Draco, Ron, and I ventured out into Diagon Alley. We were going to head off to Flourish and Blott’s first to buy our spell books. I walked in the middle of Draco and Ron, holding Ron’s hand, of course. I kept glancing over at Draco who was disguised as Ron’s long lost “Cousin Todd.” It was quite humorous, Draco Malfoy being disguised as a Muggle boy. I don’t think he thought it was very hilarious though.

“I feel so short,” Draco complained.

“You are rather short,” I teased him. His body was now only about five feet and three inches. He scowled at me, but it wasn’t the usual Malfoy scowl; it looked hilarious etched onto the face it was on.

Ron looked over at us. He had mentioned to me that we shouldn’t feel too sorry for Draco. I told him that he was being inconsiderate. He followed by some ludicrous accusation that I liked Draco; what nonsense!

We got to Flourish and Blott’s; this was by far my favorite place in Diagon Alley. It was covered from floor to ceiling in books upon books upon books! Where else would I love to be more in the world than here? We took out our lists, perused the spell books and found them all easily. We paid and left the store rather quickly to my disappointment.

“Aw, couldn’t we stay a little longer?” I protested.

Ron scoffed, “Honestly, Hermione, who would want to stay in there longer than they had to?” It sort of stung coming from him; you’d think he’d know by now that I loved books.

“I actually don’t mind staying longer,” the redheaded Muggle voice beside me piped up.

“See Ron! Cousin Todd doesn’t mind! Let’s stay a little longer,” I begged.

Ron scowled in Draco’s direction. I knew he was thinking about it. “Fine,” he said.

I wasn’t going to have Hermione thinking I was the bad guy and Draco was the good guy. Wouldn’t it appear that way if Draco was offering to stay and I said we had to leave anyway? I couldn’t help but think that Draco had a thing for Hermione; Hermione insisted it was absurd. After all, he had been raised to hate Muggleborns. I still just couldn’t get it out of the back of my mind….

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3 Normal POV <3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Harry and Ginny finished their ice creams that they had enjoyed so much. “I guess we should be off to get our spell books, right Harry?” Ginny asked, sad to be leaving the nice ice cream parlor.

“Yeah,” said Harry who was extremely full.

The two got up and left the parlor. They walked down Diagon Alley and reached Flourish and Blott’s. Inside, they ran into Ron, Hermione, and Draco disguised as Cousin Todd.

“Hello!” they said brightly to the three.

“Hi,” said Ron huffily. Harry wondered what was eating him. He was going to find out.

“Hey Ron,” Harry began, “I saw some Chudley Cannon stuff I wanted to show you, could you come with me?”

Ron nodded and hesitantly looked back at Hermione. “Just wait here, I’m sure it’ll only be a minute,” he told her finally. He walked with Harry.

“What Chudley Cannon stuff, Harry?” Ron asked looking back at Hermione worriedly.

“Nothing,” Harry began, “I wanted to know what’s wrong with you.”

Ron sighed. “I think Malfoy and Hermione have a thing going on or something.” He turned bright red and sat awaiting Harry’s verdict. Instead, Harry burst out laughing.

“Hermione and Malfoy, Ron? Of all people! Get that out of your mind; listen in a week’s time, we’ll be back at Hogwarts and everything will be back to normal. Malfoy will go about his business ignoring us, and we’ll do the same for him, including Hermione. Now come on, let’s enjoy the trip to Diagon Alley,” Harry said.

Ron nodded. Harry was right of course. So, while he pushed the silly thoughts out of his mind, he couldn’t help but think that he was ready for this week to be over so things really could go back to normal; he was ready to go back to Hogwarts.

Finally, a week later, they were all headed to King’s Cross Station to get on the Hogwarts Express after going through the solid barrier between platforms nine and ten. They reached the station in a hurry; that seemed to be a Weasley trademark which had lasted from Harry’s first year apparently to his last.

They all managed to get through the platform successfully. Mrs. Weasley’s eyes welled up with tears as she said goodbye to them; she couldn’t believe it was their last time doing this. This, of course, excluded Ginny. They hurried on to the train and, remarkably, found a compartment to themselves.

“I’ve got a surprise for you all,” Hermione said eagerly, as though she had been holding this in for a very long time.

Ron smiled; he seemed to know what she was talking about. Harry had a feeling he did too. Ginny knew what was coming as well. Hermione carried on, however, as if no one was sitting there with knowledgeable looks on their faces. “I,” she began, blushing, “Have been made Head Girl!” She shrieked the last bit and went completely red in the face.

Harry, Ginny and Ron’s faces all lit up immediately. Hermione received such praise as, “Great job, Hermione!” and “Brilliant!”

Something struck Ron’s mind, and he said, “Well, who has been made Head Boy then?” Hermione frowned slightly.

“Oh, erm, well Draco has,” she said awkwardly, knowing Ron probably wasn’t going to like that. She didn’t see why Ron feared anything with Draco; yes, they had become civil friends, but they didn’t have any sort of romantic relationship whatsoever. Hermione couldn’t quite grasp the competition Ron felt against Draco. Draco surely didn’t feel the same thing at all.

Ron’s ears were red; “Oh, really? That’s great,” he said, obviously lying. He never was much of a liar.

Harry felt a storm coming on. He and Ginny exchanged glances. “Well,” Ginny said, “That’s too bad.” She hoped that Hermione would just agree, even if she wasn’t being truthful, to shut Ron up.

Hermione felt obliged to be truthful. “Oh, no I’m sure he will do a great job,” she said earnestly. Ron went absolutely red at this. Hermione continued on, “I’m just rather sad that I won’t be in the Gryffindor dorms anymore! I’ll have a Common Room and a dorm all to myself…well of course I’ll be sharing the Common Room with Draco.”

Ron had seemingly had enough. “Can you request your own Common Room?” he pushed.

Hermione looked befuddled. “Why would I do that, Ron? It’s part of being Head Girl. If I ask for another place to stay, I could well lose my post,” she said.

Ron’s anger grew. “Well,” he said, “Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad for you to lose your post, working alongside Malfoy!” His anger had begun to get the best of him. Hermione looked completely furious.

“Ron!” she exclaimed, “I have been working towards this my entire career at Hogwarts. You expect me to give it up based on who I was partnered with? And why have you returned to calling him ‘Malfoy.’ You know good and well that over the summer we began calling him by his real name!” She was astounded at her boyfriend’s selfishness.

Ron’s anger was reaching its peak. “Maybe that was a mistake; maybe SOME OF US got too friendly with him!”

Hermione was infuriated now; “You just think we have something going on! Honestly, get over it and grow up, Ronald!” she exclaimed.

“Me grow up?” Ron started, “I think you’re the one who looked at Malfoy all summer with googly eyes!” Ron was making false accusations now, and that was going just a bit too far.

Hermione laughed a high, cold, false laugh. “Googly eyes? That’s hilarious Ron. Honestly, when you grow up, you give me a call. I can’t even believe you sometimes. I have to go; as HEAD GIRL, I have to go and lead the prefects meeting. I suppose you’re a prefect, so maybe you should get off your tail and get in to fulfill your responsibilities. Although it’s not like you ever really cared.”

Ron was fuming; “Fine, I won’t go then, if I never really cared.”

Hermione shrugged. “Fine, lost your post. I really don’t care.” She stalked off and found Draco in the corridor of the train, also heading to the prefects compartment. She looked thoroughly troubled and it didn’t get by Draco.

“Hey,” Draco said, looking around to be sure that no one was watching. After all, his father couldn’t know where he had been the majority of the summer. “Are you alright?” Hermione shook her head and said that she would explain in a bit. She wasn’t going to let Ron’s absurd jealousy stop a blooming friendship with a lot of possibilities. She wanted Draco to stay on their side, the good side. She wanted him to have a better life than the one he was being given; she cared for him. Ron’s childlike jealousy wasn’t going to stop that.

I walked towards the prefects’ compartment looking at Hermione worriedly; something had definitely been bothering her. If it was Ron again, I don’t know if I could help but yell at him for it. After all, Hermione had become a good friend of mine. Ron had been being totally unfair to her these past few days before they returned to Hogwarts. It was really quite ridiculous; obviously some people can never change.

We entered the prefects’ compartment and smiled. I noticed that Ron wasn’t there, further confirming that Ron and Hermione had been in a fight. I didn’t mention this to Hermione; I wanted her to be able to lead a good meeting.

“Hello,” Hermione said sweetly, smiling at everyone. “Congratulations on being made a prefect, and for those of you who were a prefect previously, congratulations on being asked back.” I nodded at them, making sure to glare at Hermione as though I hated her. We had agreed that, although we could be good friends in our Common Room, we had to be sure to make everyone think we still hated each other. If my father found out where I had been the past month, I wouldn’t be the only one in danger. All the Weasleys, Harry and Hermione would be, and, as much as I couldn’t believe it, I owed it to them to keep them safe.

“Well,” I began in my usual drawling voice, “There are several responsibilities as prefects, both good and bad. You have to take shifts patrolling the corridors, though the Head Boy and Girl,” I nodded gruffly to Hermione, “Do the majority of this. You do, however, have to give out detentions, even if it is to your best friends. There are perks to the job too, of course. Another definite responsibility is that, at any given time of chaos at the school, you must be prepared to lead your house wherever teachers or Professor Dumbledore instructs. Any questions?”

Everyone stood looking at me and Hermione, apparently having no questions to ask us. We continued the meeting, and after what felt like a very successful meeting, it was only me and Hermione left in the compartment. All the prefects had filed out after we had given them permission. I sat down and sighed.

“Now, what happened between you and Ron?” I asked, smirking.
