Default Charms Lesson 1: Remember Me

today'scharms lesson takes place on a chilly early November morning, but never fear! Professor Marchand has placed several heating charms on the classroom to keep it nice and toasty. As always, there are refreshments laid out on the table in the back of the room. Today's offerings include mini cheesecakes and hot cocoa.

The professor himself stands in his usual place at the front of the room, ready to greet the arriving students with a warm smile. Upon walking into the classroom, you may notice the setup looks a little different today. The desks are pushed together in groups of four, and at the center of each group of desks is a small maze. And that isn't the only strange thing! There is a cage sitting on Professor Marchand's desk; inside are many brightly-colored toy mice. Why does the professor have toy mice on his desk? Does it have anything to do with the lesson? You'll find out soon!

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Charms lesson of the term! Class will officially start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (1:30 AM EST [GMT -5] Jan. 22) HAS STARTED!

She gave a big grin to the professor as he said she was doing well,
but she wasn't worried about not doing well. She quite liked this subject and this was fun. Doing the Confundo charm a few more times he got the mouse to go through the maze. Once that was successful Zita decided it was time to work on the other charms.

Placing the mouse at the front again she did the wand movement, "Mismemini" thinking about the mouse already knowing exactly where to go without needing the cakes. As she did this she noticed her little mouse just zip right through like he had done it a thousand times and at the end, he looked triumphant but didn't seem to care about the cake at all.

The confundus charm.

One of her least favorite charms, beaten only by certain memory charms. Cassie didn’t like that power to control and eliminate, even temporarily, people’s memory. It had been her downfall during the Inter-school challenge her fifth year with her reluctance to work on the ‘muggle’ that she had had to deal with in her try. She gave her father a lot of credit for his work as a reminiscator but it wasn’t something she saw herself doing. Finally some elimination of what she did or didn’t want to do after graduation.

But that was the future…this was today’s lesson. The seventh year supposed she should be grateful that she knew ahead of time that her target was an inanimate object like the dummy had truly been. Hopefully it would make it easier to follow through with the careful concentration Professor Marchand mentioned as a necessary component to the casting. She practiced the wand movements and incantations as directed, making sure not to use them together just yet. Not that she really wanted to use them at all.

Now they were moving on…to the false memory charm. Cassie listened intently to what they were being told, taking down notes and wondering just where they were going with everything. The mention of Obliviate made her swallow in nervousness but thankfully when Marchand gave them another activity to take on, he had given them an option on spells to use. Mouse or no…inanimate object or no…the seventh year didn’t want to use THAT spell again. False memories were more than enough for her to inflict on her fake blue mouse in the maze.

“Mismemini’ she tried out.
“Mismemini….Mismemini…Mismemini.”

Now for the actual fake memory. She set her mouse back at the start of the maze and took aim at the fake creatures. “Mismemini’ she cast, giving it a map of the maze that was far from the actual path that it was done in to confuse the animated toy. At first it moved fine around part of the trail. But then it stopped and skittered around as the memory didn’t match what it was facing. Cass lifted it and let it run a little more before switching tactics. “Confundus.” This time it didn’t seem to work all that well. She had lost her focus and lowered her wand with a sigh. Her head down on the table in front of her.

She really didn’t like memory charms.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

When she felt she'd seen enough of the obviously disoriented mouse, Jessa ended the incantation and place it back in the cage for another one of her group members to have a go at it. Her hand rose, even as the other moved to grab a fresh piece of parchment. "Professor, what happens if you place separate memory charms on the subject that directly contradict each other? You know, two separate memories that couldn't both be possible at the same time." Like.......a memory of something that both happened and didn't. She suspected in the case of a human, depending on the situation they may decide to believe the one over the other based on logic but what about objects that lacked critical thinking?

As for her findings, she couldn't help thinking they didn't necessarily achieve the same goal--sure, the results were the same but....there was just something about it.

She thought it over while she got out her quill and inkwell, hoping she'd be able to effectively explain what all was going through her head having seen both spells in action.

SPOILER!!: Parchment
Confundo -: Mouse seemed entirely out of it. He couldn't recognize the walls let alone the fact he was in a maze. I don't think he knew really what to do.

Mismemini -: He was confused, sure but...it was a different....more subtle sort of confusion that you wouldn't really notice unless you knew what he was originally charmed to do.

Rose just stood there, not sniffing or checking things out on her hind legs. She was simply satisfied being right where she was. Not sure if the charm had worked correctly or not, Emmalyn took the chunk of cheesecake and sat it right next to her mouse. Rose still seemed uninterested. “Hey, I think it worked. I wanted Rose to think she didn’t like cheesecake and now she won’t eat it.”

"Good one," Night said. She would never has figured out that one so quickly.

Night had an idea. "Let's race them. First, without a charm, and then with. See if it makes any difference." There were no rules against that, right? She set up Minty and laid out another piece of cheesecake.

"Mismemini," she said under her breath. There was no way she wasn't going to get tongue tied with that new one. "Mismemini. Mismemini
That seemed like a fantastic idea to her. Rose and Minty could race to the cheesecakes, or rather, race to see which couldn't find them? It would be fun either way. Plus, she felt better with Rose having a friend in the maze with her.

"Great idea!" She exclaimed as she place Rose in the Maze next to Minty. "First time no charm." She blocked the mice with her hand so they would have to start at the very same time. "In three, two, one...GO!" she lifted her hand and watched excitedly as the mice ran the maze. Both mice were fast, turning corners and sniffing the air for their prize. They arrived at a crossroad, Minty going left and Rose going right. Unfortunately for Rose, Minty's path lead straight to the cheesecake.

"Wow, Minty is fast and smart." She was proud of her friends mouse. "Now, let's try it with one of the memory charms and see what happens." She thought for a moment about which charm would be best in this case. "I think the confundus charm might work best for this, since we still want them to try to find the cheesecake. Do you agree?" She asked Night as she placed Rose back at the start of the maze. "How about you run this race and we both cast our charm on the count of three?"

1: confundus- Rose was confused into not knowing how to navigate the maze after the charm was placed on her. When offered the cheesecake, she still wanted to eat it.
2: Mismemini- Rose was not interested in even trying the maze. She no longer liked the cheesecake and wouldn't eat it even when it was placed right next to her.
3: Obliviate: Not going to happy to my sweet Rose.

He glanced at his watch as he wandered back to the front of the room.
Was that the time already?! "YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES LEFT!" he announced.

Bel shot a big smile at the professor and then turned her attention back to practicing. She was ready to give the spell a go on the mouse now she thought. Maybe. She let the toy mouse out of the cage and took her turn with it in the maze.

"Mismemini!" Bel put the incantation with the thought bubble with a cross wand movement aiming at the mouse. And....

...... nothing happened. The mouse just started through the maze, stopping at one of the earlier cheesecake smears. Why didn't it work? Bel stared at it in consternation, then took the mouse out and handed it to one of her table mates.

Why hadn't it done anything? She racked her brains trying to figure out what was going on. Hmm. Bel idly wrote down a few notes about it.

"Thanks Professor!" she grinned, feeling very proud of her work. And then she noticed the smiling She-Snake and her flirtatious wave to Ace. A frown appeared on her face as she noted the Slytherin's smug smile.

Hmph.

She rolled her eyes and looked away from the younger year. Nope. She was not going to get into that. The notion of it all only upset her more. But seriously... when did she get so jealous? Vi turned and glanced over at the younger blonde. She was pretty and well Vi was.... Vi. Stop it.

The Gryffindor Prefect turned her attention back to her mouse and the spells she had yet to accomplish, trying her hardest to push the thoughts away from her... but she still couldn't help but feel slightly preoccupied. Thus given her mindset, she went back to practicing the memory charm not wishing to risk performing the Memory Charm incorrectly. She took a deep breath and cleared her mind for once and all, forgetting the comments and the reactions of others. Blank. Though she did hear the mouse in front of her scurrying about, trying to get through the maze.

"Obliviate," she whispered, pointing her wand at the mouse as she drew a question mark. The shuffling stopped and the mouse sat for a moment before panicking as to why there were walls closing in on them. It darted out of the maze but before it could make it out, Vi drew the thought bubble and finished with an X as she spoke, "Mismemini" With this one command, she altered the mouse's memory by showing it how to get through the maze. The mouse halted its path and then turned back towards the end, continuing to pursue its course.

That false memory charm hadn't worked for her, but Bel wanted to move on to something else since she couldn't figure out what had gone wrong and needed more thinking time anyway. Maybe it would come to her?

She didn't think obliviate was a spell that was anywhere in the realm of possibility for her, but she was hopeful about confundus. Question mark and point at the target she wasn't going to forget that wand movement because it amused her. Bel gave it a few goes, the hooking shape and then the point that was like the dot.

Yes, toy mouse, she was going to confuse you so bad. Ahem.

Questionmarkshaaaaape.... "Confundo!" The toy mouse twitched a little and seemed to look around unsure of where it was.... but then it continued on.

Well. At least that was a better result than the false memory one. Hmm.

While Emmalyn waited for Night to run the next race, she sat down with her parchment and notes to complete the writing portion of the assignment. She hoped her conclusions were correct and the professor really was okay with them not trying out Obliviate. It had been a long class and emotional class for her and Rose. She was ready to stop putting her little friend through experiments.

Quote:
NOTES: Emmalyn Walsh Hufflepuff 1st year
Memory charms on mice:
1: confundus- Rose was confused into not knowing how to navigate the maze after the charm was placed on her. When offered the cheesecake, she still wanted to eat it.
2: Mismemini- Rose was not interested in even trying the maze. She no longer liked the cheesecake and wouldn't eat it even when it was placed right next to her.
3: Obliviate: Not going to happy to my sweet Rose.

Conclusion:
The confundus charm is effective in making the subject confused, but they still could end up figuring out how to get to the goal. It slows them down and would give you time to either get away or perform another spell on them. The False Memory charm appears to be better at completely making them change their minds and not want to look for it anymore. This would be good if you were going to be in trouble and wanted to make someone or something remember an event that didn’t really happen, or remember it in a way that’s better for you.

Right. He could do it. Because professor Marchand said so.

Focusing again on his target, Daehyun traced his wand in the correct movement and, focusing on making the mouse believe the cheesecake was elsewhere, he said, "Mismemini!" Anxiously, he watched the purple mouse move around the maze, and until one point it seemed to go on the right path again, so he sighed dejectedly as he leaned back against the chair. Except...

IT WENT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!

Grinning at his accomplishment, he guided the mouse towards the right direction to the cheesecake because he felt bad for the little guy, and while the mouse munched happily, he jotted down some notes, which gave the mouse enough time to remember the correct path once again.

To finish off, he added another piece of cheesecake in the same place in the maze, and then pointed his wand at the mouse and said, "Confundo!" to follow its new behaviour. The mouse seemed... dazed. It went one way and another, made one wrong turn and returned on the right path... which was enough to give him a good idea of how the spells worked, so he finished off his notes.

SPOILER!!: Notes
Mismemini plants false memories in the target's head, things that have never happened (e.g. made the mouse believe the cheesecake was elsewhere than it thought), while Confundo messes with the target's memories and alternates them (e.g. the mouse was dazed and couldn't remember the correct path).

There. All done.

Harriet smiled at the professor's compliment. She was always happy to get praise from the teachers. It made her know that she was doing good, and that made her happy. "Thank you for Professor" She murmured with a smile. She knew she was good at that charm. She'd used it a couple of times during the duelling club when it had been around. As a sixth year she had quite a good set of spells now. So she was pretty content. She did like charms though. The blonde was never against learning new spells. it was good to not know everything. That was the whole point of class, to learn. For now though, she was going to move onto one of the other spells. It would be good to see how they affected the mouse too.

She cast a non-verbal finite over the mouse, ending the confundus charm. She wanted to make sure it wasn't confused when she tried a new spell. Hattie decided to try the false memory charm. She wanted to see the affect that had. She made a few notes of how she thought it would work, deciding she thought it would make the mouse struggle to find the cheesecake even more. Then she picked up her wand, performing the wand movement, and said "'Mismemini" over the mouse. She'd made the mouse think that the cheesecake was in a different section of the maze, remembering differently from when it had been in the maze previously.

She then watched to see how the mouse would react, hoping it would match her initial thoughts.

Bel wasn't sure if she should attempt the spells again, given they hadn't really worked, or if she should just write about what she had done so far. She decided to start writing and to have another go once her table mates were done with their turn with the mouse. Best to share after all!

The mouse hadn't much responded to the confundus either, even if there had been a few seconds of it seeming confused. She'd meant for it to be confused, but it hadn't been enough.

.... meant for it. She'd thought about it being confused. Really had her intent on point... but the False memory charm? She hadn't really thought about what the false memory should have been. She hadn't put that bit of thought into the spell! Realising now what had gone wrong, Bel started scrawling out her notes with more enthusiasm.

Quote:
Bel Macindoe, Third Year Hufflepuff.

Mismemini - False Memory Charm
Nothing seemed to happen when I cast this. But I think its because I didn't have the right intent in that I wasn't all that focused on specifically what the false memory should be. Maybe something happened but it wasn't relevant to the maze or the cheesecake. If I try this spell again I'll think super hard about specific memory implants and compare different ones and how effective they might be.

Confundo - Confundus Charm.
This worked a little bit, in that the toy mouse seemed to stop and not really remember what it was doing. I think the spell is just too hard for me to do properly, but if I worked at it I would focus on the mouse forgetting how walls work so that it would get confused and smoosh itself into the walls.
I wouldn't do that to a real mouse though, that would be cruel.

Conclusion: Both of these spells really need super good intent. I think that was my problem that I was a bit distracted and not all that confident.
I didn't try the Obliviate because that one seems even harder to me.
I think the False Memory Charm is probably a better choice for a situation like this one because even if the mouse is confused it could probably eventually find its way through the maze or to the cheesecake by sense of smell or something like that. False memory could help counteract the mouse's instincts and senses a bit better maybe?
Finished with her notes on the spells Bel looked at her table's maze again and wondered if she should give some of the spells another turn now that she had realized about what hadn't worked.

There were just many things that Professor Marchand had mentioned about all kinds of charm that worked on manipulating someone's mind... At least they were not going to demonstrate it to each other because if something was wrong... The victim probably would end up having an irreversible amnesia. After Diandra finished scribbling those important information about the memory charm, she grabbed her wand and practiced the charm. Probably she should try false-memory charm first.

Draw a bubble-thought shape, make an X at the end. Concentratiing hard.

"Mismemini." The badger tried casting the charm on her toy mouse that she had placed inside the maze but well... She didn't know if it's working or not since there was no reaction on it. Okay, maybe she needed to concentrate harder. Repeating the same movement, Diandra focused on the charm and put the thought that the cheesecake was on the other side of the maze. "Mismemini." Second attempt was... not that bad honestly because now she saw her mouse walked exploring the maze. That was a good reaction, right?

Okay time to try the false memory charm. She had successfully confused the mouse, but now what? There wasn't enough time to wait until the effects of the confundus charm wore off, but what if the sixth year instilled within the mouse a false memory that it would know where to go for the cheesecake? It kind of made sense, because it was confused and couldn't remember the path and yet it also once knew the path but it was just disoriented.

Bubble shape and then an X. "Mismemini" Skylar said, her wand aimed at the little mouse as she filled it with the concentration of the path it was meant to take. It was just like a false memory, but not really, because it already once had the memory, so it was kind of positive too? Eyes watching on the fake mouse expectantly, she watched and waited and there it was ... the little mouse scurried along the path, no longer bumping into walls but appropriately found the cheesecake, happily nibbling away at it.

Until, "Mismemini" she cast again and suddenly without warning, the mouse backed away, because she had given it the false memory that the cheesecake was poisoned and to not eat it. She smiled to herself, making mental notes that with the false memory, she could create something that it already it knew to be true, but also create the illusion of something that wasn't true at all. Definitely interesting ... in how she could use it too to counter the confundus charm, but not really.

Gaston kept an eye on the class for the remaining few minutes of the activity. He returned Miss Valla's grin as he watched her attempt the False Memory Charm. By the way the mouse was acting, he wasn't sure it had worked, but it was a great start. "Excellent work, Miss Valla," he said.

Miss Salim and Miss Macindoe appeared to be struggling a bit with the False Memory Charm, but that was to be expected. It was a difficult spell to master, and after all, this was all part of the learning process. Each of the girls received an encouraging smile form the professor. "Great effort, Miss Salim! You too,
Miss Macindoe!"
His smile grew even wider as he saw Miss Macindoe cast the Confundus Charm.

It looked like Miss Paton and Miss Diggory were having some luck with the False Memory Charm, and Gaston beamed at each of them in turn. "Nice use of Mismemini, Miss Paton and Miss Diggory! As a matter of interest, what did you make your mice remember?"

Mr. Yoon appeared to be improving with the spellwork now, which the professor was very pleased to see. "See? I knew you could do it!" he said with a very approving smile. "That was much better, Mr, Yoon."

Gaston almost laughed to himself as he watched Miss Walsh and Miss Dixon with their mice. He had to admit, racing the mice was a creative way to test the effects of the spells! "So, who's winning the race?" he asked the girls.

He smiled as Miss Holden thanked him, but his smile turned into a full fledged beam when he saw her attempt not only the False Memory Charm but the regular Memory Charm as well. "Nice spellwork, Miss Holden! Congratulations on casting Obliviate!" he said.

His gaze turned to Miss Cambridge. It looked like more congratulations were in order, but before he could speak, she asked him a question. He thought for a moment. "That's an interesting question, Miss Cambridge," he said. "That would depend on the intent behind the spells. The one with the stronger intent would produce a clearer memory, thus making the memory created by the other spell fuzzy and dream-like. If the spells are about equal in intent, the more recent one usually overrides the effects of the first."

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Miss McNally with her head down on the table. Now that had him concerned! He was at her side immediately. "Is everything alright, Miss McNally?" he asked quietly, eyeing her sympathetically.

A minute or two later, he checked his watch again. Class was over. "TIME IS UP!" he announced, moving back to the front of the classroom. "Wonderful job today, all of you! I'm so pleased with your progress!" Oh, and there was one more thing to tell them. "You may take any leftover cheesecake with you and keep your mouse, if you wish. The animation spell will wear off in a few hours, but if you want me to permanently animate your mouse, stay behind and see me! Class dismissed!"

OOC: Thanks for coming! I'll leave the thread open for ABOUT 24 MORE HOURS (6:00 PM EST Jan. 31) for those who want their mice animated. ^_^

Night decided to get a permanent charm on Minty, partly because she knew Emmalyn would for Rose. She went up to the front of the room after grabbing another piece of chocolate chip cheesecake.

"Professor, how does the animation charm work? Like, it's not really alive, is it?" She thought of something. "Wait, is it kind of like chocolate frogs? Or at least the one we used in class, the temporary one?"

Extra credit for bringing up the chocolate frog charm? Probably not, but Night was curious about the spell either way. She thought about her hat from Muggle Studies. "Also, is there any way I can animate the dogs on my hat, Professor? And is it the same charm?" She held the hat out to him to inspect.

"Minty won the first race, Night is running the second race, I'll let you know the outcome soon." She smiled and turned back to the maze to see how Night was doing with the mice.

"Sir, when class is over, I would like for Rose to be charmed long term." It was the best part of the class. Getting to keep Rose was the perfect end to charms. That in addition to extra cheesecake. Cheesecake was one of her favorite treats. Almost as good as cupcakes. She would take Rose up front as soon as the race was over. "Hey, Night, are you keeping Minty? I think the two of them would like to play together."

She heard Professor Marchand speak to various students about their work from his spot where’d he’d been perched. But suddenly his voice was louder and he was beside her, a tone of obvious concern in his voice. Great…just great, Cassie mused to herself as she straightened back up in her seat. She certainly hadn’t wanted to draw any attention to herself, especially since she hadn’t been having the best of luck in the end.

“Um…fine,” she said, turning her attention to the man, one of her favorite professors. “Everything’s fine,” the seventh year added, trying to make everything truly seem fine. At least with his next pronouncement to the class as a whole she could mildly relax. Class was over and she could just push this all behind her...for now. Who knows if and when it would ever come up again in her realm, especially given NEWTs were known to drag up just about anything one had been in taught in the previous seven years.

But for now she was just slowly getting up from her seat and grabbing her notes and such to slip into her school bag. That's all she was concentrating on.

Daehyun beamed at professor Marchand's compliment. He knew he was far from being good, but hearing nice words only motivated him to practice more after class to hear better words later on.

He didn't hesitate to pop another piece of cheesecake in his mouth when his Head of House had told them so and, picking up his bag and cradling the mouse comfortably in his hands, he walked to the professor. "Professor? I-I was wondering if-if you could help me with the animation spell? I'd like to learn to cast it myself." Because it was beyond adorable to turn a toy mouse into a very much alive one. "Oh! And, if they're permanently animated, do we care for them as if they were real mice?" Except, you know, purple and born a toy. Maybe he could try some colour changing spells to make it look more real.

And class was over. Hattie was a little disappointed. She had enjoyed this lesson. It was fun, not too complicated, and thus she had really enjoyed it. So she was a little sad that it was over. It was nice to have a little bit of a laid back lesson, especially after all of the stress of last year. But she was happy, and now was ready to go have a chill out in the common room. Not before she grabbed herself some more cheesecake. It looked yummy, and she was feeling a little peckish. She was going to be leaving her mouse behind. She really did not want that, even if it would stop being animated. She didn't need it, and so was going to be leaving it behind.

But back to the question she'd been asked. "Oh. I made the mouse think the cheesecake was somewhere else in the maze" She said with a smile, before going to collect herself some more cheesecake. Yum. That would be a nice afternoon snack. And now to go. "Good bye Professor. It was a great lesson! And then she left out of the door, heading back down to the hufflepuff common room.

“Thank you Professor,” Kye acknowledged, trying to pretend that he hadn’t slightly startled her. She had been so focused on little mouse that she didn’t hear him come up behind her! She set the mouse down while she wrote her notes, letting him relax… poor guy.

Next of course, it was time to try out Mismemini… Kye had not used this spell before so she took some time to practice after writing her notes. First off, who decided these incantations because this was a tongue twister! She had to keep thinking of it as Miss-me-mini or else she would switch the n and m around. Oy vey. “Mismemini. Mismemini. Mismemini. Mismemini,” she practiced. Next, she practiced the wand movements a couple of times, making sure to do the X and not the tail. In her head, Kye imagined a completely different course, zooming through it double speed. She imagined being the mouse and finding the cheesecake in the back corner of the maze.

Keeping this in mind, Kye picked up her little friend, waved her wand, and tried out the spell. She wished a little thought bubble or something would actually appear to show that it had worked. She placed the mouse in the maze, same as before, and released him. Kye raised an eyebrow, thoroughly intrigued to find out if the spell had worked or not.

The mouse immediately sped off to get the cheesecake. Whoa! Slow down there buddy. He followed the course that Kye had thought up for him, getting caught in a dead end and coming to a halt. He probably felt more confused now than he did when she had used Confundo. He was almost pacing in front of the dead end, trying to find a way through. Finally he gave up, and tried speeding off in a different direction. You could see his frustration at the situation growing every time he hit a dead end, and not even 30 seconds before class was over, the mouse finally found his prize. Good Glory, that timing! Way to go little mouse!

SPOILER!!: Notes!

My expectation is for the mouse to do best with the Confundus Charm, and worst after False Memory.

*Observations*
Confundus Charm - He is much more hesitant, as can be expected. There is more backtracking than in previous runs... After a few setbacks, he has made it! Time: 00:01:47.

Obliviate - He knows what he is looking for, and is less hesitant in his decisions. He has to relearn the maze, yes, but he shows determination. Time: 00:01:39... He has already ruined my hypothesis.

False Memory Charm – He was much quicker… but in all the wrong directions. He is showing an increase in agitation, and seems more confused than with previous charms. Time: 00:04:21

Conclusion – Originally I had thought that he would get past Confundo the easiest, considering the fact that he would still have a recollection of his route. In actuality, the mouse was 8 seconds faster after I erased his memory of the dessert's location.. The second half of my hypothesis was correct, however. Using the False Memory Charm caused many delays, and ending in more than the other two times combined!

Kye couldn't help but immediately decide to keep her little mouse animated FOREVER!
What a great idea! She cleaned up her station and approached the professor with her little purple mouse. Since she couldn't take Edie to class, maybe she could sneak this guy in. Oh... he would definitely need a name.

"I'm interested in making him permanently animated, Professor!" she said excitedly.
Kye imagined using the spell to make everything in the castle come to life... just because! Insert evil laughter here.

Oh the class was over?

She was just getting started, but she knew it would come to end eventually and now she could head out and meet up with Andi or maybe James. Looking at her partners for the day she gave a smile, "Bye boys, thanks for working with me." Not that they had a choice and who wouldn't want to work with her. She gave Ronan a playful grin thinking about his answer to the question, her eyes had a certain challenge look to them as if to say I'm up for it.

Turning she took her mouse towards the professor, "I would love to have mine be animated for good sir. I'm not allowed to have real pets at home, so this would be adorable to have." Though she was going to try for a puppy for Christmas.

Skylar glanced up from her diligent note taking and comparison to hear Professor Marchand complimenting her. Beaming at him, she considered his question. "The first time, I gave it the memory of where to go. I figured it was confused and didn't know where to go, so refreshed its memory, but then the second time I actually instilled the memory that the cheesecake was poisoned so it wouldn't want to eat it." Also, she was curious about Jessa's question and listened about the intent that the Charms professor spoke of. Well that actually made a lot of sense.

Class was over and no mouse or cheesecake for her. She didn't need the bloated feeling that cheesecake would give her; not with her first Hogwarts quidditch match so near. And she already had a niffler down at the creatures barn, which while she was sure that Snitch would enjoy the snack, she didn't care to feed him an animated toy mouse.

"Thanks for the lesson, Professor!" Also, she'd be working on that memory charm at another date.

Gaston listened carefully as Miss Paton answered his question. He smiled, giving her an approving nod. "Ah, yes. Simple yet effective. Nicely done, Miss Paton!" he said. He watched her go, slightly surprised she hadn't taken her mouse with her. "You're quite welcome!
Goodbye, miss Paton!"

It seemed Miss Diggory had a different false memory in mind, and her answer earned her a beam from the professor. He probably wouldn't have thought to make the mouse think the cake was poisoned. "What a creative solution, Miss Diggory! I'm impressed," he said. "You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!"

Gaston raised a skeptical eyebrow as Miss McNally said everything was fine. He didn't entirely believe it, but he couldn't force her to tell him what was bothering her. He nodded, giving her a sympathetic smile as she got up. "Have a nice rest of the day, Miss McNally!"

Then he focused his attention on the group of students (Emmalyn, Night, Kye, Zita, and Daniel) who wanted their mice animated. He turned first to Miss Walsh, as she'd been the first to show interest in keeping her mouse. "This won't hurt Rose," he promised, pointing his wand at the little pink mouse. "Animate permanens." He nodded in reply to Miss Atwater and Miss Valla's requests. "Of course, ladies," he said, and he performed the spell again on each ot the Slytherins' mice.

Goodness, Miss Dixon certainly had a lot of questions! Gaston couldn't help but smile at her curiosity. "No, the mouse isn't exactly alive; it just moves and behaves like a real mouse," he replied. "The animation charm can only cause its target to move in a certain level - or in more complex cases, give it a small level of sentience - not actually give it life." He smiled. "Yes, I suppose the spell I used at the beginning of class is similar to the one used on chocolate frogs." He performed the permanent animation spell on her little green mouse, then turned his attention to the dogs on the hat he was shown. "You can,
but it would probably be best to use a simpler animation charm than the one used on the mice. Otherwise, the dogs on your hat would behave a bit too much like real dogs and be difficult to control. If you want to learn more about animation charms, you're welcome to come to my office sometime,
MIss Dixon."

Gaston lifted his wand, poised to animate Mr. Yoon's mouse, but stopped as the boy mentioned doing it himself. "Of course, Mr. Yoon," he said with a smile. "Just come to my office later, and I'll teach you." The next question made him smile. "No, that's not necessary. These mice can eat or drink if you want to feed and water them, but they won't die if you don't because they were never really alive. It's probably a good idea to keep them in a cage, though, to protect them from any cats who might want to play with animated mouse."

OOC: This has been so much fun, but I have to close the thread now.
If your charries have more questions, just send them to Gaston's office.
