Just remember to be creative and detailed in your RP's. People are more likely to want to RP with you if you post more than one sentence. It's important to also remember to develope you charrie. Give them some personality!

And I'm almost always available to RP if anyone needs an RP buddy

Yes, it isn't a concern. As Krazypenguin said, try to be creative and make your carrie interesting. I dont mean making them a metamorphose etc, but try to write in detail, and people will notice you And as always, if you are still uncomfortable about not having a friend, just drop me a PM I'll be more than happy to RP with you!

So I've recently come across this issue through the RP.
I even looked over the Thread and saw these two brought up a few times, but not in the way I'm about to explain.
  • Always Ask to RP, we WANT to RP with you!
  • Research the Previous Posts in the Thread before you make yours (Stalk them)
I think this is great advice, but my thoughts for any newcomer is to combine these two pieces of advice. If you see something fun happening in the School RP and want to join in, DON'T just do so. It might have been just between the two (or group), or it could be wrapping up. Posting without warning could throw everyone off.

I always make an Effort to Ask (be it from PMs, VMs, an Online Messanger, or Twitter) if I can jump into an RP that's been ongoing, and after I've stalked the thread that it's been happening on. So I know what I'm getting myself, and my character into.

I just find that to be proper RP etiquette in my standards.

I feel like this could go for the chat threads too. Recently, I've noticed that sometimes someone will post something like 'Hey, anyone up for an RP?' and then the very next post will be pretty much the the same question. Now, I know that it's possible to be typing at the same time that someone else is posting, it happens to me sometimes. But, the 'preview post' button is great for this, since it also refreshes the page and you can scroll down and see if anyone posted while you were typing

I've always wondered what everyone's take was on tenses within the RP. When posting, for me, I feel like the body of the post itself should always be past tense, but dialogue is present. Is this the rule of thumb for everyone? If so, why is that? It just doesn't read right, for me, if post body is in present tense. But I am weird so that could be it.

Author's choice! All but one series I've read have been this way as well (present speech, past action). I forget what I read that was full present... it threw me off, but I accepted it and moved on. Since it was consistent it was okay, but I think we're all generally on the same page here. It's when it's all flowing and one person changes tenses, that grinds my gears

My opinion anyway!

Firstly, can I just say I'm amused at the revival of this thread and I kind of love that its been around for so long

But I just wanted to respond to THIS whole thing because I work in a bookstore and have since................ I guess 2007? Yeah. ANYWAY in that time, the full present thing has become a 'new fad' of sorts in YA fiction (Hunger Games, Divergent etc). Which naturally means that generationally speaking, we might start finding that RPers are switching to that style simply because that's the kind of thing they are used to as consumers of modern (especially YA as I said) fiction these days. I haven't sat down and taken note of it statistically on our site, but I think it IS worth mentioning.

This is the same kind of change that you can see when you read old classics like Austen and compare what that is like to something like Lord of the Rings, and then Harry Potter... its all about writing trends and all of that sort of thing. If people RP'd back then they probably would write in a different style to what we do (and actually I was part of a different fandom that was written differently, and people DID tend to write in THAT way, while I brought my style along with me based on the literature that I consume).

My PERSONAL take is third person limited past tense in the body, and first person limited in the dialogue like Erin said in that older post, and also generally to RP in the style in which that book/world has been written. So if I was RPing in a Hunger Games RP for instance, I would be more inclined to try and imitate that style in my RPing.

However, in saying that, I've RPd with some brilliant RPers over the years who RP in present tense, and they manage to do it seamlessly opposite past-tensers like myself, and to me that is what it comes down to - it feeling natural, and still being able to respond to each other, and interact in a way that is conducive to the interaction element of the RPG.

The only thing I personally find jarring is when an RPer repeats what my character is doing in that .... because I do third person past, it seems for a second like they're RPing what my character is doing, rather than just reiterating it (and I'd rather read what their charrie thinks/processes about my charries actions, rather than repeating it) So if my charrie is called John, I find it weird to see someone else whose charrie is... say, Stacey, starting their post like:

Quote:
John was eating his sausages, and he asked Stacey a question.
And my brain is like WAAAIT YOU CANT RP MY JOHN!! I'd rather see it being like:

Quote:
Stacey watched John eating his sausages and considered the question he asked her.
or what have you. I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me, but it messes with point of view a bit, so I think its something worth taking into account and being careful with as it CAN be interpreted as godmodding (even though it isn't) and is something an editor would probably pick up in a book, for pov consistency reasons.
