Wow, I just want to say that all the entries have been fantastic! I am really impressed with the skill each of you have shown, as well as the imagination and creativity. Jan, Erin, and Kris, your entries were all outstanding. We'll be waiting to see the instructions to that awesome bag, Kris, I have never seen anything like that! I am amazed that you made that so quickly. Jan, your snitch was great as well, as was the necklace and paper snitch, Erin. A wonderful job by all, I loved everything each of you made, thank you!

Now we come to this -


The theme for challenge #2 is BOOKMARK.

What I mean by this is for you to make a bookmark with a Harry Potter or Hogwarts theme! Should be simple, I figure those at all levels of crafting can do this, and two weeks should give you plenty of time to finish and post it here!

Here's your guide (copied from Jan's original rules):

1. You have to begin it now, it can't be something you made before the challenge was issued.
2. It has to be related to the theme in some way, but not necessarily in the most obvious way.
3. You can use designs you found online or in books, or you can design something original.
4. You have two weeks from the date of the challenge issue to complete the craft.
5. Your craft can be any artisan craft medium; knit, crochet, wirework, beads, sculpture (bread dough, sculpey, fimo, porcelain clay, wood, stone, clay, metal art clay, glass, etc), food (cake deco, etc) or any other three dimensional object. Sorry, no graphics or pictures; we have other areas on SS that highlight that kind of art.
6. You must post a picture for us in this thread when you're done. Include info about it, what it's made of and such. If you want to share your pattern or include process pictures (how you make it), feel free!
7. This challenge is open and supportive of all levels of ability, from the very beginning beginner to the most advanced artist. All are welcome and praised!
8. Tell us what you're going to do with your final product; keep it, gift it or donate it.
9. First one to post their final project gets to pick the theme of the next challenge!!!

This challenge expires on April 19, 2008. (Though members are welcome to continue posting pics of any of their projects relating to bookmarks in this thread after the challenge ends as well as the previous theme (snitches).

Yay, I'm first! I made my bookmark with a Ravenclaw theme in color, using glass beads and organdy ribbon. I had high hopes for my ribbons, but the beads I planned on had holes that were too small for the pretty pretty ribbons. I had to make some changes, but what I ended up with worked just as well.







Final notes, the ribbon has a tendency to unravel a bit and I wanted to keep the beads in place, so I added some clear nail polish to the ends and to the tops of each bead cluster. Works just as well as glue and is much easier to apply.

As for using it... I plan to keep it in a book .

Woot second! lol *facepalm* I loved this challenge, and I think I may go on making more bookmarks (like Jan said... one for every book? Buhahaha) along these lines.

At first I'd picked up my embroidery ring and started an embroidered bookmark... but halfway through I lost inspiration for it and decided to work with felt (love it) instead. And I love the Snitch challenge, so... I may or may not be allowed to do this, but here's my response to both challenges:





Just plain old felt with a piece of cardboard in between to keep it firm.

My first attempt (unfinished), on calico, with a layer of batting in between:





I have to finish this bookmark! But I don't know how yet... so I'll wait til inspiration strikes. Phew, I haven't touched my embroidery kit in 7 years! It's a mess!

What I'm going to do with it: Use it, of course. I'll make more to give away, or keep. lol

My bookmark:

I think the light from the window was too bright, you can't see the texture.

It's sterling siver wire (14ga), hammered with the round end of a chasing hammer for texture, so it's kinda sparkly. The red beads are all swarovski crystal and the lion is nickel, I think.

Okay, this is my contribution to the bookmark challenge. This pattern was found in Charmed Knits, page 96, I made it in Slytherin colors. It is a miniature Hogwarts scarf, you can make narrow or wide stripe version (this is narrow) and in all four house colors, of course. It is knit on double pointed needles, which works very fast once you get the first couple rows going. The fringe is done at the end using a small crochet hook. Very quick project, and very easy!
