Your ABC to Romanian Since I have promised to teach someone Romanian ( ) I have started this thread to get you all acquainted with the basics of the language. I will try to make it as user-friendly as I can, and I am always open to suggestions or queries. 
Romanian is not difficult as a conversational language. Upon intending to learn it more in-depth, however, its grammar and rules can prove a considerable challenge – but a good one, at that. First lesson: 1) The Romanian alphabet: A, Ă, Â, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, Î, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, Ş, T, Ţ, U, V, W, X, Y, Z It is almost exactly like the English one, with the following differences:
* we generally use the letters y and w for borrowed words (they are not really part of our language)
* we have the following special characters: ă, â, î, ş, ţ. How to read the special characters: ă = like a in an â = like the sound between g and r in grr... [growling] î = idem â ş = like sh in shut up ţ = like tz in wal tz *the difference between â and î is that â is used in the middle of a word, meanwhile î is used at the beginning or end of the word in question. Example: întuneric = darkness
c ântec = song I will reopen the Alphabet game, and you are welcome at all times to post any questions, phrases you would like to have translated and such. Just stay on topic.

But, either way... Great first lesson... XD Though, I have one thing I need to clear up... Is there somewhere that you have the codes for the special letters? If not, could you put them up in the first lesson post so I know where to look in case I ever forget them after you tell them to me.

instead i teach russian.

I still don't totally understand the "ă" sound. Like is like the "a" as in "apple"??? I don't get the "î" sound either. Wat does it mean "idem"????? That lesson was good. Just a quick question, how do u type the special characters, cuz I've just been copying and pasteing them.

What if you to your language bar ----> settings ----> and choose to add the romanian keyboard. Maybe this will solve the problem, you just have to find out where the corresponding romanian letter is in your keyboard.

The "ă" sound is like "a" in "an" [an apple].
The "î" sounds exactly like the "â" one. 'Idem' means 'likewise'. As for the special characters, Siriana's way is probably the easiest and the best I can think of. You can also try to generate the codes from Microsoft Word [Insert-Symbol], but somehow those don't seem to work on my PC. o.O | |

I had a grammar and phonology lesson in mind up next, but I figured that too much theory can be overwhelming, so I’m delaying that a bit further down the line. For now: Lesson # 2: Greetings Bună = Hello Salut = Hello Bună dimineaţa = Good morning Bună ziua = Good afternoon Bună seara = Good evening Noapte bună =Good night La revedere = Good bye Pa = Bye Adio = Farewell How to introduce yourself: Numele meu este... = My name is... Eu sunt... = I am.... Mă cheamă... = I am called... Example: Hello! My name is Chris. Bună! Numele meu este Chris. As an exercise, you can post your own introduction in the Romanian Introduction Thread: Clicketh Feel free to use other formulas of telling someone who you are, like the ones I’ve previously mentioned.
Edit: And another thing, I may soon include some audio files, too. I reckon it would make the whole special characters and phonology issue much easier. ^^ | |
