Default CoMC Lesson 2: Augureys

It was an exceptionally cold day in February. The skies were gloomy, and the ground was covered in snow, though not fresh snow. The dirtiest was mostly around the barn and some parts of the pastures where the winged horses were let out to roam earlier this morning. The cleanest was blanketed around the castle. But the weather didn't bother Aleksandur, he loved it. It made him feel completely at home.

With Hera, as always, wrapped around his neck, Professor Petrov stood waiting in front of neat rows of desks and chairs just outside of the barn. The snow had been pushed to the side, revealing the dead grass underneath, so the students feet wouldn't freeze, and warming charms had been put in place. If they were still cold...they would just have to deal with it.

He severely hoped the students had looked over his rules. Otherwise, they would have to live with the consequences.

OOC: Hello everyone, and welcome to CoMC. As we wait for the lesson to begin, please review the rules linked above. The lesson will start in 24 hours. The lesson has begun please jump in where we are. If you have your student arrive late...beware the consequences.

Alek watched as the students attempted to interact with the birds. They weren't trying nearly hard enough, unsurprisingly. It seemed like this children didn't give two Murtlap tentacles about their education. He folded his arms with a look of derision.

"You have about ten minutes to get your Augurey's trust. If you don't...well...no points for you today." Alek said with a smirk that was more like a grimace. He just didn't understand why they children resisted the new rules so much. Couldn't they just comply? Oh, well. He was just doing the Headmaster a favor by being here. Not his problem if they didn't earn points.

OOC: Sorry for the delayed response. You have about 25 hours to earn your birds trust! Post as much as you want!

One moment she was smiling, the next Archer's eyes narrowed as the spiders started crawling around. The spiders that had once been her carefully crafted phoenix. "Oh yeah, REAL mature Petrov!" she replied, anger tinting her tone as she removed her outer layer to shake off whatever spiders were left.

Wait.....insects did he say? An idea was quickly forming in the Hufflepuff's mind. She marched right up to the container containing said insects and shook the cloak/coat/blazer/whatever off right into it, along with her legs and everything else, making sure to get all the spiders into the container. Take that, 'professor'! Following that performance (and a performance it was), Archer dipped her hand into the container, pulled out a small handful of insects and held them out to one of the Augureys.

Still could've come up with a more exotic creature, Petrov.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy grabbed her writing materials and quickly wrote down what Professor Petrov had written on the board, along with the additional information he had divulged with the class.

  • Has a Ministry rating of XX
When she had finished writing down her list, Daisy got up from her spot and grabbed a container of food to try and get one of the birds to trust her. This was going to be interesting. As she looked at one of the birds, she grabbed a decent handful of feed in her hand and then slowly moved her now opened hand towards the creature. Daisy kept some distance, just in case while saying in a calm voice, "I have some nice food for you. You don't have to worry."

It took a few seconds, but one of the birds had seemed to gain some interest in the newly presented food. Would it be bad form to just put the whole mountain of food out?? Get alllll the augureys? He would totally have tried that had this been last year, or even a couple months ago honestly. He tried to look around at others and see what they were doing, because otherwise he'd just keep staring these birds down. "You're pretty good with creatures, huh?"
It was a relief when their augurey showed an interest in the food left for it and moved closer, and Chloe dropped a few more bugs onto the ground to continue to convince the bird that they were friendly purveyors of good things and not dangerous or scary.

Jackson had her attention as well, but she didn't look away from the bird. No sudden movements, no lack of concentration, y'know? "I like creatures. They make more sense then people do. Now, I think that once it takes those on the ground, offer more in your open hand. Be still and maybe say soft, kind words to it. Creatures know intent."

Jackson began testing his luck looking up at the augurey as it began to pay more attention to the food. The bird was losing his interest in the now statue-still Prefect it seemed. Finally, the bird began eating the bugs on the floor, and Jackson began fiddling with his bugs again. They know intent, huh? Well then they should KNOW that he just wanted to pet one and give it food but apparently they were paranoid. "I wonder if they were being hesitant because they're still getting used to their new caretaker," he wondered aloud. He put an insect on the ground a bit closer to him, so the augurey could see it, and then opened his palm between him and Chloe so that the bird could come to them. The bird definitely seemed like it would be more willing to go to Chloe than him, which was alright as long as he could show Professor Petrov that he had done the assignment.

The bird began its approach and Jackson watched carefully as it started getting surprisingly closer to them. "It's a good thing you're here to help me huh?" he said in a hushed tone, grateful for her expertise in this area. He turned towards her and smiled before turning his attention back to the augurey that was now sniffing around them and their buggy hands.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

After Nettie's...unfortunate attempt at making a statement in Divination, she had kept her mouth shut the entire lesson. Also, she knew pretty much nothing about Augureys. She missed Professor Wayland, but she couldn't help but notice just how easy on the eyes this new professor was. In fact, the last few new recruits that Crazy Authoritarian Headmaster had brought in were very good looking. Nettie couldn't help herself. She was a girl who was finally discovering boys - could you blame her? She also maintained this was probably a rouse by Scrimgeour to keep them distracted. Because it was hard to think of anything else when she was entranced by those cheekbones.

Oh, it was activity time! Thankful to finally be focused on something else, Nettie got up and headed to the blackboard quietly. She, predictably, was choosing to work alone, because she was NOT in the mood for group work right now, thank you very much. She took a handful of fruit flies - grossssssss - and headed to the first Augurey she came across. She cleared her throat and tried not to think about the fact that she was carrying a bunch of dead flies and slowly approached him.

"Hellooooo pretty bird. Want some yummy, yummy flies?" she asked, holding out her hand. Please take them, and get rid of these disgusting things...

With a completely calm and serene face Alek turned to Archer. "That will be twenty points from Hufflepuff for speaking without permission and being disrespectful to a professor, Ms. Calrissian. Keep going and you will have detention," he said in a perfectly calm voice. She didn't want detention with him. He quickly turned on his heel and moved to the front of the class to give them there next set of instructions.

"As was mentioned before, Augurey feathers repel Ink." He said, will stroking the snake at his neck. "Today we are going to do a little...experiment." As he said the word a smirk swam across his lips and a sinister little gleam shown in his eyes. He moved slowly towards Atreyu, pouring a good little snack of different insects in his hands. Because he had been taking care of these birds the past few months, they were used to him and trusted him. Once he was standing right next to the bird, he let Atreyu eat from his hand. As soon as the bird was fully distracted by the large snack, Alek plucked a feather from the plumage on the birds back. The bird squawked painfully and retreated from the man.

He smirked before turning to the class. "Your activity is to take a feather from one of the birds and test the feather against water, oil, milk, blood, and a potion: Draught of Living Death. All of the liquids are in containers by the barn. The experiment is to see which other liquids the feathers repel. Make sure you write down your findings. You have thirty minutes." He paused, "You may begin." Alek moved out of the path to the barn, and watched quietly.

OOC: Again, so sorry for the delay. So your activity is to retrieve a feather from the Augurey and test it against the 5 different liquids. You can do this in 5 different posts or you can do it in one big post. The choice is up to you. You can have your results be different from others. No answer is wrong. You can also choose how your retrieve a feather as well. We don't expect you to be as brutal as we are. You have until the 31st at 11 pm EST to complete this activity. Good luck. Make it interesting.

Misunderstood, sad and preferring to remain hidden - Augureys were such relatable magical creatures. Davis completed his notes and watched as Professor Petrov summoned four of the fascinating birds from the barn.

The sixth year had indeed seen Susie, Romeo, Julia and Atreyu from his many visits to the school barn. Frankly, he preferred playing with the cuddly Puffskeins and Crups, but every now and then he would try to interact with the Augureys, something which proved to be immensely difficult because of how shy they were. Of course, all this was before Petrov came to power and banned students from entering the barn. Davis did not bother asking him for permission - he was sure his request would be rejected. It did not help either that the professor looked kinda scary.

Walking up to the blackboard, Davis picked a handful of insects that he imagined the birds would enjoy. Standing there beside the other students attempting to feed the Augureys, he tried to come up with a strategy to gain the creature's trust. He figured that the best way to approach it would be to show that he was not threatening in any way... but how would he do that?

The boy walked towards the closest Augurey cautiously and crouched down in front of it. “Hey, little birdie... Romeo, Julia, sorry I don’t know your name... anyways, I have some yummy food for you! Thought you might want to try...” he said quietly as he laid some of the bugs down on the ground between them. He then took a step back to give the bird some space. He pretended to look elsewhere, while watching the creature from the corner of his eyes. It seemed to be interested in the food he offered... after a moment's hesitation, it swiftly bent its head and picked up a large fly in its beak. He smiled and stepped a bit closer, and was happy to find that it did not fly away, but looked at him as it munched on its snack.

"Oh, I'm sure you would have gotten there on your own," Chloe touched the top of the augurey's head with her fingertip, and when it didn't flinch away, she offered it a beetle. Delicious snackies! "That's a beautiful good girl." Not Jackson. The bird.

She paused as the professor moved the lesson along, cringing away from him even from several feet away when he pulled a feather from the back of the bird. He wanted each of these groups to pull a feather from one of these four birds? They'd pluck them bald! And probably traumatize them from ever trusting humans again. She wouldn't do it. Couldn't, in fact.

"Jackson. I can't... I won't pull a feather from her. Is there any other way to get a feather?"

Jackson watched the professor slightly wide eyed. If Jackson wasn’t crazy, it looked as though there was some amusement in the professor’s face. And wait… so they had to pluck feathers out of these birds that they had just met and that barely trusted them. That sounded safe. Jackson looked over at his partner with a look conveying slight shock. He had not expected having to de-feather anything today. Or any day. Ever. That wasn’t his game. He raised his hand immediately after Chloe finished her question. and waited to be called on, even though he was sure he already knew the answer. “Professor, is there another way to complete this without plucking a feather from them?” He looked at the augurey, back to Chloe, and back to the professor, hopeful that there would be an alternate solution.

Alek raised and eyebrow at that question. Did these children not know how to pluck feathers? "Well, if your too scared to pull a feather off of a bird...look on the ground and see if they have fallen out. If they haven't there is no other way. You'll also lose points for not following directions. But it's your grade." He said with a smirk before turning away to watch the other students progress.

"You have about 15 minutes to complete your experiment," He said, closing his pocket watch and putting it away. The minutes couldn't pass quickly enough. He had a special lesson to get to with a certain Hufflepuff prefect.

OOC: You have roughly 34 hours to complete this activity.

Getting the trust of one of the augureys really wasn’t a major concern of Stasya’s. It had more been a worry that the poor birds had been conditioned not to trust them since the departure of Professor Wayland. As it was, one of the augureys had moved closer to her nearly at the same time as Professor Petrov had moved the lesson on, and she’d protectively curled her free arm around whichever augurey, Susie as she determined after a moment, had approached her when she’d witnessed the brutality coming from the professor toward Atreyu. That was entirely uncalled for, and also only proved that the professor really had felt sorry he couldn’t force her and the other students to feed them fairies.

Either way, she’d let Susie eat the rest of the insects in her hand as she regarded her options. Like Chloe, she was definitely not going to torture the defenseless bird, but she also wasn’t entirely sure it was right that they lose points for merely respecting the augureys’ right not to have all their feathers plucked just to amuse the sadistic professor. Plus, it only made the ban regarding the visits to the barn that much more suspicious and made her wonder exactly how she could rescue the creatures. All the creatures, although especially the ones she was particularly attached to (including her own pets of course).

Not only that, but she began murmuring softly to Susie, asking the bird itself if there was a chance she’d let her have a feather. There had to be more than just the two options laid out by the professor.

Jackson stared for a moment at the professor before looking back at the augurey. He nodded in acknowledgement before going back to feeding the bird. He continued trying to get the augurey's trust. He put his hand near the augurey like he would if he wanted to pet a cat. He slowly began to pet the creature and he searched for a loose feather. "Hi there... okay... Hey..."
he said gently. It took a few minutes, but a feather finally fell into his hand as he stroked the bird's wing. He gasped, first from shock but then with relief since he thought that was close enough to 'plucking' it.

"Let's just get through this," he whispered. He was not happy about losing points for NOT harming the animal. "This is supposed to be CARE of Magical Creatures," he grumbled, hopeful that only Chloe could hear him.

Was it just him or were these students moving at a glacial pace. He sighed with frustration, crossing his arms in front of his chest while walking through the desks. Why would these children not do the tasks required of them? So be it. It's their grade not his.

Checking his pocket watch, he exhaled and was suddenly happy. "Times up. Clean up your desks and make sure you put the supplies provided to you back where they belong. You are dismissed." He called out. "Next lesson I expect you to bring your backbones seeing as you lost them somewhere along the way to class." With that, he made his way toward the blackboard to watch the students clean, pack and leave his sight.

OOC: Thanks everyone. I will leave this open until 7pm EST tomorrow for anyone that wants to catch up or post.
