Default Potions Lesson 1

It had turned snowy outside, and the walk along the potions corridor to the first class after Christmas was a little nippy. Inside the classroom it was a tad warmer, Noble having already lit his burner at the front of the class to try and take the chilly edge off the room. Thankfully today's class was a practical one, as evidenced by the trays of ingredients on the side bench, and the room would soon warm up once they started the brewing proper.

Noble lent against the front of his desk, sipping a strong, dark coffee from the new travel mug his daughter had gifted him for Christmas. His gaze moved to the door and the students entering. "Hurry up and come in...let's try keep some of the heat in the room, shall we?" Any other day he would have them turn on their burners early whilst they were covering the theory, but that hardly seemed a wise idea with the initial experiment they'd be performing today.

Lesson progression:
Greetings and first question
Replies and second question
Replies and trying to brew with impaired sight
Moving on to brewing the Oculus potion
Brewing step 2
Brewing step 3

Avalon's furrowed her brow at Professor Noble's tone as he responded to her question. She didn't think it was too odd of a question to ask. She recalled that several potions could be salvaged if you made a mistake. And goodness, she had just stirred the wrong way one time. Why did it matter which direction she stirred, anyway? It's not like she added an extra teaspoon of an ingredient or set her cauldron on fire. But alas, she didn't want to cause a scene, so she nodded politely. "Thank you," she said as he vanished her cauldron.

She suppressed a sigh as she measured out another cup of murtlap essence and brought it to a simmer. Taking extra care to measure her gingko and eyebright precisely, she peered at the board, which now showed all the directions. After stirring clockwise twice (she would not mess this up again), Avalon watched her cauldron and her wristwatch like a hawk for the next five minutes. Thankfully, her potion turned a beautiful lavender color.

It still seemed a bit weird to add a cucumber to an eyesight potion. However, she had often heard of Muggles placing cucumbers on their eyes when they wanted to relax, so perhaps there was some sort of relationship there. The liquid in the cauldron darkened into a royal purple hue. Moving right along! She took her moly flower, which she had placed at the corner of her workstation in the mean time, and dropped it gingerly into the brew. Then, it was back to the wristwatch to time the simmering. At exactly three minutes and thirty seconds, she flipped off her burner. And now to wait again, she thought to herself as she dipped her thermometer into the cauldron.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy carefully listened to Professor Noble's instructions and waited to continue her potion making. Within moments, the timer sounded to notify that the five minutes had elapsed.

Daisy looked at her potion which was a nice shade of lavender and added her grated cucumber. After cleaning her stirring rod, Daisy stirred the potion twice in an anti-clockwise direction which resulted in the potion turning royal purple in colour. She then cleaned her stirring rod.

Carefully grabbing her moly flower, Daisy dropped it in the centre of her cauldron before she set her time for three and a half minutes so her potion could simmer. Once the timer went off, Daisy turned off the burner.

She then cleaned her thermometer and placed it in the cauldron and waited for it to register 24°C. Once the right temperature had been reached, Daisy removed the thermometer and magically cleaned it. She then added the 5ml of moondew sap and used her stirring rod to stir the potion in a figure eight motion.

As Daisy let the potion cool, she cleaned any equipment that she had finished using and wrote the potion recipe in her notebook. As her potion began to cool down, the shade was fading to a sort of lilac colour.

5g dried ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
5g dried eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis)
50g grated cucumber
1 moly flower
5ml moondew sap

Recipe

1. Bring the murtlap essence to a low simmer, and sprinkle in the ginkgo and eyebright. Stir twice clockwise and leave to simmer for five minutes. Meanwhile, grate the cucumber.
2. Once the potion has turned pale lavender, add the cucumber. Stir twice anti-clockwise. The potion should turn a royal purple.
3. Drop the moly flower in the centre of the cauldron. Simmer for exactly three and a half minutes before turning off the heat.
4. Once the temperature has dropped to 24°C, stir in the moondew sap with a figure of eight motion. Leave to fully cool before using, by which time the purple should have faded to lilac.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina thought she had done alright with the simple potion, especially considering the fact that she was working blind, but when she removed her goggles, she saw her potion was bright orange instead of the periwinkle blue Noble said it should be. Wait, what? How in Merlin's socks had that happened? Without her sight, the measurements were bound to be inexact, but surely having slightly wrong amounts of the right ingredients wouldn't cause that drastic a difference in color, right? Then she found the problem… fish eyes. She'd been so preoccupied that she misremembered the directions and added fish eyes instead of beetle eyes. Ugh! How could she be so stupid?! She hadn't added the wrong ingredients to a potion since she was a second year back at Beauxbatons.

Tina was so frustrated, she wanted to scream! She angrily vanished the evidence of her failure from her mortar and pestle, then gave them, her spoon, *and the rest of her station a thorough cleaning. Could she please just forget about this lesson and go back to her dorm? Or maybe to the art room or quidditch pitch to blow off steam? She'd lost all interest in attempting the oculus potion. Knowing her, she'd probably find a way to mess that up too! But she knew she could expect a reprimand from Noble if she didn't at least try, and in her current mood, she was liable to go off if that happened.

This time, Tina was determined not to make any more embarrassing mistakes! She paid careful attention to Noble's demonstration, jotting down the directions in her notes and cross referencing with her textbook to make sure she had it 100% correct. She measured out one cup of murtlap essence, double checking her measuring cup to make sure the liquid stopped exactly at the 1 cup line. After adding the murtlap to her cauldron, she lit the burner with a quick incendio, taking a moment to calm herself before casting so her anger wouldn't turn what was supposed to be a low simmer into a raging inferno. She peeked into her cauldron and, satisfied that it was beginning to simmer as it should, went to the side bench for ginko and eyebright.

Tina measured exactly 5 grams each of ginko and eyebright. weighting them twice to make absolutely sure she had the correct amounts. Once she got back to her station, she checked her potion again. It had arrived at a low simmer; now it was time to add the ginko and eyebright. She carefully sprinkled the ingredients then stirred clockwise once… and twice. So far, so good. When she'd finished stirring, she picked up her timer and set it for exactly five minutes.

Now it was back to the side bench for cucumber. Tina alternated grating and weighing the cucumber until she had precisely 50 grams. Setting the cucumber aside for now, she removed a moly flower from her potion kit, taking extra care not to jostle the delicate petals. Before long, the timer dinged, and Tina inspected the contents of her cauldron. The potion was definitely pale lavender, but she was a little worried it might be too pale or not pale enough. She was pleased to see that after she added her cucumber and gave two anticlockwise stirs, her potion turned the same shade of royal purple that Professor Noble's had in the demonstration.

Tina eyed her cauldron to find the exact center spot to drop her moly flower. Once the flower was added, she set her timer again for three and a half minutes. When the timer went off again, she extinguished the burner and gently stuck her thermometer in the cauldron, never once taking her eyes off it as she watched the temperature drop. 27, 26, 25… finally, 24 degrees exactly! Tina measured out 5 ml of moon dew sap and added it to the potion, stirring it in with a figure 8 motion. As her potion cooled, she watched it gradually change from its purple shade to lilac and awaited further instructions.

Now that the potion had turned the pale lavender color, Nina added the cucumber and stirred twice anti-clockwise. Her attitude had not, in fact, changed during the holiday. She still planned to let her potion go wrong, but to let it fail immediately at the beginning would mean risking being asked to redo it it entirely. If she waited long enough, she knew that she could run through the majority of the time they had allowed for the lesson. There was a method to everything she did, believe it or not.

All of this was calculated.

Finally, she dropped the moly flower in the center of the cauldron, instead of letting it simmer for three and a half minutes, she stopped it early at just one minute. Then, without waiting for the temperature to drop, she stirred in the moondew sap (haphazardly, and not with a figure eight motion). When her Professor had his eye turned on another student, she quickly added some extra dried ginkgo and eyebright into the cauldron.

And waited.

Eni looked up as the Professor was speaking, but for a moment too long and her potion started to bubble a bit too much. Turning down her burner she added the cucumber and stirred the mixture. She saw the potion turning from lavender to a royal purple just as Noble said.

Satisfied with the color Eni added the flower she'd put on the table earlier to the centre of the potion. Setting her timer again she waited and watched as her potion simmered for exactly three and a half minutes before the shrill ring of the timer went off and Eni turned off the burner, just as Noble explained.

Setting in her thermometer she waited for what felt like ages before it was at an even 24°C and she could stir in her moondew sap in a figure eight motion. She was anxious to see that pretty lilac shade she wanted to appear. That would feel right....

Perfect!

Eni smiled as she got to finish another great potion.

Five minutes was a LONG time to wait, wasn't it? The third year was almost getting bored, constantly checking the timer to see how long he had left. And it seemed as though time was ticking by veeeeeeeery slooooooow-

Oh, time's up!

And with that, and almost no time spared, he added in the grated cucumber to the mix. Taking up his stirrer, he placed it at the very top of the cauldron, where the twelve o'clock would be, and started stirring the potion. Twice anti-clockwise, wasn't it? One..... and two. There. Easy. So simple. The smile on his face said it all.

When that was done, Lucas took the flower and added it into the cauldron, as close to the centre as he could get it. Was it accurate? Not really. But he had no time to think about that and he..... really didn't want to. Instead, he reached for the timer and set it to three and a half minutes. Three and a half minutes of even more waiting.

Sigh.

He took this moment to rest his legs. Noble wouldn't mind, right? Because it was very boring, waiting for the timer to go off. What was he supposed to do?! Sit and stare at the potion while it brewed? Looking up, he started looking around at what other people were doing and seeing if his potion was very far off. It wasn't...... the right shade of purple, judging by the colours in other people's potions, but hey, at least he had a po-

Oh, time's up! Again.

Lucas reached over and turned the burner off. Completely. And then, in went the thermometer to check the temperature. This..... was another waiting game but at least he had something to do now. He kept his eyes on the thermometer and watched as the little indicator went down and down and doooooooown until it reached the twenty-four degrees mark.

It was only when the temperature had reached the mark that he added in the moondew sap and started stirring it. Once again, he started at the very top and moved the stirrer in the same way he'd draw an 8: by going to the left and down and then up again. It was one motion but it was enough to bring a smile to the third year's face because hey, look! The potion was getting lighter!

And now what? Was that it?

His own potion cooled to the correct temperature, Noble added the moondew sap and stirred it in the required figure of eight motion, before moving to address the class once more. “Once you’ve added the moondew sap and stirred in the figure of eight, the potion needs to be left to fully cool before use.” No-one wanted a still warm potion dropped into their eye. “You’ve got three minutes to finish up. Please turn in a clearly labelled vial of your attempt to the tray at the front for marking, and make sure your workstation is as clean as you found it at the start of class.” He would check, and he would deduct points from those who left their desk in a dishevelled state. “Your homework is a 1,000 word essay on how you would administer the oculus potion to a dragon suffering from conjunctivitis, due at the start of next class.”

ooc note: And that's a wrap! Thank you all so much for coming, it's always so fun reading all your charries' shenanigans! I'll leave the thread only for another 24 hours or so for anyone that wants to finish up :3

Nina wasted no time cleaning her workstation and her supplies. She quickly poured some of her potion into a viable, labeled it with her curly script, and stood up. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, and she made her way up to the front where she turned her vial in and quickly headed for the door. Another day, another potions lesson that she flunked on purpose. The ends justified the means. But it was still entirely draining.

Eni wasted no time in casting a few cleaning charms around her work station once she had her vial filled and labelled. Giving a final wipe down manually she brought her vial to the front and into the tray. She loved this class, but she also loved to be done any class. Especially when she was gonna have to tame her hair after all of this humidity. Humidity is just not good for her hair.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy's potion had cooled down and was a perfect shade of lilac and so she grabbed a vial and cleaned it before filling the vial up with some of the potion and labelling the vial with, "Daisy Swann. Seventh Year - Hufflepuff" in neat handwriting. She then used her wand to perform a cleaning charm so that her workstation was spotless. Daisy then placed her vial in the tray at the front of the classroom and after saying her goodbye to Professor Noble, she exited the classroom.

Analiese's potion wasn't exactly pale lavender - it was more mauve. She certainly hadn't inherited her mum's potioneering skills. She shrugged and added the grated cucucmber. She stirred the concoction twice anti-clockwise and waited for it to change colour. And... that was more or less royal purple. The young Claw dropped the moly flower in the centre of the cauldron and let it simmer for three and a half minutes. She turned the heat off and waited for the temperature to drop. Analiese stirred in the moondew sap in a rather wonky figure eight motion. She let the potion cool and started to clean her workstation.

Analiese looked for a vial and filled it up with her concoction. She walked over to the front of the classroom and carefully placed it on the tray. She grabbed her book bag and, with a thorough clean-up of her workstation, exited the classroom after saying her goodbye to Professor Noble.

Right, she was being slightly careless with the grater, but luckily, nothing but cucumber got in there, especially once she slowed at Professor Noble's warning.

As soon as her timer went off, she added the cucumber since her potion was exactly the right color of lavender. Then she stirred twice anti-clockwise, watching as her potion gradually darkened into a royal purple color. Dropping the moly flower into the center of the cauldron, she set her timer for three and a half minutes and let the potion shimmer. Once her timer went off, she turned the burner off and slipped her thermometer in, careful not to let the potion splash back onto her hand. Once it was placed, she watched the mercury (or whatever the thing used for its liquid) drop until it reached exactly 24 degrees C, then removed it and carefully added the 5ml of moondew sap and stirred in a figure eight motion before letting the potion cool until lightened into a nice lilac.

That accomplished, she carefully transferred her potion to a vial that she labeled 'Sterling Archer Calrissian, seventh year, Hufflepuff' that she in the tray for grading, returning to her station to properly clean it and collect her things. With that done, she left the classroom with a polite nod in Noble's direction.

Tina kept a close watch on her cooling potion, half expecting something to go wrong at any moment. By the time Noble gave the three minute warning, it had lightened to a nice shade of lilac, and the Ravenclaw breathed a silent sigh of relief. Thank Merlin, she made it through the rest of this class without making any more humiliating mistakes! Now all she had to do was clean up and hand in her potion, and she was in the clear.

She produced an empty vial from her supplies and carefully filled it with the oculus potion, making sure not to spill a drop on the table, then labeled it in her nearest handwriting:

Quote:
Tina Dantes
6th year
Ravenclaw
Setting the vial aside for now, Tina turned her attention to cleaning up. She gave each piece of equipment a thorough scourgify before returning it to its proper place in her kit, then did the same for the table. She even checked the floor around her station for anything that might've spilled during that disaster of a mini activity. Once she was satisfied that her area was spotless, she packed her supplies back into her bag and grabbed her vial. She gently deposited it on the tray, saying a polite goodbye to the professor on her way out of the classroom.
