SBFC topic #19: Sirius Black in JK's Prequel
We've all been pondering and discussing and fantasizing about what the post-Hogwarts Sirius might have been, prior to his imprisonment. Well, now we finally have canon to help with that. Though, admittedly, a little piece, instead of the amount we would've wanted.
I'm sure most of you have read the prequel JK wrote for charity, starring James and Sirius. If not, here it is, courtesy of the SS News article in which it was featured:
SPOILER!!: JK Prequel
The speeding motorcycle took the sharp corner so fast in the darkness that both policemen in the pursuing car shouted 'whoa!' Sergeant Fisher slammed his large foot on the brake, thinking that the boy who was riding pillion was sure to be flung under his wheels; however, the motorbike made the turn without unseating either of its riders, and with a wink of its red tail light, vanished up the narrow side street.
'We've got 'em now!" cried PC Anderson excitedly. 'That's a dead end!"
Leaning hard on the steering wheel and crashing his gears, Fisher scraped half the paint off the flank of the car as he forced it up the alleyway in pursuit.
There in the headlights sat their quarry, stationary at last after a quarter of an hour's chase. The two riders were trapped between a towering brick wall and the police car, which was now crashing towards them like some growling, luminous-eyed predator.
There was so little space between the car doors and the walls of the alley that Fisher and Anderson had difficulty extricating themselves from the vehicle. It injured their dignity to have to inch, crab-like, towards the miscreants. Fisher dragged his generous belly along the wall, tearing buttons off his shirt as he went, and finally snapping off the wing mirror with his backside.
'Get off the bike!' he bellowed at the smirking youths, who sat basking in the flashing blue light as though enjoying it.
They did as they were told. Finally pulling free from the broken wind mirror, Fisher glared at them. They seemed to be in their late teens. The one who had been driving had long black hair; his insolent good looks reminded Fisher unpleasantly of his daughter's guitar-playing, layabout boyfriend. The second boy also had black hair, though his was short and stuck up in all directions; he wore glasses and a broad grin. Both were dressed in T-shirts emblazoned with a large golden bird; the emblem, no doubt, of some deafening, tuneless rock band.
'No helmets!' Fisher yelled, pointing from one uncovered head to the other. 'Exceeding the speed limit by - by a considerable amount!' (In fact, the speed registered had been greater than Fisher was prepared to accept that any motorcycle could travel.) 'Failing to stop for the police!'
'We'd have loved to stop for a chat,' said the boy in glasses, 'only we were trying -'
'Don't get smart - you two are in a heap of trouble!' snarled Anderson. 'Names!'
'And what's nice about that one is, you can use it for a boy or a girl,' said the boy in glasses.
'Oh, OUR names, did you mean?' asked the first, as Anderson spluttered with rage. 'You should've said! This here is James Potter, and I'm Sirius Black!'
'Things'll be seriously black for you in a minute, you cheeky little -'
But neither James nor Sirius was paying attention. They were suddenly as alert as gundogs, staring past Fisher and Anderson, over the roof of the police car, at the dark mouth of the alley. Then, with identical fluid movements, they reached into their back pockets.
For the space of a heartbeat both policemen imagined guns gleaming at them, but a second later they saw that the motorcyclists had drawn nothing more than -
'Drumsticks?' jeered Anderson. 'Right pair of jokers, aren't you? Right, we're arresting you on a charge of -'
But Anderson never got to name the charge. James and Sirius had shouted something incomprehensible, and the beams from the headlights had moved.
The policemen wheeled around, then staggered backwards. Three men were flying - actually FLYING - up the alley on broomsticks - and at the same moment, the police car was rearing up on its back wheels.
Fisher's knees bucked; he sat down hard; Anderson tripped over Fisher's legs and fell on top of him, as FLUMP - BANG - CRUNCH - they heard the men on brooms slam into the upended car and fall, apparently insensible, to the ground, while broken bits of broomstick clattered down around them.
The motorbike had roared into life again. His mouth hanging open, Fisher mustered the strength to look back at the two teenagers.
'Thanks very much!' called Sirius over the throb of the engine. 'We owe you one!'
There was an earth-shattering crash, and Fisher and Anderson threw their arms around each other in fright; their car had just fallen back to the ground. Now it was the motorcycle's turn to rear. Before the policemen's disbelieving eyes, it took off into the air: James and Sirius zoomed away into the night sky, their tail light twinkling behind them like a vanishing ruby.
So what do you think of Sirius, the young adult?
How similar is he to the picture of him you had for so long?
Any thoughts are welcome, and I trust you enjoyed the prequel as much as I did =)

Oooooh oh, gosh! Reading that made me laugh so much, and it really back up the way I have always pictured Sirius pre-Azkaban. I think I like and understand Sirius so well because out of all the HP characters, he is the one I can relate too the most... easily.
Right after Hogwarts, this is the exact kind of stuff I imagined Sirius getting into. The rebellious teen that still hasn't grown out of his younger thirst for mischief. I was really glad J.K. wrote this, she did a really good job of showing Sirius's funny and dry sense of humor in his younger years.
I really don't know what else to elaborate on besides the fact that I think J.K. was spot on. But on another note, I saw this was at least a good four or five years before James got married. And also a good while before they joined the Order of the Phoenix. There were much smarter than to pull this kind of stuff during a War.

Hmm... from what I recalled, this was after James got married. I mean... they're talking about names for his kid, and in the news thread where this was published, it was mentioned that Sirius was in his late teens, so maybe 19/20 at the time of this prequel.
According to the Lexicon, "Lily and James were married very quietly sometime between summer of 1978 and fall of 1979." So that would make James 18 or 19, since he died in 1981, when he was 21. Sirius must have been thrown into jail when he was 21, too.
Umm... a bit confusing, but yeah. Probably 19 or 20, if you ask me XD

I loved this little piece, it is exactly how I imagined both Sirius and James being at that age. The only thing about it, it is very brief, how I wish there were much more written! This tiny bit only leaves one thirsting for more, but what can you do? At least we have something and who knows? Maybe there will be more later on.
I have to say that I am sooooo pleased that JKR has finally decided to do this. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! That woman had to write more on Sirius Black because the man is too popular for words.
And this is exactly how I imagined them, smart mouths and studs! I cannot wait to read this as it will be my favorite of all. That is why I like OoTP so much because you learn so much more about Sirius than ever before. I love that man!

I keep living in a "what if" world, such as "What if J.K. Rowling decides she is going to write more HP stuff, what if she is going to write an entire book about all our faves, especially the really awesome ones like Sirius? I know, I know, but we can dream and you never know (I've got to have some dream!) If she would write a book from Sirius' POV detailing his whole life at Hogwarts (i.e. the whole Marauder history) and up until POA, that would be amazing! Stuff dreams are made of, people, definitely the stuff dreams are made of!

This was just a brilliant piece of writing. It matched exactly the image I had of Sirius and James as young adults. Their Hogwarts prankster personality still shows, but they're thinking more about survival. Maybe they always did think about survival, but how they got rid of the men on brooms was similar to how I imagined them fighting enemies during the war - funny, but in a way deadly serious.
It's also really nice to see Sirius away from Harry and yet not in prison.

I just now saw this.......and.....it's awesome!
I love, love, love how the motorcycle's in it, and it's got JK's signature hilarity and great dialogue......*sigh* If only she'd write another full book. I never realized how much I loved her writing style until now.
But anyways, this is sooo Sirius and James, and it was nice see the two of them interacting without any Voldemort discussing or nonsense like that. It was all true to their characters and a delight to read.
Everyone has said it all already, really. You gotta love Sirius.
Butttt. I will add one more thing. The whole encounter with muggles makes me wonder what Sirius really thought of them.xD I know, I know...a bit off topic but ehh. After reading the prequel a few weeks back, I started daydreaming about Sirius and a...strictly non-magical muggle girl [Before you guys start rolling your eyes, the muggle girl's name isn't Tina.xD]. I can't imagine many people from HP doing this but I could so see him dating a muggle girl...xD Almost makes me want to start a fic about it. =X
*pokes everyone looking at me all 'o_O'* You guys said it was a discussion! I'm discussing! ...I'll shuttup now. =X
*zooms out*
This was both hit and miss for me. James and Sirius were both as I would've imagined them as teens. But, the whole encounter with enemies surprised me. I would've expected both of them to take such a thing a little more seriously. After all, they were in the middle of a war, and yet they don't seem to notice a thing. I suppose one can chalk that up to young people feeling as though they're immortal. Sirius didn't become much of a curmudgeon until after his imprisonment and the death of his best friend.
Still, it made me smile to see Sirius happy, laughing and free for once before his false imprisonment takes place. Aside from the conflict present in the form of their stalkers, the both of them acted spot on.
