Astronomy Lesson 1 - The Northern Lights

The door to the Astronomy class is wide open and as you enter you see that the room is nicely lit and properly warmed for a growing colder early November midnight. Despite the windows being open and a cool breeze drifting through them, it’s still fairly warm.

The desks are all arranged neatly in their usual pattern, and there doesn’t seem to be any assigned seating anymore. Apparently Professor Kennedy has given up on that, or he learned his students names? Either way, feel free to sit wherever you wish.

The telescopes looked shiny in the bright light and yet you can’t help but notice how bright the moon and stars look tonight, the long windows in the room really gave such a good view of the night sky.

You will notice something though as you enter the room,Kalen isn’t sitting at his desk. No, he is standing next to a window, silhouetted against the sky. Peering upwards as if looking for something.

Huh.. wonder what that’s all about?

OOC: Welcome to Astronomy class!. Just remember that even though this is the first Rp’d class this is not your second class with Professor Kennedy! Come on in, say Hi and we will continue on in about 24 hours.. ish! Also please keep the chatting to a minimum! Class has started! All late comers will face IC consequences, so feel free to pretend like your Charrie was here all along.

Maddie wrinkled her eyebrows inward. She thought Porlocks were pigs? Then Derf, in true Derf style, launched into a thorough explanation of just what a Porlock was. "Ohh," she said, nodding her head in understanding. She'd say more on that note, but they were kind of in the middle of something. "Porlocks it is!" She had just remembered she had a beam of light coming from her wand, when it was turned into a pretty shade of pink.

Speaking of pink, she should really work on changing some herself...

Instead of conjuring another beam of light from her wand, Maddie moved to the middle of the room where a collection of ribbons awaited her. "PINK!" she called out, flicking her wand forward. The ribbon turned pink, which in turn caused Maddie to beam in pride. "Awesome!"

She returned to her group and cast another beam of light. "Fluctus Lux!" she said, waving her wand in a ribbon-like fashion.

Regardless of it she actually meant it or not, the Ravenclaw's wheels were now turning in her head. "There's a way." She said.

The thing with Jessa was....she absolutely enjoyed tinkering with anything she could get her hands on. Constantly modifying or otherwise altering things just to see how much she could. This was a more intriguing concept to her than simply changing the colour of ribbons.

"It's a bit complex....so I'm not sure the younger ones can but the idea's to charm the ribbons to repel any colour but green--so even if they go pink, they just go green again after." She explained, looking to both Ronan and Chloe too. They...they were as likely to be able to get such a thing done. "Change the behaviour of the light patterns and everything else will fall into place. Animation might work if you've got the concentration specifically for light molecules." If they wanted to work at that, she would, but she wasn't gonna walk around changing light to green, thanks.

Now that got her attention right away. A shield charm was something she could cast but it was Jessa's idea that really interested the second year. Huh? Oh, it seemed if anyone would know the way it would be the Ravenclaw Prefect and to be honest, Skylar was just glad to get her engaged. Complex, yes, so the younger students could continue to charm the ribbons. "That sounds really cool, I say we do it." Because what good would having lots of green ribbons be if they were able to be changed over?

All about strategy here and truth be told, making the activity slightly more complicated. Perhaps they'd get credit for challenging themselves more? She smiled at Rylee, changing two more. She was doing great! Now they just had to learn the spell to hold the color. Or at least, Skylar was assuming it was a spell and not some experiment thing that would take five hours because they didn't have that kind of time.

Kalen looked at his watch and clapped his hands. “All right, class is over. Time to head out.” Probably to bed, but who really knew these days.

He quickly scanned over the lights in the room and smiled. “Looks like the Pink team won, so all the members of the pink team can pick up a chocolate frog on the way out. ” He said as he indicated a basket of sealed chocolate frogs by the door.

“And keep a look out for an assignment I’ll have going up in the next few days! See you all next week. ”

He said as he waved his wand and all the ribbons of lights were gone, and he made his way back over to the window to catch the rest of the Aurora.

Oh good, she was interested. "It won't take all that much. Animating the light's the hardest part and only because of the level of concentration and power required to ensure every single particle is charmed to behave the way we want it to. So..." She looked up at a stream of green light floating by. "In this case, you'd wanna end up charming the whole length, thinking of it as a whole as well as individual pieces, otherwise you might only end up animating half of it and get a ribbon that's both pink and green." If only half the light particles were rejecting the green, the other half could still easily be turned.

But then....the lesson was over. There was only mild disappointment at not having the chance to try the strategy but on a whole, it was no real loss to her.

Jessa finally eased off the windowsill, levitating her bag and belongings over to herself and getting repacked to leave.

"Later Mr. Kennedy." She said, heading for the door. It was still a fairly early hour but tonight...perhaps she would actually use the time to sleep. Her potions were for the most part sorted and there was nothing in urgent need of her attention. Yes, a good night's sleep actually sounded like a solid plan.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH PINK PORLOCKS!

Despite still not being able to produce a proper ribbon of light, all in all this had been a successful lesson for the Hufflepuff. Most of the scientific babble had sorta just gone in one ear and out the other, but he was inspired to go back to the library and look through some mythology books about these things. Maybe he could figure out a way to make things stick by connecting the scientific and the mythical together. Weave a story to help him study for his Astronomy OWL - which he didn't think he would perform particularly WELL on but he didn't want to fail either. He could get Stephanie to help him with this too.

Pocketing his wand, the fifth year GRINNED at his teammates and held his hand up for a GROUP HIGH FIVE! Because well done, you know!? "Great job everyone!" he praised as he hurried back over to his things. Throwing the librarian a quick wave, Derf hurried out of the classroom to begin the LONG trek back down to the Hufflepuff common room.

As class came to an end, Kye couldn't help but smirk a little at Derf's enthusiasm. Kye hadn't been listening so much to their talk about what exactly a porlock was. Ah, Derf was such a cute little Prefect! She included herself in the team high five, before grabbing her things. "Bye, Professor! Bye Porlocks!"

Still standing by her group she had been able to hear Jessa go on to explain the level on concentration that would be needed in order to charm the strand of light to remain green and reject any other color. The process sounded simple but she knew it wouldn't be. It would test her focus and her magically capabilities which was something she liked to do. Challenging herself was a good thing, it helped her learn.

Only the lesson was over now. She would have to try working on her more in her own time. Even though her group didn't win that didn't seem to get her down at all, chocolate frogs were yummy but they weren't her favorite. As least they all tried and it was a fun lesson.

Going to grab her bag she turned back to smile and wave, "Thanks for the lesson, Professor Kennedy!" Rylee headed out into the corridor making her way towards the Gryffindor common room.

She was a failure, more then a failure, she was a disaster. Chloe Mcarthy had sat the entire activity and just stared at everyone, she was so confused. She went unnoticed because she was so tiny that hiding behind a desk came easy for her. So she watched everyone do their activity and she stayed confused and worried about being seen. She had no clue how she was ever considered a Ravenclaw at this point, but the eleven year old breathed a sign of relief when class was ending.

Gathering her things she sat still watching people leave and not wanting to be too noticed. How was she going to help get points for Ravenclaw if she couldn't even figure out the work. She felt like such a muggleborn at that moment and wondered why she didn't learn more off Gunnar this summer.

Finally gathering her things to leave she made her way to the professor and tugged on his sleeve. "Professor, I don't think I got it today and I'm sorry I failed you." Could she maybe just go home now?
