldvinsson, anything else to add?”

Bettie did what the professor said and checked her ingredients list and he of coarse was right she for got the arnica root. She just shock her head and sighed. How could she miss the arnica root? She was paying attention and went over it many time. She really wanted to have some of it on hand. She will have to rebrew it later. With thank thought she raised her hand. "Do I need permission to go to the Potions Lab later to redo this?"

Jackson added the dandelion heads. He was making that face he made when he was trying to concentrate, with mouth slightly pursed and brows furrowed. He needed to pay EXTRA attention to anything having to do with potions because he was pretty bad at timing things. He added the three tablespoons of leaves and had to double check which way to stir… three times. He could feel a headache coming on and it really wasn’t good because the heat was NOT helping. Feeling the pound of it starting up he tried to refocus on his potion. He stirred thrice clockwise and waited for it to start turning purple. While he stared at it, he crushed up the willow leaves… Er… Okay there was a little bit of a mess, but he would pick it up after. Finally, he was able to let out a small breath as the potion looked at least a bit like lilac. He began the individual drop of the leaves, Stir, stir, stir… . Next was the willow bark, and then the inevitable wait to see if he had done anything right. After the ten minutes had passed, the paste seemed to be a mustardy yellow and pretty thick. And honestly? …Phew! Because Jackson wouldn’t be surprised if the potion had just exploded on him with how much his focus seemed to be fading. He added some petals and began to fill out his vial info. When he was done, he brought it up to Professor Noble.
