To start the discussion off:

I'd like to create a listing of various yarn brands and what colors most closely match the house colors. I know I'm currently trying to find the right colors for Knit Picks Wool of the Andes line and I'll post what colors in that line seem to match the house colors. If you guys have other suggestions (I know Lion has some suggestions for house colors in Wool-Ease- though I don't like what they chose for Ravenclaw since Claws are bronze, not silver) please post or PM them to me.

I made a HP Gryffindor scarf, but I got my wool from a vendor at the Fergus Highland games, in Canada. The colours I picked were a sort of mustard yellow and a burgandy red as opposed to bright yellow and bright red. I will be hopefully putting up a thread with a picture soon if you'd like to see the colours.

There is a program you can use, Jeeves, that can turn any graphic into a cross stitch pattern. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm sure there's a free place to find it online. But anyway, I'll keep a look out. I think that a cross-stitched Hogwarts crest would look AWESOME mounted.

I'm trying to improve my crochet skills to come out with some of the things that Kris is producing. So far, I can do the basics, but I don't really know how to put it all together. I'm looking forward to using her resources.

EDIT: I found a link: Counted Cross Stitch . Apparently you can upload graphics to turn into cross stitch patterns there. I haven't tried it yet.

EDIT AGAIN: I tried it, and it's awesome.

Oh, that's AWESOME Erin. That looks soooo much easier than the way I was doing it several years back when I was super into cross stitching. I would blow up the image in PhotoShop so that it pizellated and then you had to decide on colors and then you used a plugin to spit out the chart. LOL

The only stuff I've ever made that is HP-related is a ceramics carved Hedwig, which I think looks pretty darn cool and a wand for the Deathly Hallows party

I'm an occasional cross-stitcher and I must admit i hadn't thought of doing HP themed cross stitch. I am in the middle of doing one of a wizard, but it's more of a traditional fantasy wizard (his robes are purpley pink though).

Anyway, that website for making cross stitch charts looks awesome, I might have to try it out!

I sew together a Gryffindor tie for the opening of the Deadthly Hallows. It actually didn't take that much time, turning it insideout did, the the acutal time was about one hour and that was to put the stripes on it as well.

Ern, thanks for the link! When I finish my holiday ornaments, I'm definitely going to load a great picture of either Hogwarts and the lake or the school crest. Now to decide...

Kris, you have made my last dream of SS come true by putting up this forum! I am an avid (insane) crafter, I do cake decorating, cross stitch, scrapbooking, crochet, sewing, but knitting is my one true passion. I will be sharing ideas and thoughts with you guys - can't wait!

Seven layers of awesome! Thank you again!

hehe I'm glad I could make your dreams come true. I don't know why we didn't think of it before (I'm an avid crafter myself, though I don't have or make enough time for it anymore. Next time you have an idea or a dream for SS- POST IT! (Unless you did and I missed, in which case- shame on me hehe)

Anyway, any info you could share for knitting especially would be awesome. I never managed to get into it, though when I started to crochet I really got into that (started a couple months ago and now I'm insane with it).

I just remembered that I actually did do more than just the quilt. I've made a lined, hooded, cloak, though I don't think I ever took any pictures. It came out really really well, if I do say so myself. Slytherin.

Knitting, I've been doing it since I was 12 years old (my mother was really into it, I think it's the only craft she could do, in fact! But she was great at it and got a lot of enjoyment from doing it.) I can usually be found working on some project or the other. Right now I'm making an afghan for a group called Warm Up America, they distribute afghans and things to people who are in need. I have until November 15 to finish that one up (because there is also a contest associated with this project and that's the deadline. It is being run by a catalog company called PatternWorks. The afghan must be made up entirely of 7x9 inch squares, and must be composed of both knitted and crocheted squares. Plus the other twist is that you have to buy a sampler of five different yarns and incorporate all of them into your afghan, along with any other yarns you choose to use. I have made an original pattern for my afghan, I promise I will photograph it and post it up here before I send it in!) Then I want to do some Harry Potter stuff.

I can crochet, but basically I only do the single crochet stitch. I need to broaden my horizon, because I have gotten really fast at doing it. I think the quilting is awesome, I've never really gotten into it that much, for some reason, but I certainly respect people who do it and are good at it. Maybe I don't have the patience, or maybe I just have a crummy sewing machine!

Any knitting questions you have, just let me know! I do realize that most new knitters have a hard time more with learning the purl stitch than the regular knit stitch, in fact, I had a hard time learning it myself. Once you get it it's really easy, because there are only those two stitches - the knit and the purl. Everything else is just built off of that basis.

When I get home I am going to check about the colors for use in the Harry Potter scarves, and I will post my findings on here in the next day or so! I am looking at Utopia yarns and Plymouth Encore (the yarn I'm using for the afghan) right now, I can check on other brands, too!

Either because you have the picture in the wrong format, or it's too big. Those are the only reasons I can think of...

A pillow would be awesome... Hmm... Now I want to make a Hogwarts Crest pillow I should do that... Cross-stiching is the bestest. I'm in love with that cross stitch website

I'm nearing completion of that part knit, part crochet afghan that I've been working on, I'm rushing to get it finished by Monday the 12th so that it can be submitted in time for the contest. Photo up soon!

I've only made a Chirstmas Harry Potter Ornament!! Hah I made four mini ties for each house and hung them up! It's so funny, they're actually hanging on my tree now! I basically just used paper, markers and glitter!!

So, I think I am going to begin a new cross-stitch. I've been working on holiday ornaments lately so I haven't been able to start my HP one, but I think I am going to after the new year. Perhaps a cross-stitch pillow of the Hogwarts crest?

And maybe, if it comes out as nice as it should, I'll give it to SS as a gift to be won in some contest that we always have around here
