SHIP: DRACO/HERMIONE



Prologue

The mist was thick. The wizards normally long, blond, and perfectly straight hair was a mess as his face laid in the mud. His hands were tied with an invisible rope behind his back with his wand laid broken in front of him. Lucius Malfoy didn't struggle. He had a wand pointed at his stiff body as the body bind curse held him by a large man with ministry official robes on. Draco was held back by the point of a smaller auror's wand. He could hear his mother crying as they took her wand and restrained her as well as his father, who Draco couldn't seem to take his eyes off of.
"You're lucky that you proved yourself a friend during the war, boy." spat the larger Auror as he gripped onto his own wand as well as Narcissa's. Draco didn't say anything, but just sneered at the man. He was no friend. Not to anyone who would haul his parents to Azkaban. He was shaking with anger as his mothers cries got louder and his fathers body was lifted to a standing position- the mud thick on the side of his face.
Draco tried to yell for his mom, to beg for them to reconsider but nothing would escape his lips. His screams couldn't be heard and his body just wouldn't stop shaking. The mist got thicker as it turned to heavy fog that made him sweat uncontrollable. He tried to yell again, but nothing. He tried to run, but he couldn't move. He was frozen apart from the shakes that trembled his body from head to toe.
"Master?"
The scene began to fade.
"Master, Mistel wishes to wake you!"
Everything was turned black around him.
"Mistel doesn't want to disturb you but-"
Loud screams started to hurt his eardrums, hurt his throat.
"Master Malfoy- please waken!"
Oh... the screams were his.
Draco's eyes shot open as his hands went straight for the house elf's throat. He looked directly into the struggling elf's large eyes, but somehow he couldn't recognize him. Everything around him seemed foreign, even the hands that gripped the elf's neck.
"Master... please..." he choked.
The he snapped out of it.
His breathing was heavy, his body was shaking, and he was drenched in sweat. His hands were limp as they retracted from Mistel's neck and trembled in his lap.
And sadly enough... as he sat up in his bed, all he could think about was how bad he wanted his mother.
Childish rubbish.


CHAPTER ONE- A new job! (Hermione's POV)

A/N:
So if you're at all confused- that was a dream. Well... a dream of a memory. It was be later explained, but basically here is the premise of the story;

This is post war. About two or so years after the vanquishing of Voldemort. The followers of Voldemort have been hunted down and sent to Azkaban, unless proven that they are truly changed. Draco's parents were arrested and so were most of his friends, so he's pretty much alone. Except for his house elf, Mistel!
Hermione & friends are on the happier side of it all. They're starting their lives and getting jobs and just enjoying things now that everything's back to how it should be.

CHAPTER ONE- A new job!


Hermione excelled in pretty much everything. Everyone knew that. So when it came time for her to snap out of all the crazy post war excitement, she was on top of it. Anyone who knows Hermione, knows that she has a passion for helping people. Well, more like helping 'living things'. She established S.P.E.W. back in her Hogwarts days and intended to keep the project full-fledged and running. So that's what she did.
After going back to Hogwarts for the year that she missed, she graduated with Ginny and with her help established the official S.P.E.W. organization inside of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. After that was done, she moved on to her real dream;
To be a healer at St. Mungo's
...Her first day, not so good.
"Granger, second floor."
"Granger, fifth floor."
"Granger, clean this up."
"Granger, Emergency!"
It never stopped. She was only a trainee and she was being pulled from left and right, up and down, to do EVERYTHING it seemed. Of course- this was only half the load of what her trainer, Healer-in-charge Aldon, did on a daily basis... which was crazy. Aldon, however, seemed to think that just because she was a major part of the vanquishing of Voldemort- that she knew whatever there was to know about Healing. Hence, the heavy workload.
"Granger, lets go, second floor. We have a new patient." said Aldon. Hermione snapped out of her trance and followed Aldon into the elevator, leaning tiredly against the back wall. She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the exhaustion from the day beginning to sink in. "Okay- so, our patient is a white wizard. Age, 21. His symptoms are constant shaking, fevers, livid nightmares, and possible psychological damage. The healers have been trying to stop the shaking, but no known spell has taken care of him. Their moving onto potions to stop the fevers, but the first few droughts have been ineffective."
Hermione nodded, rubbing her eyes as she stood up straight, walking out of the elevator as it 'binged' and opened. She followed behind the quick steps of Aldon through the solemn yet busy hallways. Once they reached the room, Hermione stopped dead in the doorway- her eyes wide.
"S-Sir... what did you say the patients name was?"
"Malfoy. Draco Malfoy. Now get over here and help before he gets worst!" he said urgently, but Hermione was stuck.
"Oh dear..."

Here's part two of chapter one;


Part II - Chapter I


His face was a deep shade of red as it shimmered with the bears of sweat that trickled down the sides of his face. The assistant healers surrounded him with their wands pointed at him, spells shooting at Malfoy as they tried to stop him from the violent shaking that emitted from his body, but they seemed to be failing miserably. Hermione could hear Aldon as he yelled at her to start helping, but she was frozen. This was... Malfoy. Right in front of her! She hasn't seen him since the night that the war ended three years ago. Apart from the sweat, shakes, and sickened look- his hair was shorter and not slicked back and he seemed bigger, more grown up if anything.
"Granger! Get your head out of the cauldron smoke and pull out your wand!"
Hermione let out a short gasp, snapping out of the trance that she didn't even realize that she was in. She immediately pulled out her wand, her hand shaking slightly as she moved to Malfoy's bedside. She pointed her want towards his wrist as she commanded a spell.
It... Didn’t work.
Hermione’s eyebrows pulled together as she spoke another spell, then another, then one more. Then the panic set in.
What was this?
Aldon was now at Malfoy's other side, the two assistants pulled back as they rushed to make more draughts to give him. He started to talk to him, yelling at him to respond but all that came from Malfoy was unheard mumbles of rubbish. He looked up at Hermione, seeing that none of her spells were working and pulled out his own wand.
“I’ll try the spells. You talk to him. Just get him to stop shaking!” he said in hurried tones. Hermione looked at Malfoy, her eyes searching him as she began to try and talk to him, feeling so… awkward.
“Malfoy- you have to stop shaking…” she said, her voice a little weak. She took a breath and saw Aldon give her a look from the corner of her eyes. She bit her lip and acted upon instinct. She grabbed his boiling hand with her cold ones, holding it firmly between his palms. “Draco- Draco, you have to look at me.” She said, keep her voice calm but firm. “Draco, calm down- You have to calm down!”
His shaking began to subside, slowing down before it just soothed and stopped. Aldon looked over to her in amazement, “What’d you do?!” he asked- dropping his wand into his pocket.
“I… I don’t know, I just… spoke to him.”
Aldon just looked at her for a moment before letting out a breath and shaking his head and grabbing Malfoy’s chart. He looked it over once more before going to Malfoy and checking his eyes and pulse.
“Okay… he’s just unconscious. Granger- stay with him until he wakes up. Notify me if he dies or anything.” He said almost as nonchalantly as if he were telling her the whether forecast.
“What?!”
“Do you have a problem with that?” he asked, rounding over to her with his eyebrows raised.
“No… I… Sorry sir, no I don’t.”
”Right… well, I’ll send a healer over to check on you two if I don’t hear anything in an hour or so.”
Hermione nodded, her eyes going back to Malfoy. She focused on him for a moment as she felt something that she never had before for the guy- pity. He seemed so helpless, so sad. Even with his eyes closed, with the way that his mouth curved and his eyebrows rose… he just seemed so… upset. Hermione jumped back, realizing that he hands were still holding onto his. She pulled them out and wiped off his sweat onto her white healers robes and let out a breath. That was weird.
She looked back to the unconscious Malfoy and pushed her lips to the side in thought- where has he been all these years?

Chapter 2 - Waking Up

The same dream AGAIN.
The immobile feeling struck him, the muted yells that never left him, everything seemed to be the same.
But instead of the scene fading- he seemed to be yanked out by a delicate hand of light peach skin that help onto his like it were leading him out of Knockturn Alley and into the safe and bright streets of Diagon Alley . It was… weird nonetheless.
Once he was out- it was peaceful, but something still seemed off.
Draco’s eyes slowly opened and instantly squinted as his pupils tried to adjust to the insanely white room around him. It was quiet but tense. Lonely yet crowded.
”You’re awake.” Said a voice from his side. Draco arched his neck, finding it difficult to find the owner of the shocked whisper. “Malfoy… can you hear me?” The voice said again, “Malfoy?”
…Malfoy? He hasn’t been addressed by his last name since Hogwarts, especially with such underlying contempt.
”Malfoy- look at me.” He tried to look again- his eyes trying to shut themselves once more, but once they laid on the girl (Well, woman) next to him- they shot open.
“Granger?”
For a moment, a small smile could almost be seen tweak at the corners of her lips- but it was out of sight once her eyes darted downward into her clipboard where she started to mumble all sorts of things. “Hearing, check. Speech, check. Vision, check. Memory, check.”
”Where am I?” Draco demanded- though his voice, he could hear, was very weak. “What are you doing here?”
Hermione ignored the obvious dislike of her presence and kept her eyes down at her charts. “St. Mungo’s” she said shortly, standing up from her seat, “You’re… sick, I guess.”
“You guess?” he hissed, trying to sit up in his bed but letting out a grunt when he discovered it to be way harder then expected. Did she say sick? How? Last thing he remembered he was in bed reading the Daily Prophet and then…a blank. What happened? “And what’re you doing here?” he demanded again, “Where are the healers? Why would they leave me with you of all people?”
“I am a healer-“
”What did you do to me? Is this some overdue punishment or something?”
“Malfoy- SHUT UP!” He shut up. His eyes locking with Hermione’s, which were intense as she glared into the eyes of her old rival. “You just got sent in here and hour ago. You were having a seizure and no magic could stop you for some unknown reason.” She started to explain, her voice still showing clear signs of annoyance towards Draco. She almost had to strain to keep it together with him around. After all, he was just a patient. Nothing special. Her job was much more important. “I’m your healer, got it?”
“No, Granger, I don’t ‘got it’. How are you my healer?! You’re hardly out of Hogwarts and you’re hardly the witch for it.”
“Excuse me?! I went back and finished Hogwarts at the top of the class, at the top of the last six years of classes actually. I’m perfectly capable-“
“- JUST because you schmoozed a few professors and killed off the Dark Lord. It doesn’t mean a thing. I want a REAL Healer, a pureblood with actual skill.”
Her eyebrows pulled together, making it clear that that had bothered Hermione, but Draco could hardly care less. He felt weak, powerless, and he couldn’t feel his wand. Though it may be strange- whenever he wasn’t near it… he could feel it. His heart was racing and his mind was full of confusion and anger at this powerless feeling that he had. He was just ripped out of the everyday element that he’s been so used to and now… he was just laying here- probably looking like a mess, in front of Hermione Granger. Of ALL people.
After a few moments of silence, Granger finally turned from her spot and began to walk away- huffing as she exited.
