| | Herbology Lesson II - Painting with Plants
Greenhouse One looks quite different today, doesn't it? Why, the inside of the greenhouse almost looks like a very thick forest upon first entering, except for a pathway that looks to the center of the greenhouse where there is a CLEARING with a bunch of tables (in a circular formation) and a chalkboard. The nifty chalkboard Paul Myers used in all of his lessons, in all of his greenhouses. Speaking of Myers, he wore an old, mustard yellow hang off the shoulder oversized t-shirt as well as loose fitting black sweatpants. How Hufflepuf of him.
Since the incident in the Room of Requirement, Paul had been careful not to over exert himself. His lessons had been mellow and low-key, and this one would be no different. He was having a good time teaching this stuff, but alas, nothing too hard on the brain (for those that did enjoy a good challenge). He paced around the tables, eyeing the small "forest" surrounding him anxiously as he awaited students to begin arriving. The aromas in the area were very strong, very fruity, almost, and there were bushes and plants teeming with berries in the plush forest area. On the blackboard were the words, WELCOME TO THE NICER AND HUMANE HUNGER GAMES "I NEED A VOLUNTEER." As tribute, as it were. Some of them would understand the references, others would not, but it didn't really matter to Paul. The lesson would be just fine with or without their recognition. OOC: Come on in (; Your characters got the notice to arrive in clothes they didn't care about. I will be moving on the lesson in roughly 24 hours. I do need a volunteer or two, but don't worry if you don't get to post right away! No extra points or anything will be given to the volunteers. It's more for Paul's IC demonstration to move the lesson on. <3 |

As she put a juicy, ripe raspberry in to her bowl, Sam had to admit it was getting tempting to nibble a few here and there. Not she she would. But there was certainly an allure to lick her fingers where a couple of berries had burst and already made her fingers red and sticky.
With a generous handful each of three berries - cherries, mulberries and raspberries - collected, Sam deposited the basket she'd been collecting them in on her desk, and went to retrieve the other necessities from the front: several bowls for mixing, a small amount of flour and some of the spices. Returning to her desk, she separated out the different fruits between the bowls. Hopefully she'd collected enough, although maybe some other students would be interested in switching colours, share some of the effort?
And then it was time to start mashing. Surely there had to be a better way than mashing it with your hands? Like one of those things she'd seen used by the house elves for pounding herbs and spices; a mestar and portle or something? She wasn't exactly thrilled about the thought of staining her nails, but Sam never shied from getting her hands dirty, and she could always paint them later. Squish. Squish. Squish.

She grinned, taking two of them, passing the few raspberries she collected over as well. "Here, you can add these. I want a LITTLE raspberry color, i think." Oh wait, one more extra bowl for the blended color. The Slytherin went over to where the bowls were and took an extra one. Because she still wanted the yellow and nightshade by themselves.
Proceeding with the tumeric first, the fifteen year old used the base of her palm to mash it, pleasantly surprised with one, how easy it mashed. And two, how relaxing it felt. Only problem, she didn't want to contaminate the nightshade just yet, so how to clean her hands? Oh, towels? Fetching a towel, along with one for Hattie, she wiped her hands on it before proceeding to do the same thing with the nightshade. Harriet honestly didn't mind getting messy. It was kind of in the nature of being artist. She often was found with paint smeared over herself. So she didn't mind getting messy at all. She wasn't so sure if Sky felt the same, but it was easily cleaned up after, so it should be okay. "Just think. It's a chance for us to chill out a little" Exams were nearly upon them, and so they needed some time to chill. They could go do some more studying later. For now, she was going to enjoy the chance to paint. It was something she hadn't done in a while.
She beamed, whilst she mashed the cherries with her hand. It felt a little weird, and she red colour went everywhere. It was pretty vivid though, and she liked that. Maybe she would try this again in the future. If it worked well. She took the towel that Sky had brought over, and then moved to mush up the raspberries too. After that they were both done! Perfect. Now they could move onto the next step. "Okay..." She mused, looking at the next step that they needed to do. " We need to pick out the larger chunks that are left. That make senses. We need smooth mediums to paint with" Since it would be hard to paint with chunks in the paint. So she set about picking the bigger chunks out of the cherry bowl.

Patrick started mushing up the raspberries he picked up when he was gathering berries. He really hopped it gave that nice pink color he was going to need if he was going to paint a beach scene. I mean come on, a sunset was all vibrant colors. he looked around to see what other people were doing, hoping that he wasn't going to be the worst painter. He was much more athletic than he was artistic.
Some of the seeds were coming out of the raspberries as he continued to mush them up in the bowl. He tried to pick them out as he found them to save him the hassle, and bumps later.

| Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite Meticulously, Jessa began picking out the large pieces that remained after the smashing was done. These were thrown back into the bowl with the whole berries for the simple reason that some of her test subjects would appreciate them, whole or not. She tried to treat them as often as she could and berries were hardly available to the girl who seldom went searching the grounds for them.
The Ravenclaw glanced up at the instructions again, being sure she didn't miss a step in the process. Mixing the colours wouldn't be necessary for her. While she didn't have a design in mind, she knew she could get something done with the ones she already had.
Jessa got a bit of the flour between her thumb and forefinger then sprinkled it about as needed. After mixing it all in, it was time to get started. She went over and got herself some paper and brushes. Yeah, she could've used her fingers but today wasn't feeling like that sort of day for her. Paints were messy and while a simple scourgify would've fixed it after, it would still have been messy while it lasted.
No thanks on that one.
Tuning out those around her, the Fourth Year got to work. The colours themselves weren't right but she would be recreating her birds. The darkest shade she used to create branches, winter branches stripped of their leaves.
On them were her darlings. Nothing too sophisticated and fancy as she knew this sort of thing wasn't her forte, but she did put in some effort all the same. By the time she was done, you could reasonably deduce that these were birds and they were happy under her care--okay so maybe you couldn't see all that from just looking at the painting BUT it was still there in some subtle way. Just took a bit of extra knowledge.
When she was done, she set out to clean the area, might as well find something else to do while she waited for the others to be done and the lesson to be dismissed.

Skylar nodded; this was true because despite the majority of the last few months with exams being the last thing on her mind, now that it was closer to exam week, they were back on her mind again and she was STRESSING! So the chance to do something mindless, like finger painting, because who used brushes? Was pretty much awesome .... "Although if we're just finger painting, then the chunks shouldn't matter anyway? It'd probably be more a difference if we were using brushes?" Skylar shrugged, but did as she was told on the list. Once done with the large chunks from each of her shades, she took a fistful of nightshade and a fistful of turmeric, dumping them each into her third bowl and worked it with her fingers to swirl it around into a creamy green-ish color. Although it kind of looked more olive green, but it would get the point across, hopefully. See, she wasn't an artist, so going simply was definitely best here.
One stripe of the blended olive-green, a stripe of the cherry red from Hattie's bowl, a stripe of turmeric, a stripe of nightshade. Perfect. And then in diagonal, dunking her index and middle finger into the raspberry, she wrote neatly across the stripes, 'Four Houses: One Family'. Also, she might have forgotten to wipe her fingers in between each color, which resulted in contaminated turmeric, cherry, nightshade, and raspberry. Also spotted stripes, instead of pure stripes of colours? Glancing into each bowl she frowned, "Oops." Upon realizing what she'd done. |

| Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent Oh wow. Was Henry really so distracted that he hadn't realized he basically just repeated someone else's answer? It would appear so, but he really didn't remember hearing Ace mention game-playing with the berries. It wasn't a big deal though and he gave him a grin and two-fingered salute in return for the thumbs up. Great minds or something.
And of course he'd much rather play a game of berry gobstones than paint with them, but it could prove to be a fun and light class. Henry got up from his seat to collect some of the berries, not really having anything in mind as a subject to paint. Maybe he'd just do something abstract.
Grabbing a few bowls, he separated the fruits into like kinds before heading back to his seat. Henry didn't mind using his hands to mash them up and he began to squish his fingers into the first bowl as he started to think about what he should paint. Or just do it freeform and let the colors guide him.

Squishing berries was messy work indeed, and then she still had to strain any big bits out. What did 'larger' chunks mean anyways? Obviously she didn't want lumpy paint, but at the same time...there was no way she was going to pick all those seeds out. Note to self: in future, strain juices through a sieve.
For now though, she decided she was done. Larger chunks had been unceremoniously thrown on the ground as instructed, and she was ready to add the flour. First she took the mulberry mush, adding a pinch of flour and dash of ginger, and mixing with her paintbrush. It would make for a little ruddy a skin tone, but wasn't too terrible, and she was quickly realising that anything resembling realism was completely out the window. Even her comic book style wasn't going to be stylised enough, but if she could make something vaguely recognisable, that'd be awesome.
Which reminded her - she should probably sketch out an outline. She picked up her pencil and parchment, and roughly sketched out a male figure - one clearly too age to be any of her peers. And then, with a slight frown in concentration, she put paintbrush to paper and started filling in the skin with this weird textured gloop of a paint.
It didn't look too terrible. Maybe?

| ❅ Purple Lightsaber ❅| | Captain Sarcastic | First she should probably get some of paper before she made a mess squishing the berries. The third year headed back to her bowls, first smashing the raspberries then the blackberries, Mulberries and the cherries, though she couldn’t help but to take a few of them and eat them. Since after all she didn’t smash the nightshade up yet.
She wasn’t going to leave that to chance… no today and certainly not after being cursed. She would smash up those very last, she had an idea of what she was going to do as far as a painting. Picking out the big chunks of berry out and throwing them out on the ground.
Adding a pinch of flour to each of the bowls and stirring the mixture with her fingers. She was fine for right now, without adding any turmeric or ginger for the time being. Now for the fun part, finger painting. It was something that she was used to doing with her little brothers so it was nothing to her to get her fingers dirty.
Swiping her figures across the paper alternating between the different colors. She was going for the abstract version of something here. Clearly Juni wasn’t an artist or anything near one. But she was trying, which was all that really mattered in the first place right. She was just about done..... Maybe.
