The Headmaster and the Deputy - strictly professional or a little bit more? The late Dumbledore and McGonagall were undoubtedly close, but how close exactly?

I can't help thinking that there might have been more between Dumbledore and McGonagall, but that they were forced by circumstances to keep their relationship a secret. There could be several reasons for this: Professional...both held high positions at Hogwarts. Did they know each other before Dumbledore became Headmaster? He taught Transfiguration and McGonagall replaced him when he was promoted. We don't know much about her past other than that. Did she teach another subject, or did she just apply at the right time? Either way, it was Dumbledore who gave her the position. Did he know her before? He definately could have. But either way, a personal relationship could cause problems for them professionally if it was known. There is also the possibility that they chose to keep their relationship a secret for the same reason Harry broke up with Ginny after Dumbledore's death. He wanted to protect her from Voldemort. Knowing he was a target, he did not want McGonagall used to get to him. The one thing we do know is that they were close and held a high respect for each other, and Dumbledore believed in the power of love! I believe he shared that with her!

I agree with Tatewin. the first time i read a HP book which was in 2004 i shipped Dumbledore & Mcgonagall. I thoght that they kept their relationship a secret

It's definitely an interesting topic...it's one of those things that we can discuss and theorise (is that even a word? LOL), and yet we'll probably never find out anything about it...

I always hoped to see them together but unfortunatly DD died. I don't konw if there was any feelings between them or not. Rowling didn't hint about that.

I think at the very least McGonagall and Dumbledore were very close friends.
Minerva has been teaching at Hogwarts for a very long time (Dumbledore for longer of course) and if you work together with someone for that period of time, then you get to know each other very well.

I also find it interesting that neither of them married, not even when they were younger (as far as we know).

This is sort of a weird ship. It's impossible now, though, because DD is...well, you know...dead.

and with what McGonagall in the hospital wing at the end "Dumbledore would've been happier to think there was a little more love in the world" (or something of the sort) I think she must've been very close to him to have said that as quickly as she did.

I really loved when they danced together in the movie and this made me believe more in this ship...Mcgohaglle was close to DD.

I really haven't noticed this ship at all, i'll have to read the books again and see if i can pick it up.

I always suspected something between them...who's to say whether or not they are lovers? we haven't exactly gotten any hints, and if we did, they were pretty darn subtle. i think when you're as close to someone as they were to each other, it's hard to not feel at least some sort of attraction. and on the topic of Dumbly being dead...all I gotta say is: "number one rule of death in literature (but mostly comics) - no body, no death"

well...hmm...for some reason I'm remembering them cremating dumbly...was that in the book? (i never remember what i read after i read it). if it was...that may not have been HIS body. hello! this is magic land where ANYTHING can happen. at first, i accepted that he was dead, but in thinking back to book 5 when dumbly tells harry that he'll see sirius again...i thought to myself "i think dumbly's comin back for a little mcgonagall lovin "

i think they liked eachother because mcgonagall is not menchioned a lot. maby DD told her about horuxes but told her to keep quiet

well, considering that this was Dumbledore, it could have been a decoy...(like Naruto does...hahahahahaha)

I was going to say that it could have been Cedric's transfigured (I almost said transmogrified, but then I remembered that's from Calvin and Hobbes) body, but then that would just be wrong, and Dumbly would NEVER do that. especially not to one of his students. so my guess is that it was just something he conjured up...kind of like a patronus charm, but more realistic and less for the reason of protecting him from dementors.
hmm...this is getting deep.

wouldn't just rock, though, if Dumbledore came back from the "dead" and was like "Minerva! I love you! Let's be genius lovers!"
haha....I think I would actually laugh if something like that happened...as much as I like the idea od Dumbledore and McGonagall getting together, I think it would just be too weird if it happened...

Hahaha thats a good one. I think they may have had feelings for each other, but never acted on it. Probably discussed it and said they would try to keep it profesional. Maybe even had a secret relationship.
Also I believe that none of the teachers are married. Jo's never mentioned any of the teachers having a spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/lover.

I think she was the headmistress of the French school from book 4 (the name slips my mind)
