Default Office of Professor Hirsch

If offices were meant to show the essence of someone's personality than boy oh boy, did this room show what Roderik Hirsch was like. Everything was sleek, from the orange tables to the seats and even to the teal coloured desks. There was a certain gleam to everything, as if it had been well polished in advance.

Upon entering the room, the first thing you see is the desk sitting towards the middle of the room. Sitting upon the desk are a number of things: pieces of parchment, quills, ink, your everyday mundane wizarding equipment. What wasn't mundane was the picture of the Hirscch family gathered together at their most recent holiday, where everyone had been forced to wear ugly jumpers. (Thanks Ma)

The one thing the office seems to be in abundance of are chest of drawers. They seem to be everywhere from along a side of a wall to behind the desk and underneath the desk itself. There are also a few Defence books stacked up along the shelves on the left side of the room. Ask nicely, and you might get to borrow some. Might.

Hirsch himself can usually be found sitting behind the desk with his feet propped up onto the desk and shuffling through some piece of parchment or another.

Please make sure you've posted in the Seating Area first and have been told that you can enter, either by Hirsch or by me.

Maybe that was why he was staring at the back of the door with a confused look on his face.

Shaking his head, Hirsch picked up the wand sitting on his desk and gave it a flick towards the door. The door swung open slowly, revealing the Defence professor leaning back on his seat with a cup of coffee cupped in his hands. It was needed to kick start the day, after all.

"Come in!"

The longer Kirk stared at the mural, the more curious he got. It was likely looped sure, but every now and then there was a slight change in the dragon's behavior but the fairy once again tricked it. Before he knew it, he saw the door out of the corner of his eye slowly open followed by Professor Hirsch's summoning him in.

Kirk then entered, greeted by the familiar furnishings right before seeing his Head lounging with his drink. Bad time? No way, he would've left a do not disturb sign or something. Maybe.

"Hey Professor, how're things?" He greeted as sat down in front of him. Prior to the feast it hadn't been that long ago since he saw his Head. His Uncle Justin's twins birthday party was among the few opportunities he got to catch up with in between school. Briefly remembering what his parents suggested he do first. "Thanks for this by the way." Pinching part of the robe right above his sparkily badge lifting it to signify. It surprised Kirk, especially since it meant he was the first in his family for a number of generations to be prefected. But that wasn't all he was here for.

"So.. it's my O.W.L year now and I think I got most my scheduling okay with handling the upcoming work." He usually wasn't a planner, but if he were to pick up a new habit, keeping up with his work while having fun seemed to be best with him. "I'm not too sure career wise what I'd like to do though still, something with Astronomy or Divination would be cool.. but I was also curious about the work for Healing if all else fails as backup." He had to have a few other options as well, but he was really curious about his Head's thoughts.

It looked crazy but, then again, that's how lesson planning went.

He hardly registered his surroundings and, if it wasn't for the pause he took to rub his eyes, he might not have even noticed the knock on the door. Adjusting his glasses back in place, he called out, "Come in!" The Defence Professor settled back onto the edge of his desk, still frowning slightly at the board but, this time, intrigued as to who the visitor was.

Kyle made his way into the office and stopped at the sight of the board. It looked like the work of a mad man. He'd seen his father do something similar, but it didn't make sense to him then, either. He asked about it once, and all his father said was that it was work. Oh well. He probably wouldn't be able to figure out the Professor's board, either. He finally looked back at Professor Hirsch and smiled slightly. "Hello, Professor. How does it feel to be back?" It was only polite to inquire, after all. And he certainly didn't want to be seen as rude.

"I'm not too sure career wise what I'd like to do though still, something with Astronomy or Divination would be cool.. but I was also curious about the work for Healing if all else fails as backup." He had to have a few other options as well, but he was really curious about his Head's thoughts.
The sight of the student to walk in brought an instant smile to the man's face. If he was completely honest, he did expect this to happen sometime, whether the boy came to find him or he went to find the boy. Still, there was a smile on his face, especially at the sight of a certain badge pinned to his robes.

But first. "Hey, Kirk. Things are good, it's nice to be back in the swing of things." This came with a bunch of markings but you couldn't have it all. "How are things with you? How are you liking that new badge?" At this, he nodded at the blue badge. It was hard to think of the badge going to someone other than Rooney Bronwyn, especially seeing as the boy had had it for so long, but he was glad with the choice he'd made. Very glad. "You're welcome. You've deserved it and I am very proud of the progress you've made." Smile.

In hindsight, he should've known that the badge wasn't all that Kirk wanted to see him about. OWLs, scheduling and career options were all huge topics and so, Hirsch sat up a little straighter to prepare himself for this. "First of all, I'm glad you've found a balance between your OWL preparations and your Prefect duties. It can be tough to juggle both, along with any other activities you might want to take part in," Both social and academic. "But the fact that you've found that balance and are preparing yourself so early on in the year is a good sign. Well done."

Next, career options. While the Prefect spoke, Hirsch picked up his wand and directed it towards one of the many drawers lining the side of his office. This one, containing a bunch of important looking files, slid open and one of the files flew out and landed right on the desk in front of Hirsch. The name at the top told him that it was Kirk's and he flipped it open to the correct page: one with the Ravenclaw's most recent grades. "Astronomy, Divination and Healing are all very different career paths." Just saying. "Healing itself has a wide range of options and possibilities, depending on what area you want to specialise. You will need either an Outstanding or Exceeds Expectations in Charms, Herbology, Transfiguration, Potions and, of course, Defence Against the Dark Arts at NEWT level. Personally, I am very pleased with your Defence grade and all I can tell you is to keep going at the rate you're going and you should be fine." Smile. "Healing also requires extra study in Wizarding University as well where you'll learn most of the basic treatments as well as think about which area you want to specialise in. It's a lot of hard work and extra hours, mad hours for those that work in St Mungos, but if that's something you're willing to do, then that sounds like a great career path for you."

Breathe.

"You can go a number of ways with Astronomy. One option is, of course, the Ministry of Magic. They have a Space Chamber there where the Astronomers who work there look at and track celestial bodies as well as look to investigate how magic has evolved in the universe over time. There are also Physicists who work there, if you don't want to go directly down the path of Astronomy and want to combine it with Physics. You will need an E in Astronomy at NEWT level for both of these and I'm guessing good grades in Charms won't be bad as well." Would Muggle Studies be a good option here? Maybe. "You could also look at working for a Muggle space station like NASA but be warned, that requires a lot of effort and dedication; they take the best of the best. If not, you could become an Astronomer and work at observatories up and down the country as well as oversees." The option was his.

"If you want to do Divination...." Hmm... "As always, the Ministry of Magic is always an option for this. The Department of Mysteries has a Hall of Prophecy which requires an E in Divination at OWL level. Their exact role is said to be a bit of a mystery but I'm guessing that they work closely with the prophecies places there, whether it's observing them or collecting information about them." He really didn't know. "If you're good with foretelling the future, you could always start up or work for a Tarot reading business but, well, personally, I think you could do much better." No offence to Tarot readers but he couldn't see Kirk going down that career path. "Divination is slightly more limited in options than the other two but there is always the option of teaching it, if you're willing." Which wasn't a bad career option either. Just saying.

"All of them would require some further studying, to strengthen your opportunities later on." It wasn't for everyone but university was still a good option. "So which one sounds the best to you? And are there any subjects you're currently struggling with?"

The sound of the door opening was enough to, finally, divert his attention away from the board. Constant vigilance, you know. Keeping your back to an open door wasn't a good option for self-defence, after all.

Not that he needed it in the slightest considering who was standing there. "Hello, Kyle," he said, smiling at the boy and turning away from the board completely to take a seat at his desk, "Surprisingly, it feels good to be back. Summer is always a good thing but you can't have too much of a good thing, can you?" And he did enjoy his job to the extent that he had been looking forward to coming back here. "How do you feel being back? Ready for your second year?"

"I'm so totally and completely ready!" Kyle beamed as he spoke. He'd been greatly looking forward to returning to school, and especially for DADA classes. It wasn't his best subject, but he enjoyed it quite a bit, and spending time after classes with the Professor didn't hurt on that any.

"I've been practicing my martial arts and wandless magic all summer. I still can't beat my older siblings, but my dad introduced me to baklava during the summer!" He stopped, blinking, quite certain he didn't say the right thing. "Oh no! That's something you eat, isn't it? I meant..." He stopped and thought a while. "Krav maga. That's it. And then I still can't really do wandless magic yet, but I can feel it in my arms, my hands, and my fingertips. It's just like... like it won't come out yet. I get that feeling with three spells now. So I'm really really really looking forward to learning more from you this year. I'd like to do our after-school classes again."

The next knock that came on his door was so faint, so timid, that Hirsch almost missed it. In fact, the man paused during his marking and looked up at the door, wondering whether there had been a knock or whether he'd imagined the whole thing. It wouldn't be a far-fetched thought, would it? And he wasn't exactly the type of person who would be pranked - he did think of himself as a type of professor who was slightly too cool for that.

But this didn't stop him from getting up from his seat to see if he was right or not. Pulling the door open slightly, he poked his head through the other side and looked up and down the-

"Isa?" Surprised? He certainly was. "I- come in, come in." He held the door open, hoping that she didn't have another question about why people did bad things. If so, he might need more coffee for a conversation like that.

OOC: GRIFFIIIIIN You're welcome to post in the office thread now ^^

It was weird that she was so nervous about talking to Professor Hirsch. Usually the fourth year Hufflepuff was very bubbly and extroverted, happy to talk to anybody. There was something about the subject taught by Professor Hirsch that dampened her spirits though. Maybe that was why she was feeling hesitant about the conversation to come, or maybe it was the embarrassment over her poor marks in the class the past few years. At first when the door didn't open Isa considered leaving with the knowledge that she had tried to meet with the professor but hadn't gone through with it, but before she could actually leave the door finally opened.

Isa got up from the waiting area sofa and walked overto Professor Hirsch. "Hello, Professor Hirsch." she entered the office, waiting until she was inside to speak to the professor. "I've come to speak to you about my performance in defense against the dark arts. I know I haven't done very well in your class in the past and I thought I didn't want to know about the scary dark stuff or anything violent, but I've realised that I do need to know how to defend myself from the very real dangers in the world and there will be OWLs coming up for me next year and those are important exams that will eventually have an impact on what universities accept me and that kind of important stuff. Isa looked at Professor Hirsch, her face turning slightly red as she spoke. It was sort of uncomfortable admitting her struggles with the subject to a professor who she was not particularly close to. She almost wanted to cry about defense against the dark arts ."So I guess what I'm saying is I want to learn... And, um, I might need a tutor for this subject to help me catch up with some of the things I haven't done well on before and help me progress in my defence against the dark arts studies this year." Whew. That was out of the way now. Admitting that was the hard part. Now she just had to worry about what Professor Hirsch would say about that.

There was something about that level of enthusiasm that made Hirsch smile. Enthusiastic students were always a bonus and made teaching a lot more enjoyable. Plus, it was nice to see that a student still enjoyed the aspect of learning, even if it came with the stress of studying and grades. "It's nice to see you so enthusiastic about this." Really.

The sound of martial arts and wandless magic piqued his interest, especially because he'd spend countless hours as a kid doing martial arts, but something else caught his attention first.

.......... Baklava?

An amused grin spread across his face. "Baklava tastes very nice, by the way. You should try it sometime, if you haven't already." A little too sweet for him but still nice. "How was Krav Maga? Did you enjoy it?" Important to know, really.

But the mention of his progress with wandless magic made Hirsch sit up slightly. "Really?" he asked, his eyebrows shooting up, "That is huge! The fact that you can feel it in your fingertips is still a huge step forward, a sign that things are going in the right direction." If he needed the reassurance. "Well done! And this is exactly the kind of feeling you should be getting, even with nonverbal magic. All you'll need to do now is direct that magic and drive it out." Which was much easier said than done.

"I'd love to continue the after-school classes. Which area do you want to look into this time? Martial arts or wandless magic?"

When she entered the room, Hirsch closed the door behind her and turned to look at her, gesturing to the seat in front of his desk as he did so. Might as well get comfortable, yes? Especially since this talk sounded like a heavy one.

While she talked, the Defence Professor moved to sit in his desk behind his desk and listened to what it is she had to say. Was the topic a heavy one? Yes. But it was one he should've expected by now, especially since, as she put it, her performance was probably not as good as it could be. Something that had very little to do with her knowledge or intelligence, from the way he saw it.

Now, how should he put this lightly? "There...... is room for improvement but that doesn't mean that improvement won't happen." Was that a good attempt? "I teach about the dark arts because personally, I think it's important for you to know about the dark arts themselves, understand them and it's only then that you'll know how best to defend yourselves against them. I don't want you to learn just for the sake of an exam or a grade; it's important to know this for your own survival in this world." Pause. "It's upsetting, and I understand that but sadly, not everyone or everything in this world is going to be as nice as you are." It was.... a fact. "Just make sure it doesn't tarnish your good side."

Now, onto the next part. "I have to say, I'm really glad you still want to learn. If you want, I could teach you outside of classes to help you with anything you're struggling with and make sure your defensive magic is better than ever. What do you think?" Or did she want an external tutor?

"I have tried baklava once before. I do like it, though we don't tend to get it. I'd like to have it more often, honestly." Kyle couldn't help smiling. He liked sweets. Even the blood lollies at the sweets store that he'd tried before. Though, Jace thought he was a little strange for liking it.

"I do enjoy Krav Maga, actually," Kyle said as he thought about it. "It's an interesting form of martial arts, I think. Dad has us learning about both the defense aspect of it as well as the apprehension aspect, in case we'd like to become aurors one day, though I'm not really certain what I want to do. My brother joined the Ministry hoping to become an auror, and they put him in a different department. Though he's not talking at all about what he does. In any case, I don't know if I want to be an auror or not, but I'm finding I like Defense a lot more as I'm learning about it." Even if it wasn't his best class. Yet.

And then, his steps toward performing wandless magic were reassured that he was doing the right thing. Kyle bounced a little with a "Yay!" Then remembered himself and cleared his throat, calming himself down. He was honestly trying to be less hyper. "I'm glad I seem to be moving in the right direction."

So, what did he want to work on this term? Honestly, he wanted to work on wandless magic some more, since coaching might be good for finally getting that first spell to work. But he had made plans that this term he would be working on physical defense. He crossed his arms and bowed his head as he thought long and deep about it. This was an important decision, after all. But the dummies would always be there for him to fight against, but coaching for wandless magic would be harder to obtain. He'd practiced over the summer, but wasn't quite able to get there and he didn't know if that was a fault of not having tutoring, or if he just wasn't ready yet. He finally decided...

"I think I want further lessons on wandless magic. I can practice my martial arts against the dummies, after all. But I think I've gotten as far as I can practicing on my own over the summer with wandless magic."

Occasionally, the man would stop to scribble something down on the parchment, whether it be a tiny footnote or an entire paragraph of information, before settling back to the reading again.

Nothing seemed to drive the man out of the reading. Nothing, apart from a small knock on his door.

Blinking out of his stance, Hirsch glanced up at the door and stared at it, as if he could see through it and see who it could be on the other side. But seeing as he couldn't, there was only one thing for it: "Come in!" he called, taking his feet off the desk and sitting up properly.

OOC: LISAPATH You're welcome to post in the office thread now ^^
Cameron had barely touched the chair when he heard Professor Hirsch's voice beckoning him into the office. That was fast. Fortunately it seemed he'd come at a not so busy time of the day. Or maybe people just generally didn't visit Hirsch that often. Honestly, up until today Cameron had kept his visits to professors to a bare minimum too.

Quickly getting up again, he then walked back over to the door and opened it."Hello, professor." Cameron greeted him with a smile as he closed the door behind him. Now, how to start this? Was he allowed to sit down? "I have a Defense Against the Dark Arts unrelated question I thought you might be able to help me with." That sounded like a good start, no?

Plus, it gave the professor an out in case he didn't want to help him with that.

"I do enjoy Krav Maga, actually," Kyle said as he thought about it. "It's an interesting form of martial arts, I think. "It's hard to find places that do it, especially up here." Because Hogsmeade sure didn't have Turkish food. "Maybe you could ask the house elves if they know how to make it." Or give them a recipe to work off of.

The description of Krav Manga was interesting but what intrigued him the most was the mention about auror work. Maybe, with all their talks about defensive magic and martial arts, he should've seen this coming before now but it still came as a nice surprise. "Learning both the defence and offence will work in your favour. Any form of defence requires you to think a few steps ahead. Prepare yourself for what your opponent might want to do so that it doesn't throw you off track." Was he talking from experience? Maybe. "I'm glad you're enjoying Defence," he said, giving the boy a smile, "It's still a bit early to decide for sure what you want to do later on so no pressure. If you want to be an Auror, that's great! I can link you up with some Aurors in the Ministry." Especially since he was.... close with one in particular. "But it's also not the only path you can take in terms of Defence." Something to think about?

That little burst of excitement was sweet. Really. Hirsch shot the Slytherin an amused grin but said nothing of it. From the reaction, it seemed as though the boy was embarrassed by it and the last thing he probably needed right now was to mention it. "It's nice to see you so dedicated to your extra studies."

The Defence Professor remained silent while Kyle contemplated his choice. It didn't matter to Hirsch in the slightest, and he didn't mind switching up what he taught over the term, but this was down to personal preference, really. At his answer, he gave the boy a nod and said, "That's a very smart decision. Plus, it's more difficult to try and do magic at home when.... Hogwarts says that you're not supposed to. A part of you might not have wanted to." Not that he was telling him off, it was just something to consider. Psychological reasons.

He'd just managed to sit up and place his book on the desk when the door opened. His eyes flew up and..........

...... he paused.

Er.

Cameron Tamesis was definitely not someone he expected to see in his office. Sure, he did get new faces in here from time to time but out of the three years he'd been teaching the Slytherin, he'd never had any kind of trouble with him nor was the boy in his house so this was..... odd. And, as a result, he was very much intrigued as to what brought him here.

"Hello, Mr Tamesis," he said, gesturing to the seat in front of his desk. Take a seat? .... A Defence Against the Dark Arts unrelated question? Er. "Sure, shoot away." This didn't do anything for his confusion. He wasn't in trouble was he?

No.

Cameron was fairly certain he had never been in here before today.

Ooh, good. "Thank you." He replied politely while taking a seat in the offered chair. It seemed that Professor Hirsch wasn't opposed to him asking questions that had nothing to do with the subject he taught either. That was a relief. He'd have had to find somebody else to ask. But Jessa had specifically suggested Professor Hirsch so naturally he'd come to him first. Besides, everyone else he could think of either had too much or too little.

Clearing his throat, Cameron sat up a little straighter in his seat. "I have a question about beards." That was a normal enough question, right? Not too personal he hoped. He didn't want to impose on Professor Hirsch's personal life. "I know they start developing during puberty so I was wondering if- I was wondering when yours started to grow." He wasn't bothered or worried or anything. Just curious about the timing.

ALSO it was kind of a compliment to Professor Hirsch, did he know? He clearly had chosen him because he liked his beard.

Kyle would certainly have to talk to the house elves about getting baklava. If they could make it, that would be great! That's it. A trip down to the kitchens was necessary. But he dropped the rest of the baklava discussion for now.

Meeting an Auror... That would certainly help. "I think I would like to meet an Auror, actually. It might help me decide later if I want to be one. Though, you said there were other things that could be done in Defense. Like what?" He was honestly curious. He personally couldn't think of a thing to do as a career with what he was learning in Defense, except maybe becoming a teacher as well.

He looked a little abashed that he had been sorta practicing at home. Admittedly, he never actually cast anything, but he could probably get in trouble if he did. Thankfully, if his dad and siblings knew he was practicing, they didn't say anything. He wondered if they did it, themselves. "Is it okay to practice a little bit if you don't actually cast anything?" It was a harmless question, right? Then, a thought occurred to him from his practices that might get an answer here. "Oh, by the way professor... I know when you cast Lumos, the tip of your wand lights up. What happens if you cast it wandlessly?"

............ Beards? That..... wasn't what he had in mind.

Slightly taken aback, Hirsch blinked at the third year, wondering why, out of all the topics, beards was the one to come up. Puberty was a confusing stage, you know? Though, maybe he should be glad that it was only beards and not something else.

And, not to mention, there was a feeling of flattery there that he was being approached about this.

Whether it was because he was thinking or because someone had mentioned it, Hirsch paused to rub his facial hair. "Most boys start to get small bits of facial hair growing on the corners of their upper lips from the age of 11 to 15. Proper moustache and fuzz, something more noticeable, doesn't start growing until you're 15-17, and that's when you start to notice it." And would start to compare it with other boys and their facial hairs.

"Mine became noticeable a few weeks before my 16th birthday and I had a scruff, a bit of a beard pattern, in place by the time I was 18." Pause. "But this is different between each guy and what's in their genes; some don't grow anything noticeable until they're in their 20s and some don't grow a lot of facial hair to begin with." So he didn't have to worry about that. He was only a third year, after all.

"Are you thinking about growing a beard out?" He was curious.

"In that case, let me know when you're ready to meet one and I'll set something up." Tempest wouldn't mind, would she? Of course not. He had a winning smile, after all. "Well, teaching is one and it's a very fulfilling job." That winning smile? There it was. "If you don't want to go into teaching, you could always become a Professional Dueller. These people get paid to put on a show in the form of a duel. There are competitions and various tasks you complete and you get more money depending on how good of a show you put on while taking out your opponent. Charlotte Kettleburn, a seventh year student, has won a few medals in the Junior version." So if he wanted someone to talk to, she was one of the top choices. "It might not sound very appealing but a lot of places, especially well established places, need high levels of security and having a great grade in Defence helps. There's a section in the Ministry, under Law Enforcement as well, that deals with security. A lot of people would pay good money to have someone come and secure a building for them against potential threat."

Breathe.

"There are other options that isn't so Defence-based. Magizoology, Healing..... they require excellent knowledge of defensive magic so if either one of those appeal to you, it's something to consider." The list went on, really. "Defence is applicable in everyday life so it's important wherever you end up going." Though, of course, the boy still had some time to decide what he wanted to do - and choose his subjects accordingly - but it was nice that he had some kind of idea already.

If he didn't cast anything? "That's a big if." Just saying. "I'd say so but it's also a good idea to be careful about it as well. Some people might frown upon wanting to practice outside of Hogwarts in the first place." Though, considering the fact that he wasn't an expert on the Ministry, he wasn't sure how useful this was.

But he did know a lot about spells so the next one was one he could do a better job of answering. "Interesting question, Kyle. And I think Lumos is one of those spells where if you tried to cast is wandlessly, it would still illuminate the tip of your wand. For example, if you're in a dark area and your wand has fallen and you can't seem to find it - and you can't see where you're searching either - casting Lumos wandlessly will illuminate the tip of your wand. In that sense, it'll show you exactly where your wand is." Did that make sense? "There are some spells you can't cast wandlessly no matter what. Prior Incantato - the spell reversal spell - is one of them because it requires you putting your wand on the tip of the other person's wand. The more complicated the spell, the more difficult it'll be to cast wandlessly, especially to the same strength as you would if you'd used a wand."

The first thing Emma noticed when she came into the office was that this was NOT her father's. She knew it would be different from what she had been used to seeing before, but wow. WOW. It was really clean and less homey than before. Did the elves make everything all nice and shiney before he came? Did the new professor like it like this???? Maybe she would later bring him some things to make it more cozy and welcoming.

"Hey, Professor! I don't need anything, I just wanted to come see you and see how you were doing and maybe check out the office too. It used to be my papa's remember?" Of course he did. EVERYONE remembered her papa. "I like the drawers. What's in them?" And could she see? That was the really important question. So important that she hadn't even thought about taking a seat, or even moving towards his desk.

But then again, his mum was that ridiculous.

The man was all too glad when something broke through his concentration and gave him an excuse to look away from his mother's latest pleas, even if it came with the possibility that someone had burnt down one of his Defence rooms. Give him something, anything, to think about that wasn't as serious as the topics in the letter and he would be happy.

"Come in!"
The Gryffindor hesitated briefly before walking into the office and meeting her Defense Professor with a misleading bright grin. "Sup, Professor H!?" Usually she'd up for hopping onto one of the seats positioned in front of the man's desk, but first she had to set down the mug of coffee before she had managed to spill it all over herself (something which she surprisingly hadn't done yet). "Got something for you!" she held mug of coffee out for him to take and hoped that it hadn't gone cold between the time it took to get from the kitchens to this office.

Also, biscuits! She had a bag with some of those and held those out too.

This was helping already! Zoryn felt LOADS better.

Sort of.

Actually, she was still feeling kinda down and it was AWFUL. How did people cope with negative emotions??? They were the worst! If Zoryn had to be this sad more than once a year, she'd never want to leave the common room again. Sadness was the WORST feeling ever. Could she be done with it now? Was it over? WHEN WOULD IT END???????????????

Man.

Kyle nodded to everything as the professor spoke. Healer though... That sounded interesting. Though, Auror seemed good too. His brother had wanted to be an Auror, but wasn't selected. But for some reason he wouldn't say where in the Ministry he was working. He told their father, but that was it. "I think I'd like to either be a Healer or an Auror, Professor. Or maybe an Auror that is also good at healing, in case someone is hurt on the job." Was that a thing?

The more complicated the spell, the more difficult it'll be to cast wandlessly, especially to the same strength as you would if you'd used a wand."
It all made sense, really. Though, having his fingertip light up woulda been cooler. That was alright, though. Needing to find a wand in the dark seemed to be a good thing. "How hard is accio usually to cast wandlessly, professor? Because strangely enough, it feels like it's one of those that I could almost cast if I could just get the magic to get out of my hand. The other one is the levitation spell. Both of them I feel like they are just getting to my fingertips."

Coffee. He needed coffee.

Yawning, the Defence Professor sat behind his desk, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Everything from the essays he was marking to the reference books he was checking lay scattered across his desk in one large, jumbled mess. It probably wasn’t the best way to get this last bit of marking of the year done but it was the result of the hours he’d spent sitting here. The mess just.... happened.

Just when he’d decided to head down to the kitchens for a cup of coffee - probably with an extra shot or two - there was a knock on his door. Hirsch was halfway up from his seat when he paused and blinked in the direction of the closed door, as if he could see directly through it. He wasn’t expecting any visitors, was he? No. No one had an appointment with him so unless something happened.......

"Come in!" he called, sitting back down again. That coffee could wait and so could this marking.

OOC: RHIIIIIIIII! I’m so sorry to keep you waiting for so long! You’re more than welcome to post in the office thread now ^^
Gaston hadn't been waiting long when he heard Hirsch's voice from the other side of the door inviting him in. He rose, pointing his wand at the two cups of coffee and levitate them beside him as he opened the door. "Got a minute?" he asked, stepping inside. "I can come back later if you're busy."

It was only then that he noticed the papers and books cluttering the desk, and his eyes widened slightly. By the look of things, he'd say Hirsch was very busy. Well, he wouldn't take up any more of his time than he absolutely had to. "Here, I thought you could use this," he said, handing one of the coffee mugs to his colleague. He would've just levitate it onto the desk, but there didn't appear to be much space left there. He took a swig from his own mug and went on, "I have some..." What was the word he should use? "...concerns about a certain Ravenvlaw, and I thought you might be able to give me some advice on the situation." After all, Hirsch would know the Ravenclaws on a deeper level than him; he was their Head of House.

Hirsch watched the young girl enter his office, a small, amused smile spreading across his face. It was always interesting to see how people perceived his office, even if the reaction wasn't always a good one. One thing he could guarantee was that they were always worthwhile, just like this reaction right here.

If he was confused about Emma's sudden visit to his office, it was nothing compared to how confused he felt when she actually mentioned her reasoning. Came to see how he was doing? That was..... sweet. Really. Though, a part of him couldn't help but wonder if he'd given off any indication that he wasn't doing okay.

"It's nice of you to drop by," he said, gesturing to the seat on the other side of his desk, "I'm very well, thanks. How are you? And how's your dad doing?" Because Hirsch was curious. And feeling quite nosy, which seemed to be something the girl was sharing in as well. "The drawers?" Green eyes slid over towards the nearest ones before glancing back at her. "Information, mostly. Some of it about Defence Against the Dark Arts: books, newspaper articles, etc. There's some career information in there for the fifth years and some, er," Pause while he readjusted his glasses. "Some containing files on the students of Ravenclaw." Which were the most heavily guarded, in case she felt like nosying around in there.

Man.

Ah, a familiar face!

An immediate grin spread across his face but his was a genuine one. "Hey, Zoryn!" He didn't need to direct her to a seat, did he? She wasn't exactly a stranger, after all. But before he could think too much about this, she was holding out a mug for him. A mug of-

"Coffee!"

His green eyes lit up with the same enthusiasm as they usually did when someone told him that they were thinking about going into a career linked with Defensive magic. Or if a student gave an exceptional answer in his class. Coffee was coffee and held a kind of magic of its own, as far as he was concerned. He reached out and grasped the mug carefully with both of his hands. "And biscuits too? Wow, thanks, Zoryn! To what do I owe this pleasure?"

She wasn't trying to get him to give her extra marks for her Defence final, was she? Because coffee really was the way to go about it it wasn't going to work. Just saying.

Or maybe an Auror that is also good at healing, in case someone is hurt on the job." Was that a thing?

Kyle pouted a little, but nodded. "Yes, sir. I'll keep my practice to Hogwarts."

It all made sense, really. Though, having his fingertip light up woulda been cooler. That was alright, though. Needing to find a wand in the dark seemed to be a good thing. Healer or an Auror? Hirsch smirked slightly at that response. "Healer Reed would be happy, as am I." Just saying. "Being good at Defence is crucial for Healer studies as well so you might find yourself practising defensive magic on the job. Especially if you decide to be a...... well, the muggles call them Paramedics?" He would need to find out if St Mungos even had a division for Accidents and Emergencies but it would seem weird if it didn't. "And it would work vice versa as well because, as an Auror, you would be likely to get hurt on the job. Knowing how to do Healing magic would help you since, if you're injured, it would be useful to know how to heal yourself or others as quickly as possible."

Pause. "They're both very intense jobs that require every fibre of your being. Doing both would put a lot of strain on your brain." One of those jobs alone did that but two? He couldn't even imagine the amount of stress that would put him under.

That pout didn't go amiss but seeing as the Slytherin gave him his word, the man wasn't going to say anything against it. Not at all.

There was something interesting about what Kyle was telling him about his practices, especially the part about the magic only reaching his fingertips. "Well, the fact that you can feel it reaching your fingertips is an amazing start. Really. Some people struggle to get to that stage." If it made him feel better. "As for Accio, it's doable but it requires much more concentration from your part. More concentration and more energy. And the distance might play some part in it as well: the last thing you want is to try and cast the Summoning Charm only for your object to drop halfway and fall into the ocean." Just saying. "You would need to muster up a lot more magical energy than you would normally require." Especially if you can't see the object you're summoning. "For the Levitation Charm, it's a little simpler than the Summoning Charm because, in most cases, you're going to be looking at what you're levitating. But the same principles apply in that you'll need a lot more magical energy and concentration to try and make it work but it's doable. You just need to keep practising and keep concentrating on the magical energy."

........... Gaston?!

If Hirsch was completely honest with himself, he didn't expect this. They were friends and he'd even helped plan the man's bachelor party last summer but this was..... surprising. Naturally, his mind started flying in a number of directions and he weirdly started wondering if the Charms professor needed, ahem, advice.

He wasn't an expert on marriage, Gaston.

"Yeah, sure! I'm not too busy." Except, his desk told another story entirely. Er. Hirsch grabbed his wand from amongst the rubbish and flicked it in the direction of the mess: at once, the papers piled themselves up, the books closed and stacked themselves, and any scrunched up pieces of parchment disappeared entirely. There. Better, wasn't it?

And what was even better was the sight of a mug of coffee! The grin was instantaneous. "It's as if you read my mind," he said, taking the mug with one hand and gestured to the seat opposite his desk with the other, "Thanks for this!" He took a small sip from the cup, enjoying the calming feeling of hot caffeine in his system, but then Gaston started talking about......

........ oh.

A Ravenclaw? Lowering the mug, Hirsch furrowed his eyebrows at him, half-curious and half-confused. He didn't really get a lot of problems from his Ravenclaws - Daxton Prince was a special case - so this was surprising, to say the least. "Who? What happened?"

Most Professors didn't smile when they saw this particular Gryffindor at their door... Actually, most of them sported a grimace or even audibly sighed. But since they were buds, Professor Hirsch was super nice. Zoryn appreciated that about her. It made her feel less stupid than the other Professors tended to make her feel.

"'Course, Professor H!" She gave him a VERY enthusiastic beam, overcompensating for how awful she felt on the inside. Of course smiling really hard did nothing to mend her heart, which was SO dumb. Z was so tired of it feeling so sad. Could she be happy now, please? It was so much easier.

"I dunno..." she admitted. "I kinda just needed some company and you're my only friend," she shrugged. Théo was her friend, but he was better friends with Slyvie and his parents took him out of school cause of all the threats (booooo!!!). And of course she was friends with Derf too, but he was better friends with Abey and Stasya and Emmeline and basically Derf was friends with EVERYONE.

Most people didn't like Zoryn... Especially her Professors. They all yelled and took away points and got mad at her for answering their questions with outside-of-the-box thinking. She had NO ONE. Except for Professor Hirsch, obviously.
