Default Craft Challenge #1: Snitch
Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!

I've decided to start a craft challenge series!

Foxfire suggested a crochet-or knit-along and I thought, well you know, not everyone does needle/yarn work. What about an open challenge set around a theme? So here we are.

The theme for challenge #1 is SNITCH.
This being SnitchSeeker.com, I thought it was appropriate.

Here's your guide:
  1. You have to begin it now, it can't be something you made before the challenge was issued.
  2. It has to be related to the theme in some way, but not necessarily in the most obvious way.
  3. You can use designs you found online or in books, or you can design something original.
  4. You have two weeks from the date of the challenge issue to complete the craft.
  5. Your craft can be any artisan craft medium; knit, crochet, wirework, beads, sculpture (bread dough, sculpey, fimo, porcelain clay, wood, stone, clay, metal art clay, glass, etc), food (cake deco, etc) or any other three dimensional object. Sorry, no graphics or pictures; we have other areas on SS that highlight that kind of art.
  6. You must post a picture for us in this thread when you're done. Include info about it, what it's made of and such. If you want to share your pattern or include process pictures (how you make it), feel free!
  7. This challenge is open and supportive of all levels of ability, from the very beginning beginner to the most advanced artist. All are welcome and praised!
  8. Tell us what you're going to do with your final product; keep it, gift it or donate it.
  9. First one to post their final project gets to pick the theme of the next challenge!!!

This challenge expires on April 5, 2008. (Though members are welcome to continue posting pics of any of their projects relating to snitches in this thread after the challenge ends).

I found this snitch pattern right here in Second Hand Robes, one which our own Kris kindly posted up for us a little while ago - Golden Snitch Pattern. This snitch is crocheted, it took me less than an hour to make it. I used regular worsted yarn and a size G crochet hook, and will probably either use this as a Christmas ornament on our tree next year, as a package ornament for someone, or as a very small stocking gift (it's definitely intended for Christmas, one way or the other!)

Unfortunately my digital camera takes photos that are somewhat on the dark side, because I knew that this is a time challenge type thing. The photos I take with the regular camera and process to the CD are much better. I will try and make a priority getting a better digital camera in the future! If you like, I will post a better picture in here later.

In any case, it was very simple to make, a project I believe anyone could do. Here it is -

Thanks so much, Jan, for running this contest. I think it's going to be lots of fun!

Jan: I took the liberty of lightening this pic and boosting the colour a bit, hope that's ok!

Jan - Thanks so much, I appreciate your doing that! It looks a lot better now, I must say! And here's another look, after I played with my graphics program (I like this so much I should maybe do it all the time!) -

Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!

I knew someone would use that snitch pattern hehehe! I didn't want to do the same so I just made one up as I went along.

SPOILER!!: SNITCH

SPOILER!!: How I made it

I used two strands at once, each worsted acrylic and a 5mm hook (G?). The colours are a light beige and bright yellow. The wings are worsted acrylic in white.

ball:
R1 - sc 6 in a circle (I use magic double loop, or whatever it's normally called)
R2 - 2sc in each st = 12st
R3 - *1sc, 2sc in next st (increase)* repeated around = 18st
R4 to R6 - sc around
R7 - *1sc, sc 2tog (decrease)* repeated around = 12st
R8 - sc 2tog (decrease) around = 6st
R9 - not sure how to write this: I inserted my hook and pulled the loop through and kept it on my hook on every 2nd st, then slip stitched and chain one to bind it off.
weave ends in.

wings (make 2)
R1 - sc 6 in a circle (magic double loop again.)
R2 - 2sc each stitch = 12st
R3 -
  • *2sc each stitch* three times, chain ten free from the circle.
  • sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 more sc
  • dc next 4 st
  • tc next 3 st, the last should be the inside corner where the chain meets the circle.
  • dc next st
  • sc next 4 st
  • slip stitch next stitches until the row marker (or thereabouts)
R4 - slip stitch along each stitch to the tip of the wing. Ch 1 and bind off, weaving your ends in.

I don't know if this made any sense though. LOL

Another pic, maybe you can see the wing better in this one:

Linda gets to pick the next theme. YAY!

Jan - I think your snitch is beautiful, I love the blended colors! Very nice.

Shall we give everyone till the 5th of April to post their projects, and then I will put a new challenge up for everyone to do? This is so much fun! (Is excited to have been first winner.)

Thanks!

Yep! People can post snitches in here for as long as they want, but the next challenge goes up on the 5th. Let's keep the comments to a minimum though, so we have more pics than chatter in this thread, ok?

Okie dokie, so... I have two projects.

The first is an origami snitch. I actually made one out of yellow paper, but this picture just turned out much better. The design is the typical box or 'water bomb' that you blow into in order to puff it up, with some additonal steps at the very end when you'd normally tuck the ends in.

SPOILER!!: Paper Snitchy

I also made a Quidditch-themed bracelet using carnelian, black Czech glass, and gold-plated Bali beads, as well as a pretty little winged thing that looks just like a Snitch to me. The numbers are actually right so that there are 2 black 'Bludger' beads for every one red 'Quaffle' and gold 'Snitch' beads. I'm also making a keychain from these beads to give to my HP fanatic sister.

The quality of the pictures is terrible because I took them on the fly with my cell phone, but I'll try to get better shots with my digi later. The first shows the shape of the bracelet, and the second photo shows the actual beads (if a bit blurry).

SPOILER!!: The Quidditch Bracelet

Where did you find the oragami snitch instructions? If it's on the web, maybe we can post the link up? I think I have a paper crafts section (with the marauder's map) in the resources thread.

I have finally finished the challenge:

SPOILER!!: Snitch Bag

It's an original design and I'll post up the instructions as soon as I put the finishing touches on them (but, be warned, I write as I go along and sometimes there may be errors or not enough description because I get distracted).

I've decided to start crafting again, and what better way then to try to respond to all the challenges we have in here? So starting with the first, I know I posted these in my personal thread yesterday, but ever since this challenge was posted I keep making Snitch related crafts! It's gotten me obsessed! lol I've been searching for ways to make a snitch out of everything and I'm hoping that it's like trying to get a song unstuck in your head... I have to post this here before I go crazy and fill my house with Snitches:

Photos!: golden snitch earrings

They are made from Ikea's Pyssla beads, which I stuck on a Pyssla template board and then ironed for about 3 minutes. Then I made a hole in the top using a round nosed plier and attached store-bought earring hooks onto them. I added a 5mm silver jump ring between the earring hook and the hole to make them more flexible (so they swish about!). And then I hooked them onto my earlobes (lol):

Photos!: yaaaaay I caught them snitches!

I ramble.
